Deputy Headmistress
Bring back what we've forgot,
Setting

The year is 1989, eight years after the end of The First Wizarding War and two years before Harry even learns he's a wizard. Though a scarcely acknowledged fear of you-know-who still lingers in the air, the wizard world is operating mostly as normal. Perhaps you are a new first year student, entering Hogwarts with the likes of Fred and George Weasley, Cedric Diggory, and Angelina Johnson. Or, maybe you are soon graduating alongside Bill Weasley, studying vigorously (or not) for your N.E.W.T.s. Either way, you've found your way to Hogwarts and are welcome. Now please, make your way to platform nine and three quarters.

Plot
This is a Harry Potter universe role play, without the Harry Potter. The events of Harry's life, as depicted in the books, have not all occurred yet. This RP will be focused mostly on life at Hogwarts as the students come of age and attend their classes while trying to keep out of trouble. There will be certain plot points (such as feasts, trips to Hogsmeade, and Quidditch matches) to push character development and interaction. OCs, especially first years (please refer to next tab), would be wonderful, but canon characters are most welcome too. Drama between characters (romance, rivalries, etc.) is highly encouraged.
Just do your best, we'll do the rest,

Guidelines & Rules

1. All first years will be sorted upon arrival at Hogwarts, as per the Sorting Ceremony. (This means that canon characters will be sorted into their respective houses, but OCs are at the mercy of the Sorting Hat.)
2. If you've joined our RP after we've done sorting for the year, you can join as an older year (2-7) or part of the staff. All canon teachers are in place, but I will allow OC assistant professors in each subject who can teach the lower years (1-3) under the supervision of the canon teacher.
3. You are allowed 3 characters in total. They may be whatever year you like, or even a teacher, as long as they follow the above rules.
4. This will be a detailed and (I'm hoping) long-term RP. While quality is more important than quantity, in the interest of substance I am expecting at least a full paragraph (6 sentences or more) per post, at least once or twice a week. Please let us know if you'll be inactive for a while, in advance!
5. Let's all be polite to each other and work together to have a good time.
6. I'm sure you know the usual rules by now, but just in case: no GMing, Mary Sues, or controlling/harming other people's characters without consent. etc..
7. Less of a rule and more of a suggestion, but the group discord can be found here: https://discord.gg/k3k67hT. You are not required to join at all, but it's a handy tool for communication.

And learn until our brains all rot.

Hm. I don't believe I've seen you here before. I don't know you. First year, then?

[He looks you up and down before giving you a knowing smile to ease your apparent nervousness.]

It's alright, I get it. My little brothers are first years too. George and Fred Weasley. Little troublemakers, they are. Maybe you'll meet them on the train. But on second thought, it's probably better that you don't.

[He laughs.]

Here, let me help you with your bags. Don't worry, they'll be sent up to your room when we get there. Now, when you get off, you'll be looking for Hagrid. He's a big guy, you won't be able to miss him. He'll take you on the boats to the Great Hall, where you'll get sorted.

What? Yeah, sorted. You know, into one of the four houses. You don't know? Blimey, well. There are four houses. Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Gryffindor - that's the one I'm in - and Slytherin. You'll probably want to stay away from that last lot. Huh? Oh, no, you don't get to pick. The Hat will, at the ceremony.

[The train's whistle blows sharply, a final warning to all intending to get to Hogwarts.]

There's probably still room in one of the compartments of this car right right here. In you go. Chin up, you'll be fine. Just remember to stay as far away from Peeves as you can. What's that? Nevermind, you'll figure it out for yourself. Good luck, and welcome to Hogwarts
.

The Library

You enter the library, just off one of the corridors on the first floor of the castle. You'd gotten a bit lost on the way, trying to figure out which corridor.

The Library's immense collection stops you in your tracks for a moment. Shelves containing more knowledge than you could ever imagine go as far as the eye can see. Almost enough to be intimidating. You note the self-sorting books arranging them on their respective shelves. This place would be a pain to keep otherwise, you muse.

The vulture-like Madam Pince gives a sharp glare until you remember yourself. In a hurry, you duck behind one of the shelves, into a row you've never been to before.

Now, if only you could remember what it was you were looking for...

books available to you in the stacks > An Appraisal of Magical Education in Europe (class information, sorted by year)
> Quidditch Through the Ages (rules on quidditch + team listings)

"When in doubt, go to the library."

An Appraisal of Magical Education in Europe
YEAR 1: All first-years at Hogwarts must take seven subjects: Transfiguration, Charms, Potions, History of Magic, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Astronomy and Herbology. Flying lessons (on broomsticks) are also compulsory for 1 year.

YEAR 2: Flying may be dropped, but all other classes from year 1 continue.

YEAR 3: At the beginning of year 3, students are required to choose a minimum of two more subjects from the following list: Arithmancy, Muggle Studies, Divination, Study of Ancient Runes, and Care of Magical Creatures. No core classes (from years 1 and 2) may be dropped, but electives may at any point.

YEAR 4: Students may switch the electives they have chosen in year 3, but they must still continue on with core classes from year 1 (the only exception being if they have dropped flying).

YEAR 5: In their fifth year, students meet with their head of house to talk about what type of job they would like to go into. They are then recommend what N.E.W.T. (Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Test) level courses they should take to follow that path. Towards the end of the year, fifth-year students take their Ordinary Wizarding Level (O.W.L.) exams to determine whether they can achieve a score high enough to continue to N.E.W.T.level for the class in the remaining two years.

YEAR 6: In the sixth year, if a student has scored high enough on his or her O.W.L. exam for a certain subject, they can take a N.E.W.T-level class on that topic (this is for every class). This means that if a student does not score high enough on his or her O.W.L., he or she cannot advance to the N.E.W.T. level class, even if it is part of the core curriculum (so, students may drop some core classes by failing their O.W.L.). Very specialised subjects such as Alchemy are sometimes offered in the final two years if there is sufficient demand. Students in the sixth year may also elect to take part in Apparition lessons for a fee of twelve Galleons. Sixth-year students may take any number of classes as long as they meet the O.W.L. requirements.

YEAR 7: The final year. Students may continue with their N.E.W.T. level courses chosen during their sixth year. At the end of the year, if their chosen job path requires it, students will sit their N.E.W.T. Exams (Some jobs only require O.W.L.s).

Quidditch Through the Ages

Every now and again, Hogwarts will host a Quidditch match. Since first years are not allowed to join House teams, this will be more of a social event for them.

For those who are old enough to play, I will be deciding who wins or loses before the match begins. Any of those in the two participating house teams are free to make a post (or a few) about their characters playing the game (always feel free to use the Great Hall to collaborate with other players). This will lead into the end of the game, where our characters will celebrate with (or comfort) the players from their respective houses with a small feast in the Great Hall.

The next day, we will repeat the process with the other two house teams. Students from the houses that are not participating in the match are free to attend or roam the castle/do what they see fit.

The big thing here is that I don't think we can keep the pace of the RP and still play out the entire game. So, your characters will have a chance to have a post or two about playing, and we'll have a couple about the game over all, but then I think we'll move on.

As a reminder, every team is made up of seven players. Three chasers, two beaters, one keeper, and one seeker.
