A good sequel can subvert that though. For example, by making the stakes something other than the continuation of the main character

I guess, but typically they try introducing new characters to do that as they don't want to kill the old ones, but by the time the big event happens, noone really cares too much about them yet

yeah, that is typically true. But if you think about it. so are most original things too. The materialistic mentalities are often in the driver seat these days.

It really depends. Original things execute well as they have new characters with no reference to past characters, so we have no idea what could happen next, but at the same time it could be executed poorly in some manner

you have no idea what could happen next IF the author is clever enough not to give it away, and applying the same common sense that says a main character in a sequel is unlikely to die, we could deduce a main character anywhere is unlikely to die.
Noble Scion

not necessarily. protaganists in original universes can die at any moment, but the instant it become a sequel the chances are they are going to want to make more sequels
Idea

that is quite wrong. After all, the main characters are always the characters the story revolves around and who the audience connects with the most, supposedly. So both in the traditional and financial driven narratives the protagonist is unlikely to die.
Noble Scion

unlikely. Which is why I said not necessarily. Also the point isn't wrong. Main characters have died before xP

main characters in sequels have also died before. The conversation was about expectations
