-West of Banback Vale-

At the mouth of the tunnel Kergan Banback dismounted as he had done so hundreds of times before. Phane was getting on in her years, her leg lost to the battle with the Great Crawler in his youth doing her no favors. Yet, the two of them continued on together, indeed as they must until he was to fall in battle. It was a fact that steadily wore on his mind in greater amounts as the years passed. When he had passed his final test as a youth, his position as the defending duelist had been no more than a dream. But now he has begun to hear whispers that his son may try to take the crown. Kergan said, “Let him try,” yet despite his certainty it needled at the back of his mind.

He shakes his head to clear the thought, and gives Phane a soft pat to her side. There will be time to dwell on such things later. Kergan tells her to remain here with a few soft clicks and she happily settles to rest outside, pressed lightly against the wall of debris. In the future she will carry him down this path, he hopes, but for now the area is too unstable for her gait.

A few steps in he spots the crew assigned to begin the investigations into the rockslide. A small gathering stood peering into the gloom, only lit by the green flame torches they carry, a few steps before the newly emerged tunnel sweeps downward, steep and leading off to who knows where. They speak in quiet whispers but fall utterly silent at the sight of his approach, the large branching horns upon his head all the announcement of his title he needs, even in the poorly lit tunnel.

“Why has the scouting stopped here,” Kergan speaks plainly, not a question but a matter of demanding an answer to a fact. He had gotten the notice from the leader of the expedition, but the man had a tendency to soften the blow of failure at the cost of leaving out otherwise important details.

One of them, a woman with jagged spines running up her arms, steps forward with a small bow of her head. “It will be easier to explain if we douse the lights,” she seems to catch herself, hastily adding on, “With your permission?” Kergan gives her a nod, and one by one the green flames go out. Yet, the group is not bathed in darkness, rather, there is a soft glowing light coming from somewhere far, far down below.

They mumble amongst one another once again as Kergan considers the light in silence. It is only when he catches sound of one towards the back bringing up the name of The Ancient One does he lift a hand to silence them. “The Sacerdotes have not emerged in over a year. If this is a sign from The Ancient One it is one we must navigate ourselves. It will not be the first time in our history that we must trust in ourselves, nor will it be the last.”

Silence and grim faces in the dark, but even the most hopeful among them cannot deny such facts. Whatever happens, they must continue to forge the path. Kergan speaks, “Gather those mounts of strongest thread and have three riders investigate. One above and two below. If it is something we can bring up and into the light, then do so. We must learn if we are to continue to tread this path.”

With that he turns and heads back out of the fragile tunnel, the scouts left suddenly stumbling to see him off with the proper bow. Phane is waiting for him right where he left her, and as she uncurls with his approach it brings a small sense of relief to his heart.

“It’s Not Unknown…” Action 1: Lore. Research the strange glowing mushrooms found in the tunnels. Perhaps they can be safely cleared away or can be harvested for further use. (Lore +1.)

“If I’m Exploring It.” Action 2: Operations. Build. Begin to reinforce the main tunnel into the debris. It will be slow going, but a direct route to the winter outpost is too great an opportunity to pass up. (Operations +2.)

Aims: Create a safe route between the capital and their winter outpost.

The Archives
Turn 2

1715191020432.png

1715191101959.pngFailure. The turn of the century was marked by failure as a result of The Mother's hasty and singular thinking. "Disgraceful" The Crone's raspy voice scolded as she and The Maiden entered the council room in the palace, summoned to formulate the next steps of The Archives' plans.

The Crone entered with a scowl on her face, aimed at each and every person who'd been present during the last meeting. "Next time you propose meeting the council without us, remind me to laugh dear." Her tone was soft as if telling a joke, but as she walked pass her daughter she could she the grimace on her face, as if she'd been cut deep. "How many tutors did we lose?" She inquired as she slid into her seat and leaned her cane against the table.

"We are still waiting for confirmation, but we suspect...all that were sent are now dead." The Congress' Representative explained briefly.

A heavy sigh left The Crone's lips and she found herself shaking her head in disappointment, yet again. "And the university has yet to perfect the sending spell."

There was no shortage of bad news it seemed, a bad omen of how the rest of the season might turn out.

"Very well. Have the university continue their work with the spell. It will be paramount to avoiding future incidents like this one." The Crone instructed and although she'd only doubled down on what her daughter had ordered done, everyone seemed somewhat more confident in her. "And the Triumvirate will ensure this time that things succeed." She said with absolute certainty as she looked to her daughter and granddaughter.

"As for the Tutors, prepare their replacements and prepare to send them once we have discerned safe paths out of the library." The grandmother of The Archives knew what she would have to do, but could not share the information with those present. "Meeting adjourned." She concluded since no one seemed to have any objections. But as she grabbed her cane she paused and turned to the Mother.

"Perhaps you should focus on producing an heir rather than trying govern our people on your own my dear." The elderly woman dared to say before taking her leave.

Aim: Reach out to foreign realms and establish diplomatic ties.

Actions:
  1. Lore (+2): Magic - The Crone will use The Archives' forbidden knowledge to aid the University in continuing work on the Sending Spell.
  2. Operation(+1): Explore - The Crone will employ here covert agents to begin exploring the Library for whatever new threats might have taken out the Tutors.

What Secrets Lie Ahead

The 13th Regiment

Turn 2

High Commander Reginald Barkley once again stroked his metal goatee as he looked over The Kitchen. The construction of THE FORT as a part of their GRAND HOME BASE was well underway. In fact, it was going quite swimmingly if he was to say anything about the matter. Lieutenant Samuel Simmons was overseeing the construction and he had the utmost faith in the man. They say he could build a tank using only a paperclip, some wrapping paper and a pop rocket. Not that he had seen it done of course, but that was the ongoing rumor.

He took out his pipe and placed it in one hand as he looked over the latest reports on the expedition into THE BASEMENT. It also currently seemed to be going swimmingly. Quite. Sergeant Dominick Ganders was heading up that exploratory corps, having earned his place from his distinguished records of resource collection and combat against THE RATS in minor skirmishes.

He was indeed pleased with how the 13th Regiment was performing as the well oiled machine that they were supposed to be. And he had faith that they would continue to do so for the betterment of the cause.

Eventually after the current expedition and the construction of THE FORT, he would have to send an envoy to the North to their Magical Fire Allies. After all, they would much prefer THE FLAMES to be on their side and not cause them to be melted.

—-------------------------------------------------

Lieutenant Samuel Simmons was a short man. By which, it was clear that when he was a toy, his legs were broken off and then remelted back together to make him whole again. So while he can move just as well as his compatriots, he was a couple centimeters shorter than the others. But that had not stopped him on this expedition so far.

Private Dunbar approached him as they had made it down one of the steps via their rope and saluted.

“Sir, we’ve heard rats in the walls. The boys and I think that maybe some of the Lost Brigade might have been absconded with by the nasty devils. What say you?”

Part of their expedition was indeed to track down at least one of the Lost Brigades, but was it wise to traipse off the main trail on the words of whimsy on the off chance that they could stumble upon them and fight an unknown amount of rats in the process?

Simmons spoke up. “No Private. Even if there was a chance of some of The Lost Brigades being in the walls, I am not yet certain to head into the walls and face an unknown amount of combatants in the process for a possibility. No, we shall continue on the tried and true, heading down into the basement on our mission.

Now, tell the men that there will be a 10 minute break and then we shall continue on the next leg.”

—--------------------------------------------

Sergeant Dominick Ganders liked to build things. It was something that as soon as they had become alive that he seemed to have an innate desire to do. So when he was approached to be in charge of the construction of THE FORT, he was ecstatic. This was his chance to not only show the 13th Brigade his construction chops, but their ally and potential enemies as well.

THE FORT would be a testament to the strength of the 13th Regiment and help assist them in fighting and protecting the HOUSE, their home and fulfilling THE CURSE.

He was in the process of installing a new wooden crossbar when he was approached by one of the workers.

“Sir, the men and I have been hearing strange music coming from the waves and want to try to investigate it!”

The High Commander wouldn’t like any delays in the building of THE FORT and neither would he. Such a task would put them far behind schedule in its construction.

“No. I need each and every one of you helping to build this structure so we can stay on the schedule put forth by the High Commander. He is expecting this to be all finished by the end of the year at the latest.

If we have to fight, we need a Fort to have both a more defensible position and a place to ready weapons.”

The man looks dejected by the rejection of the investigation. As though all the wind was taken out of his sails.

“Yes sir. I’ll have the men go back to work.”

—---------------------------------------

Action 1; Continue delving deeper for the expedition into The Basement in order to search for one of The Lost Regiments. (Lowers the DC)

Action 2: Continue to Build the Fort on a higher location to the Western Portion of 13th Regiment Land so that it can look over the GRAND HOME BASE. (Spend 3 Resources upfront to make a very STRONG and POWERFUL fort. Spend an additional 1 Resource this turn to give a +1 bonus to the roll)

The Empire of the Emerald Scale
Turn 2

'Weep, but do not despair. Pray, but do not plead. Rejoice, but do not forget.

Weep, for you will never have Her love, but do not despair as a mewling babe denied their mother's teet. Pray for Her gaze, but do not plead for our suffering is nothing before Her. Rejoice for the life She gives, but do not forget that our lives exist only in service to Her."
- High Priestess Neraei Milsha

The throne room was large, as was only right, the ground smooth and carved stone with each panel showing the foundation and formation of their Great Empire. Of the toil and struggles of their ancestors. Pillars lined the room, each one with a great serpent curled around them both to represent how She Who Slithers surrounds their nation but also a reminder to all who came to this room that She was always there. Always watching. The roof was made of colored glass, painstakingly made with the colored stones {chalk} found within a small box. The light from the great Shed Window, of the light that came through the holes, illuminated the throne room in a dazzling display of colors, often appearing like mini-colored scales stretched out across the ground, walls and pillars. It was the only place suitable to house the Empress. At the end of the hall sat the throne, a large throne had two great serpent heads upon the armrest that manicured nails were tapping on with great impatience as the Empress Alalenai Ssustu listened to the report. Her tapping slowing or growing with her pleasure and displeasure.

The news about something 'shiny' under the wood was vague. It could be a trap, it could be nothing and worthless, as the messenger droned on, the Empress rolled it around in her head. Putting off the gathering of wood would slow down the gathering for the season, and if there was some sort of creature down there, protecting its hoard, or perhaps the hoard itself, she could even lose the workers which would hardly be that great of loss. As the woman weighed the decision in her mind, she found the potential gains to be worth the potential loss, "Send in some soldiers to secure the location and the workers in next to gather whatever it is and bring it to the surface so that it may be evaluated for its use to the Empire," Alalenai spoke, her voice was cold like the frosted glass of winter, but held all the strength of iron as it carried through the hall bringing the messenger to a sputtering stop.

"I-yes, Your Majesty, it shall be done," the messenger said as she took a small bow before rising again and flipping the page over to continue her report.

The next report caused the air in the throne room to grow cold, as the thin line of the Empresses lips became a small, cold smile, her eyes frosty as her nails gripped the serpent heads upon her throne. 'Do all agree'? There was no 'all'. There was only the Empress. Their foremen spoke with her voice, her architects and planners, spoke with her authority and they were daring to question? They feared some nonsensical curse more then they feared her? They dared to doubt her orders? The snake did not chase after the whispers of rats to separate whom was prey, it merely devoured them all.

The messenger was not immune to the shift of the mood as their knuckles were white upon the paper and her voice mumbled and broke at particularly dangerous lines, she kept the paper up, blocking her face, as if that would escape the icy glare of the Empress...

"Have I.. gone soft?" Alalenai said as she lifted one of her hands, turning it back and forth as if taking its measure, "Have I truly grown so lax in the last seasons that these males whose only job is to toil and obey have forgotten their place? Have I somehow made it seem like it was okay to question? To disobey? To undermine? Answer me."

"N-No! You're Majesty!" the messenger said as their terrified voice was followed by a loud clack as the scroll fell from her hands.

"And yet they still seek to do this? Well, something must be amiss, if I have not grown soft then there are simply some lowly workers that have forgotten their place, what should we do with them?" Alalenai said as she leaned back in her throne and slid one leg over the other.

"M-Me? Are you asking me, Your Majesty?" the messenger said, her eyes wide as she placed a palm on her chest to confirm. The Empress held her icy glare and gave a single nod.

"W-Well, you should investigate and fin-" her voice was cut short as the Empress raised a hand, "No, I think not."

"N-No, Your Majesty?" the messenger said as she gazed around the hall, at the guards lined up, their spears pointed to the roof as they stood ready.

"No. Investigate? They are mine. If your beast tries to bite your hand, you do not 'investigate'. You put it down. When a scale is damaged, it is plucked out. The other workers? They stood by as their fellows spread such rumors, as they spoke out against me.. How can a faithful subject simply stand by as their Empress is slandered in such a way? No, they are all damages scales suitable only to be plucked out.." Alalenai said as her hand gently plucked at thin air as if she was, even now, taking them apart.

"B-But-" the messenger started but caught herself as the icy glare of the Empress returned.

"Why are you so concerned? They're only males. They cannot bring life into this world. They are not blessed by She Who Slithers. They have a singular use and they are already failing to uphold that," the Empress rose from her throne and stepped towards the messenger, each step sending loud echoes through the hall as she leaned close to whisper into the messengers ear, "Sacrificing a hundred males to secure a thousand? Is it not a bargain deal?"

A shiver ran down the messengers spine as she nodded, "Y-Yes, Your Majesty."

"Good girl, now go and tell the High Priestess that I have need of her, she will be the instrument of my wrath.. Oh, and what is your name, my dear?" the empress said as she reached out to cup the messenger's chin, the nail of her thumb piercing her flesh as a bead of blood rolled down it to drip on the floor.

"Nadyia, Your Majesty," Nadyia whispered.

"Nadyia. Go, fetch the High Priestess, and serve the Empire."

Actions
1. Workers will descend into the hole in the floor to gather up whatever the shiny thing is! Some soldiers will be deployed to protect them as they unearth it. [Pursuing Secret] [Operations +2]

2. All the tower workers shall be gathered and led by soldiers and the sisterhood to stand before She Who Slithers. Each one will be led to the front where they will declare their innocence of dissidence to the Serpent. Those who She shows displeasure to will be slain. Those left will be the innocent and those She Who Slithers has given a second chance to atone for their treachery. [Lore {Military/Religion} +2]. Spending THREE Resources to aid in this with more soldiers/proper rituals to thank She Who Slithers for her divine time [+5 total]. [More then happy to kill them all and let She Who Slithers sort it out!]

Motivation
To secure the foundations of the Empire

Feathers and Steel

Aim: Reach a place of prominence amongst the Realms of the House.
Action 1: Hold The Ways - Operations Choice 1, Deep Roads (Operations +2, The Highmost has suffered far worse than the creatures who lurk in the passageways and dark nooks. Most are scared away by light, as structures begin to form along the roads, the beginning workings of connecting nations to the attic city. )
- Note: Over the course of time, many nations have become lost to the rest of the House. While new structures form along ancient roads, scouts will go out to discover- or rediscover, other civilizations along the ways.
Action 2: Blade-Arts - Operations Choice 2, A Sword's Secret (Lore +2, Why do the blades whisper? Why is there a desire to slice, to cut, to bleed and break? What do they want? Can they give us more magic, more power? This unpredictability can also be a bonus, we can communicate, communicate with the way magic bends to our will, and unlock more than our potential. We just need to submit; we just need to be bold.)
- Note: Spending 3 Resources, seek to comprehend these secrets without succumbing to being mastered by the very blades we wield. After all- the creed of the Highmost is harmony and balance as much as it is pride.

Resources: 11 - 3 = 8

Wings beat over the winds of the Second Floor. Once upon a time, they would have heralded doom, despair. But those days were long over, ever since the battle of the Peakgate. The skies no longer belonged to the Wyld Flocks, to the hungry beasts. They belonged to the Highmost. From here, Kylen could see the world from the perspective of the Old Builders, the Giantfolk- and what a world it was. Sadly, she had no time to sightsee.

She urges her Starling onwards, Lendro at her side peering on with his spyglass. Marking the route along an ancient map. The Highmost had records of course, of ways and lands far beyond their own.

It was getting a little depressing how inaccurate so much of it was. The ruined roads, the lost kingdoms. They'd found just... emptiness where the Realm of Silver Leaves had been charted- Not even ruins left of a Kingdom. Whatever happened to them? They hadn't the faintest idea. At least there'd been ruins in other places. Kylen shudders, drawing her thick coat closer over her.

"... Who's on kitchen duty at the outpost? I swear, if I come back to another one of those stupid salads..."

"Ach, don't worry. It's Zem in the kitchen. Said he'd be making his noodles."

"Thank the House. I need something warm in me."

The winds are cold, and the House is vast. As far as the starling flies, Kylen and Lendro find more and more emptiness. When it comes time to turn back, they're both relieved. Let the ground-pounders complain about having to trudge through the reaches and carry building supplies.

This, perhaps, was worse.

The Order
Turn 2
thecaptainsully_an_old_knight_in_full_plate_armour_0c9b5b74-730a-4995-b3f7-73bc67161fe7.png
Leader | Grand Marshall Llewellyn Jones
At the age of 64, the Grand Marshall has ruled for several decades, overseeing the ever improving relations with the Archive. He is a masterful leader and an even better General. He has seen off various threats during his time leading The Order, including a territorial invasion by spiders. A skilled warrior and powerful mage, few within The Order would be able to stand against his might, even if they wanted to.

The first season of his new plan seemed to yield some results. They had developed some basic ranged weaponry, but the magical element of the creations pointed to a potential new direction. Magic was powerful, but entirely reliant on an individuals grasp, or so they had thought. If they could understand and harness the very basis of magic, then there was every opportunity that even the most untuned magician would be capable of great feats. Even so, if the path let to a dead end they had something come from the effort.

On the other side, the forges sprang into life but needed more work before being able to truly improve results. There were rumours of people seeing things in the fire but such nonsense was quickly dismissed by the magistrars. The heat and long working hours was what they attributed the delusions to, the same delusions that riddled the minds of the Cindarchy.

While the first season could have been more fruitful, the main thing was that it wasn't a bad outcome. It was important to keep moving forward and not to be sidetracked by needless issues, they had to reach their goal, it was the only way to ensure the safety of themselves and the rest of those in the house.

Actions Action 1: Lore +3 and spend +2 Resources - Magic - Change tact and move down the path of magic...ranged weapons are excellent but if we can master magic...
Action 2: Lore +3 - Research - Continue Forging Processes - The fire is a tool, not a grand being to be worshipped. We will continue as we have started.

Current Motivation Increase the military power and capability of The Order to even higher levels.

Kingdom of Gillia

Kingdom of Gillia.png

Turn 2

1715439001242.png

There was a room in the castle, built with thick, soundproof walls, a singular, large window to let light in on one side, and a door on each of the other three sides. It featured only a round table with four chairs, as well as metal stands for candles. Other than the guards stationed at each doorway out of the room, there were five important figures present. One of which was King Gracefin II, also known simply as King Torrent, with Advisor Rainwatcher standing by his side. Torrent watched as the other three sat in their seats, taking their usual positions.

On Torrent's left was the first: The Marshal, adorned with a few armor pieces as a well trimmed mustache, his maroon-red back fin missing some chunks; he held a rigid posture, keeping his head up and unmoving, except to give a nod at Torrent's glance. Leader of the kingdom's military, the marshal managed all of the troops and expeditions.

On the other side of the table from Torrent was the second: The High Scholar, wearing a buttoned cloak and tricorn hat, with precise openings in the sleeves for her light blue arm fins; she carried with her some papers, which she rolled up with a sigh after sitting down. The High Scholar represented the various scholars of Gillia, from researchers and engineers to diplomats and professors.

On Torrent's right was the third and last: The High Priest, covered by an intricately woven robe, depicting swirls of currents underwater and in the air, his distinctly Gillian features hidden beneath the purple cloth; he gave a deep bow after entering the room, before sitting down, a slight scowl on his face. The High Priest was the head of the Church of Currents, Gillia's primary religion.

"Let this meeting commence!" Torrent declared with a clap of his hands, "We are gathered here today, for the purpose of determining our course of action in regards to the sudden storms and wails. It is undoubtable that something is occurring, of which could pose danger to Gillia. Marshal, you speak first." Torrent finished with a gesture of his hand to the armored Gillian.

"My King, this event is an unknown to our nation; we must uncover it's source at once, lest we fall prey to disaster." The Scholar and Priest gave nods of approval, "Thus, it is only logical that we send an expedition into the waters."

"And how large would this expedition be, Marshal?"

"Given logistical challenges, and the absence of most Farport forces for the wood gathering mission, I would say a few dozen personnel at most. My advice is forty or so."

"Very good; now it is a question of who we shall send."

The High Scholar then spoke up. "My King, I wish for a detachment of researches to accompany this expedition, so that we may study this phenomenon. Nothing like this has ever occurred before, according to our records, so this is an unprecedented opportunity!"

The High Priest cleared his throat, his scowl growing as he glanced at the High Scholar. "My King, Life's Current has pushed Gillia to encounter this sign, and as such, I must insist that my priests are a part of this."

"As long as they do not interfere with my people's work." The High Scholar retorted.

"So that they are able to provoke what we may find, disregarding divine wisdom?" The High Priest said with a raised eyebrow.

"That is enough." The King said, giving both of them a stare. "Both scholars and priests will be included, for versatility and safety. Marshal, how many troops do you hope to send on this?"

"For the protection of all personnel, I strongly advise that at minimum, half of the forces are soldiers, My King. I also maintain that the expedition's leader be an officer." The Marshal said, his chin held high. The Scholar wore an unsure expression, and the Priest narrowed his eyes.

"If a soldier is in charge, how can we be sure that he holds the interests of the priests?" The Priest asked indignantly; then gave a glance to the Scholar. "...as well as the scholars."

The Scholar looked towards the King, briefly ignoring the other two. "My King, would it not be best for the expedition's leader to be independent? Mayhap a veteran scout, who has experience with these sorts of excursions."

The Marshal went to speak, but the King held out a hand to stop him. "I agree that that is likely the best option, High Scholar." Torrent then stood up. "Now, an expedition of forty personnel will be sent to investigate, consisting of one half soldiers, one quarter scholars, and one quarter priests. The most experienced scout we have will be picked as the leader. Are there any objections?"

After a bout of silence, King Torrent gave a short clap of his hands. "Then it is decided! If there is nothing else, then each of you may take your leave."

"I shall prepare the troops and supply sleds at once, My King!" The Marshal saluted, stepping out of the room.

"I will inform my priests, and choose who among them shall go." The High Priest bowed once again, making his way out.

"My King, before I take my leave, I wished to address the matter of ship designs." The High Scholar said, unrolling the papers she had brought in with her; they had drawings of various hypothetical vessels. "The engineers have done their best, given available research and historical records, but seeing as our race hasn't built a ship in multiple generations, our shipbuilding will likely begin with crude designs until we can get practical tests done."

"I see..." Muttered Torrent, as he looked over the papers and listened to the High Scholar...

...

After a lengthy conversation, the scholar left, leaving only King Gracefin and Advisor Rainwatcher. Torrent let out a deep sigh, slightly slumping in his seat. "Are you feeling alright, King Gracefin?"

Torrent was silent for a moment, then turned his head to look up at his advisor. "Tell me, Rainwatcher: Do you think we are dealing with something we cannot handle?"

"I... would not know, My King. Gillia has fared against threats in the past, though this new problem is like nothing before."

The King closed his eyes in thought, going over the state of his kingdom. Were it to face severe danger or destruction... what then? Would the Gillians be able to rebuild from nothing, or would they fight until they were no more, with nowhere to go to?

Nowhere to go to... or no one to go to?

"Surely we are strong enough to defend ourselves now, as my father had wanted... perhaps it is better to make contact with the house sooner, rather than later." Torrent voiced his thoughts aloud, glancing back up at his advisor.

"Certainly a wise decision, My King." Rainwatcher commented, the side of his mouth forming into a small smile.

"Get that empty sled over here! You there, pick up an axe and get to chopping that wood chunk for transportation!" Glider listened to the captain barking out orders, as he kept swinging his axe into the branch, slowly but surely carving out another chunk.

He took a look to the side, spotting another of the pictograms carved into the bark. Glider found them to be curious, and wished he knew what the symbols and writing meant; alas, he was no scholar, and orders were orders: The captain decided to stick with the mission and gather up the wood to send back. Still, he couldn't help but stare at it, trying to work out what it could mean-

-When the fellow beside him swung his axe into it, replacing that specific pictogram with a deep gorge in the wood, and snapping Glider out of his thoughts.

Oh well, out with the old, in with the new.

Action 1

Operations (+2): Explore

"Investigating the Trouble"

Another expedition was prepared, this time for the voyage to the source of the waves and wails, supply sleds being packed with supplies and personnel chosen. Twenty soldiers, ten scholars, and ten priests would have to work together under the lead of a veteran scout, dealing with whatever they may find.

Whether they'd have to fight, study, or pray, they did share one, crucial thing in common: A determination to solve the trouble, and protect their fellow Gillians.

Action 2

Operations (+2): Gather

"To Meet a Future Demand: The Harvest"

Back on land, the resource expedition set to work on chopping into the branch, carving out large chunks of wood. It would take much effort and time, but the kingdom would have it's rightful resources yet!

Current Motivation

Construct a Shipyard

"Home of the Fleet"

While Gillians may have natural talent in swimming, and have limited transportation by pulling sleds on the surface, this is far from efficient for a growing water-based nation. After all, in order for easy bulk transport of resources and personnel by sea, or ventures out into the deep waters without worry of exhaustion, one needs ships.

Yet, before one can build ships, one needs a place where they can build ships. Therefore, the young King Torrent has set his sights on the first great goal of his rule: Establishing the kingdom's first shipyard.

Turn 2

Eliam stood at the head of the long wooden table, wearing a fine black robe that was the garb of his new station as the head chair of the Whole City government. The robe felt awkward and heavy to him but he forced himself to stand tall and composed within it, despite the nervous flutter in his stomach. The first official meeting of the new government was about to begin, and Eliam was determined to lead with dignity.

The meeting was held in one of the older buildings of New Rise, a place with a long history of communal gatherings and discussions he had been told by Minny. The room was rustic but dignified, with wooden beams overhead and lanterns casting a warm glow across the space. The long table was set with chairs for each of the representatives, and a small platform at one end served as Eliam's place to preside.

As the representatives entered the room, Eliam greeted each of them with a nod and a welcoming smile as he recalled each of their names from Minny. Vicki Ridge of New Rise, Minny herself, Od Cuttings of Brick Brae, and Conna Stone of Stone Ben, each taking their seats around the table.

"Thank you all for coming," Eliam began, his voice steady despite the nerves. "This is our first meeting as the new government of the Whole City, and I'm honoured to be here with you all. Let's start with introductions. Though I'm sure you're all familiar with each other, you may not be familiar with me, so i think it would be a good idea to introduce ourselves and who you represent."

Vicki was the first to speak. "I am Vicki Ridge of New Rise. As you know, New Rise is the most traditional of the townships. Our people continue to practice the old ways, working the land with devotion. Recent changes have brought challenges, but we remain steadfast in our commitment to the Hairy Hill Maker and the soil."

Minny spoke next. "I'm Minny Star of Shadow Hill. Shadow Hill has faced its share of struggles, given the state of our local soil and the shadow of the House that loom over us. However, we have made great strides in establishing ties with the Housefolk, which continuously opens new opportunities for our people. Opportunities we are eager to encourage."

Conna leaned forward, her tone confident as she spoke. "Conna Stone of Stone Ben. Stone Ben has always prided itself on speed and innovation. Our banded beasts are the swiftest, and we aim to use this advantage to expand trade and communication with the other townships. Even more so, in the light of the discovery of the tunnels"

Od Cuttings couldn't resist responding to Conna's remarks. "Speed is all well and good, Conna, but without strength and resilience, it's just a fleeting advantage. Brick Brae's banded beasts are known for their durability and ability to carry heavy loads. Our focus on strength allows us to support the other townships in times of need and work together more effectively."

Conna raised an eyebrow at Od's comment. "Durability is important, of course, but speed can be the key to agility and adaptability. Our quick beasts can deliver messages and goods faster than any other township, making communication and trade more efficient."

Od scoffed playfully. "Efficiency isn't everything, Conna. We can't overlook the importance of sturdiness in our beasts and the work they accomplish. After all, the strongest foundation is one built to last."

Vicki Ridge intervened as the conversation between Conna and Od heated up. She raised a hand, her expression gentle yet firm. "Both speed and strength are valuable assets that each of the twin townships brings to the table," she said diplomatically. "That is something we can all agree on"

"Also Od, your passion got the best of you. You have not formally introduced yourself to the Head Chair yet" chimed in Minny.

The older man's cheeks reddened, causing a murmur of laughter "Od Cuttings of Brick Brae, my good man" he stated, looking at Eliam.

Eliam swallowed as he introduced himself. "I'm Eliam Glane of Shadow Hill. My family has had a stall at the towns market now for three generations where we sell Household goods. A heritage I hope will allow me to serve in this new capacity, honestly and fairly."

Eliam paused, looking at the representatives in turn, in an attempt gauge their reaction but they all seemed happy enough with his performance so far. "I don't take this responsibility lightly. It is a privilege to work alongside you all, and the people you represent. The journey ahead will require cooperation, open-mindedness and patience with each other. So let's work together to build a stronger, more united community"

There were affirming nods from those gathered. "I look forward to hearing your thoughts, ideas, and concerns as we navigate this new path together. With that said, who has any issues they'd like to raise?...."

THE BLACKFIRE CINDARCHY
raf,360x360,075,t,fafafa_ca443f4786.jpg
With the success of the ritual, things began to move faster in the Cindarchy. Already, the average littlefolk in the city was beginning to look at Luminous Pyre as something more. The Cindarch herself was unsure yet as to the change in her reputation, but felt that she’d consider it a positive change once she grew used to it. The ancient fairy did, however, enjoy the change in Ardent Spark III. The child was so much more exuberant now, what with the success of the ritual and more of said rituals being planned already. In fact, the priestess was in the final stages of planning for the next ritual, which should take place rather soon. This one would be held outdoors, to encourage wider attendance than the first.

The Dread Marshall expected to encounter difficulties during the expedition, but so soon? This was an issue. The Cindarch wanted the north explored so that the nation could expand, but for the ground to shake so severely so close to Fort Farwatch… A proper investigation needed to be mounted. If the Fort were to fall, Cinderspire would be blind to outside threats.

He set aside the report he’d been reading, then stood and went through the door of his quarters. Beyond that threshold, Fort Farwatch operated as normal. Soldiers trained, mages studied or mediated, servants organized supplies and maintained structures. His eyes passed over these things with only the slightest regard, instead locking on a soldier standing guard nearby. “Olthorp, I need a messenger. High priority.” The soldier, Olthorp, snapped a salute then ran off towards another structure on the far side of the fort. Satisfied, Smouldering Ash returned to his chambers and began to write.

Captain Firebreak,

The matter regarding the shaking of the earth is to be your primary concern. Set camp at your current location. You will be receiving additional support in the form of soldiers, supplies, and a mage. Once they arrive, you are to begin an investigation into the cause of the earth-shaking. If it is a natural phenomena with no discernable solution, continue forward with the expedition. If it has been caused by hostile forces or some manner of beast, determine the strength of the opposition and eliminate it if possible.

Go forth with the strength and will of the Cindarchy at your side, and deliver upon our foes the divine judgment of Fire.

-Dread Marshall Smouldering Ash

The messenger was already waiting at the door by the time he finished writing. Handing off the message with orders to deliver it as soon as possible, Smouldering Ash set off to the command chambers. He had a relief force to begin assembling.

Actions
1. Lore[Divine] (+3) - Allow the reputation of the Cindarch to grow, expanding her divinity further, continuing this path to the end of the year has the potential to create an organized religion (gain +1 to divine, this allows you to add a +1 to divine lore rolls. However, any failure can cause dissonance in the ranks of the people and can affect the resolve or communications of your people)

2. Operations[Explore] (+0)(+2 resources) - Something caused that earthquake. There’s a whisper among the troops. What if something lies in the floor, directly below Fort Farwatch, hidden under the colorful tapestry? Some brush it off as hearsay, of ridiculous superstition…but who knows what lies beneath? (Unlocks a mystery to follow, the DC of certain tasks will be a lot higher, but there is a chance of a reward at the end of the year).

Motivation
Rekindle the Blackfire Cindarchy. Shake off feelings of stagnation and galvanize the populace.

Turn 2
"How's he getting on?" Toshiharu's voice echoed through the dimly lit corridor to Hide's workshop as he approached Hiroyuki, who leaned against the wall, seemingly ruminating over something.

"No clue." Hiroyuki replied, pushing himself off the wall to face his brother. "Keeps mumbling this, that and the other. I offered to lend a hand, but he shooed me away like I was about to wreck his entire setup. Can you believe him?"

"You probably would, Hiro." Hiroyuki shot Toshiharu a look. "What? I'm just being honest. Every time you try and help Hide in his workshop, you wind up getting so frustrated you almost destroy the place."

"That was one time!" Hiroyuki protested, jabbing a finger in Toshiharu's direction. "One time and you know it, Toshi! I know you and the others think I'm all brawn and no brain but I'm just as smart as the rest of you!"

"That might be true but you know Hide is on a whole other level. He's the master of the Path of Earth for a reason." Toshiharu put a comforting hand on Hiroyuki's shoulder. "Look, just leave him to it, brother. You know he'll figure out our map problem eventually. Probably quicker if the rest of us stop bugging him."

Hiroyuki raised an eyebrow. "If that's the case, then why are you here?"

Toshiharu grinned sheepishly, revealing the plate of algae-covered bread chunks he had been holding behind his back. "Thought Hide might need a snack. You want some? It's just like father used to make."

"No, I'll pass." Hiroyuki seemed physically repulsed at the idea. "I can't believe you still eat that stuff."

"It's good for you!" Toshiharu took an exaggerated bite before waving the plate under Hiroyuki's nose. "You sure I can't tempt you?"

"Get that gunk away from me!" Hiroyuki swatted at the plate, but Toshiharu dodged it.

"Suit yourself, Hiro." Toshiharu swallowed with an audible gulp. "I'm sure Hide will appreciate it even if you don't."

1.
Continue to explore the pipework! This is the clan's home, their primary domain. While water and floods, rust and cracks happen, we are strong and persistent. We can mark our territory out and expand to all corners of the house. Perhaps even beyond? (If you continue along this route, you can gain a +1 to Operations for exploring the house. However, failure may result in a loss of operations or resources).
2. Can other materials be used? Can other ways of tracking and tracing, of following those that explore the pipes be acquired? What are the rumours of magic? Whispers in the walls, of the fate of our folks. There must be a way to tame, to control, so we can be the victors, the ones who come out on top. Is there a way to reclaim what is ours? (Unlocks a mystery to follow. This could grant a boon/ability at the end of the year; however, any failure could result in an unknown result that may affect the clan). (+1 Resources)

Aims
Explore and map out the household's plumbing system so the Yoshihama Clan has quick and covert access to each floor and the outside of the house as well as various locations between.

  • Action 1 - Lore: Magic. Continue trying to compress emotional energy into the first iteration of an energy cell, which supplies power at a higher efficiency than normal. Allows for the enhancement of magical machinery or spell casting. (Lore +2)
  • Action 2 - Lore: Research. Investigate Secret. Look into the strange magic that hindered talisman creation. Spend 3 Resources to aid in efforts. (Lore +2, Resources Spent +3. Total +5)

  • Current Motivation: Build the basis needed for the invention of a new line of flying devices, one far better equipped than the balloons of the current time. Planes.

"Some efforts are meant to end in failure like they always have and always will. Still, have we not lived among the dust of this earth for generations, continuing forward amidst suffering and strife? Looking back on the ancestors of old, how could we claim to be worthy of the stars if we allow a single season without progress to stop us? These works are the foundation of our dreams; before we suffer losses, how can we give up?"

The Pathfinder smiles, claw-like fingers settling onto the podium as they speak, a well-recited address repeated thrice in front of the scientists, the hunters, and all the Lightborne who care to listen. Their mask is clipped onto their side, their open face a sign of honesty.

"Still, we are not an obstinate people. So, while we continue forward, we will make the most of our new discoveries—for they are not failures—and see what new mysteries the cosmos has set before us. Stand fast, and let us seek always the stars above."

The Grove

“C’mon there Callarhan, I’ve seen you fight better than that!” Mikasa smirked at his friends, his spear held in a ready position. “Don’t tell me those dreams of some ‘snowwoman’ have been affecting you this much!”
“Oh be quiet Mikasa, just need to get good and warmed up,” The other Taur shot the words back as he pushed himself up off the ground, his dark spear barely holding his weight as he used it as a lever. “Shall we go again?”
“I am afraid that I must stop the two of you now,” An aged voice called out from the side of the small grounds the two were practicing, their heads turning to see Bos standing there with his hands clasped. “Mikasa, come. We must speak at once.”
“Yes Council Head, at once,” Tossing his spear to the other Taur, Mikasa quickly followed after the Elder. Once they were a fair distance away he hesitantly vegan to speak. “What was it you needed from me?”
“You are to be summoned to the council chambers soon, and sent on a mission to the North,” Bos stares straight ahead as he speaks, not looking at his younger companion.
“The North? But that-“ Mikasa stopped mid sentence as Bos raised a hand.
“Aye, I know. The Beast is that direction,” Bos stops as they reach the edge of the settlement and Mikasa realizes that he has been lead to the Northern edge. “Your mission will be to discover what it actually is, and if it is truly a danger to us.”
“Why me Council Head?” Mikasa stared to the edge of the Forest, the line that they religiously held in all other directions just barely tamed in this direction.
“You are our best Woodstaur Mikasa, and the other believe you are our best chance of success.”
“And you Council Head?”
For the first time since they began walking Bos turned to him and stared him in the face. “I believe that you are the only among us who has a chance to come back alive.” As his words hung in the air between the two Bos turned back and began to hobble back towards the Council Chambers. “Prepare yourself Mikasa, for this will be your most dangerous mission yet.”

Actions
Action 1 - Lore +3 - Follow up on the mystery of the South Fields

Action 2 - Operations +1 - Send a Taur to the North to discover the mystery of the Beast.

Motivation - To Become One With Nature - Attempt to more closely commune with the natural world that surrounds the people of the Grove.

Turn 2 – To Learn is to Grow

The mushrooms are tall and bury themselves deep into the stone and ruined floorboards of the basement. The material is fibrous. But touching and trying to move the mushrooms causes spores to fall from them. These spores are also luminous and any contact on skin makes that patch of skin glow for a period.

It seems the tunnel goes deeper and continues to be covered with mushrooms. There must be a source of them somewhere.

Lore Choices:
  • Continue investigating the mushrooms and the strange spores that come from them. Short term exposure hasn't uncovered any issues so far. There’s a sweet smell that comes from the mushrooms that is quite pleasant. (Continue exploring this mystery, may grant a boon at the end of the year).
  • Should we continue to risk it? We don't know what long term exposure is going to do. This could be a big issue for us in the future. Best to leave and find another way around. (Leaving the mushrooms and finding another route abandons the current mission and won't be able to come back until next season. However, has the potential to gain +1 to Operations).

Turn 2 - Sturdy Beams offer Safety

The debris of the tunnel is heavy and filled with more than just stone. It seems part of the collapse came from the higher reaches of the house, offering material not usually found in the basement. Roof tiles, strange, twisted metal, and glass. But work can be done to clear the material, perhaps this can be used for something else?

Operations Choices:
  • Pause the clearing of the tunnels to focus on researching the materials that have fallen. These could be used as supplies and materials. (Can give +2 resources to the nation if successful, however the resources are heavy and bulky, and time will need to be taken to move these to a place where they can be studied and catalogued).
  • Continue with the clearing and come back to the materials later, they can wait, we've got bigger fish to fry clearing and continuing to reinforce the tunnels. (Continue with your work, gives a +1 bonus to your next roll working with the materials).

The Archives
LadyOfStars LadyOfStars
Turn 2: Should Knowledge be Secret?
Secrets are found in these books. Old knowledge from the past, from those that came before. An understanding that there is more available than what can be seen in front of them.

The Archivists have been around since the little folk first stepped into these walls. As such, much information has been squirreled away, and much more discovered since The Archives were set up in the ancient walls of the library. Magic is in the walls of the house, the very people that reside in it. But how do we discover more?

Magic Choices:
  • The tomes of forbidden knowledge seem to have the key, and the Sending spell seems more likely to be crafted. But these books don’t seem to be written by the same hand. A strange cursive font, which hushed whispers come from. A promise of power, of a deeper understanding of the ways of magic. Perhaps this can be useful for The Archives to succeed, to protect the people? (Continue exploring this mystery, may grant a boon at the end of the year).
  • These tomes… these walls. Is something further hidden? Should she continue down this path? Magic can unlock so much power, but there is limited understanding of it. What if something bad happens? (Leaving the tomes and finding another way to unlock the Sending spell abandons the current mission, and you won’t be able to return to it for the rest of the season, however, continuing to work on crafting the spell may still unlock it after the year is over.)
Turn 2: Beyond Our Home, Beyond the Shelves?

The library has been the home to the Archivists for so long. It’s hard to believe that there has been a place not uncovered already. With the ranks of The Order taking up the other side, they have a well defended fortification here that is difficult to overthrow. This could be nothing but nonsense, the Archive has been home to their people for so long. This is just ancient history of their people obviously, nothing that wouldn’t have been catalogued and made a note of deep in the Archives.

Operations Choices:
  • But, exploration of the upper shelves, about 2 miles above the main Archive city, reveal a tunnel that was covered with webs, ancient carvings can be found on the walls that lead deeper into the house. What is hiding here? (Continue exploring this mystery, may grant a boon at the end of the season).
  • It’s important to continue the expansion of learning and knowledge to other nations, no time to go delving into the walls. (Continue with your work to send tutors to other nations, gives a +1 bonus to your next roll working towards this goal. This will result in not being able to finish this mystery for the rest of the year).

The 13th Regiment

Trektek Trektek

With each man, the construction of THE FORT can begin. A place was scouted, and the foundation was laid down. A rhythm would be easy to acquire if that darn music didn't keep playing and interrupting the process.

No matter, focusing on strange songs with no evidence of what lay beyond? Poppycock I tell you! We're men of metal, we're strong and can ignore the mystery unless it is replaced with cold. hard. facts!

However, as the work at home base continues, so too does the delve to find members of the Lost Regiment. We can't predict the number of enemies that might be in the walls, after skirmishes with rats, there could be things far worse. We shall proceed and stick to the mission at hand! For our fallen comrades.

Turn 2 - A Block in the Road

As the 10-minute break ends, the further descent of the basement stairs commences. Some dangers lurk even outside of the walls. A section of stairs is completely rotten, leaving a large crevasse where at once would have been wood.

It seems termites have made a meal of whatever this was, but it makes a large gap that is difficult to navigate. Your scouts don't seem confident in the stability of the wood either.

Operations Explore Choices
  • Try to find a way to scale the gap that was created, though it is uncertain how stable the wood is. (Crossing will allow continuation of the mission at hand, but failure may result in the loss of troops).
  • There must be another way around, perhaps back through the tunnel. Or, if termites have chewed through the wood, perhaps there is a pathway around they have made themselves? (Try to find a safer route around, a higher DC due to the challenge ahead. However, success will mean a safe route without the loss of men. After an attempt is made, no other attempts can be made to find another way around).

Turn 2 - Operation: Base Construction in Progress

An attempt has been made, to build a fort that is strong, ready to be used as the GRAND HOME BASE of the 13th regiment. As the foundations have been laid, however, a problem arises.

Under the area where the regiment was planning to build, the remains of a nest of ants can be seen. While the ants seem to have moved on, all the little tunnels mean the ground is unstable, and prone to collapse. It seems they have burrowed further and further. Making the entire area almost unusable.

Operations Build Choices
  • Begin the arduous process of filling in the holes to make the ground more stable. (Will take a while to do but will automatically grant a +1 to warfare due to more stable construction).
  • Why did the ants leave this area? Usually, they nest for many seasons, but investigating the nest shows the tunnels to be abandoned. Was there a reason? Or just a mass migration. (Investigate the reason the ants are missing. (Unlocks a mystery to follow, this could grant a boon/ability at the end of the year. However, there is also the chance of a negative effect).

The Empire of the Emerald Scale

Cosmo Cosmo

Turn 2 – Gold of the Past

As the workers descend, digging and uncovering whatever the shiny thing is, it becomes clear that it is an old metal box. Massive, larger than anything ever seen by the Empire before. It is heavy and difficult to manoeuvre, no matter how hard the workers try it just won’t budge.

But there’s an indication that this was once something important to someone. There’s a large padlock on the front of the box, half buried still in the ground. It would take time to crack open, but perhaps more can be discovered from this.

Operations Choices
  • Further attempts to remove the box will take more resources to expend. (It will take a while; however, it guarantees success on the box being pulled out from the dirt, allowing an attempt at breaking open the lock).
  • It’s just a box, that could be worthless to the Empire. The resources are not worth spending to find out what’s inside. We shall continue gathering resources instead. (Can stop following the mystery and continue gathering wood and resources around the box for use in the Empire).

Turn 2 – Remove Those in our way

While She Who Slithers is all-knowing, it is difficult to tell who out of the present individuals is a traitor. They are all tight-lipped, either out of fear and respect or out of anger and disdain. While it is difficult to reveal who is causing problems, it is an easy issue to resolve. She Who Slithers will happily remove those without discrimination.

However, will removing those loyal resolve issues?

Religion Choices
  • Cleanse and remove all, there’s no point wasting time trying to figure out who the traitor is. They can recruit new people, those who will have to prove their loyalty. (Removing all the individuals reduces diplomacy by 1, as the people begin to show disdain for the cruelty of the Empire).
  • Those loyal to She Who Slithers and the Empire make up the backbone of this society. Without the people, the Empire would be nothing. Take further time to weed out those traitors and remove them, keeping the rest of the people safe. (The seeds of dissonance will take time to remove as they run deep. However, successful removal without killing any innocent civilians will gain a +1 in Diplomacy and +1 in Resources, as further loyalty to the Empire grows among the people).

The Highmost
ThatWhichShouldBe ThatWhichShouldBe
Turn 2 – To Keep on Task

And so, we continue digging, carving tunnels, and laying supports for those to travel through. Chasing away the creatures that scurry to and from, you are successful in this season of progressing further down from the attic.

However, with the season-ending, disaster strikes! It seems an old pipe has burst flooding a section of stairs and wall. Rot has begun eating away at the wood and strange mould is beginning to form at the safer passageway.

Operations Choices:
  • Forge on ahead. The rapids and waves are strong and unpredictable, and you’re not sure how sturdy the wood is for a foundation. But, building a bridge to cross the stream that has affected this lower section of stairs is the most logical solution. (Take your time and -1 resource to build a bridge for a quicker way across the stream. This will take two seasons).
  • There’s got to be a way around this blockade. Fording the river may cause those to be lost in the flood. Our birds can carry things across, but the awkwardness of the staircase will take a lot of manoeuvring and precise flying. (Find another way to cross the river, perhaps there are tunnels in the wall that can bypass the flood. This will be the quicker option but more dangerous).
Turn 2 – Understanding Grows

Beloved Lord, master of the sword. The words it whispers and the language it talks is foreign. However, you take the time to let it lead you. Follow where it’s meant to guide. The ways of the blade, of parrying and dancing, it is becoming one with you, your arm, and your soul.

Runes begin to form on the blade you practice with, strange runes in an arcane language. How do you decipher them?

Lore Choices:
  • The sword is guiding you. Work with researchers to decipher the runes on the blade. (Continue the path of the secret, this may give you a boon at the end of the year).
  • This magic is unusual and unpredictable. Who knows what to expect from strange, otherworldly magic? We cannot predict the outcome, is this wise? (Lock the sword away and continue developing blade arts without the use of magic. Stops the current quest and won’t be able to continue for the rest of the season).
