History:

Shadow Ripper was born Kallan in Onyx on Darkmist Isle to a poor family. His life was ordinary enough, including a marriage at the age of fifteen to the smith from up the street, until he decided that he wanted to see more of the world. So he dragged his wife Cowrie along onto a ship that was leaving for the Coral archipelago. One of the other passengers was an Exalt of the Bodhisattva’s named Diplomat of Tearful Promises who looked upon his wife with desire and offered her unlife. Kallan naturally took exception to this and ended up on the deck with a mortal wound as Tearful Promises approached his wife. At that moment, Luna came to him and encouraged him to fight against the darkness that would consume the world, and life itself. He arose and wounded the Moonshadow diplomat, throwing him into the harbour and taking control of the ship.

In time, Kallan was found by the No Moons on the island where he had settled with his wife. The No Moon Swims in Shadow became his mentor as his wife struggled to adapt to life amongst the barbarians. Kallan felt pity for her and resolved that once he passed his initiation, he would teach her to adapt. But when he became Shadow Ripper and a No Moon, his days were full of learning as a natural leader and sorcerer.

It was much to his shock that his wife Exalted as a Solar of a Caste equivalent to the No Moons, and even more so when she decided to travel without him. These trips have caused arguments between the two, and even a sorcerous quarrel that left Shadow Ripper reeling in shock as his equally strong wife increased her physical strength and punched him clear across the clearing after countering one of his spells. For all of his speed, cunning and sorcerous know-how, his wife is able to counter anything he throws at her – and the other No Moons tell him that she will only grow in power as time goes on.

Shadow knows more spells than Brightness (the name she took) but she has a greater knowledge of Charms and knows spells that allow her to become even more mobile than him. This is rubbing at his masculine pride and some of the older No Moons are advising him to leave her. But Shadow isn’t minded to let ‘his’ wife walk away without a fight, and so he follows her wherever she goes.

Personality

Shadow Ripper is a leader through and through, and doesn’t understand why his wife, until now obedient, has suddenly developed a mind of her own. He likes her frequent trips and trading for luxuries even less and has attempted to correct her – until she physically beat the crap out of him. But like any good husband, he won’t let ‘his’ wife go astray – somehow, he will show her that his way is the right way.

Appearance

Shadow is a tall man with bronze skin, navy-blue hair and eyes of the same colour who has silver-coloured talons instead of nails on his fingers and toes. He wears siaka-hide that he got from beasts he hunted himself and carries a moonsilver short powerbow, and is followed everywhere by his sea-eagle familiar Haska.

NB: In canon, most Lunars and Solars who get together are either reincarnations of old partnerships or the First Age Lunar getting it on with his reincarnated mate. Shadow Ripper is what happens when a husband Exalts before his wife, drags her to the end of the world, sucks up the teachings of the Silver Pact and then wonders why his newly Solar wife is both pissed with him and able to kick his butt physically and sorcerously. In many ways, he is the most fun of the three connected characters, because he is the most powerful sorcerer of the lot of them, but in many ways the most vulnerable with his adherance to the Silver Pact and grudge with Diplomat of Tearful Promises.

Without Tearful Promises, Shadow Ripper would be a useful NPC in any Western or Lunar campaign, or even make another Solar a good spouse. :)
