Leo is a thoughtful and empathetic person. He is timid and reserved, definitely a follower rather than a leader. However, he does follow his own ideals even if they are not the most popular. While he never cared about social status while making friends, after befriending Michel, he became more empathetic and aware of the struggles of the lower class people in Paris, and likely around the country. Inequality and oppression disgusts him. He is willing to fight for what he believes in (well, he doesn't know how he really feels about actually fighting). He just wants to help people whatever the cost.

Leo is the second son and fourth child of Hugo and Juliette Mercier. Hugo was a lawyer, giving the family quite a comfortable life. The children, Jean, Marie, Sophie, Leo, and Rose, wanted for nothing. Leo was a thoughtful child, always concerned about his friends. He would try to make friends whenever he was out, regardless of the other child's social status, much to his parents' annoyance. He didn't understand why his parents wouldn't let him talk to some of the children he met. They were very nice, so what was the problem?

As he got older, he began to understand, but he still didn't agree with it, so he still talked to the people his parents disapproved of. This led to a strain between him and his parents and brother. His sisters were a bit more sympathetic, but they still conformed to their parents' ideals. One of his best friends ended up being a street kid named Michel. Michel truly opened his eyes to the struggles the lower class had to face on the daily, inspiring Leo to help as best as he could. He would often bring extra food and clothes he no longer needed, not only for Michel, but the other street kids he knew. However, one day Leo couldn't find Michel for a few days. When he finally found him, he saw that Michel was sick. Leo immediately went to find a doctor, but the illness was too far progressed and the doctor couldn't do anything to help. Michel died a few days later.

Losing Michel was difficult for Leo. However, it opened a path for the young man. He realized that he wanted to help people, no matter their status. When it came time to start university, he decided that he wanted to become a doctor. His parents were proud of his career path, though they were not aware of his intentions to help people, even if they did not have money. While in university, he met some people with some very similar ideals to him and he was introduced to a new group. It didn't take long for him to decide to join the group fighting for equality for the oppressed.

Hugo Mercier, 55, father: Leo and Hugo have a strained relationship. Hugo wants Leo to be more like his brother, the perfect bourgeoisie son. He is disappointed by Leo's unwillingness to conform to his standards, but was proud when Leo decided to be a doctor.

Juliette Mercier, 52, mother: Though he is closer to his mother than his father, Leo still has a strained relationship with his mother. She worries for him, wanting him to be successful in life, but most of all safe. She doesn't approve of the group of people Leo hangs around with, worrying they will get him into trouble.

Jean Mercier, 27, brother, Leo and his brother have never really gotten along. Jean was always the perfect son, which was necessary for the male heir. However, he always felt it was necessary to give his younger brother a hard time for not being the same. Leo has always distanced himself from Jean for this reason.

Marie and Sophie Mercier, 24, sisters, Leo is closer to his older sisters than he is to Jean. They try to mother him despite his protests. They mean well, but they can be a bit overbearing. They just want Leo to be safe and happy. They aren't very happy about the company he keeps, but if his friends keep him happy, they won't say anything. Well, maybe they give a look of disappointment or a sigh or two, but they don't try to stop him.

Rose Mercier, 18, sister, Leo is closest to his younger sister out of all of his siblings. They are also the closest in age. They are best friends and a bit different from the rest of the family. She is the one who Leo actually talks to and she truly supports his endeavors. She doesn't try and make him be somebody who he is not. She's always been a bit curious about what he does with his friends, but he keeps her far away. He doesn't want her getting involved so she doesn't get hurt.

Rose is the third daughter and fifth child of Hugo and Juliette Mercier. Hugo was a lawyer, giving the family quite a comfortable life. The children, Jean, Marie, Sophie, Leo, and Rose, wanted for nothing. Rose was the baby of the family, being fussed over by everyone. She was an energetic child, following Leo around, getting dirty, and ruining her dresses much to her mother's dismay. Even from a young age, Rose was close to Leo. She had always looked up to her older brother and wanted to be like him.

Rose was a bit of a headache for her parents. They obviously wanted a proper young lady and Rose was very much not that. Though, over the years, Rose learned to put up a front so that she didn't have to endure the many lectures and punishments any longer. She isn't perfect by any means in their eyes, but they take what they can get. Things are tolerable now that Rose does make an effort to appear how her parents want her to, though things are starting to deteriorate now that Hugo and Juliette are looking for a suitable man to marry off Rose to. Rose is refusing to even meet with them. She refuses to marry someone unless she truly loves them and she knows she won't have that with the stuffy men her parents choose.

Since Leo had started university and meeting with the group, Rose had tried to find out more about where he was disappearing off to. He refused to tell her or let her be a part of it, which caused their only real argument that they had ever had. One evening, she had followed him to a meeting and listened in. Once she had figured out what he was a part of, she demanded to be a part of it. Leo absolutely refused, but she threatened to tell their parents what he was up to. She argued that she would be the perfect spy since nobody would suspect a lady to be involved with such a group.

This leads to him being quite a bit gullible when it comes to people's intentions. His absent-minded nature gets him into a great deal of trouble, as he often has his head in the clouds and isn't paying attention to what is going on around him. With the group, Cas is probably much more nonchalant than he should be. Not that he isn't taking things seriously, he simply is approaching things through the lens of philosophy and what should be while not acknowledging the real dangers they are in.

Studying philosophy for as long as he can remember, Cas feels that he is just with a firm understanding of right and wrong. Being the oldest of all his siblings, Cas has always been a bit separated and uninterested in the rest of his family. Not that they were particularly boring, it was simply that Cas felt they weren't very "intellectually stimulating". His siblings are the rowdy types, even the girls. As a result, Cas' poised calmness paints a stark contrast when compared to his 6 younger siblings. If there is one person in his family he would say he felt closest too, it would be his father.

Mathis D'aramitz is a severe man. Not one to be affectionate or outwardly loving, his care for his children was shown through strict discipline and a rigorous expectation of excellence. Cas did not bend under these pressures. In fact, he flourished in most aspects. Mathis' dusty collections of philosopher texts found their way into Cas' eager hands. His brain thirsted for knowledge, and his somewhat isolated childhood only improved upon his already above average intelligence.
