i dreamed a dream
Hinata Maeko

Soft light streamed through 17 year old Hinata Maeko’s curtains. The sunlight was hitting her right on the face causing the young girl to stir in her sleep to try and get a few more minutes of sleep she pulled the soft quilt up and over her head but then the banging on her door and a voice shouting “Time to get up girls!” The voice rang out as the other four girls in the room gave a collective groan. This is what it was like growing up in care. Sharing a room with 4 other people while also being kept on a strict schedule that you would have to follow religiously in order to avoid punishment. Maeko felt like she was living in a military base rather than a care home.

Maeko threw the quilt off herself as she crawled to the ladder of the bunk bed as she climbed down still half asleep. At this time of day most of the girls were in auto pilot mode as they walked into the small bathroom fighting for space at the sink to brush their teeth, brush their hair and of course put on a bit of make up. To most this would of been the worst way to start the morning but Maeko was so used it that it didn’t even faze her anymore. Since Maeko was the oldest in the room she’s normally got a good spot in the mirror as she sat brushing her teeth before simply running a brush throughout her brown locks. “Finished.” Maeko spoke and as she got up the other girl she scrambled for her spot.

It was quite a chilly winter morning and so Maeko put on a long sleeved vest before she put on her white school shirt which actually had a small yellowish stain on the collar she would of bought a new one if she had the money. Maeko had been wearing the exact same uniform since she started school and it was getting a bit small as the skirt was just about long enough to be allowed by the school who knew her situation. Maeko zipped up her skirt and pulled on a pair of thick black stockings before she left the collectives room to go and battle the boys for some breakfast.

The kitchen was in a state. Rice everywhere. Miso soup up the walls and peoples lunchboxes half eaten. Maeko walked over to one of the 5 rice cookers as she opened it and found just enough for one person and so she quickly scooped it out into a bowl. She stood up and ate as the table was crowded to the brim with little ones who were being helped by the care workers. “Good Morning Maeko. I managed to save your lunch box.” a social worker said handing Maeko the small box wrapped in plain white cloth as Maeko just nodded as she had a mouthful of rice. Maeko finished the bowl of rice and took her lunch box to the front door as she placed it inside her school bag. Maeko slipped on her shoes and pulled on her blazer and then her winter coat followed by her scarf. “I’m off!” Maeko shouted as a chorus of voices replied “See you soon!” This was Maeko’s part of the day, leaving her care home.

It had snowed the previous day but now all the snow had turned to ice so Maeko was going to have extra careful and not break her wrist from falling on her way to school. Maeko walked out of the front gate of the care home which she always did quickly as she would rather be caught dead then letting anyone know where she actually lived but as she walked she thought she felt someone looking at her but she ignored the feeling and continued on. Maeko quickly jogged until she got to the end of the road where she then continued on her way to school.

It wasn’t a long walk to school and soon Maeko joined the stream of other school kids as she entered through the school gates as she picked up the pace as the winter chill had caused Maeko’s nose and cheeks to turn a bright pink colour. As Maeko walked into the warm school building she let out a sigh of relief as she quickly switched her shoes at her locker before heading up to her homeroom.

As Maeko slid open the door to her class room she spotted Iwaizumi-senpai as he greeted her with a simple “Morning.” As Maeko just bowed slightly as he passed her his stream of fan girls glaring at her and so Maeko made a swift exit to her classroom. Maeko sat down in her seat which was on the window row just before the last desk.

Inside Maeko felt like something important was going to happen today but she just couldn’t quite put her finger on it.

Iwaizumi Norobu

His feet pounded on the concrete as his lungs ached from inhaling the extremely cold air. The sun had only just risen but the star volleyball player had already started training for the day. Some may thought he was crazy running in this weather but it didn’t now faze Norobu as he was so determined to reach Japan’s national youth team that he was willing to miss a few hours of precious sleep. Norobu was towards the end of his run and was covered in sweat as he turned the corner onto his street and then up to his home where he entered through the front door.

“I’m home.” He said in a gruff voice as his family was all awake and sat around the table for breakfast “I saved you some.” His mother said a bright smile on her face as he just nodded heading up to the bathroom for a quick shower. As the hot water hit his bare skin it felt like a raging fire was travelling his across his body as the sudden temperature difference was a bit of a shock to the body but he just got on with his lava shower as he had to get to school soon.

Norobu was out the shower and in his school uniform as he jogged downstairs sitting at the breakfast table. He rubbed his little sisters hair as she whined but he knew that she actually liked it. Norobu sat down in his normal seat which was across from his father who used to be a volleyball player for Japan. Norobu’s Father was his role model as he wished to walk in the footsteps of his father. Norobu’s chain of thought was cut off by his mother “Eat quickly. Otherwise you’ll be late!” She ordered as. Norobu tucked into the fish his mother had put in front of him.

With a full stomach Norobu was at the door helping his sister put on her coat while he also slipped on his shoes “Aiko! You better wear your gloves.’ His mother said from the kitchen. The little girl just groaned as she hated wearing gloves for some strange reason. Norobu handed his sister her gloves before putting on his own and then the two headed out the door. “See you later Aiko.” Norobu said as the two parted ways at the end of the road.

As Norobu got closer to school it was quite obvious at the amount of girls that were gossiping and giggling about him. This had been happening to Norobu since middle school and he normally didn’t spare a single girl even an inch of attention but recently their had been one that was constantly following him. Uchida Arisa, the most popular girl in school seemed to like him over every boy in their grade. It was actuslly rather annoying as he had gotten threats about trying to date her.

As Norobu was walking to his classroom he spotted Uchida’s good friend Hinata as he politely said good morning as she was more tolerable than her best friend. Norobu headed up the stairs to the third floor where the 3rd year classrooms were as he entered his best friend immediately swung an arm over his shoulder “Morning Noro-chan!” He said as Norobu just rolled his eyes heading to his chair and as soon as he sat down be mentally began to count wondering when Uchida would make her first appearance of the day.

Classes didn't start for another two hours, but Ryuuichi was dressed and ready to run out. Technically, he was wearing the school uniform (or at least, some close variation of it). But with how baggy his pants were so you could see the top of his boxers peeking out above, and with his button down top that he hardly bothered to button up so you could catch a glimpse of a good amount of his chest, it was like he was hardly wearing the school uniform. Tied around his waist was his black hoodie that he was likely going to throw on if he got chilly outside later. His mother would be so disappointed if she saw him now -- which was honestly probably the whole point. To further enhance this "bad boy" look he was going for, he put his gold triangle earrings back on. And although it wasn't visible under his sleeves, he had tastefully done twin dragon tattoos on both his arms to complement his name, Ryuuichi.

Before he'd even made it out the door, he already popped a cigarette between his lips. Just before he could light it up, it was promptly snatched out of his mouth. "Your mother wouldn't be too pleased to see you doing that. Especially not in the house, Ryuuichi-sama," an older man spoke up, standing tall in front of Ryuuichi. He clicked his tongue quietly and waved the old butler off as if to say whatever.

Instead of sticking around to get lectured again, Ryuuichi hurried out of the grand house. The car was waiting for him out in the front, just like every morning. But just like every morning, he brushed the driver off and started his own walk off the estate. They lived in a bustling little part of town. There were shops, a park, nice restaurants and cafes, and even an orphanage tucked away in the back. Most people avoided that area, which was why the young high school student decided that was the perfect place to spend his time. He always left the house a lot earlier than he ever had to, only because he couldn't stand staying there. With his extra time, he'd often wander around and explore new areas. That was, until he discovered the orphanage. There was something almost quaint and creepy about the old building, tucked away in the backyard of all the nicer estates.

Ryuuichi loved it.

Heading towards the very building, he placed another cigarette between his lips, this time, successfully lighting it up. He leaned against the old, decrepit wall outside the front gates of the orphanage. It felt nice just relaxing by a place like this. No one was around to yell at him or stare at him or tell him how to dress or even stand. Hearing the front doors push open, he turned his head slightly to see who it would be this morning - although he knew already. It was the girl who wore the same uniform as him and took the same path to get to school. He nodded at her once in greeting, but she didn't seem to notice so he decided to keep quiet. Sometimes they walked to school at the same time, but she still didn't seem to notice him. It was amusing. Chucking quietly as she passed him again, he tossed his cig and untied his hoodie, throwing it on over his head.

Maybe I should stop being a creep and try talking to her today? He wondered to himself, just like he did everyday. But he never had a reason to talk to her. She was totally plain and not at all his type. From what he's seen of her in school, she was that "nice" type. They were in the same class and he saw how she interacted with the others. Almost as soon as the two made it into the school, she was being greeted by others. Hmph. She notices everyone else but not me? He was slightly offended.

Just as he was about to step into the classroom, however, he was stopped by their homeroom teacher. She pulled him aside sternly and after just a few minutes, he felt his mood worsen, which he didn't think was possible. Once their sensei dismissed him, he huffed grumpily and headed into the classroom. That's when his eyes landed on the girl again. You'd think he'd know her name after being in the same class as her for two years. Glancing up at the clock hanging on the wall, he nodded to himself. He had five minutes. With an air of authority - and almost menace - he walked straight for her desk. "Oi. I need to talk to you. Privately."

Obsessive was definitely one word to describe Arisa. She's always been the type to get easily attached. Prior to entering high school, she was one of those obsessive otaku types. Sometimes she found herself watching whatever her otaku brother was playing in the living room from her spot in the kitchen, but she gave that life up three years ago when her good looks and bubbly personality helped launched her into the limelight of her new school. After her otaku phase, she had a small obsession with baking during her first year. Then throughout her second year, she grew unhealthily attached to shopping and fashion. Hell, she even had to pick up on a part time job in order to fund her hobby. Now for her third year, she decided to quit her part time and her shopping habits. But one interest of hers that she knew was more than just a phase and that she's been holding strong to since she entered high school, was her dedication to Iwaizumi Norobu.

That's why she was awake extra early brewing a special herbal tea that Norobu liked. It helped calm his muscles after intense training. Granted, he never explicitly told her that, but every time she made it for him and whenever she watched him drink it, he definitely looked much more at ease. As soon as she finished making it, she carefully poured it into the usual thermal cup container she let him use. On the silver cup was a Sharpie drawn heart. Then, next to the heart, without fail, she always made sure to paste a small post-it note for the athlete.

'Fight, Iwaizumi-kun! ♡
I hope this tea helps heal your muscles & your nerves again, today!
- Arisa'

She wasn't afraid to put her name on these things. While she was popular and widely desired by a number of their schoolmates, she knew Iwaizumi wasn't shy from the spotlight either. Anyone who tried to get close to him often got death glares -- or even threats. And while she has gotten her fair share of less - than - pleased glowers from other girls, most people figured it was smarter not to confront Arisa. Although, Arisa really wasn't the argumentative type. If anything, she was a softie. If anyone tried to threaten her, she'd probably just cry. Which could almost be worse than her setting out for revenge because of her own mini, protective fanclub she had.

Setting the cup down on a counter carefully, Arisa slipped into her long pink winter coat. She carefully connected the heart buttons up then placed the white, wool beanie over her single braided hair. Once that was on, she slipped her white leather gloves on and picked up the warm cup again, holding it close to her heart. "Yosh! I'm off! See you later!" She smiled confidently to herself and whispered her own brief words of encouragement, just like she did every morning before heading out.

Arisa ended up getting to school rather early and the first place she decided to visit was the gym. Did the volleyball team have practice that morning? She was embarrassed with herself for not remembering their schedule yet... And she felt even more embarrassed by herself when she walked to the gym only to see the basketball team practicing there instead. "Ooooi ~ ! Arisa-chan! Is that for me?" One of the players called out to her, waving enthusiastically.

Through her slight disappointment, she managed a laugh and stuck her tongue out. "Sorry, Kenta-kun. Maybe next time. You know who this is for!" Almost everyone knew who she was pining for. And almost everyone thought the subject of her affection was crazier for not accepting her yet. Taking a deep breath, Arisa headed up towards the classrooms. She'd just have to wait a bit before Iwaizumi arrived, then. First making her way to her classroom, she stripped out of her layers of protection from the harsh winter and set her bag down, keeping the drink with her.

Finally, after what felt like forever, she saw the familiar face appear at the top of the stairs. Before she could call out to him, however, his best friend raced over and swept him away. Pouting heavily, she huffed quietly. She hated that they weren't in the same class, but at this point, everyone was used to her randomly intruding. Seeing that she still had sometime, she casually walked into their classroom and smiled sweetly first at Iwaizumi's best friend. "Sorry, can I steal a bit of Iwaizumi-kun's time for a moment?" She held out the thermal cup towards the volleyball player. "I thought you had morning practice... But you should still take the tea."

Hinata Maeko.
Maeko tucked her hair behind her ears as she unzipped her thick winter coat placing it on the back of her chair. “Hinata-san~” a familiar voice cooed out from beside her as Hinata smiled seeing a desk neighbour Nakano Daichi. “Nakano-san~” Maeko repeated in his same happy tone as the two just laughed. “How was your weekend?” He asked as Maeko just nodded her head. Every Monday Nakano would ask her the same mundane questions but she actually quite liked it as at least someone was taking an interest in her personal life.

Maeko was about to speak to Nakano again when she heard a voice “I need to talk to you. In private.” The voice said as Maeko looked up spotting the delinquent boy who sat at the back of the class. His aura was menacing and the tone in his voice was less than friendly. Maeko was shocked as the two had never spoken in their two years in the same class so why today of all days did he want to speak to her. Maeko glanced Nakano’s way as he seemed just as surprised as her that the delinquent wanted to speak to someone outside of his band of hooligans.

“Okay.” Maeko says getting up from her chair following the delinquent out of the classroom as the class looked at the pair leaving the classroom together. As soon as Maeko shut the sliding door behind her the class was chatting away wandering what the delinquent boy wanted with the nice girl. As Maeko walked she began two worry. Had she pissed him off, had she accidentally trash talked him and he was now going to beat her up or maybe he was going to try and course her into his gang.

Maeko followed him through the school halls until he stopped. “What did you need to talk about?” Maeko asked with a friendly tone but there was still a tone of fear laced into that happy tone. Maeko glanced up to look at his eyes but immediately coward and looked down at the floor.

Iwaizumi Norobu
38 seconds. It took 38 seconds for Uchida-san to appear. He had to admit the girl sure was persistent. “I thought you would be a morning practise .... But you should still take your tea.” Uchida said as Norobu raised an eyebrow as she still had the confidence to give him things even though he gave them away almost every single time. “Thanks.” He said not even sparing her a second glance as he took the flask of tea putting it on his desk. “Iwaizumi-kun! That’s tea made by the princess herself. Are ‘t you going to drink it?” His best friend said as he seemed more interested in the tea than he did. “It’s only tea. If you want it so bad take it.” Norobu said the hand written note fluttering off the top of the flask as it hit the floor.

As Norobu said those words you could hear the audible gas as the Princess had been turned down once again by the gruff volleyball player. A few girls in the glass were smiling secretively as they had crushes on Norobu. “Iwaizumi. You are a god.” His best friend said swiping the warm tea out of his hands as he immediately uncapped the flask and took a swig of the boiling hot tea causing him to gasp as it burnt his tongue.

Norobu looked up to Uchida his eyes holding no emotion except annoyance “I don’t like tea very much.”He finally said. “Plus you make it too bitter.” Norobu as he had in fact tasted it once which he immediately regretted. “Iwaizumi-san. You should be gentle on her.” A boy in front of him interrupted “Why should I? She’s done nothing but annoy me since the start of the school year.” Norobu said as he got up from his chair, shoved his hands in his pocket and then walked out of the classroom with a scowl on his face.
