I'm pretty sure the neighbor's place is filled with shadow demons from the Realm of Misery, banished here by the Ancient Ones of Vellior.
Either that or a bunch of black scribbles.

If Paul were aware about the audience's thoughts about the apartment blueprints, he would've pointed out that doors in blueprints are *always* drawn in an opened state, so that the direction in which they open can be seen.
If things went even further and he were to be aware of the fact that he was in an interactive storyline, he would've pointed out that the black scribbles in the neighbour's apartment most likely were a stylistic choice by the author to indicate either the unimportance of the inner layout of that particular apartment, or the fact that Paul had never seen the inside of his neighbour's apartment, and therefore wouldn't know about the layout in the first place.
But Paul was neither of these things, so the only thing he could do was to sit down in front of his computer...
...turn on the monitor...
...and discover something horrifying:
Windows XP.

There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the files stored on the system - while Paul can't quite remember everything he had on his PC, there's nothing really out of place, nor does he feel anything really important is missing.
The recycle bin is completely empty.
As his computer doesn't seem to contain any information that might help him figuring out the situation, Paul decides to consult the internet instead.
