Welcome to the Town of Somnia, the town of fake dreams and illusions!

Except you’re trapped now--and if you don’t want to die yet, then you better find a way to escape this place!

...But is there really a way?

Fortunately, you’ll have more time than you would think you have here. While in this realm, it seems as if you’re stuffing your stomach daily with delicious food and drinks, in real life you are barely intaking any food or liquid. What does that mean? It means that technically, realistically, you’re supposed to die within three weeks or less, you can even die in just a couple of days. However, what seems like a couple days passing by may merely be a few hours in real life. Basically, time has been prolonged here at this realm. You will not die as fast as you’d think.

Your characters probably won’t know that. But they’ll eventually find out just like they would find out the rest of the hints and puzzles that this town actually has--just hidden away.

Note that the roleplay will start with when they first arrived at the town. It will not start with when they discover that they’re trapped.

I did say this lore will provide more details. However, a lot of the things I want to say, I want to reveal it slowly through the roleplay, so I’ll just say a couple of major points here, and probably give the setting more description.

However, please beware of these warnings:

The roleplay will potentially include some gory contents! If you’re completely against gore, the roleplay may not necessarily suit you.
There can potentially be monsters down the road. What type of monsters? We’ll see. But they won’t be fantastical dragons or magical beasts, they’re ugly, demonic-monsters that you probably won’t want exist. (That is why I include action as a tag in the roleplay. It is still optional, however, depending on how the roleplay goes.

Okay now, about the roleplay:

TOWN OF SOMNIA : CURSE OF THE WILL O' WISP

(Image Original Source: From children’s book “The Poupelle of Chimney Town by Nishino Hiroaki, forgive me for using this art piece for a fantasy horror roleplay.)

A long time ago, a legend exists among villagers and townspeople alike about a town that lures people in and swallows their souls. The town itself is a huge, unknown magical entity that seems to have its own mind and soul. It creates an illusion of a beautiful, perfect place to live in and tricks weak-minded people into staying there forever, letting them have a happy dream while draining their energy in real life, which eventually kills them. The town then consumes the souls to keep itself alive, and the pattern continues.

Nobody knows how this town comes to existence in the first place. But many say that it is the Curse of the Will O’ Wisp, the flames of the dead that symbolizes unattainable goal, hopes in vain. How the WIll O’ Wisp’s gain its powers or lead to this town’s existence remains unknown.

People in the past often used this legend to explain mysterious disappearances of people all around. However, around a few decades ago, this legend seems to be heard by others less and less. Probably because there was a decrease in the number of disappearances, or people just never knew how the legend even existed in the first place to bother continuing it to the next generation, or something else happened. Anyway, the legend became less well-known, until it is practically unheard anymore by today.

Until now, you have fallen victim to this ancient legend.

Your characters have the option of knowing this legend or not.

What Exactly is the Town Like? How to live here?

What’s the liveliest town you can imagine in a medieval fantasy world? Whatever appears in your head, that’s probably it. It has everything a town has. I will create a map but that’s way too complex. It’s a great town with great fun and great food and great people and you have enough money to live here forever, just know that.

Treat hanging around in the town like you’d in a lively town roleplay, basically.

When you wake up, there’ll be a bag of golden coins placed on the counter next to your bed, given to you by the mysterious lady in red. You can use the money however you like.

You can try to find a job in town, work in bakeries, bars, help different shopkeepers, be a part of the tailor shop, etc etc. (Not sure if you’ll still be in the mood for that after you realize you’re trapped in this town to die but the option’s still there.) The townspeople will all welcome you dearly.

Note that there is also a grand theater in town in the far west side of town if you’re ever up for a show!

The Townspeople

Everything may seem normal about them at first. They’re just regular townspeople, from shopkeepers, sellers, performers, to adults and children and pets and much more. They live their life, cheerfully chatting with you, advertising to you and performing. Children apologize when they bump into you or stick out their tongue.

However, if you look a little more deeply at them, you’ll start to feel like something is wrong. Conversations with them don’t seem to last long, you feel like they’re just staged, placed there for your convenience. There are some questions that they won’t seem to be able to answer. When asked, they respond unnaturally, staring into the air--or even at you--for a brief moment in the blankest expression. Then they would suddenly smile again, mouth stretched from tip to tip, and the conversation will lead straight back to how you’re going to spend the night, the first question he or she asked when you first approached the person.

At least, you realized that the way they act so natural...Has become rather unnatural.

Like dolls, like actors. Who are they really? Are they real in the first place?

THE HOTEL

When you first enter the hotel, the mysterious lady will give you a key.

I’ll be assigning each of you a room number, please beware of it because different room may have different hints.

The Staff

Counter Desk Lady - The One and Only

Enter through the double doors, and directly in front of you will be the counter desk, gold in color, reflecting the light of the chandelier. Behind the counter, a lady stands, smiling at you.

She never seems to sit and she’ll always be there like she never rests.

If you ask, she’ll just say “Oh, I sure do rest. You just never see it. Thank you for concerning.”

The counter lady will ask you any questions in regard of the hotel, the locations of each place inside the hotel, as well as any questions you have regarding the town. Well, certainly not everything. But any questions that’ll make you happier in this town, she’ll surely answer.

The Security Guards

There are several security guards standing about in the hotel, randomly wandering about in typical security guard uniform. If people in the hotel break into a fight, the guards will enter and yell it off. As all hotel guards do, they keep you and the hotel safe, and probably play a role in keeping the realm safe too.

The Janitors/Smaller Staffs/Other Hotel staffs

Do they even exist? You rarely see them. Your place just always seem to be clean by magic. But wait--oh, there’s one! Hello! Hello? Can you hear me? What the hell, now they’re gone. Right, ask for hotel service--the counter lady would pick up and finally, a staff will knock on your door. But they never seem to talk--they do smile at you, though. If you ask them questions, they’ll just show you a baffled expression or shake their heads.

The Chefs and the Waiter/Waitresses

You never see the chefs. They’ll forever be by the kitchen. But you do see the waiter/waitresses often when they deliver food over to your table and pour your drinks. They are the only people who seem very much alive aside from the counter lady, if not look a lot more livelier. They like to chat you up, welcome you to the hotel while providing great food and service. Their favorite questions will probably be “How you’re enjoying your stay so far?”

The Mysterious Lady In Red

Aside from the first time when she led you to the hotel, you’d never seen her again. When will she appear again? Or is the only option left for you to find her instead? Who is she to start with? So many questions.

----*----

The counter lady will answer where everything in the hotel is, but for the roleplay setting’s sake, let’s make it easier by simply telling you what locations are in this hotel:

The hotel is divided into five floors. Strangely enough, it seems like only you guys who are mysteriously brought here by a little blue ball of flame live in this hotel, and occupying only the first three floors.

Enter the lobby, and directly ahead of you led by the long red carpet is the counter desk and the front lady. By two sides of her, each some feet away, will be the half-spiral staircase that leads up to the second floor open hallway, where you can stand by the edge and glance down below to the first floor lobby.

First Floor

The Lobby

Where the counter desk lady is.

Dining Room

Enter through the left double doors on the right side of the lobby, and you’d find the dining room. Inside the dining room, you’d find, obviously, lots of tables, all round with clean, white table covers. There are different sizes of tables, the largest one seems to be able to hold more than ten people per table.

There is a long, rectangular table filled with various food on top, from meat to vegetables to fruits to noodles and rice to even desserts and cakes and a huge chocolate fountain in the middle.

There is a big, elegant clear glass shelf filled with all kinds of beverages from juice to alcohol, a water fountain at the left side of it signals that you can drink regular water if you want too.

On the top right of the room is a single wooden door with a sign saying “Kitchen - Employees Only”

Library/Reading Room

The right side of the hotel, includes shelves and shelves of books and other types of literature. It ranges from nonfiction history to fictional romance and fantasy fairy tales. There seems to be no books on the town itself…? Or you’re just not looking hard enough…?

There is a big space at the far end that has multiple desks, couches, chairs, for you to chill there and read.

A sign by the entrance says “Stay quiet, no food or drink allowed.”

Somehow a guard will always be there to yell at you if you ever want to bring food in.

The Elevator

Right behind the left and right half-spiral staircase are the elevators for your access. They are designed by artful patterns, gold and black squares with the four logos of playing cards painted randomly int each square.

Second Floor

Take the staircase up, and when the doors open you’ll find yourself facing the wall across from you of the hallway. On the wall, a sign has the following information:

← Room 201-225
Room 226-250 →

Gaming Room →
Note: At the very very end

Inside the Gaming Room, you have a pool table, a ping-pong table, some chess tables, a shelf filled with playing cards, board games, more books, and a phonograph

Third Floor

Again, a sign hangs on the wall directly facing you:

← Room 301-325

Room 326-350 →

On both floors, on both ends of the hallways are a set of clear double doors that lead you to a huge balcony for you to enjoy the cool breezes and chill.

There is both a front garden and a back garden, both adorned with all kinds of flowers. The front has a huge water fountain, the back has a deep well on the very top edge.

(Possibly more will be added.)

HOW THE ROLEPLAY WORKS:

Spoiler alert, but escaping this place probably has something to do with your problems in real life and growing enough mentality to confront it, eh? To get the courage to break through your obstacles, to be free from your nightmares and be willing to face the real world again with determined eyes--yes, the good old concepts, but before that.

HINTS AND PUZZLES

How to get out of this place? All escaping stories start by learning about the place you’re in. If you dig hard enough, you’ll find clues.

For example, let’s start by a diary entry under XXX room’s bed.

That painting hanging by the wall, there’s something suspicious about it...But what is it?

Clues, clues, who is that little girl running down the hall? Oh, what’s this tiny piece of paper doing here--something’s written on it?

(If you’ve ever played a horror RPG game before like Ib’s, Witch’s House, Crooked Man, imagine it a bit in that style.)

As the creator/admin of this roleplay, while I’ll be playing a character myself, I’ll also serve as a narrator for this story. When characters discover a clue, what the clue says will be described in a story-telling fashion by me, who will make it clear when I’m roleplaying or when I’m simply acting as a narrator.

By the way, I won’t be playing the mysterious lady or something, I’ll simply be another one trapped inside this town, just letting you know.

Also, it’ll be important to read every character’s response, especially mine, as well as every narration. You’ll kind of figure out why eventually.

Why is this world slightly imperfect? Why are there hints or clues about this place--or even about escaping this place--left behind? Had someone realized this place is a trap before you came? What happened to them? Well, you’ll see.

However, note that this roleplay can go in any direction you want, you don’t necessarily have to go discover hints or clues just because it exists. You guys can even make up your way to exit this realm for the sake of building the story for the plot. I include hints/puzzles just as my way of continuing the roleplay with my story idea, just like you guys can have yours. Don’t worry, if there are necessary details/plots I definitely want to add to the roleplay, I’ll find ways to add it and combine it with your ideas.

So please, build the story with me, throw in your ideas and use your creativity and imagination. Let’s make this roleplay wild!

If you’re ever gonna go:.

“For hell’s sake, damn these clues! I’m going to straight ahead find the mysterious lady and force her to appear by burning the whole town and killing everyone!!!”---or various other examples of what you want to do in this roleplay--like “eh I’ll just stay here and die”--you certainly can choose to do anything you want. We will roleplay accordingly. Just know you can’t escape by burning the town.

Basically, what I’m providing is merely a setting. Your characters are in this setting, and what they choose to do is up to them. The town will react according to their action because the town is in a sense, alive. If you get what I mean.

YOUR CHARACTERS

You are depressed, hopeless, seeking an escape from reality, that’s how you get trapped into this world because the town exactly take your weak mentality to its advantage. That doesn’t mean you’re powerless as a character alone just because you fell into a trap. Let me establish again that this roleplay takes place in a medieval fantasy setting, that means your characters can either be humans or not, has magical abilities/superpower abilities or not. I’m not going to place too much limit on your characters. Just don’t have a “Power to break through all types of curses no matter how powerful they are” type of ability cause that’s a no-no, let’s not go that far, alright?

But any type of power is fine as not as it is not overpowering or godmodding.

When you enter a hotel, you’ll be assigned a room number, you will stay in that room. Don’t worry, I won’t set you awfully far away from the other members in this hotel.

Through this roleplay, your character will not only be escaping, but will be forced to confront the problems they face and grow the courage to return to reality. A bit of a spoiler alert but cliche enough, the town’s dark magic will use whatever ways to make your character hesitate to return to the real world. It’ll make you want to stay in this world as long as possible.

But together with other characters, through each interaction, maybe bubbling some other types of feelings here or there other than plain friendship or frienemies or enemies (*wink wink* *coughs*) or not, I’m hoping your characters can undergo character developments. Again cliche spoiler alert, but learning to confront your problems is definitely a big way to help you get outta this realm.

Unless your character just doesn’t want to and simply want to die I mean that’s fine too.

Oh, since we’re on that, can characters die in this roleplay?

If you mean during their course of escaping, eh, sure, it’s possible.

How? I’m not going to reveal that yet.

Whether you want them to die is up to you.

(I don’t think you want to kill them though? Unless you want to? Well, it’s up to you too.)

THE RULES
(Of course let’s not forget the rules.)
1. Follow all RPNation guidelines.
2. All replies must be in proper grammar (to the best of your abilities) in proper sentences. Preferably, each reply should be minimum 2 paragraphs long (personally I like 3/3+ paragraphs long), 3. but in the case of too little to write about, a fine single paragraph is fine. Each paragraph should be a nice 5-8 complete sentences.
3. I won’t force you to reply fast, but let’s each reply at least once a week. I like it faster, but we all have lives and so do I. Let me know in advance if you are going to be absent for awhile, or if you have to quit the roleplay for whatever reasons. I understand.
4. No godmoddling, no OP characters.
5. Do not be rude or offensive to other roleplayers, we are all trying to have fun here.
6. Not exactly like a rule, but feel free to discuss ideas or plots you want to throw into the roleplay, or ask me if you can add it in, or simply chat with other roleplayers, in the OOC thread.

What Else Did I Miss?

I probably miss a lot of things.

Please ask me if you have any questions, and whatever questions you have I’ll use it to figure
out what I should add to this lore.
