What Makes A Shapeshifter

Shapeshifter blood can either run in the family, or from being bitten by another shapeshifter. Basically, those who have the ability to change from two forms - one beast, one human, can be defined as shapeshifters.

The Shift

Shifting occurs under the light of a full moon, which usually occurs once a month. (On some occasions, a blue moon may happen in broad daylight, usually after the night of a full moon, in which shapeshifters continue to retain their human form for a day.) In Moon's Path, shapeshifters keep their animal form, and only shift back to human during full moons and blue ones. Shifting may take about five minutes for the fledgling werebeast, with a fair amount of struggle. For older werebeasts, it can be as short as ten seconds. This process is painful but quick. Older werebeasts can shift at will with a lot of practice, but this is extremely rare.

What Werebeasts Can Do

Basically, shapeshifters can do anything their animal side can, along with the capacity of human intellect and experience human emotions.

Beast Form: A shapeshifter's beast form is made for survival. They are usually well-muscled, lithe, and athletic. Their senses are all heightened considerably in beast form, and again, abilities and physical traits vary with what type of werebeast form.

In both forms: Werebeasts have heightened healing abilities. A broken arm on a werebeast would heal in about three days, and werebeasts are impervious to poison. Werebeasts also have an incredibly long lifespan and age slowly, with the oldest werebeasts topping about 500 years old.

Human Form: Werebeasts in their human forms have much sharper senses than an actual human. Some physical traits of their werebeast form are very visible in their human form, such as their eyes and tufts of hair. (For example, an Ailuran in human form would still have a sleek body and slightly slanted pupils.)

Weaknesses

Weaknesses apply to werebeasts in both forms.

Silver - stops the regenerative properties of werebeasts and burns skin and flesh on contact. The smell of silver also drives werebeasts away.

Fire - This is simply tied into the more animal instincts of a were. Fire is very hard for a werebeast to recover from fully, and of course, fur is incredibly flammable. Usually infections from burns are too bad for a were's healing properties to save it, especially if the burn is third degree and rather large.

Other werebeasts - Some packs or clans of weres have been battling for centuries, and most weres know how to kill other weres rather well.

[Werebeasts can also be killed by other means such as decapitation, falling from great heights, and drowning.]
