I've found myself preferring to let it be revealed in the RP unless the characters know each other; such as childhood friends and such.

I do both. I do vague bullet points in a CS, and then elaborate as the RP unfolds.

Both of those work well. I can remember only once when I did a good history in the CS. I was inspired, it never happened again.

Why not both? It's not like if you do one you cannot do the other.   In my mind the CS is meant to be an overall description while in character you go into greater detail about the history mentioned in the CS. For example, in the CS you said your person had a rough childhood but in the RP you comment that it wasn't uncommon for you to eat only once a day even though both of your parents worked double shifts all the time.  I also consider CS histories to be a good starting point or cheat sheet, I mean if you are in 10 RPs all at the same time then you need something to remind you of your character so that you don't flip their story on it's head every few posts.

It never worked for me except once. A lot of things change for my characters over time so I'll leave the history alone that way I don't have to keep going back to make changes.
Viper
Viper
Well of course it didn't work, you kept changing major things about your characters background!  If you stick to the overall gist of it then it works great for you and those you are role playing with.
I
Inner Power
lol it didn't work because like I said I enjoy writing my character's history through the roleplay. It flows better for me. If I were to fill out a whole history in a CS, what if something changes for me? I'd have to go back and adjust the sheet and that's why I tell the tale of my character through roleplay.

Everyone has their own particular way of how they do character sheets, I wanted to see what they do.

It's cool what works for you but that's you :) We all have our own methods of how we do things, there's no right or wrong way.

I prefer in RP. Of course, doing so takes a lot of planning and dedication. I can see why a CS is appealing, though. But if I had one, I'd always be tempted to change it...

I do agree with that, you do you! As long as it does not go against the Gm's wishes then there is no problems really. I wasn't trying trying to say that you were wrong at all, sorry if it came off like that.  ^_^

@Viper

Lmao, I don't do group roleplays!  No worries :)

Hmm, I'm curious and tempted to ask you for an RP @Inner Power -scuttles back into her corner-

This was interesting. Thank you for all of your feedback everyone.

@Fyuri

You are curious about me? We can talk but I can't guarantee I'm the roleplayer you are looking for but never hurts to talk roleplay.

@Inner Power That's why I scuttled.  I think the only thing I've read is from a status update of yours saying you liked fantasy.

Genres I like:

Fantasy

Medieval

Modern

Modern Fantasy

Science Fiction

Some fandoms, original characters only.

I don't mind romance I just would like it to be a side plot.

I enjoy action and adventure.

I play female and male, side, minor, and multiple characters depending on the setting.

I'm a slow poster. Rapid posting will never be something I do because I write multiple paragraphs so it takes me time. I like to give my partners something good.

Sounds like we like the same types of genre.  I mostly do romance RPs, but I can do that as more of a side thing (as in letting it develop on its own in the RP) as well.  I don't really mind slow posting, but... are you insanely detailed?  I can do some long posts, but I dislike "floofing" with too much detail.

@King of Strong Style Oh ho ho? -latches onto your leg- RP?!

I've never been in a good Romance RP. I have zero Romance experience :D

It doesn't have to be a main thing. :P   You're talking to a DnD-er here.
