The king had woken up in the middle of the night, the sound of rain pattering on the roof of his tent. Well, calling it a tent was an understatement. He had made sure his residing were more sturdy and befitting a king than a miserable tent. You didn't always need to forfeit comfort in war, especially when you thrived in it either way, feather bed or not.
The camp had been quiet, fires from the few who stayed up dying down thanks to the rain, embers glowing in the ashes before slowly going out. Argon didn't go outside on one of his usual excursions. He needed sleep even though it slipped his grasp in the night. He laid back down, the room so black it seemed he was gazing into nothingness. He allowed his mind the luxury to draw images of better times, of a certain Queen who actually made his heart race as if he was a silly teenager all over again. He was alone in a kingdom full of people due to her absence, left with a weak, scrawny heir. He had plans for that, however.
Argon finally let his eyes close.
"You enjoy chess, no?" The king got off the chair, heading to the middle of the room where he had placed his favorite set of chess. The board was weathered
He woke up to the commotion of the camp, bustling soldiers and smells of meat cooking on spits. The weather was perfect for a day such as this. Argon dressed himself, putting on an elaborately designed shirt that was as red as a ruby and gilded with golden thread. His pants were the same, and gold boots adorned his feet. His cloak matched as well, and he fastened it swiftly and grabbed his sword before exiting his chambers and heading towards the throne room, where he saw his general. His general was one of the few people he truly respected and even admired. She was a gilded dagger; nice to look at but still quite dangerous. A nice combination, if you asked the king. Add her wits and she was the most valued person the King had at his disposal. He gave her a warm smile as he entered, his cloak billowing behind him as he moved to the throne and sat, eyeing her. He listened to what she said, running through it in his mind. He almost laughed at the steely glint in her eyes.
"Those who wish peace know the other opponent has a better hand and is ready to deal.
"You enjoy chess, no?" The king got off the chair, heading to the middle of the room where he had placed his favorite set of chess. The board was weathered, the pieces nothing more than oak whittled down to resemble certain shapes. They were already in a certain position from an earlier game that had to be dismissed, and he ran his thumb over the mane of the black knight. The piece was in the middle of the action, pieces surrounding it as it was protected from the white's bishop by a pawn.
"You see, if the bishop takes the knight, I will reclaim the bishop with my pawn. The pieces are of the same worth, but when I move to capture," Argon made the moves as he spoke, the bishop and night being replaced by the smaller piece. "I now have a better position. I will be able to get through the king's defenses, and so the game shall end.
"You see, the point I am trying to make, is that we should definitely go meet the king. We can see how he is doing, how everything is holding out. Maybe we have to sacrifice some things, but slowly, bit by bit, we will make our position better. We will take them by surprise that rushes over them like a storm."

Argon sighed when his general brought up his son. He didn't know what he did to displeased the gods so much that they'd sent him a sickly, scrawny twig of a boy (but then again he did) and now he was stuck with him. It would have been easy to dispose of the boy since he was always so sick that Argon could have simply suffocated him in his sleep and called it a day, but Argon kept reminding himself that the boy might have use in the future. Not to mention he was the only reminder of Argon's departed wife. An awful reminder that Argon wanted to lock up so he wouldn't be reminded of what he had created, but a reminder nonetheless.
"I think Kuro is able to formulate plans of action, so I would actually bring him along. Maybe he and the princess would bond, eh?" Argon chuckled at that.
"I doubt the princess would be head over heels for the boy, but then again, they don't exactly have room to argue against it with the state they're in. They might see a the proposal as an insurance that because I'm offering my son, I will have mercy for them. We don't want to crush them, Saphira. I don't want anything in Origo ruined. We will simply attend this peace meeting and act dignified. No need for fear tactics, just make an imposing appearance. Even spending a few hours in Origo will give us what we need."
Argon turned to a dark corner in the room, his eyebrows furrowed in annoyance. Kuro had his during important meetings like this ever since he could walk, and Argon spent most of the time ignoring him, simply hoping the boy would pick up information to at least make him somewhat useful. However, this was a topic that involved him as well.
"Kuro, you might as well come out and join us. It's not a king's way to scurry around and hide like a mouse."

Kuro had been awake all night. not do to the pitter patter of rain droplets outside his tent, which was situated beside the kings tent, but instead do to the fact he had to sneak out on this trip to Origo Aurea. he was supposed to stay home at the castle due to 'health concerns' about the trip, though he suspected that he was just unwanted as he usually was, but he'd snuck out and they were too far into the trip to turn back and drop him back off at home when they found him hiding. no one really believed he could be the king, though he would still try. he wanted to go out and take a walk, but it was far too dark outside and it was still raining, he couldn't afford to get sick now of all times! thus, Kuro spent the rest of the night thinking of ways to prove himself of being the absolute best king to ever exist, dreaming up scenario's where his specialties would come in handy and where people would be on their knees asking for forgiveness of their disbelief because he'd saved them all.
Kuro was snapped out of his daydreaming by morning light, quickly rising and putting on the usual raven black oversized cloak and white pantaloons underneath, strapping on his belt of small kunai, though the outfit itself hadn't been very special, it had allowed him to be mostly discreet and dangerous. flipping on the hood so no one saw his face he ventured out into the camp. the camp itself was bustling with activity, soldiers moving around and chatting as though they were preparing for something he was unaware of, the scent of meat cooking filled his senses and made his mouth water with unforeseen hunger, and the sun was shining as though it hadn't been a downpour the night before, all in all the tides seemed in their favor for a great day this evening.
the prince decided now would be a great time to sneak into his fathers tent, if you could even call it that, and listen in on all his conversations as he'd always done. slowly but surely, he waited for the perfect opportunity to sneak in, and found an opening were no one would notice. silently and swiftly he went into the tent, sneaking into a dark corner where you would be unable to notice him, and listened in on the conversation between Saphira and Argon. he stayed generally neutral throughout the entire thing, though the fact his father used chess pieces to set an example came off as somewhat strange to him, he supposed it was just his 'eccentric'. near the end, he smiled at Saphira's comment they should bring him as future king, the general earning a new found respect from him as a human being, though he disagreed on the line about not needing courtesy, he thought that he will forgive her ignorance for now. rushing in with fear tactics may be a great strategy short term for claiming the kingdom, and one may be able to rule like that for quite a while, the people would likely revolt and it'd cause mass panic throughout the rest of the kingdom, leading to great distrust of the nobles and royal family and eventually leading to forming separate factions with most of the lower and middle classes refusing to work in protest therefore crashing the economy. could no one see that? or maybe he was just overthinking it, he'd been doing quite a bit of it lately.
