Fantasy Of Fire and Ice [Completed]

Idren was nervous at how she would respond, but when she laughed a little he grew more comfortable. "Not true, I know a great many that have gone into the woods and come back. Granted it is only about a 25% return rate... Also why are you suddenly so nervous, why is it important that I go home?" Idren asked thinking he knew the answer. She didn't tell anybody she was leaving and they are going to think I took her...

Catalina's cheeks grew a little red. "I didn't exactly share with my family that I was going wandering in the woods that we are forbidden to enter. And if they could looking for me, my footprints will eventually lead them here." She paused, and gave a sighed, letting go of his forearm.
"That uldean made a lot of noise, there is a good chance they heard it and will come looking in the woods tomorrow anyway.." She couldn't find the right words to say it all. "They're already on edge, okay? And if they come looking for me int he woods, thinking that I got attacked by one of those beast, and instead find me shacked up with an ice-bringer in a booby-trapped cave.." Catalina hesitated, and then decided to give it to him cold. "They will incinerate you before they even consider asking questions. And that doesn't seem like a good thing for the fragile peace we have had for the last few hundred years."

"Good news, chances are it wouldn't start a war because nobody would come looking for me." Idren replied a little sarcastically. "Bad news, I really don't want to die." Idren was looking a little sad. He did not want to say goodbye to her, and he certainly didn't want to be alone in the woods anymore after what happened with the uldean. "So how about I walk you back to close to home and by then it'll be daylight and I'll head home."

"It would make more sense for me to walk you to home." Catalina stated flatly, looking at him like he was an idiot. "Since you're the one that is put in mortal danger by the uldean? I mean, I could hold a flame and run and be fine, but you.." She trailed off pointedly and pursed her lips together. But once her point was made, she nodded.
"Knowing when to leave is the tricky part. Too soon, and the uldean will still be out. Too late, and people will already be in the woods" She considered this, her brows pulling together in an almost-pout. She appeared to be trying to remember something that was deep, deep in her memory.

"Okaayyy... So when do we leave? And are we heading towards my home or yours?" Idren didn't really care which way they went, so long as neither of them died. "You look deep in thought, is there anything you want to share with the class." Idren said with a little laugh.

She ignored his little joke, almost looking annoyed by it. "There's a star.. there's a certain star.." She sighed, cursing herself to not paying more attention to things in class. "There is a certain star, when it disappears the uldean return to the city ruins. They move fast, so if we left shortly after the star disappears, we would be fine... but I can't.." She ran a hand through her auburn hair. "I can't remember which star it is."

"That would be Mountain Star." Idren said bluntly. "At Least I would guess it would be."
Idren paused for a moment before continuing, "On the northern edge of the forest there is a single mountain. And there is a bright star just on the horizon that fades about an hour ish before dawn. That is when the uldean go back to their home... I think"
Idren stood there and waited for her response, hoping she would agree with him.

Catalina stared at him for a moment, and then nodded. It would seem that the ice-bringers still had some awareness of the dangers of the forest, even if they didn't know exactly what they were anymore.
"The Mountain Star.." She repeated, and then nodded. "We'll leave when it fades, and get you home before my people kill you." She said, and then glanced at the entrance. "It will be soon."

They waited for a few more hours mostly in silence. Idren even dosed off a bit. Just as the first sliver of light started to appear Idren stood and walked over to the mirror wall.
"Stay here, I'll be right back. Just going to take a peek." And before Catalina could protest he placed his hand on the wall, it shimmered a little bit and he walked right through it. Idren was gone for only a few seconds when the wall shimmered again and he stepped back through.
"The star has faded, shall we go?" Idren asked with a smile.

Catalina cycled between watching him, and watching his rune-wall, all night. She was amazed that he managed to sleep, after almost being consumed by an uldean.
Her eyes were on him when he woke up, and she quickly looked back over to the wall. He went out before she could say anything, and when he came back she nodded mutely. As she stood, she grimaced; her body was not a fan of long cold nights in a stone cave. Her shoulder popped when she swung her arms above her head and stretched.
Then, she gave him a small smile and spoke, her voice husky from tiredness. "Make sure you disable all these runes before we go," She said, and then she bent to tighten her boots. "Then let's get you out of here."
She reached back and pulled her hair up, securing it tightly in a bun with a ribbon from around her wrist. There were bags under her eyes and dirt streaked across her face, obscuring her freckles, but at least her hair wasnt a mess.

"Leta" Idren said as he clapped his hands. And as he did the detection, trap, and attack runes all sizzled to life but then faded. Not even a mark was left where they once were. Idren collected his things and walked over to the wall.
"Time to go" he said with a smile
He then placed his hand on the wall and again whispered Leta, and the wall melted from the top down till it was all gone.
Idren smiled at Catalina then turned and walked out the cave.

Catalina stepped out of the cave cautiously out of the cave, glancing left and right before looking up. Her eyes ran over the stars, and then she paused. In the moment it took her to think, her body reminded her of how horribly cold and stiff she was.
With her eyes still on the sky, she spoke. "It will be best to head directly to the edge of the forest, instead of making straight for your city. Quicker, less chance of getting lost." She looked at him, and then starter walking, taking a trail that lead up around the cliff edge of the waterfall. Once on top of it, she looked up again, and then followed an imaginary line down before starting in that direction.
Even though she was walking at a good pace, and the snow added a little extra effort, her body didnt warm up, and she found herself shivering for the first time in her life. "What were you doing out here anyway, Idren?"

Idren followed Catalina up the cliff nodding in agreement at her suggestion.
"I could ask you the same thing." Idren said with a smile.
"I came out here because I could and because I wanted to." Idren paused for a moment the sucked in a quick breath. "Actually.... I was looking for something... A blue crystal, that supposedly amplifies ice power. It was what powered our field defences and war engines back in the great war. It was lost to us in one of the final battles, and if someone can find it they would be able to activate the cities old powers again. Running water, magical repair, detection systems crop growth enchantments and so on." Idren paused for a moment with a sad look on his face. "Most people struggle with life, if you can believe it last winter we had a couple of people freeze to death."
Idren snapped out of the sadness that had begun weighing him down. "Are you cold? Because you look cold." Before she could answer he took off his jacket and held it out to her. "Trust me I'm not about to freeze. Take it."

Catalina listened quietly to what he was saying; her brain absorbed it even though it didnt register at that moment. Her teeth had started to chatter, which was the strangest thing that had ever happened to her. In the back of her mind, it registered that something had happened when he cooled her down, but if fire-keepers knew what it was, they didn't teach it in school.
When he asked if she was cold, she didnt have the pride left to insist she wasnt, she just nodded, and took the offered jacket. She wrapped it around her shoulders; the weight was comforting, and she could feel his leftover heat radiating from it.
"I th-think.." She murmured, and then spoke up a little louder. "I think.. somethings wrong. I shouldnt b-be cold-d." Her gray eyes lifted from the ground to his face, and she felt the earth lurch a little. Catalina's features grew soft, like when she held her best friend's baby, and then there was nothing but blackness. She didn't even feel herself fall.

Idren watched her take the coat and noticed how much it seemed to help. But it only seemed to help for a few seconds. Catalina started stuttering coldly. Then her eyes rolled in the back of her head. Idren had just enough time to grab her and guide her to the ground before she went totally limp.
"Catalina... Catalina!! Wake up!!" She was shivering almost uncontrollably but she didn't open her eyes as Idren called out to her and shook her.
Idren closed his eyes and forced himself to calm down. One of two things happened. Either A she used to much power fighting the uldean and she is dieing. Or B when I cooled her down it helped but now it is still having an effect and she is dieing. Either way I have no idea how to help...
Idren looked at her and placed a had on her forehead. His face changed from sadness to surprise to worry all in two seconds. He could no longer feel her fire. She was cold.
Idren looked out over the trees and from the cliff that they were on he could almost see the tallest tower of his city. But they wouldn't be able to help her...
He looked back the way they had come knowing that if he could get her their maybe they could save her but his chances would be slim...
Then it hit him, I don't need to walk her into the city, I'll just backtrack her steps and run right into the group of people looking for her. Then maybe they would let me leave in exchange for giving them her. So with determination he wrapped her up in his blanket and coat, picked her up, and started walking back the way they came.

Zuko Smoke stared coldly at his wife, who stared defiantly back. "How could you let her stay out all day, let alone all night?" He snapped. He banged a fist on their kitchen counter. "We could have searched for her before dusk, now for all you know shes been consumed by an uldean, you witch!" His voice was thunderous as he shouted.
Sereen Smoke glared at the man. "She's an adult, she makes her own choices. She wouldn't be your responsibility if you married her off like you should have a year ago." The woman turned away and went back to her cooking, but there were tears pricking her eyes.
Zuko growled and stormed out of the house. By banging on only a few doors, he was able to gather a sufficient search party of his six strongest men. They hurried across the snow, and then paused as a group at the same imaginary line that Catalina had only 24 hours sooner. And then they plunged into the forest, following her tiny footprints.
Her father lead the group, and before too long, they had tracked her footprints to the tree she had been climbing in. It was clear from the ground that there had been a scuffle between her and someone much larger. It appeared she had initially run away, but there was a set of her tracks leading back to the trampled area, and then away, with a continuous two lines beside them...

Catalina grumbled a little as she was lifted, and her body instinctively drew closer to his warmth. Funny, that an ice-bringer would be giving her warmth. She was very distantly aware of the sensation of being carried, but in her mind there played a strange scene. A beautiful crystal nestled in bright purple cloth, then the clashing of swords, and finally the shriek of an uldean with a bright flash of pure white light.[

Idren only had to walk for a few minutes before making it back to the cave they had spent the night in. He set Catalina down and pulled the blanket away from her face a little. She was still shivering but at least she was alive "Feeling any better?" He asked
But he didn't wait for a response, because he could feel it again, the heat. But it was not coming from her but from outside. Idren walked to the mouth of the cave and saw about 5 to 7 men walking twords the cave, and they were all armed.
Well this was just about the dumbest idea I have ever had...
Seeing that they would see him if he left the cave he decided to go back inside and actually check on Catalina
"Help for you is here, don't go dieing now. One of us has to make it out of here." He shook her a little bit and called out to here again "Catalina.. Wake up"

They followed the trail; every one of them had their sword hand resting on the grip of their blade, and the other hand ready to attack with fire. Zuko lead the group, his face hard as stone. Being the important man that he was, he left raising the children to his wife, but he admired his daughter's tenacity and stubbornness, and had hoped she would be the first female chief in generations. Now she might be dead.
They reached a clearing near a stream, and the snow was so disturbed that dead grass could be seen in a few places. One of the men wandered away from the formation a few steps, looking at the ground. "Uldean tracks," He voiced, and the men all shifted. The tracks seemed to be concentrated to the side of a cliff next to the frozen waterfall. The edge of the cave wall could just be seen. Zuko squared his shoulders and prepared himself before moving forward and melting away enough of the waterfall for him and his men to enter.

Catalina felt the outside heat of the blanket against her skin, and it brought her a little awareness. When she was shook, she was able to rouse herself enough to open her eyes. "Cold.." She murmured, and looked pleadingly at Idren. For the first time in her life, she found herself wanting her mom.

Zuko entered the cave first, with pairs of men following closely behind. It took a few seconds for him to process the sene before him. His daughter was laying on the cave floor, wrapped in a blanket, lips tinged blue with cold. There was a stranger crouched over her, and judging by his blonde hair and facial features, he was an ice-bringer. The anger that built up within him was almost as cold as the ice this stranger could control, and it could be heard in his voice.
The men beside him stepped forward to form a half-circle blocking the exit, and drew their blades. "Disarm him. And call the Council as soon as we get back. I need to care for my daughter." He spoke lowly to his men, without taking his eyes off of Idren. "Step away from her. Now." He ordered.

Idren looked up as they circled him. Then stood when he was told and took a step back. Idren then addressed the man that was clearly the leader and probably her dad. "Give me a second and let me explain, it is actually a very compelling story." Idren nervously smiled and retreated a little more into the cave.

"You need to go look for him!" Alreara snapped. A short women with long blond hair was standing in front of Idrens dad.
"He is still alive so he will be back." Yato said bluntly.
"Right he is alive and that is the problem. If he is alive and not back by now then something is wrong" she replied.
"That life stone doesn't allow me to track him, it just lets me know he is alive."
"Then what are you tracking with that scrying spell?"
"What scrying spell....?"
"The one you sneak off to do every hour"
"That is a me finding the location of the weapons I gave him..." He said with a defeated look.
"Exactly. So where is he and what is he doing."
"He meet a girl in the woods and they fought off an Uldean, now she is dying"
"So maybe you should go help them." she said shortly
"Fine, but before I go the least you could do is help me with one more scry"

Zuko glared at Idren when he spoke, and took the opportunity to go to Catalina when he retreated into the cave. She was wrapped up like a baby in an unfamiliar blanket and jacket, probably belonging to this ice-bringing fool. He reached out and touched her cheek, careful not to move the blanket around her. Her cheek was colder than the winter air. Zuko's face grew horribly grim, and he glanced back at his men before picking her up in his arms. The look on his face made his men bristle, and then stepped forward and grabbed Idren as Zuko turned to carry Catalina out of the cave.
The men stripped his weapons and his pack from him before he had a chance to fight or argue, and one of them bound his wrists behind his back. Within seconds, they were marching him out of the cave, behind a silent Zuko.

The group moved swiftly; Zuko lead the way through the forest with unmistakable certainty. They arrived at the village in half the time it had taken them to get out to the cave. Zuko didn't say a word to his men.

The village itself was in the shadow of a mountain range. It was one of those sudden mountain ranges, with only a few foothills. One of the foothills had the village at its top. Everything had been constructed in an ashy black stone, even the stone bridge that crossed the river at the bottom of the hill. A worn path zig-zagged up the side of the steep hill. This path turned into the main path through town, and on the other side, it lead into the mountains were their people hunted. The buildings were mostly squat, square homes, dotting the hill, but there was a denser part that served as the center of town. There were shop-buildings there, and a stone square for the market, as well as the imposing council building.

Zuko hurried silently off to a home at the edge of the village, one with runes along the door frame. He walked in without knocking, and a small puff of purple smoke snaked out the open door before it swung shut.

The six men escorting Idren took him into the center of the village, to the council building. This building was different from the others in that it was a circular shape, and it was clear that it used to be covered in carved runes, which were now weathered and hard to read. The front of the building had steps and a simple archway, but they dragged Idren around the side, and entered through a heavy door set into the stone. It swung inward to reveal a prison, and Idren was unceremoniously thrown into a cell. The men left quickly, without remembering to light a candle for Idren to see by.

Yato and Aleara sat down and started the simple scry spell, but when they locked onto the sword they did not see their son. They saw a man with short dark hair carrying Idrens stuff. So they widened their view. And the both took in a sharp breath when they saw their son bound and being lead east by a party of 6 fire keepers.
"Now are you going to go help him?" Aleara said with a troubled voice.
"I think I will" Yato said and he stood up and walked away without another word.
Being the head of the council it took Yato all of 20minutes to get 15 volunteers to go with him to the fire keeper village to help get his son back. And with all of them armed with their choices of staves, swords, shields and armor, the group marched off into the woods.

Zuko picked up his daughter and turned his back. "Or not, that's good too. The story can wait." Idren said as the half circle of men converged on him. Idren didn't even try to resist. Chances are he would louse in a fight to any one of them and there were five not including Zuko. So he gave up and just let them take his stuff. He did not help then but he did not resist, hoping that they would miss one rather important thing.
It was a short uncomfortable walk, even though it seemed like days to Idren. And he had no chance of escape, except for two things. Rescue by his people and his very special neckless that the men had overlooked.
As they approached the city he noted the big differences in the buildings. He was seeing black stone where his city even though it is run down and abandoned in some parts was made out of a white blue stone polished to near perfection once.
The men led him to a large tower looking building and went around and tossed him into a jail cell. They didn't even unbind his hands or light a candle. It took him about 20 minutes but he finally got his hands free with a freezing spell, and once frozen he was able to break the rope. Idren was concerned because the spell was extremely difficult to preform even though it was just about the simplest magic to preform. He then lit his hands up with blue light. but before he could get a good look at anything other than the bench in the cell and the iron bars blocking his escape, the lights went out....
What is going on... Why can't I use magic....
Frustrated he said, "Fine I'll do my spell in the dark."
Idren pulled he neckless off and on the end was a smooth stone that was the same white blue as the city he was from, and on the front and back were runes. The neckless was a one person one time hearthstone. When activated it would teleport him to right in front the fireplace at his house. Idren held the stone in his hand and muttered the activation spell. He could feel the magic rush into him and the spell took hold....
Now when one teleports it is actually just moving really really fast after being shrunk down to the size of an atom so you can pass through walls and such. But wile you can go through stone, you can't really go through warded stone such as the cell Idren is in.
Idren felt himself shrink but then next thing he knew he was flying into the ceiling, then very swiftly falling back down. He could tell the impact and then the fall had broken a rib and maybe an arm, but there could have been much worse injuries so he counted himself as lucky.
"That worked like a fart at the dinner table when mom is in a bad mood." Idren said to himself. It was then that he herd the alarms going off. Apparently the cell not only had warding to prevent magic but it also had an alarm that would sound if anything complex was attempted. The jail door opened and in walked two men. "This blows" Idren said with a defeated look.

A small gathering had formed outside of the strange little house where Catalina had been taken. There was a constant babble of conversation from inside, sometimes rising into shouts. Catalina's mother rushed by, parting the crowd in two, and disappeared into the house. Moments later, the sound of her wail dispersed the crowd quickly.

The two men that entered stared at Idren, and then one of them laughed. "The idiot thought he could poof himself right on out of here." The other began to laugh, and soon they were wiping tears off their face. They shook their heads and turned to leave, and one of them did remember to light a candle across from his cell. There was no sympathy from them; as far as they were concerned, this kid had killed the wild-but-golden girl of the town.

One of those two men walked all the way across the village, to the strange little home. He knocked, and a grumpy looking old man answered the door. "We're too busy to gossip," He snapped, but held the door open for a moment to let the man speak.
"The kid tried to escape, some kind of transporting spell, possibly a hearthstone." Zuko appeared in the doorway behind the short old man. "It failed, but the kid is probably injured."
Zuko's face darkened. "Good. Let him be in pain before his end," With that, Catalina's father disappeared again. The old man gave a humph, and the door was shut.

"Daddy.." Catalina's voice was barely a whisper. Zuko rushed to her side. "The guy.."
"Im here, Catalina, Im right here." He took hold of her hand. "We caught the boy trying to take you, he will be tried later, but dont worry about that now. Just get better."
Catalina slipped away again before she could say anything more, and the look the healer and Zuko shared was not good.

Idren sat there against the wall in a little bit of pain but allot a bit sad. Dad sent me off but I never told mom goodbye... Fresh out of options he started experimenting with what magic he could do. He found that anything that could be an attack just wouldn't work at all. Defense spells worked at about 25% effectiveness, and general magic was only minorly dampened, but would fail if it was used with any kind of force. So seeing no other option he started healing himself. It was slow and painful work, but it beat just sitting there with broken bones.

Yato and his party made it to the clearing that Idren and Catalina meet. "Everyone, take five" Yato said
"But sir every second we waist is another second he is a prisoner." said one of the men.
"True but what good will we be if we show up to rescue him then we all get killed because we are to tired to fight?.... Everybody take five."
Yato then sat down and started another scry to see how Idren was doing but he could not find his son....

The grumpy little old man bustled back and forth across the home, looking into books and scribbling runes onto pages of parchment. Every time he turned around, Zuko or Sereen was in his way. After almost knocking Sereen to the ground, the man slammed down his charcoal and glared at her. "Both of you, out!" He snapped. "I cannot work with you breathing down my neck every second." He shooed them toward the door, and then turned back to Catalina. "I will send word of her condition to the trial if something changes." It was a final dismissal, one they couldnt argue with.

They left the healer's home. Sereen went home, too angry with herself to be in public, and Zuko walked straight to the Council hall. The Council was already gathered. When Zuko walked in, Chief Eron looked at him critically before asking, "How is my heir doing?"
Zuko lowered his chin, and answered lowly, "She is unconscious. Quirr thinks.. he suspects that her inner fire has been frozen. He is unsure if she will live through the night." Chief Eron nodded, and indicated Zuko should sit.
"You understand you cannot be a part of this trial, Zuko. You are allowed in here as a courtesy." The Chief said this without looking at the man, but he saw him nod. With a wave of the chief's finger's, Idren's trial had begun.

The same two men that had laughed before came down the stairs at the opposite end of the prison, and unlocked Idren's cell. "On your feet. Try anything funny, and you die right here. Its time for your trial." They took him upstairs to the Council chamber, where he was sat in a chair facing the Chief, with Zuko at his right hand side.

"State your name," Chief Eron ordered. He was a shockingly calm presence, compared to the hostile looks every other councilman was giving him.

Idren had just finished healing himself when the door opened again. The same two men from before came in opened the cell door and led him to where the trial would be held. They sat him down in front of two people and one he recognized as Zuko
"I am Idren." Idren said with confidence. Even though he was very nerves he was determined to not let it show. And all the wile he never looked away from the man addressing him.
