Palladium RPG - Reworking the Xp System

For my part, speaking of that game, I'm actually thinking I'm going to award based on milestones. For instance, this large engagement/combat, I think you guys are going to AT LEAST jump a level. But it doesn't have to be combat. I take the AW-style of things. So, I plan on highlight changes in...

    Mecha game system?

Good point. I’ve always loved the Veritechs. I have the Macross 2 books, as well. Perhaps I’ll run a straight up Robotech game. Thanks!

    Mecha game system?

I saw that they lost the license. Pretty funny, actually. Glad I have all the books already. Good to hear it’s actually a bit better. I’ve only played 2e the one time in your game. Perhaps that’s a decent option.

Perhaps @Sherwood might have some helpful thoughts.

    Mecha game system?

I have a weird problem. I'm hoping you guys will have some ideas or feedback. I really want to run—as in GM/ST/MC—a mecha game. I'm talking giant piloted machines with plenty of anime-style melodrama. The trouble I'm having is what system to use. I feel limited to what systems/rulesets people...

    Other Apocalypse World system

You're totally right. And it is a certain style of play. Very story/character-based. It fits really well into PBP. My friends and I have played enough AW that we usually change the “setting” away from traditional apocalypse. One game that is still going on was a game about a colony ship in...

    Other Apocalypse World system

Yep. It’s my favorite. I’ve played the game many times in person and here. I also use it and it’s principles in other games that I run. To me, it and Burning Wheel were the start to the next evolution of tabletop RPG. They have very opinionated ways of playing tabletop RPGs. Many, many games...

    Other Third person or non-descriptive?

Depends: General RP and traditional dice games, I go with third-person, present, I guess? Yeah. I guess I do. Newer indie story games like Apocalypse World, I speak in first-person directly to the character in first-person. It's very conversational and I ask direct questions with that character.

Other My Different thought on Character Backgrounds

Yeah, and I want to add that there really is no wrong way to play...except for going against the agreed upon social contract. If everyone agrees to have some or a bunch of backstory written out, it's really only disrupting the game to not do the same. Don't compare yourself. Talk to the GM/ST/MC...

Other My Different thought on Character Backgrounds

I disagree, sort of. Though, I’m also not a standard free-form player or dice player. I believe strongly emergent play and “play to find out”. Most of my experience comes from the table, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I personally do the same. If I’m required to write a background...

Can you define both? I don’t know what you mean by ‘non-descriptive’.

Advice/Help Toe in the Freeform ocean

Makes sense. I think that's what I'm trying to avoid. I haven't really done freeform myself formally and I'm not sure what the typical rules are other than not taking control of other people's characters. There's a social contract that I haven't tuned into yet. But your'e right. Everyone here is...

Advice/Help Toe in the Freeform ocean

I'm considering running my first freeform RP. I'm a long-time dice player/GM, but I'd like to try it out. Does anyone have a good set of "rules" I can steal? You know the ones: "No god-moding, respect each other," etc. I'd rather not reinvent the wheel. Also, any advice or tips?

    Seeking advice on GMing

Yes! Exactly. Though, as with everything there are exceptions. Burning Wheel has a conflict resolution system rather than task, but it uses skills and attributes that can be used for any conflict and the conflicts aren't pre-defined. But a rare exception.

    Seeking advice on GMing

I have always run games on the fly. For better and worse. It's just something I've always been passionate about. With that said, I do it better than I did as a teenager. Then it was out of sheer laziness. Now, I get a lot of joy out of the discovery and emergent play that happens. But, like...

    Seeking advice on GMing

Of course. I really like the way you play in Tales of the REF. I'm happy to chat. Right. These games, as with many newer RPGs, use conflict resolution rather than task resolution. D&D and games like it use task resolution. Example: I swing my sword, Do I hit? Or: I pick the lock. Do I...

    Seeking advice on GMing

@Grey tagged me when he mentioned Dungeon World and Apocalypse World. You rang? I have some thoughts. I'll try to keep them short. And hopefully useful. You can ask me to expand if you're interested. First, Dungeon World. Like its parent game Apocalypse World, there is one specific way to...

    Potential ST/GM/DM Advice

I'm no expert. I've played a lot of games over the years—at the table and online. I've made a lot of mistakes. And I'm not an amazing writer, either. But, I recently had a conversation with someone here about gaming advice. At the end, they asked if I could give one piece of advice to...
