Realistic or Modern Bastard's Tale Lore

The Bastards
Prior to the rise of The Nobility the Colorado wasteland, now called "Culrud," was home to countless warring gangs. Many died in these constant power struggles between gangs, and each day at least one gang would be wiped out. Every now and again, however, one or two would survive. Eventually, survivors from several gangs formed a gang, but instead of following one set of tactics and focusing only on killing and raiding, this gang explored knowledge. They knew it was valuable. They taught each other what they knew and held no prejudice against each other. In all their knowledge and drive to improve lied their power. They went from a single man with a revolver and his adopted son to the most feared gang in the wasteland.

They Bastards did raid, and they did murder, but they held certain values which they would teach to their allies. Everyone was was responsible for their own work, so there would be no slaves. In addition they despised true savages who raped and cannibalized. There came a point where the majority of Culrud was relatively safe for a commoner, though Bastards were brutal to their enemies. But this wouldn't last long, as eventually The Nobility spawned from a military base from the Old World somewhere south of Denver. Their military grade weapons gave them an edge, and soon they took over half the Denver area while the Bastards weren't paying attention. There were an army of Nobility and while The Bastards had many supporters, there were only a handful of real Bastards.

Eventually, those supporters who weren't killed surrendered or kept silent. The Bastards resorted to hit and run tactics, which still gave The Nobility hell. This went on for five years, but a handful of Bastards got sick of life as it were, and accepted The Nobility's proposal. One night when a battalion of Noble soldiers went to stomp out the remains of The Bastards, the betrayers who weren't already among the ranks of Nobles got the drop on the Bastards. Many Nobles died, but in the end all the Bastards were killed. At least thats what most of Culrus believes, but only a handful knows the truth.

Culrud
Like much of the rest of the world, Colorado fell into a state of anarchy and chaos as a result of a number of wars, including nuclear and civil wars. In addition, the sea levels have risen significantly, and while this hardly affects Colorado, it is no longer the "mile high state." While various weapons were used that hurt the environment, Culrud is now a lush green place where animal life is flourishing, even if the wildlife is a lot more...aggressive.

While The Nobility controls the middle and North Colorado, various tribes, cults, and savages inhabit the surrounding areas.

The Nobility
While the Bastards were a small gang with many supporters, the Nobility was an army that ruled and conscripted through fear. During their war against the Bastards, they took territory in Colorado Springs, Denver, Boulder, the DIA and all the way North to Fort Collins. As they took over territories, they began taking guns and most books from people, hoping to keep people stupid and defenseless. In order to scare people into betraying the Bastards, they used brutal fear tactics in the form of public execution including flaying, dismembering and impaling.

Now that they have taken care of the Bastards they are split into various different "houses." There are similarities between some houses, but they Old Old World culture the follow does vary somewhat. There is a house that resembles the old English feudalism, another that resembles feudal Japan. One Noble Lord is like Vlad the Impaler, and has displays of his work all along I-25. To the south there is a house that vaguely resembles Rome, with an arena.

All the houses have slaves, including sex slaves, and all the houses are extremely oppressive. Every subject of the Nobility resents, but fears them.

Nerve Agent
7 years ago, a Nobility expedition was sent to retrieve new weapons of Warfare in order for them to gain power within the State of Colorado, or Culrud as they knew it. They began the expedition with 300 men, going west to Utah, or Ootah. Just like East Colorado, the found badlands in which a large collective of cannibal tribes had formed together to form a powerful alliance known as the Hannibal Collective, this expedition lost many men passing through the State, 50 to be exact.Eventually they headed out to the Idaho territory in the North, which was far more hospitable to the group.
Any resistance they met there was far easier to fend off than the cannibal horse in Oota. They had been gone a few months and the autumn was soon to begin by the time they reached Canadia, a nation warring with a number of Northern tribes. In exchange for supplies and information of a frozen weapons facility far to the west they were hired to slaughter these tribes, the Inuit who had lived in the frozen northernmost land for millennia, who seemed to have been flourishing after the collapse. While the Inuit had a few guns of their own, they were still no match for the Old World military equipment the Nobles were equipped with. Once this ordeal was over with, they'd lost another 30 men to the cold mainly, and a few to the natives.

Their deal complete they followed the information to a mythical frozen land known as Laska, and the advanced subterranean city of Nor-Ad. The expedition was unwelcome there and we're driven further northwest as winter set in. Eventually they reached warmer, but still cold forests in an unfamiliar land beyond a stretch of frozen wastelands West of Laska. They had no maps, nor had they ever seen maps of any place that could be West of Laska.
The local tribes they found drank deer blood and spoke in a strange, indecipherable dialect. They seemed similar to the northern tribes they had destroyed months earlier. These ones were a bit friendlier, and didn’t even have metal instruments, let alone guns.
Eventually they reached a place known as Duga Tu. There held maps of this strange land, written in a language only the expedition scholars could decipher, with great difficulty. These maps directed them to another, much older subterranean facility. This site had poisonous air that slew many of the explorers sent in. Eventually the scholars provided devices to support the explorers breathing, and there they found the weapon they were looking for: A chemical formula that poisoned the very air with a fine yellow mist.
The expedition returns to Culrud after a year of waiting for the conditions to allow them to make the return crossing over the frozen sea. Only 50 of the original 300 made it to Culrud back through Ootah once more

Shaun was among them...

The Crystal Cult

The world after the Fall is full of monsters in the shape of humans, some more terrible than others. The Crystal Cult is particularly heinous group of raiders. Based in Smokeville (formerly known as Commerce City) and the surrounding areas, this group worships "the crystal" which enhances their combat capabilities. On it they feel no hunger, no pain, no fear and no fatigue but it come at a cost. The crystal gives capabilities on the level of a demi-god for a time, but continued use rots a person from the inside. Long term side effects include a loss of grip on reality, increased aggression, general apathy and eventually a loss of humanity.

Crystal cultists are typically scrawny and dirty with sunken but alert eyes. Scabs and scars are typically commonly seen on their bodies from self harm and survived altercations, usually where they are the aggressor. Many are sadists and their territory is littered with corpses ad viscera. They wield crude, rusted weapons such as nail bats and crow bars but some of them have guns (usually in poor condition) and some can craft firearms from pipes and other debris. They have an arena crafted from junk, where they send captives from their raids in other parts of Culrud to be slaughtered for entertainment. They are enemies to the Nobility, but particularly to Daimyo Irushi who holds territory dangerously close to Smokeville and Caesar Todd who takes regular trips to the East.
