I usually prefer a style that is between anime and realistic. But I did practice some shadowing with the realistic face.


So my drawing is usually eyes, a curve from the eye socket to the nose, and then the mouth emphasis in the centre shadow and the corners.


I remember someone or some book taught me the eyes can have exactly one eye distance in between, but it can vary of course.


I like making the character have hair on their face so they can cover up some flaws XD

Yeah... I know what you mean. Noses and hair are... okay for me. Eyes can be hit and miss.


But usually, it's the mouth that ends up being wrong for me! I draw and draw and draw the mouth, and it still looks off. 


Or too much "skull" ends up showing because the hairline is somehow off. 

@Osthavula Oh really? That's interesting! I think my problem is either the lips, the cheekbones, or the general face width/height.

if i knew the answer to that question, i wouldn't be the world's worst artist... but yeah, i'm better at coloring and shading than non-stylized anatomy. it's one of the reasons all my characters have emo hair that covers half their face, honestly ;-;

Yeah. Head shape plays a big roll. I wish there was a tip I could give, but if I knew a tip, I'd use it myself! XD

I like drawing hair. Emphasis on the hair end and the major line of how it flows, and then fill in the shadows. Even for realistic drawing it shouldn't be like you draw out every solid line of it. For the hairline I like to just draw short strokes and then add to it if the shape is not right. (ultimatly, just give bangs)


I started knowing the lips structure from yamato nadeshiko manga because when I practised its drawing, she did have a couple of lips drawing that is interesting. I noticed how the upper lips thin and have a straighter line when a person smile, and how biting of the lips sort of looks like (covering the lower lip. combining with the smile is pretty nice) . I usually draw a line of where the mouth open(or close), draw the cupid bow, and shadow under the lower lip, and then fill in the colour.

Hmm. Sounds about the same as possession to me. You need a hand with that? I know how to fix it. Though... it requires you getting impaled in the chest with a spear. And dying. And being resurrected. Oh, and it's not fool proof.
