ashley johnson
—basics

name: ashley johnson
nickname(s): ash
age: seventeen
gender: female
sexuality: heterosexual
race/ethnicity: white

—appearance

hair: brown, wavy
eyes: brown
height: 5'6"
weight: 110lbs
dist. features: braids & freckles
wardrobe: ashley's style was, to say the least, unique. although her style fluctuated often depending on her mood and tastes at the time, one thing is true, everything she wore was one-hundred percent her. she wore whatever she wanted whenever she wanted and never worried about standing out.
face claim: scarlet robinson

—persona

positive traits:
— confident
— down-to-earth
— kind & compassionate
— fearless

negative traits:
— mysterious
— distant
— disorganized
— unpredictable

likes:
meeting people and forming meaningful relationships, outdoors and spending time in nature, comedy movies and rom-coms, unique fashion, puzzles, & more.

dislikes:
opening up about deeper emotions, people picking on her friends, bigots, the color black, being alone, & more.

fears:
ironically, ashley was most scared of dying. although she was as healthy as they come, she used to always tell her friends that she had a strong feeling she was going to die before she was twenty. the weeks leading up to her death, she mentioned it more.

—background
like most of the people living on rotherham's island, ashley was born into a wealthy family although they hadn't been the most wealthy on the island. although she wasn't raised in a fancy antebellum like many of those, she did grow up in a large home directly on the beach from her birth until her untimely death at seventeen. there wasn't anything necessarily special about her life. she had two parents — her father was relatively distant as he spent most of his days working at a law firm mainland but she had a good relationship with her mother. she grew up well liked in school. during elementary, she was bullied, but most of it stopped when it became clear that she was unashamed of being herself and wouldn't let harsh words harm her. after that, she became relatively popular in school. she just had this thing about her. she was a kind spirit, someone who got along with anyone and everyone and managed to fit into every clique there was.

despite being well-known and well-liked, she's always been shrouded by this cloud of mystery. nobody really knows where it comes from but it's always been there. she was curious in nature. she longed to learn how the world worked, how people worked. she wanted answers to everything and stopped at nothing to figure it out. she'd been able to form deep relationships with many people but regardless of how close she got, she rarely opened up beyond her surface level. the weeks leading up to her death, she became even more mysterious and distant in nature. she seemed more finicky and panicked, truly a rare occurrence for someone who was usually so confident and care-free.

The NPC's

  • Name: Kimberly Cayson
    Nickname: Kim, Berri
    Age: 17
    Gender: Female
    Sexuality: Pansexual
Appearance: Kim is mixed race, since her dad is black and her mom is white. She has light brown skin and curly, but not coily, black hair, which is cut just above her shoulders. She has bangs that loosely cover her forehead and touch her eyebrows. Her eyes are the same bright brown as her dads, but she has the slim build of her mom. She’s 5’5 and not that curvy, but that’s hard to see anyway, since she wears loose fitting shirts and sweatshirts anyway. She doesn’t do much with her hair, the most she’ll do is pull it into a bun, and she doesn’t wear makeup, but she does enjoy wearing skirts and dresses. On her right wrist are two friendship bracelets and a charm bracelet; all of them are from Ashley.
Brief Bio: Kim is known around town as the police chiefs kid, and she doesn’t mind the reputation. She’s somewhat popular and she likes to believe she’s well liked, since she’s pretty relaxed about people doing certain things. Other stuff, though, she has to draw the line. If it’s dangerous or harmful, then she’ll get annoyed and list various reasons why doing that thing in particular is not the best idea. She’s intelligent and quick to figure things out, and she likes to go around town and talk to people to learn about all the rumors. Almost all of the adults on the island like her, since she’s helpful and friendly, but she does know that there are some people on the island who aren’t her biggest fan.
History with Ashley: Kim was Ash's best friend. The two were like sisters - they grew up together and always had each other's backs. They stayed at each other's houses every week, every Friday night, and it's safe to say that Kim knew Ash the best. Even better than Ash’s boyfriend. Well… that’s what she likes to believe. After all, they were childhood friends. She knew Ash’s secrets, and that she was bad at math but hid that fact, and that she was always making new friends at school. They had stupid jokes together and reminded each other of embarrassing moments, and Ash taught Kim to be a better person.
Her world seemed to end when she found out that the girl she had known all her life had died. It wasn’t a suicide. Kim knew that it had been murder, both because she was a nosy police chiefs kid and because Ash had been acting weird as hell. Scared. Ash had been scared, and Kim had tried to help, but she failed.
She can’t forgive herself, and she’s determined to figure out what happened. She’s the daughter of a cop. She’ll get to the bottom of this entire horrible situation, for Ash.

gender: Male

Sexuality: Heterosexual

birthdate: February 27th

ethnicity/background: Ashkenazi Jewish, French

024D-0027-front-main-8.jpg

occupation: Junior at Rotherham's Island High; shelf stocker at Anna's New and Used Bookstore

—Physical

faceclaim: Chandler Riggs

height: 5'8

weight: 130 pounds

hair: Brown, with a slightly auburn tinge in some lighting.

eyes: Blue

skin: Pale as notebook paper, and prone to blushing

build: Roughly average, if a bit on the scrawny side. Narrow, long limbed and carrying a habitually slightly hunched over posture. Overall, Max is unremarkably teenage-boy-shaped.

wardrobe: Max's clothes are expensive and on-brand, but not trendy or fashionable by any current definition. He favors cool colors, especially green, and has a generally outdoorsy vibe.

disability: Max is Deaf.

—Mental

personality:
Max is a compassionate, empathetic being who is a natural rule follower not easily led astray by peer pressure. To convince him to act against his conscience is no easy task.

His interests are long-lasting and passionate, which can be easily seen if you flip through his stack of sketchbooks, filled with lovingly rendered botanical drawings, pressed flowers, field notes from the shorelines and the tide pools, and so much more. His love of nature, and all its wild and unusual inhabitants, is at the core of his own personal sense of self.

He is honest, careful and incredibly perceptive, but also incredibly emotionally vulnerable, to the point of being often touchy and standoffish. He can come across as either timid and flighty, or sometimes as stiff and unfriendly. His deafness has made him a social outcast who often worries that he isn't wanted anywhere. He openly confides in very few people, much more likely to shut down and refuse to confront his own emotionality. He's a classic bad side of the pisces coin, but good of heart.

likes: Botanical illustration, books, edible wild plants, sketching, beachcombing, birdwatching, The Sims, dogs

dislikes: Intrusive questions, forgetting things, math, grapefruit, school assemblies, the color bright orange, medical appointments

fears: Heights, especially flying in airplanes.

habits: Max is a nervous fidgeter. He rocks back forth on his heels and chews his lower lip when anxious, and is prone to poor posture. He also suffers from seasickness on long boat rides, and in general is not a happy camper in vehicles of any kind.

other: Max can read and write both English and French, and can read lips for both. He can also speak, but has a deaf accent that is a bit harsh for hearing people to get used to at first. He strongly prefers ASL as his language of choice, but will resort to reading lips and speaking if pressed.

—history

Max hails from a wealthy family that dates back generations on Rotherham's Island. The home they live in has belonged to his mother's family for as long as anyone alive can remember. It is currently home to Max and his parents, his maternal grandmother (his grandfather passed away a year ago), and their housekeeper. Most of his extended family on his mother's side also lives on the island or in nearby mainland towns. Though Max has taken his father's last name, the estate and its inhabitants are still most often regarded as "the Bellegarde Household", his mother's maiden name.

His father is a doctor, an oncologist who works at a hospital on the mainland, and his mother is a teacher and special education aide at the elementary school. His grandmother, Eleanor Bellegarde, is the matriarch of the family and despite her advanced age, she runs the household (and to an extent, the whole little neighborhood) with all the decorum and southern charm of a character straight out of an early 20th century novel.

Like his mother, Max has been Deaf since birth. As a child, he hardly considered this a problem at all, and why should he? He had support from all sides, and fireworks of curiosity and optimism. He lived a bright and privileged life with every expectation of an equally luminous future. His love of plants started at his first trip to the botanical garden, and soon spread out to become a passion for natural beings of all kinds. His bedroom soon became a sort of miniature museum of seashells, pressed flowers, rocks and crystals and natural treasures of all kinds. His world gave him everything he needed to be happy; the only thing he couldn't do was hear.

As he grew up, though, starting around middle school, he started to grow distant from his peers. Being such a small community there were almost no other Deaf kids, and as such a communication and language barrier grew between him and the others. Though he wasn't aware of it most of the time, he frequently became the target of gossip and passive-aggressive bullying. What little of this he caught on to, he refused to confront… it was easier to just hide behind his wall of sketchbooks.

The threads of Max and Ashley's stories met by way of Max being hit upside the head by a baseball one gym class his sophomore year.

He never asked why she was there at the nurse's office that day, but she'd caught him signing back to his interpreter and quickly waved his attention, introducing herself. This was the first person he met who knew his language at this school, and he couldn't possibly have been more excited. Finally, someone to really talk to. Being a small island school, he never thought he had a chance at making friends, but Ashley seemed so open, warm and… just all around friendly, and they hit it off right away. They were signing back and forth for so long Max forgot all about the gym concussion he'd come in for… which he was promptly reminded of by passing out cold on the floor. How embarrassing.

But anyway, after that they'd become fast friends. He found out quickly that their fathers had been friends for years, and that their "first meeting" in the nurses' office had been more of a rekindling of an acquaintanceship that had been forgotten for years. Ashley also conveniently worked at the inn near his house, and she'd sometimes drop by the bookstore to wave hello through the shelves. They shared their interests-- he'd leave notes in her locker with carefully pressed flowers and herbs: 'This is Small's Purslane,' one would read, taped to it a small pink blossoming sprig, 'native to the Carolinas. Pretty rare... I looked for a while for this. Edible, but don't eat this sample because I've been saving it in my notebook. I hope the color preserved well. -Max' She'd get a couple of these from him each month, and though he never knew for sure, Max hoped she'd be half as fascinated as he was. In return, she'd leave him letters back, tucked neatly into the slots of his locker.

Their silent little friendship continued much like this for the next year… he never did quite fit in with the rest of Ashley's many friends, but whenever she had a moment alone he'd come find her and they would chat, birdwatch from the school courtyard at lunchtime, share interests and hobbies and facts that Max simply never had the opportunity to share before.

He went home that night of the party to his sketchbooks and his flower presses, to the lights of the inn gleaming softly below the hillside, and drifted off to sleep thinking everything was going to be just as it was when the sun came up again.

The next morning, he learned that Ashley's body had been found.

He felt like he'd coughed his heart up through his throat.

She couldn't be dead, not her, not now. Just a few days ago they'd been watching the hummingbirds at the feeder by the inn, and everything was okay… everything was okay…

"took her own life" his mother tried to explain, but Max knew better. She wouldn't… couldn't have. Something nefarious must have happened that night. And Max Berkowitz was not going to let this case go cold.

❝ bio. ❞

Violet's parents moved to Rotherham's Island three years before she was born. Like most, her parents were fairly wealthy. Her father was a surgeon and before moving to the island, her mother was a model. Growing up, her parents didn't pay much attention to her. They hired a nanny to do most of the work raising their daughter, as her father practically lived at work and her mother, being an alcoholic, wasn't exactly mentally present. Violet learned to be self-reliant as she got older, knowing that her parents wouldn't help her with any problems she might have.
Violet was an intelligent kid. She devoted herself to schoolwork and throughout her school career she has been at the top of her class. But she never did have many friends. Violet was never very trusting of people and was selective with those she became close to. She often came off as cold and judgmental to anyone who tried to befriend her, quickly deciding who she liked (very few people) and didn't like (most people). She was incredibly closed off and had trouble opening up to people. Although, she was incredibly loyal to those few she was friends with.
In middle school, she developed a passion for photography. She was good at it and started carrying a camera everywhere. Entering high school, Violet was known to be quite the loner. With the exception of a couple people she trusted, she didn't have many friends. She became the photographer for the school newspaper and was very involved in her studies. She also became a tutor to anyone who needed the help for some extra money of her own, as she didn't like relying on her parents. When it came time for her to graduate and move on to college, she wasn't too sad like most. She'd miss the few friends she had, sure, but for the most part, she wouldn't miss her life on Rotherham's Island.
Relationship w/ Ashley- Violet crossed paths with Ashley their sophomore year. They had a few classes together and ended up working together on a project in one of them. Violet found that she didn't dislike Ashley as much as she did most people and they became closer, studying together after school occasionally. Ashley wasn't exactly an open book, and neither was Violet. She enjoyed that there wasn't any pressure around their friendship, something she felt was rare to find. When she got the news Ashley had died she was shocked. Even more so when she was informed that it was suicide. Violet knew that that wasn't like Ashley at all and if someone was behind her death, she wasn't about to let her friend go unavenged.

joseph morrison
—basics

name: joseph morrison
nickname(s): joey, jo
age: seventeen
birth date: april third
zodiac: aries
gender: cis-male
sexuality: bisexual
race: white

—appearance

hair: dark brown
eyes: brown
skin: light tan
height: 6'0"
weight: averages around 140lbs — tends to fluctuate towards the lower side because he often misses meals
dist. features: a toothy smile that never quite meets his eyes & dimples
faceclaim: idk whoops

wardrobe: living on the poorer side of the island, he doesn't quite have the luxury of buying high end fashion. most of his clothes comes worn and used from mainland thrift shops. although he spends most of his time sporting no shirt and swimming trunks, it isn't uncommon to find him dressed up. he enjoys fashion more than he cares to admit and genuinely enjoys shopping around thrift stores to find a hidden treasure. when he isn't sporting flip flops and bright-colored swimming trunks, he often opts for a graphic tee, a flattering pair of jeans, and his favorite worn converse.

— persona
most people have nothing good to say about joey morrison. he had too much energy. he was too much of a big-mouth. too stupid. too selfish. too much of everything. he's reckless and dangerous and a good-for-nothing attention whore. he does things big and loud — desperate. he could be ugly and crude in one moment and over-affectionate and tactile the next. he could be the life of the party or the one who could over-step and ruin it, often times both. as much as it hurts to hear, joey knows it's all true. he's too much.

confident & reckless: joey will preach for days on end that he's not scared of anything. while that's absolutely not true, his actions might suggest otherwise. his confidence is a ruse to mask his deeper insecurities but it's as they always say — fake it 'til you make it. while his confidence works out for him often, more often than not his behavior borders on more reckless. he acts without thinking; rarely considers the consequences. if he does consider the consequences... well, most times he just doesn't care. he acts out for attention and to distract himself from the shitty life he was dealt. besides, it's fun.

selfless & loyal: joey has a real hard time trusting people. so, the few rare times he does, he is exclusively extremely selfless and loyal to them and only them. to everyone else, however, he is incredibly selfish and greedy. he sees everything as him vs. the world and has a personal vendetta against most people who were dealt a better hand than him. he takes what he wants when he can. this mindset is one of the leading reasons as to why he's a mild kleptomaniac. while it was for survival at one point, now it's mostly just for fun.

joey is all laid-back and easy going at a glance. he tries to be normal and calm and not the mess everyone knows he is and, for the most part, he does a damn good job of playing the part. he's all convincing smiles that don't meet the eye and exist mostly to convince himself and everyone else that he's fine. and he is fine — until he isn't. it's when the uncertainty crawls up his spine and gets in his head, convincing him everyone hates him. that they'll hurt him. that he better run now before they turn on him too. he throws himself into distractions and bad habits just to grant himself some kind of sense of normal. he feels most like himself when he's high. when he's surfing. when there's nothing on his mind except the ocean and surfing and distractions, distractions, distractions.

positive traits:
— sensitive
— selfless & loyal
— confident
— intuitive
— energetic
— observant

negative traits:
— sarcastic
— impulsive
— hot-headed
— short fuse
— reckless
— selfish

likes:
surfing, fishing, outdoors, running, being right, a nice hot meal on an empty stomach, fights (only when he wins), a relaxing smoke, thieving (especially when it's from the rich assholes who live in rotherham), cheap beer, animals, old movies (especially westerns), loud angry songs, doing whatever he wants whenever he wants, attention (even if it's negative), doing illegal shit just because he's a petty teen who wants to bother the police & more.

dislikes:
the privileged rich snobs that over-populate the island, being home, being alone, loud noises & voices, most vegetables, deep conversations, confronting his many issues, pity, quiet environments, did i mention he hates privileged rich snobs, chocolate, artificial fruit flavoring, milk, school, & more.

fears:
being alone, his dad, proving everyone right by flunking school and staying at the goddamn island his entire life

habits:
smokes when anxious to calm shaky hands, tugs at his hair, taps fingers

vices:
cigarettes, weed, and alcohol

ailments:
clinical depression, generalized anxiety, complex ptsd, and mild adhd — can't afford insurance so he self-treats with cheap booze and cigarettes.

— background
tw: domestic abuse & substance abuse

the marriage between shannon abcott and nathaniel "nate" morrison was an accident waiting to happen. she was an impressionable woman — young, naive, and desperate for a man who could pay her bills because no matter how many times she tried, she just couldn't keep a job. at the beginning, he was that man. he promised her the life she wanted, but just months after their wedding at the langdale botanical gardens, nate showed his true colors. the first time he hit her, he apologized and she assumed it was a one-time occurrence. but one time became two and two eventually became her reality. he knew he could get away with hurting her. she had nothing — no money, no family, nowhere to go. she stayed because she felt like she had to. the only time she ever decided to run was when her pregnancy test came back positive and she decided she wanted her child to have a better life. she had managed to run to the mainland before he found her, dragging her screaming and kicking back to their carnation pink trailer home.

the birth of joseph morrison, just like their marriage, was a mistake — a fact his father dearest likes to remind him of often. his fate was sealed the moment she became pregnant, but as much as she tried, she knew there was no plausible way to save either of them. she was completely unprepared to be a mother but god, did she try. for most of his childhood, she was the only good in his life. although his childhood was filled with drunken rage and bloody lips and bruises all over his body, instead of looking back and remembering the bad times, he only thinks of his mother. he doesn't remember the time he went to bed with the third bloody lip that week, he remembers the same night where his mother curled up next to him and held him until he fell asleep.

joey's life went from shitty but tolerable to just plain shitty when he was in the third grade, just eight years old. just two weeks after the first day of school, his mom just vanished. she dropped him off at school, kissed him on the nose, and told him she loved him. joey remembers thinking she seemed extra sad — she was crying? but he didn't realize he would never see her again. she just left. she packed up her bags and immediately left town the second young joey disappeared behind the school door and she was free. she couldn't take that life anymore; who could blame her? she wanted to take joey with her but he was nothing but a crude reminder of the years she had lost. it was better this way, she thought.

understandably, nate only became more violent after that. he blamed his son, accused him of being the reason she left. joey believed him; he blamed himself too. his mental health declined tremendously after she left him, kick-starting a lifetime of reckless behavior and bad habits that would eventually do him more harm than good. he already wasn't great at school, but his grades declined. he acted out more, took out his rage and frustration and hurt on innocent kids on the playground and got sent to the principals more times in one year than joey could even count.

and he found some ways to distract himself. he took up surfing and fishing and spending as much time on the water as he possibly good by the time he was nine years old. when he was fourteen, he got a job at jack's diner and threw himself into work. he realized distracting himself was an effective way to deal with his emotions from an early age and continues to do so today. you know what they say; old habits are hard to break.

relationship with ashley:
after his mother left, joey struggled to believe there was even good left in people. ashley was the first one to prove him wrong. although they had known each other before, they hadn't really met until the fourth grade. they had been at recess, joey still vividly remembers. she was wearing ridiculous hair-ties with beads so large they made her pigtails fall in odd directions. she wore twinkle toes, the kind that lit up when you took a step. the first time he ever spoke to her, he made fun of them, commenting on how stupid her outfit looked and she didn't even match. unlike any other kid he insulted, she didn't cry. she didn't tattle. she just laughed and insulted him back. he remembers being so bewildered that he couldn't even speak for a good minute after she asked if he wanted to play tag. he said yes, and thus, they started what might be one of the most unexpected friendships rotherham's island had ever seen.

ashley was always there for him in a way that nobody else really was. she understood him. as uncomfortable as being understood felt, joey now wishes he hadn't taken it so for granted when she was still alive. she was so observant — so intuitive. she knew what every single one of his moods meant. she knew the truth behind his lies. she had opened up her home and her life to him — anytime he needed to be hidden from his overbearing father, she let him sleep at her house, often even giving up her own bed so he could get a full night's sleep for once. and he was there for her in return. they would stay up all night talking and exchanging secrets. talking to ashley was the only time in his entire life that he didn't mind having deep conversations because with her it just felt natural. he and her other friends used to joke about how she was a guardian angel sent to their shit town to glue together all their shit lives. he still occasionally wonders if it's true.

joey was devastated to hear about her death, but he still hasn't fully processed that she's gone and never coming back. honestly, at the moment, he's more pissed than sad. more furious than grieving. he knows (knew) ashley wouldn't have killed herself and will stop at nothing to bring justice to the person who did.

galactic's npcs.

name — sunshine st. claire
nickname — sunny
age — seventeen
sexuality — straight
appearance — frankie is one of those people who seem to be better-looking the more they age.

brief description — although so many people immediately see her as this rich, spoiled snob, sunny wishes people saw her for the girl she really is. while she is rich and she is spoiled, she's so much more than that. she's someone who genuinely cares about all people and wants everyone to have the same privileges she does.as daughter of one of the wealthiest names in rotherham's island, there is quite a bit of expectation on her to be this and do that but she has visions of a life greater than that. honestly, she wants to live a humble life. she spends a lot of her time at the local church and volunteering at shelters and charities.

three fun facts
sunny is vegetarian and trying to make the switch to vegan

she is a devout christian! she is currently saving her personal allowance for a mission trip to ethiopia.
she works as a cashier at a local grocery store. her parents disprove of her having a minimum-wage job but she really quite enjoys it and prefers to earn her own money rather than have it given to her.

name — aiden phelps
nickname — n/a
age — seventeen
sexuality — bisexual
appearance — aiden's style, like most people's, changes depending on the event he's attending. while he can impress with his stylish tastes, most of the time, he doesn't dress to impress. on an average day, he is most likely to be seen wearing a sweatshirt (yes, even during summertime), washed jeans, and a bright pair of vans. he's also a big fan of bucket hats and painting his nails! although his simple outfit is the norm, he has been known to surprise people by wearing bizarre outfits to school. once, to make ashley laugh, he wore a full on leopard print suit for picture day. she had a copy in her locker. he has curly brown hair that is rarely dealt with properly; it's usually messy and unkempt.

brief description — most people can agree that aiden is a mess. they mean it in an endearing way! it's simply the truth. he's commonly regarded as the class clown, known to pull off stunts and make stupid jokes if it means earning a laugh out of people. people were a bit surprised when he and ashley started dating but most people can't deny that they made sense. they both had big personalities — loud, they demanded to be heard. their relationship was special. intense, even if they hadn't known each other too long. they were kindred spirits; they just understood each other in ways many people did not. she died before they could take their relationship too far, though.

nobody has heard from aiden since ashley died, which is slightly concerning to those who know him. before her death, he was out-going and exuberant, barely able to be apart from people for long. he also happened to be the last person seen with ashley, so quite a few residents of rotherham's island have their suspicions that it may have been him.

three fun facts
he once passed out in the trunk of his own car after locking himself in it in an attempt to scare ashley

he's secretly obsessed with rom-coms. he'd watch them with ashley and reenact scenes as a romantic gesture to her. standing in the rain with some flowers? he did that. throwing pebbles at her window and sneaking in at night? oh yeah.
he's a pretty decent singer! he has a decent following on instagram because of his covers, usually accompanied by his ukulele and guitar.

name — francesca johnson
nickname — frankie
age — forty
sexuality — straight
appearance — frankie is a woman most known for her radiant smile, the type to light up the room. she smiles with her whole face, accompanied with smile lines and crows eye wrinkles that prove she smiles often. her skin is rather clear for her age aside from the occasional blemish and wrinkle that comes with age. she has thin brown hair that is redyed any time a gray hair makes itself known. she has deep brown eyes that has a certain twinkle of passion about them. although she lives on the richer side of the island, she dresses rather modestly compared to many of the other women of her status. she is often seen wearing patterned blouses and jeans with a pair of cowgirl boots or sandals. when around the house, she's often wearing an apron covered in either dirt or paint depending on her hobby of the day.

brief description — frankie first married when she was just out of high school, marrying her high school sweetheart. he died due to liver cancer nearly five years afterwards, leaving her alone with a one year old daughter. she moved to rotherham's island wanting a fresh start, where she met anthony johnson. she wasn't expecting to find love so soon after her late husband's passing, but anthony was kind and patient and felt right. they married two years after they met. he was a kind father to her daughter, confirmation that she made the right choice. they raised ashley in an open-minded, loving, and nourishing environment.

three fun facts
frankie is an excellent painter but doesn't realize it. her husband constantly tries to convince her to sell her art but she doesn't, opting to give it away instead. many of the houses around the island probably have at least one of her paintings somewhere around the house.

she is in love with the botanical gardens. she often brings her painting supplies to the gardens and sits under one of the gazebos and paints.
she is horrible at cooking. she tries to cook any time any of ashley's friends came over and failed nearly every time. once while kim was visiting, she even started a small kitchen fire.

name — anthony johnson
nickname — tony
age — forty-one
sexuality — straight
appearance — tony is a self-proclaimed "cool dad" and dresses the way he thinks a cool dad would dress. when he isn't dressed in his business suits, it is common to find him dressed in bright floral hawaiian shirts and bermuda shorts. he has one pair of margaritaville flip-flops that he wears all the time. it has a bottle opener on the bottom, a feat he loves to show off any moment he can. he has graying dark brown hair and a well-groomed beard to match. he has a bright blue eyes and a light tan.

brief description — tony is a pretty loveable figure around the island. he was born and raised on rotherham's island. back in the day, he was the star quarterback of the rotherham's island pirates. when he graduated, he attended college on the mainland before returning back to his childhood home after dropping out the second year and opened up his own auto repair shop, something he was good he grew up fixing cars with his old man. a few years after opening up shop, he met francesca johnson and fell head over heels. they married shortly after and started a family. although he wasn't ashley's real dad, he loved her like he was his own. ashley always grew up calling him "dad" anyway.

three fun facts
on his left hand, he's missing his index finger. he had to go to physical therapy for a little bit to figure out how to work without it and is not comfortable enough with his index-fingerless-left-hand to make jokes about it. he tells people a shark bit it off but actually he just accidentally cut it off while fucking around with knives.

since his wife is horrible at cooking, he has taken a lot of it into his own hand. he's gotten pretty good at it! his goal is to make every single recipe in the recipe book he got last year for christmas.
he still owns and works at the shop he opened up in his early twenties.

🍁🍁🍁

Name: Nina Aurora Pelletier

Nickname(s): Ni, Rory, NA,

Age: 18

Birthday: 30 July

Gender: Female

Sexuality: Bisexual, but closeted

Race/Ethnicity: Sudanese and French Canadian
❄

❄❄❄

Appearance: Nina is an 152lb. Afro-French girl that stands a little over 5’6”, so she tends to round it up to 5’7”. She has golden brown skin that remains flawless until the light freckles that sit on her fat nose and high cheekbones, though she mostly hides them with makeup. Her face also holds dark brown, almond shaped eyes with long eyelashes framing them and bold eyebrows looming over. On her lip, on the upper right, there is a small mole that adds a delicate feature to her full lips.

Wardrobe: Nina has a mix of bohemian, trendy, casual, ethnic, and classy. Nina always believed that first impressions were important so dress to impress. She wears things with clean and simple lines, to prints that form a delicate African pattern, to loose fitting clothes with earthy tones, to clothes that look expensive, but you can frequently find her wearing skinny jeans and a sweater when she is just spending time at home. Nina always has a big, black afro that accentuates her Black heritage, but she doesn’t have a problem putting her hair in twists, locs, braids, cornrows, or even wigs. She sometimes puts a little color in her hair, her favorite is burgundy. She has two lobe piercing, an industrial, and her belly button is pierced.

Distinguishing Features: She has a mole that sits on the upper right of her lip. She also has three tattoos: one of her paternal grandparent’s birthdate, marriage date, and death date on her ribs at the left; a minimalistic girl with an umbrella in her right inner arm; and a geometric version of the solar system on her right thigh. Her hair is either in a huge afro or in some protective hairstyle. Under her left boob, there’s a scar.

Face Claim: Chloe Bailey

Personality: Nina is a very quiet girl, always minding her own business; however, that does not mean that she is mean. She is very kind and you can find her with a smile on her face, but only if you are already friendly. If she doesn’t like you and you have proven to be an asshole, she can be an asshole back and she retaliates against negative behavior. She’s been in a few fights against bullies. She trusts herself more than anyone else and makes it hard for others to gain her trust. Despite being an overall friendly person, Nina is still very closed off and hides her impurities and flaws from everyone

Background: Nina Aurora Pelletier was born in Montreal, Canada to French Canadian business entrepreneur Andre Pelletier and South Sudanese surgeon Regina DiJango. She grew up the only child to very wealthy parents and was very spoiled. However, her parents raised her to always remain humble upon her peers, which was kind of ironic since she attended private schools among other elite children since preschool. Her parents always made her pay attention to her studies and participate in sports like track and softball as well as volunteering within the community like at an elderly home or soup kitchen. Overall Nina had a very easy going life, she couldn’t complain and she was looking forward to a great future.

Until she started dating fellow track teammate, Damion LaMontagne at a house party for her 17th birthday. She thought she was in love and would basically do anything for him even though her introduced her to alcohol and occasionally said negative jokes about her appearance. Nina got Damion an internship at her father’s business and introduced him to her family, only to find out that Damion was using her to get secrets of her father’s business and feed it into a rival company. When Damion gets what he needs, he breaks up with Nina and gets back together with his ex, completely breaking Nina’s heart. And although, Damion got what he wanted, he wanted to defeat Nina and her reputation, so he leaked some of the nudes that he had taken of her when they were a couple. She becomes the butt of everyone’s joke that it pushes her do far over the edge that she punches a former friend, breaking her nose. That friend was also the daughter of a CEO of the rivaling company that stole Nina's father's secrets.

The scandal drives a wedge between the teen and her parents, them scolding her for how naive she was, and tainting their name in the public. Tired of the humiliation and the blame, Nina decides on her own to go down to America and live with her beloved paternal aunt, Viola Pelletier, on Rotherham’s Island in the middle of her junior year. The transition is strange to Nina because she has only lived in the sheltered life her mother and father provided her, but Nina believed that it was time for her to finally become her own person. She of course makes it her goal to never let someone get close to her as Damion did and to jus survive the last year and a half of her high school career. Her aunt finds out about her alcohol abuse and helps her get over it by sending her to an art teacher that focuses on using pain to speak in their art. Nina has gotten over her problem with binge drinking, easily being able to stop herself from losing control. She is still trying to learn how to adapt to an environment of kids that range from different forms of life. After settling in more Nina has been able to make some friends and define a place for herself among the citizens of Rotherham’s Island. She basically calls it home now. At the start of the story, she's been in Rotherham's Island for a year and a half.

History with Ashley: Nina met Ashley when she first moved to Rotherham’s Island. Nina’s aunt didn’t want her to dwell on her past mistakes and isolate herself from other teenagers, so she pushed her niece to meet the girl next door. Nina recognized Ashley from when she would visit her aunt on the island before, yet she had never pushed herself to actually talk to her, but to appease her grandmother she talked to Ashley.

At first, Nina wouldn’t open up to Ashley because of her new reluctancy to trust others, but when Nina noticed how kind and genuine Ashley was, she decided to give her new neighbor a chance. Ashley got Nina to spend more time outdoors by taking her on hikes and picnics while Nina got her to spend more time in the kitchen by baking and cooking up new foods for them to try together. Nina considered Ashley her first friend on the island and her death devastated her.

It was a big interruption in her life and Nina began isolating herself, even from the other friends that she had made in the past year. Nina kept denying it, denying everything that everyone else was saying, especially when she noticed Ashley’s change of behavior the few weeks before her death. Although her past behavior was alarming, Ashley looked okay when Nina saw her last before the senior party. And the devastated girl keeps rewinding her last moments with Ashley while staring at a portrait of her friend that sits on her bedroom wall, a wine bottle sitting next to her.

☔Nina loves to draw people in her life. She has drawn a portrait of her aunt reading in the parlor, of her parents looking at each other lovingly, of Ashley during one of their picnics, and of many more different citizens of the Island and back at home.

☔Nina can speak French, Arabic, and English. Obviously English is her best, and she speaks better Arabic than French

☔Nina participates in gymnastics, softball, and track.

ana belmonte.

appearance:

curly brunette
tanned skin
copper eyes
5'4''
106 lbs

distinguishing features:

- wild, curly hair
- thick eyebrows
- sprinkling of freckles on nose

wardrobe:

- ana's wardrobe can be viewed here. ana tends to wear more modest, well-tailored jackets with a long pant. she can also be found sporting a neutral blouse or a simple belt. ana strays away from vibrant colours that would draw too much attention to her figure. both ana and her parents prefer her to wear clothing with plenty of coverage that also exemplifies her wealth and status.

faceclaim:

- mina el hammani

personality.

ana tends to be more reserved in public settings and keeps to herself. she comes off as cold because she isn't one for idle prater. she works as effectively and quickly as possible, whether that be in a professional or personal discussion, and she isn't afraid to give you the truth (whether it comes off as hurtful or not). it is very important for ana to carefully plan and prepare for any situation- she is not spontaneous. it is difficult for ana to be close and warm to others because she is so closed off, including her parents. ana prefers to spend her time alone and busy, completely in control of her surroundings.

+traits.

punctual, methodical, systematic, truthful, self-disciplined, persistent

-traits.

controlling, manipulative, impatient, inconsiderate, selfish, insecure

likes.

working by candlelight, busy work, late-night beach walks

dislikes.

unnecessary drama, overly talkative people,

fears.

ana is most scared of disappointing her parents. she hardly ever disobeys a superior, let alone her own mother and father. her father has high expectations of her to leave rotherham and travel inland for university- preferably yale. her mother chooses not to defy her husband and stays down. whether it be her mother or father, she does not have a close relationship with either, yet she still fears disobeying them both to live a life of disappointment.

habits.

ana tends to pull on little curls of her hair or bite the insides of her cheeks. she also tends to tap on her workspaces repetitively to sooth herself when she feels overwhelmed.

ailments.

obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)

biography

ana was born in spain but her family moved soon after to rotherham to enjoy the sun and sand. her father, a wealthy business owner, frequently travels between the inland states and spain for meetings and such, and inviting affluent guests to lavish game nights and get-togethers on the weekends. her mother keeps to herself at home, though she enjoys frequenting the botanical gardens with her friends. the Belmontes reside in a spanish-style villa along the eastern shoreline of rotherham.

growing up, ana was far more distant and reserved as the new girl in elementary school, though she became to be associated with her classmates of similar high social status per her father's request. ana hardly spent time with people from the other side of the island, and therefore grew accustomed to these types of people and blind to those with little income. she obeyed and respected her parents' wishes, no matter how much she disagreed. during her high school years, she did not sneak out to party or join the weekend bonfires. ana preferred to coop herself up at home and study. academics are the most important thing for her parents, and they constantly reminded her of her grades to get her into yale.

relationship with ashley

ana was close to Ashley when they were young, studying together at the elementary and middle island schools. when it came to freshman year, however, the two grew apart- as all growing teens do. they grow and change, and make new friend groups. this was unusual for ashley and ana. ana's parents had approved of ashley and her social standing, and ana's father had a relationship with ashley's father in business and in friendship. ana and ashley didn't just grow apart- they despised each other. ana's parents, specifically her father, had forbidden her from ever going out to party or join other students at nighttime bonfires. an argument at the beginning of freshman year broke loose. ashley would accuse ana of being too uptight, being too afraid to let loose and have a little fun. ana would ridicule ashley for not caring about her schoolwork and being too reckless- careless, even. Just to get her off of her back, ana agreed to join ashley at a bonfire but was caught trying to sneak back into her bedroom window in the early morning the next day. her father was furious and banned her from having contact with ashley ever again. since then, ana was furious for letting ashley convince her to defy her parents and told herself that she would never let it happen again.

the news of ashley's death shook Ana from deep within. the friendship and love that ana had for ashley resurfaced, and she found herself regretful for they were she had ignored ashley since freshman year. Now, it was the end of her junior year. ana had spent two years turning away from ashley in the halls, casting her icy glares, and occasionally passing around comments about ashley's disregard for responsibility.
