give 'em hell, kid.
I've decided not to code the rules like the rest of the lore to ensure they're easy to read for everyone. Now you have no excuses.

•The obvious: no godmodding, killing other people’s characters or just generally wrecking things for others. It's not cool, you're not cool, and I think we’re all past the age of twelve on here… and if you're not, this rp is probably a bit too dark for you anyway.

•Considering the setting, triggers are possible and likely. Be mature enough to accept this fact, please.

•I shouldn't have to say it on this site, but no breaking the site's adult content/ERP rules. I mean, if your first thought is ERP in a setting based off of zombies trying to eat people… well...I don't wanna be rude, but buddy, you need help.

•You are more than welcome to create flawed characters that aren't nice or friendly, but no raging psychopaths or serial killers, thanks. In the same vein, having one, MAYBE two at most, military/survival/police type characters in the setting is okay. Ten of them is just boring. Be creative!

•I don't do hard post length rules as these things ebb and flow, but please try to write at least one, and preferably two or more paragraphs regularly. This isn't a one-liner rp, and if others are putting in effort to bring the setting and characters to life, it's only fair you do the same.

•Romance isn't my thing, but it adds drama and is acceptable as long as it doesn't turn into a 1x1 between the two characters or take away from the setting.

•And speaking of drama, keep it in the rp or else. If someone is being obnoxious or breaking the rules, come to me first before starting anything with the drama llama in question. It's better that way… trust me. if you do choose to start drama, be aware you'll be kicked from the rp and your character will either be killed off and zombified or turned into the resident joke. You have been warned.

•If you want to leave the rp, that's okay. Life gets in the way of the best plans. I get it. Just please please PLEASE let me know or write yourself out. Please.

•The main OOC will be on Discord, and I'll pm you all the link once the CS is up and open.

•If you have questions, feel free to tag me on Discord!

locations;

MONROEVILLE
A moderately-sized city of approximately 400,000 residents that sits nestled in the heart of the Monroe mountains.
It is connected to the outside world by two major highways, as well as a rail line that offers a few passenger trains in and out of Monroeville weekly. There is also a small commercial airport, but it doesn't see much usage outside of shipments and personal aircraft.

Although fairly isolated from any surrounding civilization, Monroeville makes up for this fact by offering all the modern amenities one could hope to find in a city its size. With a major college, state-of-the-art hospital and ample assortment of restaurants, entertainment venues and tourism destinations, residents hardly need to visit the world beyond its famous mountains.

Unfortunately for them, however, the unique layout and impassible surroundings make escaping Monroeville’s infested streets far more difficult than your average city.

CITY CENTER
The most immediately iconic area of Monroeville and seen in many postcards, its glossy skyscrapers and modern architecture made a remarkable sight up against their picturesque mountain backdrop. It also served as the main hub of activity for Monroeville, housing both the college and hospital as well as many of the entertainment venues, apartment complexes and public transportation options.

Red Plague began its spread here, pouring from the hospital and out into the heavily-populated surrounding area. Due to the sheer number of people and crowded public transportation methods, it spread like wildfire and brought the entire area to a standstill in a matter of hours.

Monroeville Memorial Hospital
A huge state-of-the-art hospital with an appealing modern design and a reputation for offering the highest quality of care. It partnered with the nearby college to offer an ideal learning experience for the medical students in attendance and also housed a low cost clinic for less urgent cases.

Ground zero for the now infamous Red Plague, Monroeville Memorial Hospital soon became nothing more than a blood-soaked morgue seething with armies of hungry corpses. Multiple early attempts at quarantine by both hospital staff and the military failed miserably, with the involved parties being killed in the chaotic shootings or turned despite their protective gear. It is commonly believed that no one working or residing there on the day of the apocalypse survived.
Undeniably the most dangerous location in the entire city, no one would even think of trying to scavenge any of the equipment or medications housed within, unless they were truly desperate...

Monroeville College
A world-class education facility offering a dizzying array of career options ranging from medical to creative and then some. Located less than five minutes from the hospital and at the center of the public transportation hub, it's conveniently located no matter what you're studying and surrounded by a variety of appealing restaurants and nightlife.

The second place to fall to the Plague, it gave way to hordes of undead and the ensuing military clean-up crew almost as quickly as the hospital itself. Those who were smart escaped as soon as they heard gunfire and chaos coming from within the hospital, and may have survived. For the more curious students, it would serve as either a final resting place, or, ahem, a turning point.
While severely infested, brave souls or those with a death wish might be able to salvage valuable material and perhaps even weapon-making supplies here...

Monroeville Markets
A large and mainly open-air market composed of booths, stalls and maze-like pathways, the Markets served as a cultural melting pot and unique shopping experience for Monroeville’s more adventurous residents. Offering everything from authentically prepared and exotic cuisine to trinkets from around the globe and even a few oddities, it attracted plenty of artsy types and a few budget-conscious ones as well.

Crowded and slightly confusing to navigate at the best of times, the Markets were overrun in less than an hour. While most fell to military gunfire or the jaws of the undead, many lost their lives in a mass trampling as well… some of which promptly reanimated.
Although seemingly a decent choice for those looking to loot or stock up on supplies before hitting the road, it remains so overrun with walking corpses that any would-be raiders will quickly join their ranks.

Monroeville Mall
Carrying everything from the latest trends in fashion to hippie-chic home decor, overpriced groceries and even some seriously outdated CDs, the mall was one of the more varied shopping locations and also served as a hangout for local youth.

Being in the heart of Monroeville, it didn't take long for this oddly laid out building to be overtaken by infected and then torn apart by military gunfire.
While perhaps slightly less saturated with rot than some of the locations above, its many small stores and hallways make it a risky endeavour nonetheless. Still, it has almost anything one could possibly want…

Monroeville Railway Station
While most of Monroeville’s traffic both entered and exited via one of the two major highways running throughout the city, its railway offered a more luxurious and old-fashioned method of transportation. Not particularly thrilling to most, the station did offer a small convenience store for travellers hoping to find a snack or souvenir.

By the time people realized they needed to get out of Monroeville as quickly as possible, the station had already cancelled all incoming and outbound trains and was shut down by the government-ordered quarantine. It's believed a few contaminated individuals made it onto the last train, although this has not been confirmed.
Anyone hoping to catch a ride or raid the tiny store should really think twice, because it's overrun with soldiers who want nothing more than to clean up and bury Monroeville… its residents included. That is, unless the corpses already got to them…

SUBURBIA
Surrounding much of the city center, suburbia offered a safe and slower-paced environment ideal for the growing family or elderly couple. It housed many of Monroeville’s schools, as well as a senior’s home and a few family-run restaurants.

While not as overrun with undead or military operations as the city center, suburbia hardly fared better in the long run. Many useful resources can be found here, but this has caused dangerous gangs and groups of survivors to leave the downtown and stake out a claim on the place… though even they are not immune to the many shambling Plague victims that wander here.

Identical Houses
It wouldn't be suburbia if anyone decorated their place uniquely, you know. Ranging from middle-of-the-road to reasonably expensive, these streets and houses aren't very remarkable, but they are rather homey if you're into that kind of thing.

Chock full of valuable supplies like cars, clothing and food, and spread out enough that a very sneaky survivor might be able to gather items with minimal undead or military disturbance, raiding any of these identical buildings is still quite dangerous. The area has become overrun with powerful gangs and bands of looters, with some homes serving as their hideouts. Most of the original residents either died, turned or fled in the panic, but a few remain who are most likely armed and not exactly willing to share their shelter or resources.
Hiding out here temporarily is feasible, but it's too easily accessible by roving bands of undead or military to serve as a long-term base.

Monroeville Elementary
A reasonably modern elementary school with a nice playground.

Not much of use can be found here, but it could possibly be used as a temporary hideout…

Monroe Mountain High School
A pleasant-looking high school… that is, if high schools could be pleasant.

Offering a few more resources than the elementary school with its cafeteria and nurse’s office, it's still not the greatest source of supplies; although some science equipment can be found here…

Whispering Aspens Retirement Home
Rather bland and a bit gloomy in appearance with its dull bricks and small windows, Whispering Aspens is not a particularly nice place although it serves its purpose just fine.

Probably the most dangerous and undead overrun area in the suburbs, it's hardly worth the risk considering no one is particularly fond of prunes or bingo to begin with… although if you'd like to see your granny eat your grandpa, well, this would be the place to do it.

OUTSKIRTS
One of the more natural and beautiful areas located at the foothills of the Monroe Mountains, the outskirts of Monroeville offer plenty of nature-themed tourist attractions as well as a few upscale hotels and a moderately sized homeowner community.

While not as severe or quick-spreading as the original outbreak in the hospital due to its more isolated location, the hotel here played host to Monroeville’s second major outbreak of Red Plague and was soon overrun by corpses and a somewhat smaller, but still deadly military presence.

Monroe Valley Hotel
The premier destination for celebrities, politicians and your average filthy rich individual, this high-priced hotel prided itself on offering guests a new level of relaxation and luxury. Highlights included a saltwater pool, five star restaurant and even its own movie theatre.

Monroe Valley Hotel cannot lay claim to being the official ground zero, although it's believed this is where the now-infamous first patient was exposed to Red Plague. Hours after the city center was shut down by its growing pandemic, a second outbreak began inside the luxurious hotel and spread swiftly through the surrounding areas.
While full of the finer things in life (or undeath), raiding this location would be nearly as foolish as the hospital… oh, and watch out for those zombified bellhops and spa goers.

Mountain Breeze Outdoor Store
Your one-stop shop for all things hunting, fishing and camping, with reasonable prices to boot!

One of the few seriously infested places worth the risk of scavenging, this large store contains all the guns, knives and outdoor supplies any apocalypse survivor could possibly want. Of course, being near the hotel, one will have to be on guard for masses of the undead as well as hostile military patrols that may regularity sweep the area.

Mike’s Trailer and RV Place
Offering a variety of RVs and trailers for every budget and group size, you're sure to find the camping apparatus of your dreams at Mike’s.

For those who’re gifted at hotwiring or already in possession of a truck or van capable of towing a trailer, Mike’s could offer a great option for refuge until a larger and more permanent base camp can be claimed, as well as serving as extra housing when one is located. Just beware of the alarm system… the undead are attracted to loud noises.

The Black Family Camp
Nestled on a steep hill right before the nearly sheer face of the mountainside begins; and about as far from Monroeville as one can get without a highway, plane or train, this spacious yet rustic lodge owned by Lexi’s aunt and uncle even has its own well, generator and vegetable garden.

Far enough away and hidden from the prying eyes of the military should you manage to slip past them, this location is still close enough to the site of the second outbreak to attract some undead in the days following the pandemic. If fortified and well-guarded however, it would make a rather good hideout…

DOWNTOWN
The seedy side of Monroeville that few choose to acknowledge, Downtown offers low-cost accommodations, lots of questionable activities and a great place to pawn that jewelry you borrowed a while back too. Most of the buildings here are run down and low income, with many being abandoned or even burned out.

Surprisingly one of the later areas to be completely overtaken, Monroeville’s downtown made up for it by combining the pandemic with its usual mass of criminal and just plain unpleasant activity. Traversing it will require the same amount of vigilance towards undead armies and the murderous military as any other location, but now with gangs and hardened criminals thrown in.

Aunt Gussie’s Frill-Free Motel
If money is an issue and health violations are not, then do we have the place for you! As long as you pay her, dear old Aunt Gussie won't tell anyone what she's seen you do… just be sure to treat yourself for lice, bedbugs and at least three strains of yet undiscovered bacteria before you leave, and tip well if you've been partaking in some of the more… shifty things found here.

Disgusting to begin with, the apocalypse hasn't been kind to this already collapsing mess of a motel. Ancient florals and filthy carpeting are now stained with blood and brain matter as well as whatever was on them before, but don't worry, Aunt Gussie won't be sharing anything now whether you tip or not…

On Strike! Bowling Alley
Run down and looking post-apocalyptic well before the Red Plague ever broke out, there is some nostalgic charm here, no, seriously… it just needs a really good cleaning.

There isn't much of particular value here aside from a small snack bar with chips and drinks, but hey, if you want to go bowling for zombies…

Casey’s Surplus and Gun Shop
Totally legal, we promise!

Perhaps the most useful store in the downtown area, a large variety of both legal and illegal weaponry can be found here, as well as valuable items like dried food rations, ATVs and bulletproof clothing. It's a hotspot for regular scavengers and gangs alike however, so the undead may be the least of your worries in this location…

Low Rent Apartments
For those who can't afford the luxuries of Monroeville’s city center, these rather plain and unsightly buildings offer a budget-friendly alternative.

A mainstay of criminals and addicts, the buildings also housed plenty of normal people before the outbreak.
Now, they offer a large amount of basic resources, although the many hiding spots and lack of any easily accessible exits on the higher floors make looting extremely risky in this infection-riddled area.

•••

That's all for now, but if you have a location you'd like added, let me know and I’ll see if it fits in!

lore;

The Red Plague
The disease known as ‘The Red Plague’ is not well understood by doctors or scientists as the severity of the outbreak has made any study of it almost impossible.

It is spread most directly by a bite wound from an infected individual, though it can also be transmitted through a deep scratch or puncture if infected material manages to enter the wound. It is not believed to be fully airborne, although it could possibly be spread via airborne particles of saliva or blood if they manage to make contact with a wide and fresh wound.

Transmission
A major wound, like a direct bite to the neck or anywhere with major arteries would cause the victim to turn within an hour, and quite possibly much sooner.
A bite or other infected wound in less vital areas may take longer, perhaps up to six hours at the most, but usually one or two.
Minor exposures, where only a small amount of the infection is introduced, could take days to fully turn the individual. For this reason, they're considered to be the most dangerous of all.

Pre-turning symptoms
As mentioned above, bites to major areas of the body would turn too quickly to display any obvious symptoms.
In those who do have enough time between initial infection and turning, the symptoms below may be observed:

•Headache (severe)
•Fever
•Confusion
•Agitation
•Speech problems
•Serious bruising from minor injuries
•Unexplained aggression
•Intense hunger
•Involuntary shaking and/or twitching
•Bleeding from the nose and gums
•Coughing up blood
•Milky or glazed eyes

If you witness an individual displaying any of these symptoms, it's common knowledge to dispatch them immediately or risk further contamination should they turn before being put down.

Dealing with Infection
Red Plague has no cure and no treatments. Anyone confirmed to be infected is to be put down immediately as per government orders. Those believed to be exposed should be monitored intensely until they are confirmed as either infected or healthy. To dispatch an infected, aim for the head… anywhere else will only slow them down at best.
Many lives were lost before this fact became widely known.

Immunities?
Some say that there are a very small number of people who are either somewhat or fully immune to the Red Plague, although no proof of these claims exist.

Supposedly, less than one percent of the population is naturally immune and will not display any symptoms from an infected bite, while two or three percent will experience the expected bleeding, headache, bruising, fever and general malaise, but without any worsening, neurological symptoms or risk of transmission so long as they remain alive.
If one of these carriers were to die, they would be overtaken by the disease and indistinguishable from a regular undead victim.

Patient Zero
The official information on Monroeville’s patient zero will likely never be known, but it is believed to be a controversial political figure who was attacked by either a government agency or terrorist group; purposely being infected with the unknown agent that came to be called Red Plague.

The Outbreak
It first began in Monroeville General Hospital, spreading outwards towards the college and city center within hours. A separate outbreak began on the other side of Monroeville in the hotel that had been hosting the politician, which made its way through suburbia and then towards the downtown. More in-depth details of this day remain unknown, as very few witnesses survived this initial wave.

Known Mutations
More research on this subject is required… check back soon.
