LORE:

This is some of the lore for the setting, you can use it as a guide for creating your characters/coming up with ideas. This is going to be a collaborative sort of roleplay so feel free to make any suggestions, and also if you have any lore-related questions, you can ask them here.

The Setting:
Leranor is the island of which Eobine rests. It used to be it's own nation, ruled by it's own leader, but is now governed by the nearby Euslaric Empire. Given Eobine's spectacular size, most of the island is taken up by the base of the Tree and it's roots, the latter of which extend far out into the oceans surrounding it. The land that isn't covered by Eobine is mainly taken up by port towns and trading centers, as many of the materials found exclusively or mostly on Eobine are now widely used throughout the entire world. Once you actually start to get onto Eobine itself, the lower half is mostly tourist spots.

Leranor is a place constantly facing controversy. Natives being pushed out of their own culture and mistreated is an ongoing issue - many sacred sites around the tree were destroyed many years ago against protests when the island was being industrialised, meanwhile, their culture, rituals, ect. were being taken and repackaged as weird, quirky things for tourists to gawk at and mock. In recent years, the fight against this has been strengthening, and Leranians have gradually been able to reestablish themselves, but it's by no means a solved issue. Additionally, for many, not just on Leranor, Eobine is considered a sacred tree, too, so there's always constant controversy over the treatment of it in general - many argue that it should be respected and revered, and constantly draining it of it's resources is not it's intended purpose.

The native language of the island is Leranian, however, the majority of the people there now either speak it as a second language to Euslaric (which, in the context of the roleplay, is English - basically, the language the characters are going to be speaking) or soley speak Euslaric.

Eobine, often also referred to as the Great Tree, is the focal point of Leranor Island. It is a tremendous size, and is of unknown height, as no one has ever been able to document reaching the top. It has been around for as long as human memory survives, and no one has ever truly been able to figure out what exactly it is or how it came to be.

It defies all expected laws of physics, nature, and reason. First of all because of it's size, but also because of the wildlife and phenomena found there. For one, many of the creatures found on Eobine are not only exclusive to Eobine, but exclusive to particular layers/heights of Eobine, almost as if the tree has different 'biomes' and habitats. These creatures often possess fantastical features unseen on other animals.. but a lot of these features also make them incredibly deadly. Even the plantlife has a bit of bite to them sometimes. If you're going past any of the designated safe 'layers' of Eobine, not preparing yourself for this is basically suicide. But, if you do take these creatures down, they usually contain a wide range of 'elements' that can be extracted and used to your benefit.

What is documented of Eobine is often organized into 'layers'. The general rule is, the higher you go, the more dangerous it becomes. The first ten or so layers of Eobine are considered safe, and have many different towns and cities on it. From there, it gets steadily more treacherous. Trained professionals who are there to harvest particular elements routinely go past this point, but there's also a huge trend of people organizing their own private expeditions, for their own reasons. Officials of Leranor tried to dissuade people from doing this, but technically no one 'owns' all of Eobine and can't prevent them from doing this, and it was taking up too much time and effort for something that wasn't working, so now they basically have a rule of 'if you die, it's your own damn fault'.

There are some layers that have been documented, but only a handful of times, and are considered so dangerous that even trained professionals don't go up there if they can't help it. There are rumors of a 'Deadman's Layer', a layer that people have yet to go past and live to tell the tale, but it's a very enigmatic thing and not much is known.

Euslaric Empire - For simplicities sake, they're a huge empire that control many countries on Earth, notably Leranor, where Eobine resides.
Helmfirth - A village on the tenth layer of Eobine, where the characters will start out. Since it's right on the brink of the more 'interesting' layers, many people come through with dreams of glory and fame.. the villagers hate most of the people passing through, given that they mainly swarm their taverns, get outrageously drunk, climb one layer then give up, but since these people drive most of their profits they have to live with it.

Technologies/Magic System/Etc.
This world hasn't gotten a grasp on electricity yet, but for all intents and purposes they don't really.. need to. A lot of their technologies are powered by elements mainly found on Eobine - notably, what we would consider 'electricity' in our world is known as Salvus here, and it's an element found in the moss that grows on Eobine. It regrows fast and you don't need much of it to power something up, so it's used everywhere - to fuel transport, to power technology, ect.

I don't really want to create an enviroment where people are anxious to mention, say, typewriters, because they're not 100% sure whether or not those would exist here. So I'm going to keep it really loose and say, as long as a piece of technology doesn't seem really futuristic, or can't be explained with 'it's powered by salvus/some other element', you're good to go. It's one of those things where they're somewhat primitive and stuck in medieval times compared to us, but surpass us in other ways due to harnessing magic.

Like in the real world, humans are not born with any particularly interesting abilities.. but that doesn't stop them from augmenting themselves until they do.
Many of the plants, animals and raw materials found on Leranor contain elements we would consider 'magic', and these elements are extracted from them and put into forms that can be harnessed by humans. Several of these methods are:

- Enchanting items. Items can be enchanted to have new and improved properties. This is a very common method, used in daily life. Farmers often only use seeds that have been enchanted to withstand harsh weathers and disease, sentimental items are usually enchanted so that they don't break or degrade as easily, etc. More outlandish enchantments are available, although heavily regulated and expensive - if you want to get a sword that sets things on fire upon contact, or a nose piercing that makes you frost resistant, it'll fetch you a pretty penny, and unless you're rich you probably only own one item like that. The enchantments usually do weaken over time and eventually wear off, but this usually takes years.

- Tattoos. Tattoos are a more extreme medium where people can draw powers from. A Tattoo Artist uses special ink, mixed with different materials found in the world to bestow abilities and spells to people.

Materials used in the tattoos are graded in both their element and quality. Materials coming from a Salamander(A weak fire monster) would be considered to be a "Fire Epsilon", while materials coming from a Red Dragon (an extremely strong fire monster) would be considered to be a "Fire Alpha". The amount of elements are endless, but their grade conforms with the quality (From lowest to highest: Epsilon, Delta, Gamma, Beta, Alpha).

The tattoo design is also extremely important, because it alters significantly the way the tattoo works. The simple ones confers simple spells and abilities to the tattooed, according to the material used. The more detailed ones either use a specific aspect of an element(Fire resistance, alacrity of wind, etc), or potencialize a certain aspect of it (A small fireball and a large fireball would require different tattoo designs).

The tattoos draw upon the caster's fatigue, using the energy of the body to cast spells. Stronger spells use more energy, making people more tired, while simple spells don't draw as much energy. If a caster pushes themselves past their exhaustion point, they may pass out. Some people use enchanted food along with tatoos to either extend their usefulness in battle and to potencialize the tattoo effects. (This section of lore was written by Gabe Gabe !)

- Edible enchantments. Potions are very similar to the role of regular medicines. Their effects last for as long as they're in your system, so they're very temporary. Not limited to just potions, you can also bake enchantments into meals.

Further notes on elements:
Since Eobine has so many different sections and types of nature, there's a huge range of elements that do specific things, but the more 'powerful' it is, the more expensive or rare it is, and the more likely it is that you've had specific training to use it. For instance: elements that are used to make you resistant to common illnesses are about as easy to find and use as you would regular cold medicine, and a layman can often get their hands on it easily. But if you have an item that allows you to make things combust into flames when you're holding it - it's likely you had to train to use and control that, and very unlikely that you're also just as skilled in a completely opposite element branch, like one that deals more with ice and freezing things. There are some who master multiple schools of elementalism, but basically - not all elements are easy to use and master, especially if you're dealing with something combat based.

Misc. -

- The language the character's will be speaking in is called Euslaric, in this world. (Basically if you're wondering, 'What language should I say they're speaking, since England doesn't exist so it'd be weird if it was called English?" lolol)
- On Leranor, and Eobine itself, a huge chunk of the population is travellers. So there's a very diverse fashion scene, and it's virtually impossible to underline one set way that people tend to dress.
- If you're stuck on jobs to give your character, some ideas are tattoo artists (the body modification scene is huge, particularly because most people get some minor form of enchanted tattoo and it's something only trained professionals can give), an Extracter (someone who is trained to retrieve certain materials from Eobine, also sometimes known as Hunters) or an Enchanter (someone trained to enchant items, usually very specialised to only give certain enchantments.) Apart from that - most regular jobs apply!
