Fantasy Manifest Destiny - Beyond the Pale

It had been fifteen years, almost. Fifteen years since you'd been taken from your home by a raven-haired man, your mother crying and your father hurling insults at the mutant who dragged you away. Back then, you'd been Elias Keohane, but that was before you underwent thirteen years of training to physical perfection and mental acuity. Now you were just Elias, one of only seven candidates who survived the torturous Trial of the Lake, from an original sixty three. Subjected to hideous, unspeakable arcane powers, you emerged alive, but not unscathed.

Your body had twisted and contorted, muscle doubling and tripling its strength. Your senses sharpened, your reflexes honed, your body capable of miraculous healing given mere rest. You're beyond mortal man, an Acolyte, slayer of all things inhuman. You are something between man and beast, familiarly human in form, but only barely. Your features are scarred beyond their years, and your eyes have turned a ghastly shade of neon blue, glowing even in darkness. The common man knows you by your appearance; the beast knows you by the scent of doom which surrounds you.

Yours will likely be a short, brutal life, if you are fortunate. If you are not, you may live one hundred, or even two hundred years in darkness, slaying that which mortal man fears most.

Your friends, the few you have, simply call you Eli, now. Your family is a long forgotten relic, and the suffering you've endured has long since dulled your connection to mankind. Two years ago, having completed the Trial of the Lake, you were set loose upon the world to bring light to the darkness, and, though still a novice, you've established yourself as an Acolyte with potential. Your reputation has drawn the eyes of those greater than you, and orders had been sent by train to you. You were to choose one of two threats, and dispatch them.

Set 2: Destination and Target

1. Boulder City, Colorado - An unidentified creature has been plaguing the people of Boulder City. Its victims are nearly completely devoured, and the victims have all been brown haired women.

2. Boise, Idaho - A wraith has been harassing the townsfolk of Boise, appearing at night and striking down those unfortunate enough to cross its path.

You had grown used to Chicago, the filthy streets and reek of meat, the rancorous noise of construction burgeoning around your rented hovel. You'd been paid well while here; cleansing the sewers of the necrophages which plagued the meatpacking industry had lined your pockets well, well enough to replace your failing weaponry. The eve of your departure for Boulder, your requisition form had come through. A sabre, likely the relic of some Civil War officer, along with a Winchester rifle and Colt, arrived at your door in a bundle.

When you'd informed the Bureau of your decision to venture to Boulder, they'd sent back another message. This time, it was not a letter, but a thin dossier of witness reports and poorly developed photos. Photography, you'd realized, was perhaps one of the finest elements of your work; though the images were unclear, they were much often more helpful than the ramblings of a shocked witness or gibbering victim. You decided to save the reading for the train, which you were now in a scramble to reach, though you knew it would be unlikely to depart without its expected, federally empowered passenger.

Once aboard, you stow your luggage beneath the bed of your personal passenger car, though you note it hasn't been given much cleaning attention recently. Though a federal representative, your ilk are often treated with contempt by the masses. Though it may merely have been an oversight, the scent of recently spilled sour milk no where near the table indicates an unruly conductor. No matter. You had grown used to far worse smells.

It is not long before the train rumbles off down the tracks, chugging along across the vast Midwestern plains. You begin to skim over witness testimonies, picking out the key details with a well-practiced eye. All the victims to date were brunette women, and each was devoured, leaving little more than scraps of skin, flesh, and broken bones behind. The pictures contain all the additional evidence of this needed. Beyond that, the attacks all take place at night, well after most people have gone to bed, and the targets are typically prostitutes, based on the accounts of the friends of the deceased. Little else is noted; no tracks have been seen by locals, indicating either a flying beast or poor tracking skill on their part, and the local Constable, a man by the name of Henley, appears to have done little except request an Acolyte.

Though the images are unclear, the creature appears to you to be rather large considering the teeth marks left behind on the bones. Any number of creatures could have inflicted those wounds: a wyvern, werewolf, an alghoul, the list goes on. You'll need to see more, but that's a long train ride away.

Your study is broken by a sound outside the train, nearly muffled by the grinding of machinery and rattling of the wheels. Your enhanced senses are the only reason you hear it at all, though the sound is growing louder and more frequent. It takes a moment, but you come to a conclusion; horse hooves on gravel.
