Use of food is a good motivator for cats

He's already fat, so that's no good. He's just shy and moves at his own pace so

Fat cats love food, teach him to sit on your lap and you give him a treat

I don't want to further his obesity. He scarfs down food even when he isn't hungry. He's happy with being pet and talked to

Haha how do you expect to train him then? Only other method I can think of is giving him a really good petting when he sits on your lap then, you gotta make him melt

I'm not trying to train him as much as I want to make him comfortable being close to humans. Plus my lap isn't that comfortable, he was stumbling around and digging his claws into my legs.
