YUGEN -
“a profound, mysterious sense of the beauty of the universe… and the sad beauty of human suffering.”

In a world where the Waking Realm (Ametsuchi) and the Floating World (Ukiyo) are tied so closely together, it is the fate of the Onmyoujis - those who can walk in between worlds - to keep the balance. With a constructed bond, a metaphoric red thread, keeping a being from Ukiyo and Ametsuchi anchored together in union, together they could seal off malicious Yokai who've infiltrated the Waking Realm, or escort the lost back to Ukiyo.

This is the story of two onmyoujis and how they marked themselves in Kai's history.

Fifth period is where Kohana Maouri learns the Ancient history of Feudal Japan, taught by the school's eye-candy teacher. She sits in the second last row near the wide window planes. Her hands continue the circular motion which fills one of the pages in her notebook with spirals. She's listening, or at least, trying her best to listen, and failing miserably. She's watching little walking balls tiptoe and balance themselves on the edge of the window plane. They're carrying something on their back and Kohana tries desperately hard to remember what the spirits were named.

Kosenjobi? No, those were fireballs. Susuwatari? That can't be right. Susuwatari were sootball spirits. The ones on the window plane resembled something more like clay.

"...And that marks the day where they laid siege on the castle. Can anyone tell me how long it took before the army invaded?" the teacher's voice raises in question.

Kohana straightens in her seat, mentally smacking herself to focus. She glances at the clock.

Remises or Remmy slouches in his chair leaning back with his right resting a top of the chair. He gave a stoic face peering at his journal full of sketches of monsters he's encountered. Little notes posted on the side of his well sketched doodles. His pen darkening the outline to give it more detailed look. He never did pay attention to school work or anything really. He always had a look of being lost in his own mind. Why? Well it was mostly a question that keep replaying in his mind and everyday searched for the answer. The brunette hums low, red eyes focused on his sketch rather than the teacher's lectures. He had the option to skip class and head up to the rooftops, but he didn't want to get lectured by his guardian. He wasn't around very often but still, he was as close as a parent as he would get.

The class bell rings signalling the end of class and luckily the class stayed quiet enough before the teacher could call on any names to answer his question. He reminds them that their report on Hashigawa Castle is due next week before wiping the white board clean of today's notes.

Kohana slings her bag over her shoulder and instead of exiting the classroom, she skips her way towards the windows, startling the little spirits when she opens the window up. Her eyes briefly glance over at Remmy Suzuki, a classmate who bears the same spiritual presence as herself: the aura of an onmyouji.

They never spoke much but she has encountered him in her dealings with spirits enough times for them to be well-acquainted. Though, she's never met the yokai he's bonded with. She shrugs off the thought as she prods a finger at the little clay spirit.

If she was a normal human being, it would've gone straight through them.

Raiva had never been someone big on school and educational facilities. The dealings with human society and their rules had never been something the ex-god meddled in but after the spiritual binding with Remmy Suzuki, the tengu had grown to learn the importance of "studies". Choosing to respect the young male's time, Raiva only made himself present during lunch breaks and after classes.

The few times he actually came to disturb class were under emergency circumstances. Unknown to most, Kohei High School had a lot of mishaps with troublesome spirits.

"Yo," Raiva greeted, floating over to Remy. He chose today not to take a physical form and instead remained invisible to normal humans.
