OVERCAST: MARTIAL LAW

    0300, Sunday

Two hours ago, on the outskirts of the Stagg Range training site, Major Nyle briefed C Company (31 Btn) on the situation. The unknown pathogen continues to spread, and the riots from yesterday have escalated significantly. The death toll is estimated to have already reached the thousands. A province-wide state of emergency has been declared by the governor, and he has authorized the deployment of the Civil Guard reservists to assist the civilian authorities with containment.

Thankfully, most of your platoon was already present due to the weekend exercise that had been occurring around Stagg. A few stragglers who had written memos to skip the weekend still showed up tonight in their personal vehicles after the domestic deployment callup, though a few men are still absent. Still, your platoon is more or less at full strength.

C Company has been ordered by Battalion to deploy to the outskirts of Sawyer, spreading out from Stagg to the nearby communities. The other companies are primarily focusing on containment and assistance in the city. As 3 Platoon commander, you and your men have been dispatched to the small town of Merrenow.

    -Enter the municipality Merrenow
    -Make contact with local authorities
-Distribute face masks and "health risk notice" leaflets
    -Encourage civilians to remain indoors
-Attempt to look for signs of infection in the municipality
-Detain the sick in a secure area (look for bloody wounds, coughing, fever, confusion)
    -Document any missing persons
    -Use proper escalation of force
-Wear chemsuits + gas masks at all times
-Attempt to accomplish these objectives in less than 24 hours

Your reservists are mounted on their vehicles, and are currently approaching Merrenow from Highway 40.

You are seated as the passenger in Alpha Jeep, with Pfc. Thow as driver, and Pvt. Martekey riding on the back with his burst rifle at the ready. The local concrete plant looks deserted, and a few of the small houses in the country look like they've been burned since yesterday. It's 3 AM, but a few civilian vehicles are on the road, heading in the opposite direction. They pull over to the shoulder of the road upon the sight of your convoy. Unless stopped, a few of them continue on after you've passed, leaving Merrenow through Highway 40 (no quarantine has been declared yet). At least 3 vehicles turn back around and begin to follow your convoy back towards town, perhaps reassured to stay by the arrival of a military presence.

You can choose when and where to disembark and begin the stability operation. Officer Hayman of the County Police has forwarded you a list of local responders, and says that he and his crew are currently maintaining a safe area in the field just above the Fire Department, and just south of the Toolshops. He says that there have been sporadic instances of looting and violence, and many people are not indoors.

Lieutenant Graves sighs as he goes over the orders a fifth time. He mused to himself about how wise it was to enlist in the Civil Guard, and looked over the entirety of Charlie Company.

"Driver, take us to the police station. For the time we're here, it will be acting as our 'headquarters'. Nobody should get too comfortable, we'll be gone onto our next objective by tomorrow."

He keys the vehicle's comms system to the squad leaders. "This is Lieutenant Graves to Hoskins, Burkhart, Salwell and Redmond, when we reach our field HQ, I want all four of your squads covering one quarter of Merrenow. I'll direct the civilian assets as they can be of assistance. Report in if you need assistance, or if anything unusual occurs, out."

He uncomfortably adjusts his rifle and stares out the window as the platoon rumbles on toward its AO.

Your squad leaders copy.

A few lights turn on in the houses, figures appearing to gawk at the convoy as it rolls past. Other houses remain dark... though, one has the lights on, but with blood and heavy cracks splashed across all the windows.

"This is already fucked," you hear Private Martekey murmur from the back, his rifle kept at a threat-ready stance. The bug eyes on his gas mask already looked fogged from his heavy breaths.

As your convoy draws close to the intersection near the Merrenow Inn hotel, the street is blocked by a multi-vehicle collision. Blood slicks the asphalt, car doors hang open, and windshields are smashed out. A few dead bodies are laying among the broken glass, looking far more damaged than is reasonable for a 50 KM zone.

Cpl. Bercier, driver of the lead vehicle, Humveee Alpha, radios in. "3, this is 3-1 Minor, uhh... we got five cars here, three civilian casualties so far. We offering assistance? Either way, those vehicles gotta be moved. Over."

Graves rolls his eyes behind his kit.

"Bigman 3 Actual acknowledges 3-1 minor. 3-1 Actual, take your squad and investigate."

"Bigman 3 Actual to 3-2 Actual, assist 3-1 with clearing a path."

He switches from a channel and open broadcasts.

"Bigman 3 Actual to all Bigman 3 elements, remember to broadcast the health and safety recording while we're here. I want everyone to stay sharp."

Graves then takes another moment to attempt to hail the local PD.

"Attention Merrenow PD, this is Lieutenant Graves of the 31st Battalion Civil Guard. What is your status, over?"

Unfortunately, none of the vehicle have loudspeakers. You'll have to find a megaphone.

After you call upon the squads, the men begin to hop out of their respective vehicles. Martekey and Thow contact Sgt. Hoskins and let him know that they're still with the platoon commander's vehicle.

The squads approach the collision site, nervously surveying the bloody corpses on the road. Two male, one female. All adults. It's quickly determined that the victims are deceased, and they're dragged off to the sidewalk and covered with a tarp. A few soldiers push the abandoned vehicles out of the thoroughfare. Your men report that someone is still in one of the cars, but is covered in blood, foaming at the mouth, and pounding on one of the windows.

The voice of a county cop replies; "This is Officer Hayman. We're holding by the parking lot of the fire station, along with the local EMTs and firefighters. We've got maybe forty... maybe fifty civilians here, a lot of them are wounded. Most of these folks need masks, too. We could do with a little help over here, over."

Graves keys to the platoon comm.

"All Bigman elements, regroup at the PD. Begin distributing masks. Medic, I want you to assist the EMTs with processing wounded civilians. After we have handled this matter squad leaders are to move to these designated coordinates and pursue our objectives from there. If the squad leaders feel their assigned area has been sufficiently handled, move on to another unclaimed area or assist the nearest squad."

Graves thinks for a few moments.

"Ben, once we're done here I'm going over to the City Hall, see if I can speak to any civilians gathered there. I want you to take a volunteer from each squad, and the local police to investigate the train yard, be sure quarantine is being followed."

"This is Officer Hayman to Civil Guard. Where are you going? We saw you drive past on 40th."

"3, this is platoon medic. Who am I going with, sir?" Soldiers generally aren't sent anywhere alone.

Your men choose to leave the rabid figure in the back of the car after not being prompted to do anything.

With the thoroughfare clear, your convoy rolls through. The police station up ahead has the lights on inside. Your men find a woman with a shotgun hiding behind the counter at the front. She's identified as a civilian member of the station's desk staff.

Your men begin to consolidate. 4 men are left behind at the station, while the other squads begin to move to their denoted positions.

After a moment of re-considering, Graves sighs in an irritated fashion.

"Third Platoon, relocate to assist the locals at the fire department."

He then turns to the SFC.

"Ben, scrap that mission."

He comms Officer Hayman.

"I have a squad moving to assist, where are you isolating the ill at the moment?"
