The gods and goddesses of Greek mythology in all their immortal and overwhelming glory died out thousands of years ago due to the believe in them slowly but steadily fading away, vanquishing them form human consciousness and leaving them forgotten as only myths to entertain the future generations. After all, what are the deities without believers to speak of their magnificence, to worship them, to fear them...? Nothing, only a powerless figment of one's imagination.
And yet, the all-powerful beings have been reincarnated for their time has come, as well as have taken on a human form, that bares some of their formal power and fame. And so, these "chosen ones" are burdened with the task to bring forth the death of this age since there never existed an "end of time" or "end of the world" but rather phases that have both a beginning and a finish. The current one is approaching its demise, though it must be carried out by the deities. After all, this is their faith, their history:
Golden Age - Cronus was overthrown by Zeus.
Silver Age - The humans had forgotten and ignored the gods, so Zeus sent a flood to destroy all of mankind.
Bronze Age - Humans engaged in war with bronze weapons and thus killed each other
Iron Age - Is now, when all honour has been lost.
