It depends entirely on what the subject of the manga is about. Also is it tagged as nonficition or just put in a similar section of the library? As it could also just be a space issue as well.

Not all libraries have the space to dedicate to a specific section for graphic novels or comics so they might concievably assimilate them into the greater collection.

Now how books are catalogued is in two groups - Author for fiction / Subject for non-fiction.

Well in my school library, there's a series of shelves for nonfiction, and smack dab in the middle is the section where the manga is. On the spines are stickers with numbers in decimal form (ex. Pandora Hearts Volume 14 is 741.5) but also with the first three letters of the author's last name (ex. PH 14 has "MOC" under the number).

I was honestly really curious.

So it's possible that just because something is manga it might be non-fiction if it is a non-fiction or classical story. For instance we have graphic novels of classical stories like romeo and juliet , classic fairytales, etc. all labeled as Non-Fiction despite the fact that they are written in a manga format.

Now if the manga is more traditional such as Fruits Basket or the like - I'd say likely it's a space issue but without seeing your library I couldn't say for sure. You might ask the librarians themselves, I'm sure they'd be able to tell you.

That makes sense, thank you. I'm sure it's the space issue, since all sorts of genres of manga are there. Thank you! :)

In this case they've gone with the dewey decimal call number for I believe comics and graphic novels. That would be the 741.5 number. It is that classification in the dewey decimal system.

Not a problem. I'm work at a library myself so I'm always happy to answer questions related to them. :)
