Nuclear control is always fun.

I was thinking I'd have a character who's main ability would seem not all that useful or just stupid, but could have serious benefits. Like one I really like right now is something I'm calling "Click" for now. Basically, they would have the ability to instantly unlock or lock any lock with a single touch. Later it'll probably extend to them being able to start anything that needs a key to start, like a car or elevator, or even go as far as being able to unlock computer terminals and similar password protected things.

Why unlock things when you can unlock concepts? Just jimmy unlock 'the limits of human potential'

I like the way you think.

I prefer the lockpicking. Human potential unlocking is a rather silly and open ended ability. It has the potential to be OP if abused too. I mean how do you even decide how that works? You'd basically have Doctor Manhattan combined with Superman. It can easily slip into a "I can do virtually anything I can imagine, because I have no limitations, and any I find, I just unlock" sort of situation. It almost reminds me of a character from Heroes who had a really interesting, fresh ability. Gabriel Gray had intuitive aptitude, allowing him to understand how anything worked just by examining it. Using that power, he learned how to take the abilities of others by going inside their skull to toy with their brain and extract whatever it is he does, lol. The catch was the lust for more understanding and power. The intuitive aptitude drove him insane, it was never enough, he always had to have more.

You could almost invent your own superpower here that is a branch of telekinesis and intuitive aptitude. You can look at complex mechanical systems and understand how the fundamental parts work, and then manipulate them. So you could figure a lock out in a matter of a second, and open it immediately after. Perhaps it only works on non-organic compounds of a working system, such as a lock, watch, car, anything with working mechanical parts. Which means to move a stone in the desert won't work too well, or to push a human being is impossible, lifting stuff requires a lot of energy and isn't effective enough to waste said energy.

We should start a superhero think tank and come up with fresh powers. When we have a good power or set of powers, we can play with characters to match up with them.

Honestly bro I just saw my brother and I was talking about his with him, we had a nice convo about how fresh and awesome that ability is. Sure it may be used in token opened magic or abilities constantly, but never that developed and specific, or as a central power, instead of a minor plot device.

Purely spitballing here, you know how I am:

This could be a sub-form of Technokinesis, the ability to control machines with only the mind. Similar to Technopathy, but more powerful in ways, especially physical. A Technopath can't remove the magazine from every gun in a 100 foot radius or more, they can't flick the safety off, or force/jam it permanently off, and they don't have telekinetic abilities. A Technokinetic can do all that and more.

I thought a nice bonus for technopathy would be being able to manipulate coding and programming, while technokinetics can't so much, but they have nice addiional perks of their own.

It could be cool if your character's abilities evolve into this, and the lockpicking concept is simply how they begin to manifest before he or she really begins to master the core attributes of the powers, allowing them to evolve their abilities, similar to the way the I6 will.

That could actually be a really good and fun progression of a character's abilities. Which wound actually be great for the character as I had in mind since the character pretty much thinks that they're pretty useless compared to the rest of the gifted members in his community. Like one person can control the elements, one can control electricity and magnetism, one gets more powerful the higher they are, and here he is, opening locks for people for $15 a lock.

OH I forgot, while talking we bounced a few character shells for the ability back and forth, thinking realistically if we had that ability in our lives, how would it effect it; like would my entire lifestyle and career choice be geared around it? We entertained that first.

Average criminal who gets by only to take care of himself and/or loved ones. Little stuff like B&Es, car jacking. Now if you wanted a character who was more protagonist than that, he could choose to only hit businesses, not home or property of citizens and family.

Full-blown, Jesse James, safe cracking bank robber. The criminal who turns hero for some reason, I feel like a deep, emotion personal story and prison time should be involved. Perhaps a job goes horribly wrong and a partner kills a security guard. While making a frantic escape, the idiot wheel man hits a little girl crossing the street and kills her. Your character bails on his crew, and turns himself in immediately. He remains silent and does his time, no deals, no mercy. He gets out 15 years later, lets say he went in at 19, comes out 34, still a young man, but hardened. From there it gets harder to weave it, but you can spin something up, perhaps he had a newborn when he went in.

Simple locksmith, lol.

The guy who comes when you locked your keys in your car. lol

Cop, firefighter military, some form of service where your skill could save lives or help people.

Those are some ideas provided you want his power to heavily influence his life pre-hero stages.

Yeah, I planned on having him be a simple locksmith who feels like he got the raw end of the deal in terms of everyone around him spontaneously getting cool life changing abilities. The only problem is that he took his strange ability at face value and never thought of trying to actually practice using it for more than just his job and figure out what his true potential was..

I love the idea of the bank robber because as soon as some snotty hero like Owen get slippy with him about his past you drop the fact he spent 15 years living with animals in prison when he probably could have escaped the first night because he knew that's where he belonged, it's like damn... -.- made respect bro...

I'd probably go for the prison one if the RP I was thinking up abilities for was more serious.

lol Windsock. What do you think, though?

You should do prison 1 in GLU, I would love to play a supporting role or 2 in his solo RP.

I'd like to play the wheel man you might come for if he got off all that time. lol
