The Phoenix Queen
The world is broken into thirteen branches.
A long time ago, there were magical and exceptional people mingling with each other and the non-magical. However, as time went by, the exceptional people began classifying themselves. They split apart from each other and the non-magical beings, declared themselves pure. And then there was war. Tons of non-magicals were killed as the magical ones fought each other senselessly.
Finally, the strongest of each type banded together, displaying "absolute authority" and forcing everyone apart. The non-magicals were pushed far away and a barrier was set up between them and the magicals. The remaining land was split evenly into thirteen parts, with a focal point, EXCEPT for the land in the center. That was the land where the battle had occurred, and so they made it no man's land.
Now there is a silent rebellion.
A council is now in place, making sure everyone respects the boundaries. Each special magical category has now become a House, each represented by a specific flower. Now, non-magical people often commission them to do jobs for them, and that is the way magical people prosper. The commissions are strictly regulated to prevent multiple magicals being used at once and to never allow non-magicals to understand and see the culture the magicals have built.... and vice versa. Everything is peaceful, though that peace was hard-won and is still uneasy, but there are some youngsters who don't believe that they need to be separated from each other. They have made a new House, a secret House where they can meet, make friends, make enemies, and practice their magic together.

- Others
Ninjas – Users of the secret arts of ninjutsu, are also highly adept physically, are stealthy, and tend to keep katanas, kunai, and shuriken with them at all times.
Martial Artists – Like the ninjas, they are masters of physical ability. On the other hand, there is no “ninjutsu” like magic to their abilities, nor do they specialize in stealth. They do use the elements to their advantage, such as heat, wind, smell, etc, etc, but cannot do things like form balls of water in the air or stuff like that. Of course, people are separated by subsets, but they can’t be listed out here as there are hundreds, stemming from all different countries on OUR earth, that are separated by similarity in category, the most prominent separation being bare-hand versus weapon usage. The more popular are, of course, the Asian martial arts, and different forms of fencing. By far this has the most variety of student types in both physique and temperament, no wonder because rules of combat are extremely important as well as VASTLY different for different styles of martial arts around the world, and require very different types of bodies to be executed well. Chi is essential for both ninjas and martial artists, since martial artists are capable of extraordinary, almost superhuman feats, despite the lack of the “magic” aspect.
Magical Girls – Each outfit, weapons, and magical abilities are dependent on the girl in question, what they manage to summon during their first high-stress situation. Thus, it is normal to find some magical girls whose power does not awaken until late in life. While they’re called magical GIRLS, and men born into magical girl families usually do not have any such summoning power, the school is co-ed, particularly due to the fact that some males do actually have the ability to summon weapons, outfits, and unique magical abilities, though of course, none so feminine as the girls do. Males that have no magical properties are called Blanks.
Savants – Known for exceptionally quick ability to assess a situation with high precision, almost exclusively in times of high stress, using a kind of absolute calculation magic. Their mental reaction time is much faster than everyone else’s and can absorb and calculate information at excessive rates, but have none of the physical ability or flat out magic others do.
Seers – Clairvoyant, prophet, oracle, diviner, shaman all rolled into one. These people use different mediums to consciously divine the future either long or short-term. While all go to the same school, (1)clairvoyants, (2)prophets, (3)oracles, (4)diviners, and (5)shamans use respectively (1)mental will power induced “flash forwards,” (2)contact with a single being, (3)a specific gaseous concoction to improve contact with a contracted being only one out of twelve, (4)magic crystal balls and bones, and (5)special rituals potions and smoke as mediums (rather than stimulators) for contact with elemental spirits of which there are numerous. Shamans alone also have the ability to heal with their brand of magic. In order of the most time-consuming to retrieve answers to the least time-consuming would be shaman, diviner, prophet, oracle, and clairvoyants. In return, however, clairvoyants have the least control over what they see and can see the shortest distance from the present. Oracles cannot prevent others from hearing their prophecies and only the most skilled can force their minds to retain memories of the cryptic words and images they spout, and prophets are only told what the single entity wants them to know.
Alchemists – Plays with the various chemical elements and the ability to manipulate specific ones. Some specialize in changing the chemicals to different ones, while others specialize in using a single one without altering its properties, but manipulating at will. Also creators and controllers of simulacra, though not golems.
Witches – Use of specialized potions and concoctions, usually (poisonous) herbal, and familiars. Familiars are chosen by the witch, but not normal pets, special pets chosen at youth that in turn choose the witch, together. They are further trained throughout their lifetime to have a magical connection to the witch. Flying broomsticks are actually simple brooms smeared with flying potion. Can enchant people and objects to do some things (or turn into frogs, etc), the only others who can do that are warlocks and wizards.
Warlock – Use of spells and incantations, often from grimoire-like books. Control golems. Although the drawback is that there’re only so many spells they can memorize and therefore need to haul books with them, by far have the widest range of possibilities.
Sorcerer – Summoners of “demon” creatures/djinni to do their will. Use of pentagrams and restrictive techniques is highly important. Level and number of djinni can control at once depends on the user’s experience, practice, and magical capacity.
Magician – Use of magic items such as rings and pendants, etc. More intelligent and inventive potions than witches. Are experimenters as much as they are magic practitioners. They like to play with their possibilities and combinations of magic items and potions, unlike witches, which use pre-set formulas that have worked for generations (like modern doctors vs. old medicinal practices), but can’t directly enchant people.
Wizard – Use wands to focus power and although don’t use incantations or proper spells like warlocks and sorcerers have to do when summoning their power, have to shout short words to make magic work (or think them). Requires concentration and memorization, as well as good imagination, and magical aptitude, but is otherwise pretty simple.
Enchanter – Usually more of a senses ensnarer, sometimes using music and smokes, powders, etc. More deceptive than any actual physical attack.
Mage – Generally able to perform a variety of magic without the use of any artifacts or helps whatsoever, just waving their hands. Controls things like dark fire and other simple hand magic such as short-term teleportation, telekinesis, and appearances (can make things appear out of thin air). Not typically especially strong or dangerous, nor has any control over animals, very exclusivist and purist (snooty about the fact they’re almost the only ones who have no need to use any sort of aid for their magic), but is rather handy in a pinch, and if you know how to use it well, is on par with any of the other schools.
Also known as the Alliance Council, it is made up of the fifteen strongest members of each House. This council is extremely efficient in its enforcement methods, managing to secure all the boundaries tightly with a special spell that keeps people out. The exceptions are the “Empty” boundary. For some reason, the special spell doesn’t stop youngsters from going into the “Empty” and returning again, though they cannot enter the other Houses. The Alliance members are chosen by level of power and wisdom, decided by all the other representatives, when a new spot opens up, and it is a full-time job. A rather harrowing one at that, because even though they are good at enforcement, like any council they suck at rational, calm, and unselfish decision/law-making.
Founded only four years ago, it has already garnered attention among the younger populations. Whispers of it are heard in classrooms and between friends. Because the Council are made up of adults, they cannot go out and destroy it directly, but they are making efforts to prevent children from making their way there. It’s most important rule is this: Never stay longer than two days at a time. If someone does, the barrier weakens and adults can come through. It happened once, and they ain’t letting it ever happen again. The second most important: recruit only the most trustworthy – and only the ones who want peace. If someone tries starting a real, ill-meant fight with another of a different House, the barrier kicks BOTH back into their own Houses… FORCEFULLY. No one wants that. The founders called it the Yggdrasil, because it spans all houses. It’s meant to be a place of harmony, where differences are brought together to be one.
Others are simply humans. They can’t do anything really special other than be nosy and destructive (y’all know the drill, harhar). Essentially, they don’t matter in this story other than as sources of income and as something to be kept out. They WILL NOT FEATURE in this story.
Remember, all schools are co-ed elevator systems (meaning you stay in one school from elementary age through to college), and you must be within 14-23 years of age. There are different schools within each House, and sometimes there are rivalries, but the importance of that is that you don’t necessarily have to go to the same school just because you’re in the same House, though you can if you like. Teachers can be RP’ed without submitting Character Sheets for them, since they shouldn’t be super important.
This world is a flat one, with definite, endless edges one can fall off of, though there are strict fences and signs that prevent it happening on accident. “Empty” is in the center of the thirteen houses, divided up into equal parts, like concentric circles, though less… circly and more... blobby . The world of the Others is unknown to us and doesn’t matter.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This is not our world, so please don’t refer to real-world places. You can name other cities and schools whatever you like, but do NOT say, “Oh hey, ever heard of Hawaii?” in the middle of RPing because I WILL get mad at you. Extremely. You may, however, say things like, “they looked Hispanic” or “Chinese martial arts,” because that’s a matter of description, not naming places and ruining the understanding that the RP is set somewhere else.
1. Post once a day.
2. Read the posts of those who you are interacting with THOROUGHLY and respond appropriately. Because of this rule, if you do not write celtic in the other section of your CS on your first try, I will not accept you. Period.
3. Post at least once in OOC to get notifs for it.
4. Swearing's fine.
5. No one-liners or PAGE LONG answers.
6. No explicit ... inappropriate content, but more suggestive romance and some violence is okay, which is why this is 17+.
7. Have at least mildly correct grammar.
8. YOU MAY NOT CHOOSE TO BE AN OTHER. I know it sounds terribly enticing to be unique and choose to be a normal human in this RP rather than a part of the houses, but I'm afraid the Others are meant to be completely insignificant in every way, and therefore I cannot allow anyone to RP as one.
