i think it would be a lot faster if we put “search members” in the drop down.

I agree! I get lost a lot of times and keep thinking "Well maybe they removed the feature," When I can't find it. It would be way faster and would be good for my bad memory if it were in the drop-down menu. >.<

What you can do in the meantime is go to the search box, and leave the top field empty. If you start typing in the bottom field, it'll show the list of site members just like you're tagging someone. Then when you find the member you want in that list, just hit search and you can go to their profile from there.
It's not the best solution by any means, since you need to already know at least the first few letters of the name you're looking for to find them, but it's worked for me so far.
