Story 100 word Short Story

Your run of the mill Victorian lady
Belle_Sorciere Belle_Sorciere reminded me of an tried-and-true creative writing exercise, the other day. The 100 word short story. And, because I was bored, I decided to try it out again! I don’t usually post my prose on here, because most of my work is in the pile of “trying to get it published,” and publishing it here greatly diminishes my chances. But without further ado....




The Long Ago


When Ellen’s daughter was little, they’d go to the lake every summer. The waters were clear and sparkled in her daughter’s eyes. She’d watched her grow up, go to college, get married. Ellen hadn’t seen her daughter in a long time, she thought. Her world was one of nurses and fog. But mostly, she lived in the long-ago. There was joy, there. Her husband singing to their baby girl.

“Ellen,” said a nurse, “you have a visitor.”

Her daughter stepped into the room.

“Hey, mom,” she said, kneeling by the chair. Her mother smiled blankly at her.

“Who are you?”
