overview

Elisheva Podhajce━ or just Eli, voted best smile. one of bayshore's brightest, the eighteen year old is rarely seen without his signature grin. golden boy emblazoned, a shooting star destined to burn and fizzle out. bless his heart, he's trying.

faceclaim

Eli has a frame often underestimated for being captain of the basketball team, standing no taller than 5'11”, with wiry shoulders, and clothes that always sit a little looser against his willowy frame. He has short fluffy blonde hair that often looks unintentionally like bed head, bangs uncombed and choppy. Bony shoulders, with skin that’s either silver pale with freckles or rubbed raw. His face is square and lean, with delicate boyish features and covered with light freckles over his nose to his lips. He often has bags under his eyes and looks a little withered. His eyes are a remarkable blend of green, hazel and dark blue, and seem to shift in shade depending on the light.

notes

psyche

Athletic.

Overwhelmed.

Charismatic.

Self-blaming.

Quick witted.

Emotional.

Overprotective.

Elisheva Podhajce has changed multiple times over the years, or as his family puts it, he has developed into the man [boy] that he is today. In a drastic change from how he was when he was younger, Eli has become more carefree, effortless and as some would describe, happy. At least, that's the image he puts out. Eli wasn't always open and accepting. In his childhood, he was angry and haunting, scared of criticism and easy to make cry. His disability made him an instant target for bullying, infantilism and ridicule at such a young age that it made him into a shell of his former self. To toughen himself up and prove that he was worthy, Eli raised his guard and his fists against anyone who opposed him.

Eli is a sensitive little boy on the inside, but instead of breaking noses, he's learned to let the insults, snide remarks and dirty looks roll off his mind and chest to be forgotten. He's only got so much time in his life and he can't spend it hung on people's opinions. A true free spirit, he loves a good conversation and talking to people, always open to anything someone wants to say to him or if they simply need a distraction. He's energetic as well, and puts it to good use, helping around the school and keeping an optimistic outlook.

But even with his carefree and genuine attitudes, there's some downside that can't be ignored. Eli hates letting people down or hurting them, and if it's someone he truly loves? He might let them step on him [and this why he's seen as a people pleaser by some]. Always on his feet and in his own little world, he has a hard time concentrating [his father called him a space cadet for that reason] and sometimes has to be called on for his attention back at hand. His sensitivity makes him take insults straight to the chest, and with enough buttons pushed, past transgressions will show themselves and he'll snap at you with everything he's got, no matter if it hurts people or not, he just needs to make a point.

likes
night time, oranges and clementines, rainy days with lots of fog, stray animals, the color green, listening to vinyl records, dancing, mystery books where the killer is always the butler, annoying his little brothers, being around other people (mainly friends), fries with ketchup

dislikes
people who chew loudly and don’t even realize it, people who spit while talking, or make loud slurping noises, doing nothing and sitting still, reading a book or even opening one, arguing with people unnecessarily, talking about his mom, when someone tells him to "just listen"

fears

⋆ having no purpose/being forgotten. eli has, and always will strive to be useful. even if he's an overachiever, at least he's achieving something. at least he's proving people wrong. so the thought of him having no purpose, being useless or being perceived as such is terrifying. scarier than any nightmare he could conjure.
⋆ isolation. eli gets his energy from talking to people, being in crowds or simply interacting with others. being in a blank, enclosed space or simply being stuck alone is not something he enjoys or likes, so he avoids it as much as possible.

background

Eli was born in a small town near Lviv, Ukraine, which is on the Polish-Ukrainian border and as such as quite a fluid Polish/Ukrainian identity and culture. He speaks both languages fluently, and his English is getting more fluent although he carries a strong East Polish/West Ukrainian accent. He lived most of his life there. He grew up Jewish, speaking Yiddish regularly at their home in California.

For much of his life, Eli was a normal child, albeit a bit behind compared to other kids, juggling learning English and fitting in at school. To the rest of the world, Eli was destined to make it far in life.

Yeah, right.

The hearing loss that changed Eli's life was slow, and painless. But unavoidable. He was a young boy when it happened, not even out of middle school when his parents noticed the symptoms. When spoken to, he couldn't pay attention unless tapped on his shoulder, he had to constantly ask others to repeat themselves to get a grasp on their sentences and when he sometimes couldn't even hear people call his name unless they were up close, his parents decided that enough was enough and went to see medical professionals.

Hard of Hearing. His father had taken the news in moderate fashion. It didn't change his view of his son, or the way he'd take care of him, he simply needed to be more mindful. But his mother? To his mother, it felt like a crisis, like death. Her boy would never be a musician, never be a doctor, never do the things she wanted [needed] him to do. And with that, she began to resent him. And his disability made his life tilt on its side. When his classmates became aware of his hearing aids and difficulty listening, he was a target for their insecurities and aggression. He was pushed, degraded and treated like an infant by teachers and adults alike. And that in of itself made him cold and mean.

His mother was no better, isolating him from his brothers to punish him whenever he dropped a glass, accidentally ignored her or made a simple mistake. And if it wasn't isolation, he was their second parent. Cleaning their messes, feeding them when she forgot and taking care of them like they were his (they are now) and not his mother's. Deaf and Dumb. That's what he was to her now. Not her son, not her baby, just deaf, dumb and useless. When she eventually left his father for another man, he wished he could say he missed her but he didn't. Her being gone was the best gift Eli could wish for. Unfortunately, his father couldn't say the same. But even with his mother out of the frame, his father found the ability to keep his heart open, if not his wife, for his kids. Eli eventually became a better man, a better person. All because of his father.

ADDITIONAL INFO

— eli does a lot of odd jobs, including working at a garage, a diner, babysitting for kids in the rich neighborhood, writing essays for kids who don’t want to, singing choir at the church. anything really that he can get his hands on. sometimes he also does delivery for fast food on the days he can pawn a car from his friends or his dad.

— will not hesitate to turn off his hearing aids mid-argument. it's a power move.

— tri-lingual and fluent in sign language, has no qualms using signing but prefers his cochlears because it feels a little embarrassing correcting people's signs constantly.

— cripplingly bisexual and can't for the life of him flirt with girls or boys.

— guilty pleasure music is nsync and tlc.

— theme song is third eye by florence + the machine.

with a surprisingly soft voice and gentle way of speaking, nobody would expect joy to be such a popular student, let alone one that gets into heated arguments in classes over the misogyny that happens within media and literature. she carries herself with a sense of confidence and pride, clearly at home within her social status at the school and within the community. while she is an 'it girl' if you will, she does her best not to conduct herself that way. instead, she tries to help people when she can and speak out against things that she is uncomfortable with. That being said, it's not like she's all sunshine and goodness.

known to have a jealous streak, joy finds it difficult to push aside these feelings when someone is approaching her current s/o or even stealing her look at school. they are things that boil inside of her and can lead to snide remarks or confrontation, both things she isn't afraid to do when push comes to shove. unbearably stubborn at times, she doesn't like doing what she's told if she feels like she knows what's best. she is known to dig her heels in and not budge as admitting she's wrong isn't really something she can do easily. This seems to have resulted in her sort of blocking people out and keeping them from diving deep within her heart, causing nobody to really know who she is.

still, even with those 'vices', she is a very kind person and tends to empathize with people that confide in her. she does her best to give 100% to everything she is doing and will support her peers as much as possible. there is almost always a smile on her face or a kind expression, usually caused by her helping someone or simply engaging in an interesting conversation. she likes to socialize and will sometimes go out of her way to talk to newer students in order to get to know them and make them feel more comfortable at the school. what can she say, she's a people person.

background

childhood

born to Cynthia and Alex Thatcher, she was the youngest of four. Such a precious baby, considering she was the only girl and was considered a miracle baby. Oh yes, she was one of those babies, the ones that you would never forget were a complete miracle. granted, it probably wouldn't have been repeated so often while she was growing up if her father wasn't a politician and her mom wasn't a cancer survivor, but there was nothing to be done. she was their precious miracle and she was at the forefront of the Thatcher campaign from infancy.

growing up she had it easy, her brothers were old enough to not bully her so she had a quiet time and got all the attention of her parents whenever she cried or asked for it. quite spoiled, she was definitely raised with a silver spoon but her parents refused to let her act spoiled in public. explaining a public image to a toddler didn't ever go over well so it was quite the challenge for her parents as they did their best to make their youngest a 'perfect little girl' one that was meant to be the son of the mayor or even governor. of course, none of this mattered to joy as she was more content with playing Barbies in the pool.

her memories mostly consisted of spending hours at speeches and debates, holding onto her mother's leg while trying not to fall asleep. she saw her dad but he was never in dad mode when she was with him, making it a bit difficult to form a relationship with him as he wasn't the easiest for her to approach. so she bonded with her mom and older brothers as they often would take her to the beach or on little road trips, wanting her to experience more than a politician's idea of a good time.

present day

since entering high school, a lot has changed for joy. well, maybe not a lot, but enough for her to be entirely different. her father had gotten elected mayor in her freshman year and she made it her duty to be the picture-perfect daughter for him. she started doing community service during her free time, joined various extracurriculars, and supported her father at every opportunity. as it is only her living at home with her parents, their expectations and eyes seemed to settle on her shoulders for the foreseeable future so she didn't see any reason to not rise and meet their standards.

she worked hard to improve her grades, make herself desirable at school, and be the perfect person. while on the outside it has had amazing results, it has taken its toll on her mentally. often times when she isn't socializing at a party or shopping at the mall with friends, she's wrapped up in two blankets and watching her favorite movies quietly. as college applications began to get closer, she felt the noose that was her tie tighten around her throat, forcing her to pick the perfect school that the most popular student would attend. so she sent out a lot of applications in her junior year and heard back from them, but if she was being honest, her father is the one that picked out which she will be attending. unsure of her life, her senior year has been rather tumultuous as she does her best to figure out how she wants to live her life and if she wants to live for herself or for everyone else.

ADDITIONAL INFO

— she has a mild cat allergy

— gummy candies gross her out and she cannot eat them

— fall is her favorite season

— she makes her own coffee and will make some for her friends too in the mornings

— she often lowers her voice when presenting so she sounds 'clearer'

— reads a lot of feminist literature in her free time

— she cannot stand cheaters

— really doesn't like gym class but goes for the grade

— doesn't date very often because she likes serious relationships

— used to go riding with matilda but not anymore

— has three dogs named matilda, violet, and junie

— her parents started calling her joy when she hit two and now everybody calls her it. she would be surprised if someone called her irene

For such a quiet person, it's rather surprising how confident Naomi is. It's not that she is shy, but she just prefers to observe before deciding if she wants to participate. Don't mistake her silence for an attitude, she can be quite friendly when approached. She is secure in who she is and proud of her talents. She doesn't mind doing things on her own and would prefer to get on with things without any fuss or hand-holding. However, being quiet does not mean she doesn't care. In fact, she cares quite a bit. Naomi takes pride in her skills and is certainly competitive. She wants to be the best, whether it's in her art or in a board game. Her attention to detail can result in her becoming fussy about certain things, whether it is how her hair is styled to the food on her plate.

background

Pre-Bayshore

Naomi Saito was the only child of Hiroto Saito and Nina Meier. The pair met in college at UCLA and married four years after graduating, settling in Silver Lake, Los Angeles. By all accounts, Naomi had a happy childhood. Always creative, her parents indulged in her interests. They proudly displayed her artwork in the house, let her experiment with her clothing and makeup, and developed roll after roll of film from her camera.

Despite being an only child, she was never lonely. Though it was small, and a few came and went, she had a solid group of friends she carried with her through high school. Middle school was tumultuous with her friends, as it is for everyone that age but they managed to get through that relatively fine. With both her parents working, Naomi was often left to her own devices after school once she was old enough to not have a babysitter.

Academically, she was always rather average. She didn't care much for traditional subjects (chemistry can go die), but she naturally excelled in her art classes. She liked her school about as much as any other kid her age, which wasn't all that much, but she didn't want to go anywhere else.

It was all fine until her life completely blew up. Apparently, her mom was having affairs while off on her business trip and the discovery of these affairs lead to a very swift and very final divorce. And just when Naomi was starting to get used to having divorced parents, her dad moved on and married a new woman. Erica Clarke. She was fine enough and Naomi wouldn't have a problem with it if she didn't live three hours away. She begged to stay with her mother in her childhood home so she could finish out high school with her friends, but because she was away on business trips so often, it was decided that she'd move with Hiroto to Bayshore.

Post-Bayshore

Naomi started at Bayshore at the end of her Junior year. It was late enough in the year that she didn't have time to make many meaningful relationships before school let out for the summer. Sure, she had Elliot, her new stepbrother, but he got on her nerves quite a bit. It wasn't that he was awful to her or anything, in fact, she couldn't even give a reason as to why he bothered her so much.

After shuttling back and forth between LA and Bayshore, she now has to face her senior year. And if she is being honest, she doesn't have high hopes.

ADDITIONAL INFO

—She alters her clothes/accessories to fit whatever vision she has

—Interested in all different mediums of art. Including, but not limited to photography, drawing, and painting. She often mixes mediums.

—Has resting bitch face, sorry

—Fluent in Japanese since her father is from Japan

—Allergic to bees

—Currently mad at both of her parents, so she has the tiniest chip on her shoulder

—Collects vintage postcards

a playful wink and soft kiss on the cheek is often the signature greeting one gets from matilda. she is a breath of fresh air, with hints of coconut and cigarettes she will steal your heart within a few moments before leaving you behind, wondering what even happened. while she seems rather unassuming when you first see her, she is someone with a goal to catch as many hearts as she can before she graduates. she isn't a social butterfly but she also isn't antisocial, often preferring the company of others to her quiet apartment she calls home. she has a few friends, but nothing that she considers to last behind the walls of high school as that seems to be as magical as a unicorn. no, she's a realist and just so happens to like catching a kiss from her fellow students here and there.

while not the most academically inclined, she makes up for it with her social presence. always the first to receive an invite to a party, she is an anticipated guest that many students wait for with bated breath. she makes her own rules and definitely lives by them, not one to really listen to authority figures as they clearly don't know what they're doing considering they are still stuck in high school. she has a bit of a temper, one that comes out when she gets pushed over the edge, especially when alcohol is involved. this can lead to loud arguments and harsh words being exchanged, her surprisingly meaning each one. she likes competition, but potentially at an unhealthy level as she feels like pretty much everything is a competition and if she doesn't win it, what's the point?

even though her friendships may be far and few between, she is someone who really treasures her friendships, regardless of how long they last. she loves having people to rely on and go on crazy adventures with. quiet fun to be with, she will make sure everyone is laughing before the night is over. she does her best to be there for them when they need her and that makes her someone that a lot of people want in their corner. she is also an incredibly passionate person and will pursue her dreams without hesitation, even if they seem out of reach. she will do whatever it takes to reach her own personal goals and doesn't let anything weigh her down as that would prove that other people were right, and frankly, she wouldn't be able to stomach that.

reputation
while teachers don't like matilda very much due to her poor grades, she generally has a positive reputation among the students. granted this is mainly because she is somewhat of a flirt and likes to 'teach' people how to kiss properly, but she isn't going to complain. she isn't an easy score for people outside of kissing which makes her a prize to be won if you will, but while some people like the chase, she is obsessed with the challenge. this can lead to tension with other students as she will compete over practically anything if she believes she actually has competition.

background

childhood

she was a child that shouldn't have been born, or at least that's how she has been viewed since she was delivered that cold February night. her mother, sophie hart, worked for Michael Biggs and while he was married and had his own children, they couldn't stop their work affair. they took every precaution but still ended up with matilda, despite Michael asking sophie to end it before it got any worse. she didn't and somehow the two of them ended up in an apartment that Michael paid for. their life wasn't lavish in the slightest as sophie worked two jobs, knowing that she would lose her position in michael's company when his wife inevitably found out, she didn't want to be out of a job and have to struggle to get one. so the pair of them lived a quiet life, with her father occasionally seeing her when he was on 'business trips' and matilda's relatively obscure life began to form.

she didn't know that her family was abnormal until she reached the third grade and saw how multiple children had parents that were always together for school events and seemed to be happily married. this was when she started to question her mother about her dad and why he didn't live with them or really hang out with her. this caused her relationships with both of her parents to twist under the lies and pressures of their young daughter. but she didn't understand it and their answers didn't satisfy her anymore. matilda often acted out because of this and combined with her undiagnosed learning disabilities, she fell behind in school and struggled to get into the next year. she felt hopeless, even in elementary school, like something wasn't right when it should be.

but even though she was frustrated and confused, she didn't want everything to crumble around her, but that's exactly what it did. michael's wife found out about the affair and she arrived at their doorstep. to her surprise and horror, matilda was the one who answered the door as her mother was at work and wasn't going to be home for hours. the woman was angry and distraught when she saw matilda, seeing the resemblance of her husband in the young girl's face. she barely remembers what happened after the woman grabbed her wrist and a phone, but somehow matilda ended up in the hospital with her dad crying in the hallway, clearly upset by something, she didn't find out what happened until after she was discharged and frankly, she couldn't understand it. matilda apparently had been taken by michael's wife who got into a car accident, resulting in them both being in the hospital, the wife later passed away due to her injuries.

present day

high school was a new start for matilda, at least that's what she planned on. since the death of her father's wife, her relationship with both her parents became strained. this was mainly because she blamed herself for everyone's lives imploding and eventually convinced her mom and dad to let her get her own apartment while she finished school. surprisingly, her parents continued their relationship but never made it public as he knew his other children would never approve of it while they lived under his roof. still, matilda didn't feel like she belonged with any of them. she felt like a mistake, like something her mother had been stuck with and something that her father despised. so she left. she decided to be alone and to minimize the damage she inflicted on people she cared about. but high school, well, it wasn't something she could go through unnoticed.

due to her loneliness and unhealthy views on relationships, she often got into situation-ships with her fellow classmates regardless of their relationship status. she liked feeling desired and how it chased away the coldness of her empty home, at least for a few hours. but it came with a cost, one that she actively fought against. between angry girlfriends or exes, matilda often found herself getting confronted after parties for making out with someone she wasn't allowed to, but she didn't understand why. nobody told her why she couldn't do those things, just that she wasn't allowed to. who were they to order her around? fighting against the tides, she continued to make her way through high school, barely able to skate by with her grades, teachers often turning a blind eye to her struggles. now in her senior year and having no idea where she's going upon graduation, matilda simply wants to end her high school career with a bang (or two if she's lucky enough).

ADDITIONAL INFO

    background

    Growing Up…

Ronan Josiah O’Reilly was born to Rosalia and Cian O’Reilly. His mother and father got a divorce when he was 7 years old and his mother got custody of him. His father was the definition of an asshole. When his mother found out she was pregnant with Ronan, his father decided to abuse her and cheat on her. He denied Ronan as his child until a court-ordered paternity test proved that Ronan was his son.

Ronan’s father is a very wealthy man, and as such when Ronan’s DNA matched his father’s, it solidified his inheritance as Ronan is his only child.

During the abuse, his mother finally got the strength to leave, and after a lengthy court battle, Rosalia won custody. His father was ordered to pay child support every month. His mother always wanted what was best for Ronan, and thus deposited the money into an account for Ronan in his name, but he can only access it when he turns 21. Ronan’s grandparents on his father’s side continue to shower him with love and do anything they can for him.

    Life at Bayshore High

When Ronan entered high school, he met a senior name, Dominic. Ronan was 15 years old and a freshman at the time and fell head over heels for him. Everything was great until Dominic started mentally abusing him. He would treat him differently in front of others and do things that caused Ronan to question himself. Ronan would always apologize after being gaslit into thinking everything was his fault. After Dominic graduated, the physical abuse began. Ronan would come to school with bruised ribs or a busted lip. Eventually, it became too much, and during Ronan’s junior year, he broke up with Dominic. He vowed never to feel powerless and started fighting back. Dominic didn’t take no for an answer. They ended up in a physical altercation and Dominic ended up in the hospital.

Ronan was ready to face the consequences, but Dominic admitted to everything and Ronan was allowed to return to school. Because of his past experience, Ronan tends to not hold back if someone strikes a nerve. He doesn’t date because he has a fear that it will happen again. He's afraid that if he lets his guard down and dates again, the cycle of abuse will start over again. To prevent this, he never lets anything go beyond physical intimacy. He is very transparent when it comes to hookups, ensuring that the other knows he is not in it for a relationship. It’s now his senior year in high school and he’s ready to graduate. He’s built a reputation for fighting bullies and being distant. He’s had a few people try to date him, but it doesn’t go anywhere.

    ADDITIONAL INFO

    — Ronan suffers from anxiety and depression, but he has a therapist he sees. He also has anger issues because of his father’s abandonment and his ex-boyfriend's abuse.

    — Despite being “the fighter”, Ronan has amazing grades and loves science.

    — He is very close to ELISHEVA PODHAJCE. One can say they are best friends. Ronan learned ASL because of Eli and is very protective of him. Where Eli might turn the other cheek, Ronan will definitely slap the cheek of the one who bothers Eli. He likes to make Eli laugh

—Ronan plays basketball and is on the swim team.

    — He knows how to fight, and it comes both naturally and with training. He is trained in kickboxing, most specifically muay thai.

    — Ronan loves to dance, and as such, helps with the choreography for school productions by the drama club. Because of this, he is friends with a few performers such as Avery Winchester and others.

    — Ronan is an amazing cook. He has taken Home Economics I, II, and III. Everyone loves it when he brings his own lunches to school. He often will make lunches for his friends since money is never an issue.

usually greeted with a harsh stare and frown, kazuki isn't someone that is easy to approach, especially clad in his dark clothes and blood-stained knuckles. he rarely shows a smile around his peers and generally seems to be in a bad mood, usually caught sleeping in class or going to detention for skipping. he doesn't talk a lot and does his best to avoid clingy or overly friendly people as they give him a headache. because of this, many students are afraid of him, usually whispering about things he has done and what he is going to do next. crowded hallways will thin out and make space for him. while he'd never say it, it does make him uncomfortable how scared or nervous people are around him, simply because he doesn't mean to come across as a 'bad boy' but he's too lazy to do anything about it.

even though he has a reputation for being a 'bad boy' he is someone that is incredibly honest about his feelings. he may be quiet, but he isn't shy about sharing how he feels about a situation and will voice any concerns he may have about someone. as he finds his relationships with people important, he tends to be rather protective and has gotten into conflicts due to standing up for people. while he will get embarrassed about it if someone points it out, but that doesn't stop him from being there for people. kazuki is rather observant as well, usually noticing the little things and will do those for people as their happiness will bring a rare smile to his face. he doesn't seem the type, but he is surprisingly artistic, specifically when it comes to photography, but he keeps this as hidden away as possible as he doesn't want to be teased.

reputation
not an honor-role student at all, kazuki is rather disliked by most of the teachers because of his dismissive and lazy attitude towards school. students are generally afraid of him because of the things he's done in the past, but some do approach him from time to time and find him to be interesting. in general, people try to stay on his good side and out of his way, especially at parties as he usually gets roped into fights.

background

childhood

born as the oldest son to a pair of second-generation immigrants, ami and kaito himura, he was raised in a strict environment with expectations placed on his shoulders as the oldest son. while not their first child, they wanted him to achieve great things and loved it when he reached his milestones early as a baby. while he and his siblings lived comfortably, they were not spoiled and were taught to be very true to their heritage, something that usually didn't go over well once they left their home. when he was in elementary school, kazuki often dealt with bullying or teasing that occurred due to his lunches or his name, but he reacted to it in a way that his parents didn't approve of but also didn't condemn. he often got into small altercations with those kids by stealing their things, hitting, or biting, but it was always smoothed over once his parents were called to the school. this is when he started to understand the lack of consequences for his actions due to his parents' jobs.

this caused him to have little respect for authority in his youth, especially when he got into arguments or fights, but it seemed that the attention he once received from his parents started to die off. this started around the time he was in fifth grade and his grades started to slip, making him fall behind and test poorly. his parents scolded him for his grades, but that was it. the attention and praise were long gone and instead shifted to another one of his siblings and soon kazuki faded into the background. this caused him to act out more deliberately so that his parents would show up and have to pay attention to him as they defended his actions and protected him from trouble. it was the beginning of his problematic behavior, but his parents didn't seem to notice. their disappointment seemed to override their ability to see the red flags that were raising around their oldest boy.

present day

between middle school and the beginning of high school, kazuki became a delinquent if you will, and started to do things like skip school, get into fights, graffiti, and simply fail tests or assignments. none of this acting out brought any additional attention to him, but at that point, he was over waiting for his parents (at least that's what he told himself). it was difficult for him to feel ignored and invisible, but he supplemented with alcohol, smoking, and dating. he found it easy to get along with those who were similar to him so he hung out with the 'wrong crowd' at the beginning of his high school career, not really caring about how it looked on paper or to others. he frequented parties, snuck out of his house, and ditched school whenever he felt hassled by teachers.

still, his parents bailed him out and protected him, keeping him from seeing the inside of a jail, simply limiting it to chilling in a squad car for an hour. it was frustrating to kazuki but as he aged, he found himself unable to be mad at them anymore. his self-loathing and irritation began to fester in junior year as he looked back on everything he did and realized he wasted a lot of time for no reason. generally having a hard time with academics, he found solace in photography and began to pursue that, though he kept it quiet secret as he dared not to even choose it as an elective. he felt embarrassed by his hobbies and interests so he kept them hidden away.

while he is currently unable to go to college due to his grades, kazuki is hoping he could potentially make a career out of his photography (using a pseudonym of course) and support himself that way. he's doing his best to attend school enough to graduate, but he can't make any promises.

an infectious smile and loud laugh, percy is someone that easily stands out in a crowd because of his outgoing and bright personality. he's never been one to be considered rude or disrespectful and instead seems to know exactly what to say and how to say it. he likes making people smile and laugh as it makes him feel good to see other people be happy. he has a good sense of humor, and while he can be occasionally a bit loud or clumsy, his good intentions and actions often make him relatively popular among his peers. he likes to think that he gets along with everyone, but sometimes he has a hard time meshing with people, often leading to him having some pretty upfront opinions.

pretty oblivious to things, percy usually can't tell when someone likes him or straight up hates him unless they say something of course. he has a bit of a habit of getting nervous about things, especially when it comes to landing roles he wants in plays (school or local), sometimes causing his nervous habits of picking at his nails until he hears the news. because of the expectations people have for him to perform well, he has developed into a kind of perfectionist in most aspects of life, not doing well when he does poorly. he has a hard time accepting it and will usually get upset and hide away for a while until he feels better. while this usually doesn't happen, when it does, he can be kind of unconsolable and will have a rather negative outlook on things.

popular for his roles in plays, both within the school and community, he is well-liked and makes friends easily. he enjoys spending time with his friends, though some tease him for his nerdish hobbies, he personally doesn't care about it. he has gotten into trouble with others before because of his obliviousness, but he has since gotten over it.

background

childhood

born to a loving couple, viola and hunter madden, percy was their world and they wanted nothing more than to treat him right. The pair had always been a couple of nerds, particularly with historical literature, leading to his unusual name, but that didn't stop them from all getting along and loving each other. growing up, percy enjoyed going with his parents to the library and various plays, learning about movies and characters that he started to dream about playing. he grew up with his best friend and neighbor elliot, and the two of them usually did things like play pretend star wars or act out their own movies. this helped interest percy in pursuing acting, his parents naturally enrolled him in the theater program alongside martial arts, and other clubs he was interested in.

this exposure helped pull percy out of his shell and he became rather confident and outgoing, something that his parents were extremely proud of. the family's refrigerator was soon covered in pictures and pamphlets of plays that percy was part of, regardless of how small a part he played. with the constant love and support of both his parents, it wasn't surprising that he turned out to be a very friendly and bright individual, gaining popularity when he entered middle school and started to get out of his awkward phase. but no matter the conflict or obstacle, he continued towards his dreams and did his best to improve his acting by going to camps and even private classes, determined to land leading roles in high school.

present day

high school started off somewhat rough, mostly due to percy spending the summer with his uncle, meaning they frequented rock and metal concerts, resulting in him dyeing his hair and getting many piercings. he had fun, but his parents were rather stressed out by their son's appearance. after freshman year though, he got bored and eventually went back to his usual look (though he sometimes wears his piercings). still, he was able to land some leading roles in school plays and he put his all into it, the response being rather positive. though he never had any use for popularity, he was happy that his fellow students liked his acting and enjoyed seeing him on stage.

when he was in his junior year, he received some offers from schools but also was accepted into other ones that he was over the moon about. The unfortunate thing was a lot of the schools he was interested in were scattered around the states, making it difficult for him to decide what to do. quite a sappy person, he never planned on leaving his family and friends behind after graduation, so now in his senior year, he has a bit of deciding to do before summer hits and it's off to college.

ADDITIONAL INFO

— he has had a shared star wars themed birthday every year with elliot since they became best friends

— he actively plays soccer, tennis, and basketball

— he does a triathlon each year

— he has been doing martial arts since he was 10

— took fencing and choreographed fighting for multiple years

— he went through a phase in his freshman year where he dyed his hair black and got a lot of piercings and tattoos (this was due to him spending the summer with his uncle)

— he is an insane driver and very rarely knows where he's going but hates Mapquest directions

— notorious for ruining pictures, people have to manage to get candid pictures so he doesn't ruin them

— surprisingly good cook

He’d do anything to help out his friends and is always there when they need him. However when it comes to schooling, he can be a bit careless. He often pushes aside assignments for something more enjoyable. He also struggles making decisions, always weighing the options and getting too lost in the little details to make a decision. Also, being so sociable, he tends to stick his nose in other peoples business, even when it doesn’t necessarily concern him.

background

History

Elliot is the second child of Erica and Steve Clarke. He was born four years after his older sister, Claire. The four Clarkes were a happy, loving family. Sure, the siblings squabbled, but nothing more than the average pair of siblings. They would spend days on the beach together, play games in the back yard, and overall just enjoy each other’s company. Elliot’s next door neighbor, Percy, quickly became his best friend. Overall, his childhood was filled with lots of love and laughter.

Things took a turn for the worse when Elliot was eleven. He could remember his mom getting the phone call. His father had a heart attack while he was at work. He and his sister were left with a babysitter for what felt like an eternity until his mother returned from the hospital with the news that their father didn’t make it. It was a devastating blow. Erica did her best to maintain a sense of normalcy for her children.

With time, Elliot returned to his usual, outgoing self. The family adjusted to their new normal and carried on as Steve would have wanted them to.

As a teen, Elliot found himself drawn to skateboarding, using it as his main mode of transportation. Surfing was an interest too. However, nothing could touch the love for Star Wars and movie making that he shared with Percy. He didn’t care if people found it nerdy. He liked what he liked and nothing would change that.

Life took a turn again his junior year of high school when his mom got remarried. She married a man named Hiroto Saito, who moved in with his daughter Naomi. Elliot was happy his mom was happy and liked the pair well enough.

Now, he’s facing his senior year. He’s not entirely sure what he wants to do with his life, but he’s sure he doesn’t want to end up as some pencil pusher. Here’s to hoping he can work it out by the end of the year.

ADDITIONAL INFO

—Always has a shared Star Wars themed birthday party with Percy

—Joined the fencing team freshman year

—Still has Star Wars sheets on his bed

—Pretty good at skateboarding and surfing. Wants to try snowboarding.

—Always coming up with movie ideas to make with Percy

From the outside, Maddie looks like any other popular girl from the nineties. With her blonde hair and green eyes, she's been called alluring by guys, which would fuel most girls egos but only annoys her. She tends to dress preppy considering that's what clique she belongs to. She's also a big accessory girly, you'll never catch her without some kind jewelry or purse or something else to really up whatever she's wearing.

While some people may see Maddie as aggressive or cocky, in reality she simply cares too much. Well, she also has anger issues when it comes to guys, but those are just because she never went to therapy... Her issues have only manifested physically once though and that was when she was being harassed by Brian Maxwell, so really it's on him. Usually she just glares or exposes them for the asshole they truly are.

Maddie is a girl's girl through and through though and holds her friends close to her heart. She has a fear of abandonment and is terrified to mess up or say the wrong thing and lose those she holds dear. She has a very dry sense of humor and is as sarcastic as they come, but she still takes school seriously.

background

section title

As a kid, Madison adored the life she had. She was an only child with two parents who loved and cherished her as if she were their one and only prized possession. This was the case until she turned ten and her mother found out about her father cheating with Madison's teacher... Her parents were separating and while they tried to keep the reason a secret, Maddie immediately blamed herself which her mother wouldn't stand for. For one final familial goodbye, her mother and father stood together and explained what really happened and that if it was anyone's fault it was Maddie's dad's...

This didn't make her feel much better though, in fact it almost made her feel worse. How could her and her mom not be good enough for her father? Were all men like this? Why was it just suddenly okay that he up and left? Her parents tried to do the split custody thing where she saw her father every other weekend, but Maddie was so angry with him she would kick and scream when she had to go. Eventually her father relinquished custody and she stayed with her mom, only hearing from the traitor on her birthday or holidays.

section title

As Maddie grew up, she came to realize that it did seem to be all men that were like her father. Whether it was a nasty comment, bullying, touching someone without consent, or, the worst sin in her opinion, cheating, Maddie refused to be complacent. In seventh grade she put a toad down Jason Hawke's shirt at recess and was seriously reprimanded by her mother. In tenth grade it was spray painting 'cheater' all over Devon Hughes locker, and now as a senior she has her official 'business' down to a science. Girls know to come to her when they have a problem with a guy, whether it be minuscule or huge, they turn to Maddie. She's proud of her work though and while sometimes it gets a little lonely, especially in the romance department, Maddie tries to push that feeling down because no way will she be embarrassed like her mother was.

ADDITIONAL INFO

—has a journal of boys' names that have either cheated in the past or that she thinks would cheat and checks them off after she exposes them for being shitty people

—gets strawberry ice cream for her and her mom whenever her mom had a tough day

—dances alone in her room to relieve stress, but is actually a really good dancer

—lowkey, she really wants to win prom queen because her mom did

At first glance, the quintissential girl next door. A sweetheart through and through, always jumping at the chance to do a favor for someone else or get her friend a small gift. Despite being a socially inept introvert, Miriam's still longing to form connections even if she struggles to make the first move. Unfortunately, she's still nowhere near close to being popular due to her awkward nature. Now that she's a senior in high school, she's far more behind than most others in her grade and it shows. No boyfriends, no parties, not even a single episode of Beverly Hills 90210. For the most part she's fine with it. But there's still that nagging feeling that she's missed out on so much by adhering to her parent's rules all these years that she just can't shake.

Despite being a good person deep down, she's not without her.....quirks. The mantle of most gullible's been well-earned by all accounts with the girl holding several wild conspiracy theories. Whether credit cards, Dungeons and Dragons, or the impending doom of Y2K, Miriam has innocently freaked out many a unsuspecting bystander through the spiels fed to her by her family. Combining this with a severe case of hypochondria, to the point that she's convinced she's dying at any slight physical ill, she becomes far less of a manic pixie dream girl, and more of a shaky chihuahua to those who spend enough time with her.

Her sweet nature's lent herself to being a figure that people don't necessarily hate or even dislike, and even are slightly fond of, but don't particularly want to be besties with either.

    background

    childhood

The perfectly planned second child. Born to then-college sweethearts now religious fundamentalists, the ever pious reverend Mark Walsh and his "bad girl gone good" spouse Sarah. After getting married and popping out their firstborn Matthias straight after college, the couple had come to a sudden realization. Their decision to go on birth control meant that they weren't truly surrending the outcome of their lives to the big guy upstairs. They had to trust that if Sarah did fall pregnant, things would work themselves out. And so, three years later baby Miriam entered into the world. As the years passed, four more little munchkins came about, all with M names; Malachi, Martha, Mary, and Micah.

In a way, Miriam was to blame for the way the Walshes childhood ended up being. After all it was her birth that almost killed her mother, that had her dad swearing that if she made it through this, he'd dedicate his and his family's entire life to the church. And sure enough, Sarah lived and the Walshes fervent belief was tripled. As such, it was the natural conclusion that while yes their kids would inevitabaly have to interact with dirty atheists, they could at least ensure their kids knew right from wrong so that they could hopefully turn those youths over to the right side. So, until each kid reached 7th grade they were effectively homeschooled, fed information from incredibly questionable sources regarding biology, US history, among other things. If they wanted to socialize, their best bet was to hang around on the driveway and wait for kids their age to come back from school.

As the oldest daughter, Miriam was possibly one of the most socially isolated of the bunch. While the other kids got to play outside, she was in the kitchen helping her mom cook or clean or tend to the little ones to help her prepare for her own inevitable future as a housewife. On the few moments of free time she got, she basically just mirrored what she'd been taught by her parents to do, acting like a mother to other kids. But while the random 8 year old boy who took a spill on his skateboard appreciated the odd girl who tended to his scrape and called for adults, that didn't mean he wanted to befriend her. Her life was a perfectly pristine and isolated cage, her a hapless youth who had no real clue how to be either as wise or experienced as an adult or as youthful and free-spirited as a child.

    Adolescence

Once she was in regular school, things changed-not very much but they did change. It was suddenly clear that the way she was brought up wasn't even close to normal. But the damage had been done, and rather than face the embarrassment of adjusting to a role everybody else already knew how to fill, she clung to her old ways and beliefs even harder. But that complete obliviousness she'd once held was gone forever, replaced by a bittersweet sense of loss for the life she could have had, for the friends she could've made if she hadn't been as isolated as she was. This idea was a scary one, one that meant there was something fundamentally wrong with her. That was too much for Miriam to bear, so she just tried to avoid those feelings as best she could. Because none of it was true. Everything she'd been taught had to be true. If it wasn't, then she'd gone through all of that for nothing. That was completely unacceptable.

Despite her obsession with sticking to the rules laid out by her parents, there was one secret that she'd kept from them which she'd keep to the grave. In the 7th grade, after a student had accidentally left behind Flowers in The Attic. A curious Miriam had gotten her hands on it, and inexplicably gotten hooked despite the fact that it was absolutely not considered acceptable reading by any stretch of the word. Fully aware it was wrong, the idea of having a little something that was just for her became too much to resist. So for the past 6 years she's been steadily cultivating a collection of VC Andrews novels, all with ripped out covers, many in French or Spanish so she could pass it off as practicing for school. Even now as a senior, it's the closest thing to "bad" she's ever done in her life. The idea that she might get caught one day, both for the books and for wishing she were more normal looms like a ghost, making her nauseous at the mere suggestion. Now that she's "failed" at being the perfect daughter and at being a normal teen, she's growing more and more like a shaky chihuahua by the second, just trying not to be caught out as a weirdo and a disappointment.

    ADDITIONAL INFO

Is literally always cold, tends to be bundled up

    — That and since she's told to dress modestly, so almost everything she owns is knee-length and not form fitting at all

The Beginning

Gabrielle Carver was born and raised in Brownsville, a run-down neighborhood within the borough of Brooklyn, New York City. She was the daughter of a high school drop-out who worked as a hairdresser to keep the bills paid, and a drug dealer who, despite not coming around as often as he should, still somehow managed to have the world’s biggest daddy’s girl on his hands. Gabby looked forward to the times when her father would briefly stop by to visit, even if it was just to hand over a wad of cash to her mom or to give Gabby some random stuffed animal or toy that he probably stole from the corner store. She adored her father, even though she shouldn’t have, and in her eyes he could do no wrong.

Despite growing up in a relatively bad area, Gabby still had a decent childhood; She spent most of her days in school, joking around with her friends and doing just enough work to pass through to the next grade, and she spent most of her evenings in her grandmother's dance studio, taking full advantage of all the free dance lessons. It wasn’t until Gabby was in middle school that things started to take a turn for the worse.

Gabby was twelve years old when her father was arrested on drug charges and sentenced to fifteen years in prison. It was also around this time that Gabby’s grandmother, her father’s mom, fell ill. As a result, Gabby started acting out: She began spending a considerable amount of time in detention after school for talking back to the teachers, skipping class, and sometimes fighting a few of her classmates. She’d even started shoplifting clothing items that she knew her mother wouldn’t be able to afford, just so that she could fit in with the rest of her friends. Gabby’s antics eventually ceased once she was tasked with taking care of her grandmother after school. And after going a couple of years without receiving anything in response to her handwritten letters, it didn’t take Gabby long to realize just how big of a loser her father actually was.

Bayshore

Thanks to her grandma’s life insurance policy, Gabby and her mother were able to relocate to Bayshore six months following her passing. Her mother decided that they both needed a new start, and what better way to do that than by moving across the country? The pair had received just enough money to move into a comfortable two-bedroom apartment, and Gabby’s mother quickly found work in a local beauty salon. And despite going into her sophomore year fearing that she wouldn’t mesh well with the kids in Bayshore like she did back home, Gabby soon found herself quickly moving up on the social ladder. She’d successfully made the varsity cheerleading squad within her first few weeks of school, and by the time Junior year rolled around she’d secured a small, close-knit group of friends.

Now in her Senior year, Gabby has been spending a lot of her time dreaming about the future. While she’s applied to several different colleges, she has her heart set on The Juilliard School.

ADDITIONAL INFO

—Joined the varsity cheerleading team her sophomore year.

—Is a hopeless romantic, and spends some of her weekends eating a tub of vanilla ice cream and going on a rom-com marathon.

When you first meet Grace, you will notice that she is a little on the quiet side, reserved, and focused. She is someone who typically knows what she wants and will do what she can to get it. Once you get to know her Grace is someone fiercely loyal and ready to be with you every step of the way to succeed, but will also tell you when you're out of line. She holds honesty above everything, but sometimes to a fault with how blunt she can be. Grace is also kind-hearted, open-minded, and happy to chat and get to know just about anyone.

Although she can be a tad prickly and struggle to let you in, she will if you give her the time. Due to her relationship with her mother, letting people in isn't the easiest. She prefers to keep even her closest friends at arm's length in fear of them leaving. Not that she would admit that to you. Grace is stubborn and can get in her own way at times from that. If she likes you, Grace loves to tease, throw some witty remarks at you, and just spend time with you wherever possible.

likes
photography, large fields, collecting vinyl records, flirty banter, converse, most genres of music, hiking, the quiet at 4am, iced coffee, reading, etc.

dislikes
cinnamon, petty behaviour, white overhead lighting, raccoons, being treated like she’s stupid, country and rap music, ghosts/idea of ghosts, pictures developing incorrectly, etc.

fears
thunderstorms, getting abandoned, falling in love, small spaces, etc.

reputation
Grace’s reputation would be fairly neutral. She gets good grades, doesn't hide away from others, and often hears about the drama going on around the school, but also isn’t one to participate unless she’s directly involved. Grace can be seen helping photograph school events, chatting with a couple of friends, or sitting by her locker during breaks. It’s very apparent she’s just waiting for the year to be over to move on from high school. Grace finds the days are dragging on, but nothing exciting is coming her way until she's moved on... right?

background

childhood

Grace doesn’t remember a ton of her childhood, thankfully, she remembers some of the more positive parts of it. She bounced from household to household- or sometimes car- with her sister and mother depending on the person her mother was seeing. Grace doesn’t hold anything too badly about her mother, but also knows the difference between having a mother and then having a mom. As far as she’s concerned, she doesn’t have a mom like others do. She doesn’t like the things that have happened, but goes back and forth on it at times. Unfortunately, the longest stays were just for a month or so. Around the age of 10, Grace settled in with her aunt who now takes care of her and her little sister, Abigail.

present day

The transition to living with her aunt wasn’t easy. In middle school, she acted out and got into fights. Grace just was not used to having some stability in her life, but eventually, the wrinkles were smoothed out. Grace found her own rhythm and could express her thoughts through drawing and taking pictures after her aunt gifted her an old film camera. From there on out, Grace was able to begin working through some of her things and it helped to start at a new school. Of course, life isn’t perfect. Her aunt travels sometimes, her little sister enjoys stealing her clothes, trauma likes to resurface, her mother trying to come back into their lives, and more, but she’s trying. Currently, she keeps a small group that she considers friends and just wants to see the world. Her aunt travels for work sometimes so she’s begun making a list of where to go with so many stories to find.

ADDITIONAL INFO

— Despite the fact Grace is scared it the idea of ghosts, she loves ghost stories. She likes the history of the stories, if based on true events.

— Grace has a five-year-old orange cat named Pumpkin. Abby, her sister, named him and it stuck.

— There has been the odd fling here and there, but Grace hasn't been in a serious relationship. She will say she's not a relationship person, but she is actually a hopeless romantic in denial. There hasn't been anyone that she's felt she wanted to go steady with, but hopes to one day.

— Grace feels like she has to be the stable person that she didn’t have for her sister. When upset, she just runs. Runs until she can’t anymore and hides away until everything is a little less, but she always comes back.

With her perfectly styled dark locks, creamy porcelain complexion, and pin-up girl figure, this ice princess was born to be admired. childhood

being the only child of parents that immigrated from the Ukraine has its perks, but also has its cons. They gave her the name 'Chloe' in hopes that it would give her a more normal childhood, however, her slight accent on certain words made sure that wasn't possible. Not only that, but as she got older it seemed she was cursed with bad teeth and always prone to accidents. A big one was a car accident when she was fourteen, everyone survived, but for about a year and a half, Chloe was wheelchair bound until physical therapy slowly began working on her legs. By the summer before senior year, she was walking once more and her parents had never been more proud. .

present day

Before beginning her senior year, Chloe found herself as a summer camp counselor. She liked it enough, although even the younger kids she was in charge of made fun of her slight accent... It was something she was used to though, even those students that she'd known and gone to school with all the way up to twelfth grade still made fun of it.

During camp one day, the kids were playing dodgeball and Chloe wasn't paying attention. Within seconds a ball had smacked her right in the nose causing it to break almost immediately. It was bruised and her parents had to come and get her, considering she refuses to drive anywhere herself. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise though, her father was an acclaimed plastic surgeon and with the broken nose he'd have to do a procedure anyway. So, Chloe got a nose job before senior year and the week before classes began she got her braces off and never had to wear her retainer again.

Now she's heading into school with the same mind as old Chloe, but a very, very different look.

Georgia has never been a warm and fuzzy person. Granted, she’s certainly not mean, but nobody would say she’s particularly friendly. She’s very self aware and set in who she is. So, she doesn’t give a shit about what anyone else thinks of her. She will say exactly what she thinks and won’t sugar coat it to make you comfortable, which can certainly be uncomfortable. Again, she’s not cruel, just honest. Georgia may not care about what people think of her, but she is still affected by what people say. With a short fuse, she is very quick to anger. She does what she wants without considering consequences, making decisions at the drop of a hat. Luckily, she can roll with the punches and adjust herself to deal with whatever situation she finds herself in.

Background

Debbie McCormick and Danny Quinn were only 16 years old when they found out they were going to be parents. Neither of the pairs sets of parents were supportive. Having no other choice, the pair dropped out of school to start working to support themselves. The pair were able to scrape up just enough cash to get themselves a small apartment in time for Georgia’s arrival.

The family bounced from place to place until Georgia was about nine, when they settled in the trailer home they still live in today. Debbie and Danny got married that same year. Despite all the odds of a high school couple, the pair were just as in love with each other as they were at sixteen. Even through all the stress of a teen pregnancy and very limited finances, they have a fairly healthy relationship.

However, the pair rarely have much time to pay attention to Georgia. Debbie works as a housekeeper for the wealthier families in Bayshore and Danny works as a line cook at a local restaurant. They both work long hours to just keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. So, Georgia grew up having free reign to do as she pleased.

Knowing that college was never going to be an option for her family, she decided to stop caring so much about school. It was all pointless anyway. So, Georgia made a habit of skipping class and ignoring assignments. Honestly, it’s a wonder she made it this far. In reality, Georgia knows what she needs to do to achieve the most basic of passing grades to get through the year.

Of course, her parents want better for her, but they really don’t have the capacity to enforce anything because they are so consumed with work. Of course, everyone assumes Georgia will either be failing our or dropping out before the end of this year, however she plans to graduate like everyone else. She’s made it this far, so it would be a shame to waste all the (minimal) work she did. Also, she resents the fact that they expect her to not make it through the end of the year, intent on proving them wrong.

ADDITIONAL INFO

—Works for her mom on weekends to help with household expenses. She picks up some odd jobs to put gas in the (shitty) car she bought last year and to buy cigarettes/anything else she needs

—Absolutely terrified of thunderstorms. She does cry and covers her ears and will threaten anyone who knows to keep it to themselves

—Has a pretty decent relationship with her parents

—Staunch feminist

—Vegetarian

—Rarely drinks and won’t do any drug stronger than weed

—Despite her disdain for school, she really enjoys reading and writing. She actually gets decent grades in English

—Can sing well but refuses to do it in front of other people

Oliver at first glance is a bit loud, energetic, and loves to chat. He’s happy to strike up a conversation with anyone and everyone to see where it will take them. He is definitely a jokester that tries to bring in some positivity to his surroundings with puns, dad jokes, and even witty comments. He enjoys being surrounded with people as being alone too long will cause him to get irritable. So, he’s easily found chatting with friends or trying to find the next party. At times he can be a quite stubborn and reckless at the expense of himself, but does his best to ensure others around him are safe.

Underneath it all, he is quite more sad and angry than he lets on. Oliver does his best to process and get through it, but sometimes that’s a hard thing to do without any support. However, he’s hard to crack open to know what’s truly going on. He gets anxious that he’s a burden and that is something that lays deep within him. The boy can only take so much so there are times if he doesn’t use an outlet, such as painting, it’ll all just come out out of him in a series of tears and rambling. He tries to not let it get to that point though. Oliver knows what it’s like to go through the world alone and tries to make sure others don’t have to whenever he can. Even if it’s just a little thing of small talk in the morning. After all, the little things in life are what matter most.

dislikes
being underestimated or controlled, talking about his old school, being alone, extreme hot or cold weather, his parents, etc.

fears
failing or hurting those he cares for most, large dogs, having no control in his life, etc.

reputation
Oliver's reputation tends to edge a little more on the popular side. After moving to Bayshore in the 10th grade he has definitely made his presence known though being one of the best runners on the track team and attending any party he’s able to. Teachers aren’t always his biggest fan and don’t think that he takes his academics seriously since he’s always making jokes and struggles to concentrate in classes, but doesn’t want others to know he’s struggling. It’s just easier to do schoolwork on his own outside of the classroom with people watching. If you see him in the hallway, he is usually happy yo start up a conversation or keep you company if you need it.

background

childhood

Right from the start, Oliver was the child that wasn’t wanted. His parents already had their golden child, Mason, so he was definitely a surprise when he came into the world six years after him. However, they did try their best to hide it by showering him with money and expensive things to keep his attention preoccupied. At a young age Oliver still noticed the dynamic shift when his parents spoke to his older brother compared to him. Mason was the child who wanted to be a doctor and star on the football team. As he grew into this he acted out. There was so much anger inside of him that he had no idea how to properly express. He got into several fights, suspended, and even expelled from a few schools before his father decided to enrol him into boarding school. At this school, Oliver had the time and resources to explore different things that he enjoyed. Those things happened to be running and art. He thrived in this school due to being away from his family and actually being able to be at peace and find himself. Unfortunately, all good things don’t last long. At this school he was introduced to partying and one night there was one that got a little too wild. Oliver was convinced into trying something a bit stronger than weed- which had had done before, but unfortunately it was laced and ended up overdosing. Of course, he ended up surviving and being okay, but his family took him out of the school instantly.

present day

After the ‘boarding school incident’, Oliver moved and transferred to Bayshore in the middle of grade 10. He is currently doing decently okay in his classes, but most of his attention is spent elsewhere. Oliver is on the track team mainly focussing on sprinting short distances. Despite being from a wealthy family, Oliver occasionally works at a local coffee shop that allow him to display his art. He is grateful that he’s made it to senior year, but currently trying to save up and set his life up so he can move out of his parents house after graduation.

ADDITIONAL INFO

— When he was younger he was attacked by a large dog, so he tends to be very wary around them.

— Oliver tries his best to spend all of his time away from his household. He’s often found staying late at school, the skate park, crashing with friends when possible, or out and about for a casual run somewhere.

— He has a small sketchbook that he carries around with him wherever he goes. Oliver is not very open with his art, excluding art classes, since he tends to get dismissed and rejected for liking it by his father. His art would look something similar to henrik aa. uldalen‘s (henrikauu on instagram) paintings.

— Oliver has both ADHD and Dyslexia.

— He is fluent in English and Norwegian, but is learning a little bit of American Sign Language as well out of pure interest.

reputation
quite the first impression when she first transferred in sophomore year. she was unashamed of her situation and simply ignore those who made speculation about her pregnancy. it wasn't until the following year when she was registering for classes with two babies in tow that everyone got their confirmation. since then she has had plenty of rumors and whispers surrounding her, but she doesn't care.

background

childhood

the middle child of a large family, catalina was always a unique child and her parents alexia and jaime picked up on this quite early. she liked to go with her own flow and was definitely a bit of a rebellious kid, usually getting into trouble with her older brothers. spain was her playground and she knew how to get around her hometown with ease. as she grew older, it was pretty normal for catalina to sneak out at night in order to hang out with friends or check out something that was off-limits. this usually resulted in a swift spanking and lecture before sunday school, but she never really learned her lesson. but she did her best to keep her family's reputation intact and didn't want to bring shame to them. this usually meant she helped at their church and did her best to make up for any damage or rumors that started because of her.

when middle school hit, she realized there was a lot more for her to do and she kind of started to hang out with the wrong crowd. most of them were delinquents and did things like breaking into candy stores, going on the docks at night, etc. while she never did anything bad, she still participated and that caused enough of a risk for her. she didn't really grasp the concept of how much trouble she'd get into if she was ever caught, but one night was a wake-up call for her. one of the kids in their rag-tag group fell into the water after messing around with one of the boats. it was a really traumatizing thing for catalina to experience as a bunch of 11-13 year olds did their best to pull their friend out of the murky waters. they were unharmed but catalina's parents found out (after the police escorted her home) and she stopped hanging out with that crowd.

present day

Upon entering high school, her doom was in the form of lucas perez. he was someone she had grown up with and attended the same church as her but they never hung out or really interacted until a party in their freshman year. there were instant sparks between the two of them and that meant it was only natural for them to start seeing each other. but because of the restrictions placed on both of them by their parents, they kept it relatively quiet and tried not to make a big deal out of their relationship. it was difficult but they did their best. as time passed and they fell more in love, their rules for the relationship began to fall apart and not make any sense.

and soon enough she was sitting in the school bathroom with a cheap test held between her fingers and two dark lines on it. her world and everything she knew began to crumble. raised and frantic voices overlapped as she sat on a slightly cramped couch, her shoulder barely touching Lucas'. her eyes were unfocused and she could only process a few words at a time. it wasn't until her then-boyfriend spoke up that she snapped back to reality. 'i don't want to be a dad.' the room fell silent before an enranged alexia began to yell at him, berating him about how he couldn't take this back and he was the one who impregnated her daughter. the fights ended with the perez family leaving, simply stating they would not be responsible for catalina's child.

to her parents' disbelief, they were unable to say anything outside of defeated hugs for their daughter. it took them about a week before they suggested that she moved in with her maternal grandmother in america to finish high school and have her baby. that way she could avoid judgment from all of her friends and community. catalina was too at a loss to fight them and ended up doing just that. upon moving in with the elderly woman, she began to lead a quiet life. or at least as quiet as possible. she picked up jobs where she could and surprisingly had twins. she now lives a rather stressful life with her grandmother and two children, but she's making the best out of it by keeping up with her grades and saving money from her jobs. she just hopes colleges will accept her and help her achieve her dream job.

His face is soft, his eyes are gentle, and his smile is bright: Steven is a man that straddles a thin, fine line between being mildly cute, and mildly handsome. Otherwise unextraordinary, or just ordinary, Steven is the quintessential "just a guy", with nothing else too stand-out. His hair is just tidy enough to pass, and he dresses in a way that is both comfortable and acceptable, without appearing too threatening.

Steven carries himself like anybody else, with no particular confidence coming from his stride. When confused, he has a habit of biting down on his lower lip and furrowing his brow, as if trying to visualize it in his head.

notes

psyche

Open

Vulnerable

Sensitive

Bit of a dope

Loyal

Patient

Steven is, in a short phrase, a nice guy. Calm, collected, and sometimes surprisingly gentle, Steven is also, unfortunately, a bit of a pushover: always having a tendency to try and put others before himself, he can frequently been seen by himself due to not actively asking to be involved. He tends to wait for things to come to him, rather than vice versa, and this has resulted in him missing many opportunities . Still, it cannot be overstated that he enjoys making others happy, and he doesn't expect much in return.

Though not the most insecure person around, Steven is very self-conscious in private about his lack of passion: he loves life, this much he knows, but he isn't super confident in what he wants to do with his own. More or less average, at best, at everything he tries, Steven doesn't feel a particular calling in his life, and he wonders sometimes if maybe a desk job will be the high point in his lifetime.

While not stupid, Steven isn't the brightest bulb, and can come off dumber than he seems: he can be a bit slow on the uptake, and has a tendency to misconstrue things. He has a noticeable habit of making a face when he hears something he doesn't understand, and tries to process what it means. This sometimes conflicts with his better nature: he has more than once upset someone because he simply did not understand what they were trying to tell him, or forgot a special something they might have mentioned. He is known to have missed his own birthday party.

Steven has no problem being vulnerable and open about his feelings, though this has earned him some ridicule in the past. He's a bit skittish these days, but with friends is still willing to wear his heart on his sleeve. He is a bit self-conscious about this sometimes, but he'd rather try to set an example than risk everybody be too scared to be honest. Ever an optimist, Steven will believe in the better nature of people, even if he is proven wrong time and time again. Whether this is because Steven is good, or Steven is stupid, is in the eye of the beholder.

Steven isn't a particularly noteworthy student, in the grand scheme of it all. He's on good enough terms with (mostly) everybody to be left alone, but besides a handful of folks, there's nobody he's attached at the hip to. He's doesn't tend to stick out like a sore thumb unless he's doing something stupid with his friends, which he can be seen doing, but certainly not often enough to earn him a reputation.

background

Childhood

Steven is the son of Travis and Marissa Hoffman, and is actually originally from Canada. He was supposed to have a sister, just a couple years younger than him, but she unfortunately didn't survive much past her birth. It devastated his parents, and while he was too young to feel the full effects of it, it often left him wondering in later years what it would've been like, to have that sibling relationship. It also had the side effect of his parents growing much more protective of young Steven, even sheltering him. It didn't turn him into a spoiled brat, thankfully, but it did make him a bit socially lax, and very gullible to other people and his perception of their motives.

His childhood, otherwise uneventful, did have a moment that stuck with him permanently: while playing some imaginary game with a young girl, she convinced him of someone hiding in their shed. Led to inspect it, Steven was promptly locked in there by her, and was kept in the dark for a couple hours, unable to escape. Eventually released, this was enough to give him a terrible fear of any room that can be locked from the outside: to this day, he becomes skittish unless certain he can unlock the door from the inside.

It also proved as foreshadowing, as Steven, despite the dreadful nature of the experience, didn't seem to hold any particular ill will towards the girl, or her manipulation of him, and continued to play with her until his family relocated to Bayshore.

Present Day

Besides a busted arm and a few cuts and bruises, Steven's time in Bayshore was completely uneventful: he took up skateboarding for a couple years, tried and failed at guitar, briefly entertained art and poetry until he grew self-conscious of his skills, Steven just lived his best life, spending time with those his age and pursuing a life of leisure and relaxation. Indeed, to this day, the worst thing that happened was a fairly recent event, in which Steven had a falling out with a close friend.

While this is an expected happening in life, Steven took it hard, and personally: having pursued the argument over feeling wronged, the loss of a friend has made him question if he standing up for himself is even worth it, and if maybe it'd be easier to let those around him take charge, regardless of whether he does or does not like it. Being in a somewhat fragile state of mind, while also wondering what the future has in store for someone as uninspired as himself has made Steven most unsure of his lot in life...

ADDITIONAL INFO

—Steven listens to hip-hop - if he tells you this, it means you have earned his trust.

—He wants to write poetry, but doesn't think he's good enough.

—He can, and will, spend several hours explaining the "lore" of whatever game he recently played.

—While not super big on exercise, Steven does go for a jog five nights a week.

Standing at a pitiful 5’3”, Meghan is incredibly short. To her dismay, her curves never quite filled in to make up for what she likes in height, leaving her very lean and skinny. Because of her lack of a figure, Meghan is often very self-conscious about how she looks and often wears padded bras and tighter fitting clothes to accentuate what little she does have. Her honey blonde hair fall in natural beachy waves to just below her shoulders with remnants of black from when she dyed it during her wilder days.

Her favorite, and best, feature in her opinion are her eyes. Wide and evenly spaced, they’re a unique and eye-catching pale green that have captivated plenty of her hookups. She has a very heart-shaped face, with high cheekbones, and full rosy lips identical to her twin sister’s. They look almost exactly the same, but most of the time, it’s easy to tell them apart thanks to Melanie’s curves and Meghan’s lack of them.

At first glance, Meghan is a wild party girl with a bitchy attitude, low standards, and no modesty to speak of. Truth be told, she does love to party, and is that friend that is always down to go out and just have fun, whether it’s playing beer pong at a rager or drinking and laughing around a bonfire on the beach. People see her as bitchy and unapproachable because she has no tolerance for bullshit and isn’t afraid to speak her mind. She doesn’t filter her words to spare anyone’s feelings, and likes to be upfront with everyone about everything so there’s never any question about where she stands. She doesn’t so much mind what people think of her, especially since it keeps everybody at arms length, and that’s how she likes it.

She’s known to sleep around, and she’s not picky when it comes to who she sleeps with, which has resulted in many of her peers calling her slutty and trying to degrade her for her choices. Meghan lets the words glide right over her head, because she knows that nothing they say matters unless she lets it. She knows why she is who she is, and she owns it rather than hides from it, because her habits keep her grief and loneliness at bay, and she isn’t willing to give that up.

background

Childhood

Annabelle Mitchell was only fifteen when she discovered she was carrying a pair of twin girls. Raised by a deadbeat, drug addict mother and an abusive father, Annabelle’s pregnancy was the result of her parent’s neglect. They paid so little attention to their daughter that they didn’t even realize what her “uncle”, her dad’s best friend, Drake, was doing to their daughter until it was discovered she was pregnant. Unwilling to admit to their little town that they’d allowed their daughter to be sexually abused, her parents told everyone Annabelle had gone and slept around. In her tiny Georgia town, filled with bible-thumping hypocrites and small-minded bullies, she was ostracized and kicked out of her house, thrown aside even by the man who’d impregnated her. With no money and nothing to her name, Annabelle hitchhiked her way across the country over the next couple of months until she landed in Bayshore, CA.

She spent the next few months working as hard as she could to secure a place to live, managing to rent a room out of a nice old woman’s home since all her children had grown up and moved out. Just a month after she was finally settled, she gave birth to beautiful twin girls, Meghan and Melanie Mitchell. Despite what her girls had come from, Annabelle loved her children with everything she had to give. She worked multiple jobs, day in and day out, to ensure a roof stayed over her head and they always had food in their bellies. This meant that for most of their early years, they spent their time with the old woman their mother lived with. Beth Holmes was a kind-hearted old woman in her late sixties with four grown children, but no grandchildren for her to spoil. She took to taking care of Meghan and Melanie like they were her own, helping their mom to raise them and give them a good childhood. Though they didn’t get all the toys and new clothes and material things that all the kids they went to school with did, they were always showered with love and affection. They never questioned where their dad was, and Annabelle never spoke of it, believing it to be in the past.

Life was quiet until the girls were thirteen, attending their last year of middle school. It started off like any other day. They got up, Beth made them breakfast, and they went off to school. The two girls even scrounged up some change from doing chores for Beth around the house in order to buy their mother a necklace at the store down the street from their house for her upcoming birthday. When they got home and found Beth in the living room with two officers from the Bayshore Police Department, they got the news that changed everything. That morning, their mother’s body had been found in the parking lot of her part-time job at a bar in town. She’d been abused, beaten, and left to die on the pavement. The police said they were investigating, but Meghan didn’t remember anything else from that conversation.

Present Day

The news rocked both girls’ world, but it Meghan harder than her more level-headed twin sister. Beth loved them like her own, and with no father listed for the girls to be sent to, she immediately volunteered to take them in and finish raising them. Though she did her best, the girls needed their mother, and without her, things quickly took a turn for the worst for Meghan. Starting the summer after they finished eighth grade, Meghan got herself mixed up with all the wrong kinds of people. Unable to cope with the loss of her mom, Meghan turned to filling the hole she’d left in her life with drugs, booze, and sex. By fourteen, she’d lost her virginity. By fifteen, she’d been with at least five different guys, most of which were at least two years older than her and known to be delinquents. All of the meaningless encounters and the booze and the drugs kept her grief at bay and helped her fill a void. She pulled away from Beth, away from her sister and her friends, dyed her blonde hair black and got a few tattoos. Beth tried to reign her in, but she was too old to handle a teenager with the kind of trauma and issues Meghan was facing.

Meghan’s first two years of high school at Bayshore were a haze of sex, booze, and alcohol. She’s pretty sure her sister’s the only reason she even passed both grades, and thanks her by being protective and supportive of her sister in every way she can be. She’s incredibly proud that Melanie kept her shit together…for the most part. Junior year was when she started easing off the crazy a bit, knowing if she didn’t stop with the delinquent behavior, she’d end up in juvy with a record and never amount to anything–something she knows her mother would be so disappointed about. She separated herself from the seedy crowd she’d become a part of, dyed her hair back to blonde, and focused on her schoolwork, managing to scrape through junior year with a C-.

Now, Meghan still loves to party, is still known to drink and smoke on occasion, and is widely known around school to be in bed with a different guy (or the occasional girl) every week, but she’s not so bad that she’s going to ruin the rest of her life. She wants to get through senior year, graduate with a decent GPA, and then go to college to make herself something her mom would be proud of.

ADDITIONAL INFO

—Has a secret photography portfolio in a box beneath her bed

—Has had several pregnancy scares since her freshman year

—Secretly hopes to find a guy (or girl) who gets her that she could see herself going steady with

—Will not hesitate to retaliate against anyone who hurts her sister

Standing at the same pitiful 5'3" height as her twin sister, Melanie weighs just a bit more than Meghan thanks to her existent, albeit small, curves. Though there are plenty of girls at school with a better figure than hers, Mel is just grateful to have even just a little one.

As far as her features, Melanie shares Meghan's pale green eyes, heart-shaped face, high cheekbones, full lips, and bright smile. She dresses very differently than her tom-boyish twin, usually seen in dresses, skirts, and blouses in various pastel colors that add a little light to her days, even when things seem dark.

If you don't know her, Melanie comes off as extremely shy and softspoken. She is super introverted around people she doesn't know or completely trust, for many reasons. It takes a lot to convince her you're worth her trust, but once you have it and she opens up, you'll never find a more loyal and supportive friend. Melanie values everything and everyone around her and works hard to ensure all the people in her life that matter to her know that. She learned after her childhood and her mother's death not to take anything for granted. In honor of her mother, Melanie works hard at everything she does, striving to be the young woman her mother always told her she could be. She's very intelligent, so excelling in school comes naturally to her.

Unfortunately for her, her intelligence doesn't seem to protect her from being incredibly naive, at least in the past, which has led her to make some choices that changed her life. Her shyness and inability to trust lead her to struggle make and maintain meaningful friendships and relationships, which results in a sense of loneliness and isolation that can be hard for her to overcome. All of which cause her to be a little extra anxious, especially in high stress situations.

Melanie doesn't have much of a known reputation around school. Most people don't notice her, and those who do don't have much to say because they probably don't know all that much about her besides that she's Meghan Mitchell's soft-spoken, shy, boring twin sister.

The police said they were investigating and continued speaking to Beth, but Melanie could barely process the words.

Present Day

The news of their mom’s death turned both girls’ worlds upside down, and they both dealt with it in their own way. Where Meghan turned to partying and alcohol, burying her grief under sex, booze, and drugs, Melanie buried herself in schoolwork and in books, retreating into her own little world where fairytales existed and anything was possible. She drifted away from everyone in her daily life, turning her mind into a shelter that was protected from the ugly truth of her mother’s death within the pages of the books she read. Between trying to keep up with Meghan and trying to deal with their mother’s murder investigation, there was little Beth could do to keep Melanie from disappearing inside herself.

Melanie stayed that way for almost two years following her mother’s death, simply going through the motions of life like a silent ghost, and then she met him. Dixon McConnell. In the summer between sophomore and junior year, Melanie signed up to do an over-the-summer history project with a partner for extra credit, and she went to the public library to meet them at the beginning of summer, and there he was. He sat by the window, a pair of wired headphones around his neck and a busted-up Walkman covered in duct tape in his hand. He was wearing a pair of washed-out blue jeans, worn out sneakers, and a robin’s egg blue hoodie that accentuated his seafoam green-blue eyes. His sandy brown hair, longer on top than on the sides, was falling down into his face as he flipped through some kind of encyclopedia. He was the most captivating thing she’d ever seen, and when he looked up and smiled the breathtaking smile she’d never forget, she knew she was already gone.

They spent the whole summer together, either working on their project or hanging out at the beach or hiking along the trails in the local parks. They volunteered at animal shelters, spend countless nights on her couch at home watching every movie they could think of. They both fell hard and they fell fast, but Melanie loved every second of it, so when junior prom came around, they didn’t hesitate to take their relationship to the next level. They were so in love–nothing else mattered. A few weeks later, Melanie missed her period, and asked her sister to buy her a pregnancy test. When it came back positive, she took seven more to make sure before she felt any sort of reaction. Half of her was terrified that she’d ruined her life, terrified Beth would kick her out or Dixon’s parents would disown him. The other half, however, was almost excited. She wanted to be a mom, and she loved Dixon, and she knew he loved her. What difference would it really make to have a baby early? They could make it work; they always did.

She told Dixon the very next time she saw him, and he agreed with her. He was worried, knowing it would be difficult and that telling his parents and Beth likely wouldn’t go well, but he loved her, and he knew she was going to be his family one day anyway, so it happening sooner didn’t matter to him, even if they were only fifteen. They waited a week until they got in to see a doctor to get a blood test, and then they went to their guardians together and told them all at once. Beth simply smiled and advised them it would be difficult, but she would support them, having learned the girls’ mother’s story when Annabelle was still alive. Dixon’s parents were less positive, but in the end, they liked Melanie, and they knew their son loved her and would take full responsibility to care for her and their baby so they gave them their blessing and offered their support.

Four months into her pregnancy, on her sixteenth birthday, Dixon got down on one knee and asked her to be his wife. She’d said yes with tears in her eyes, counting her lucky stars to have found him so early on in life. They knew their wedding would wait until they were done with school, but that didn’t matter. It was enough to feel the weight of the ring on their hands and remember the promises they signified. She went to school during her pregnancy, but she felt no shame and the judgment went unheard and ignored because she knew her love for Dixon was all that mattered. When the day for their baby’s arrival came, it was a Sunday. They were attending church, in the middle of the preacher’s sermon, when her water broke. Excited to welcome their baby into the world and meet them, Dixon and Melanie rushed to the hospital in Dixon’s truck, but it was the middle of winter, and the rocks were still slick with black ice.

One minute, Dixon’s smiling at her from the driver sheet while they’re driving to the hospital, and the next, the truck hit a patch of ice he couldn’t see and spun out of control. It skidded into the curb, hit it, and rolled three times into a ditch on the side of Bayshore’s only main town road. The panic in Dixon’s eyes and the sound of his voice calling her name were the last things she remembered before she woke up in the hospital a month later. The room was filled with balloons, cards, and around her bed sat her sister, Beth, Dixon’s parents, and his younger sister Alice. The grim looks on their faces could never have prepared her for the news they delivered, and she was sure her answering sob could be heard for miles. They told her the truck had rolled, and both she and Dixon had sustained serious injuries. They told her they’d done everything they could, that she and her baby, delivered by C-section while she was in the OR, would be alright, but that Dixon simply hadn’t made it. They told her he was brain-dead on arrival to the hospital due to severe head injuries, and succumbed to his injuries just a few hours later.

Melanie was devastated, having lost another person that she loved, who was supposed to be there to witness everything she would do with her life, who was supposed to be there to witness their little boy grow up with her. She spent a month in the hospital before they sent her home with her baby, and little Dixon Matthew McConnell Jr became the lifeline that keeps Melanie going after what she’s lost and drives her to do well in school so she can graduate, get a scholarship to a good college that will get her good degree, and start a career that will let her give her son the life he deserves–the life his father would have given them both. She loves her son with everything she has, like she loved his dad, and she has no shame that most everyone at school knows she has a son.

ADDITIONAL INFO

—She has a one year old son named Dixon Jr.

—Is tired of being without friends, but is way too shy to put herself out there

—Wears a locket with a picture of Dixon and their son in it around her neck

—Hopes one day she'll find someone who will love her and her son like Dixon would have

Of course, there is a heart behind all the walls he puts up, and a sensitive, thoughtful boy under all the sarcasm. She was a kind, attentive mom, and they always had a close relationship--unlike with his father, Chuck. As a military serviceman, Chuck simply wasn't around much while his son was was growing up. Needless to say, Gideon never developed the same bond with his dad.

Gideon lived a happy life, up until he reached high school. Alice fell ill and rapidly began to deteriorate. By the time she could be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, the prognosis was already pretty bad. Gideon rarely left her side accept for school or practice. With help from relatives, he dedicated all he had to nursing her back to health, but it wasn't enough to stop his mom from eventually succumbing to the disease. Her passing completely devastated him, but Gideon returned to school acting like nothing had happened. All condolences or friends reaching out for a heart to headt were brushed off with some quippy joke to avoid even talking about it the situation.

He couldn't stand how everyone looked at him with such pity in their eyes. He just wanted to pretend everything was fine and normal, at least around other people. Once he got home, he could fall apart in peace, away from any prying eyes that might catch a glimpse of his vulnerability.

    present day

Gideon now lives with his father. Chuck had left the military soon after Alice's death, and currently works as a police officer. The two of them have a somewhat strained, but mostly cordial relationship. Even with his waning interest in football and basketball, Gideon still opts to remain on the school teams. His athletic prowess always made his father extremely proud, and the senior is struggling with the idea of dissappointing his only living parent by quitting sports, even if his heart's not quite in it so much anymore.
