Yeah, I feel wrong taking on a character unless they are either so passingly mentioned that they could have easily been a cardboard cut out just drug around on a string, or I've spent a huge amount of time pouring over their characterizations to get in their head.

Dark, always. It is so much easier on my eyes, and as other people have mentioned: much nicer when looking on the phone in a darkened room.
