    “Pressure creates diamonds.” That’s the saying Anastasia Keating has been raised under her entire life. Groomed to be the picture-perfect heiress, she is poised, elegant, and refined, Anya has had expectations placed upon her before she could even walk. She suffers from eldest daughter syndrome, being perfectionistic, high achieving, and suffering from anxiety and depression. She has always been treated differently than her younger siblings. Where her parents would be more forgiving with her siblings, she was never allowed to make a mistake. And if she is struggling, her parents taught her not to show it. This large amount of responsibility from a young age began to wear down on Anya, leaving her with swaths of guilt when she couldn’t live up to the standard set before her.

    Though on the outside she is the picture of perfection, Anastasia is extremely self-conscious. Her sense of self has been lost among the glamor and weight of her title. She is known to people please and adapt to what those around her need. She was never taught how to establish boundaries or communicate her needs, leaving her very stunted in these areas. Because she lacks these skills, Anya harbors a deep resentment for the people who take advantage of her (even though she’s the one allowing them to treat her in such a manner).

    Despite all this, underneath, Anastasia is a kind and intelligent young woman when you take the time to get to know her. Her education makes her a decent match for topics of conversation, like politics, government, ethics, and more. She is always looking out for the needs of those around her and can relate on a deep level. This deep empathy makes her an ideal confidant and friend. And despite her refined exterior, Anya has a wicked humorous side. She is known to crack jokes and be witty and enjoys the practical prank from time to time (provided no one is injured). And despite being beholden to those around her, Anastasia is extremely driven. When she puts her mind to something, little can stand in the way of her achieving that goal. She also functions very well under high stress, and is the one who keeps a level head when things go sideways.

A haunting presence, the glimpse of dark fabric before it disappears around a corner. Eyes made of pure shadow and precious onyx stones. She holds the typical coloring of her bloodline. Midnight blue hair flows like crashing waves. The wild curls nearly sweeping the floor if not tight braids that she keeps them in. Darkness is a common theme with House Acindius. Her skin speaks of a deepness often seen when looking at a clear night skin. A brown so concentrated that it reflects blue in the moonlight. She is no picturesque lady, no Devana Ludmilla Acindius is something more. Her scars speak of mistakes made and lessons learned. Tightly coiled muscles ripple when she swings her sword. She holds all the strength of a trained soldier.

There is no questioning her femininity, the glide of her walk and curve of her hips. The contours of her body that leaves artist weeping. But there be a strength in her. beneath her layers is a body cut from stone, carefully carved and crafted to protect and defend. Tightly coiled muscles ripple when she swings her sword. Amongst the whispers there are often mentions of her face. Since a mere child her face as been covered, first with a veil and then with a mask of her own. It was an odd custom of the Acindius. A face protected by broken porcelain lined with gold would surely draw attention. Some believe her to be disfigured while others believe that she is truly a hideous monster. She has little intention to prove them right or wrong. Those closest to her have seen her without her layer of protection and that is enough for her.

Underneath the porcelain devana is something far too different to be beautiful. no, the word feels quite boring on her tongue. Instead she is elegant, sensual in the way that a predator is. She has a face that some deem hard to look at yet they find themselves entranced all the same. There is something vaguely unnerving…otherworldly hidden in her features but soft enough to fool the eyes. Those eyes of her, plucked straight of a starless sky, hide their true emotions behind their dark depths. It is hard to see the hunger that lurks within. Scars adorn her face and body she wears them with pride, they are testaments to her strength and proof of her durability.

Devana can often be found in her knight’s uniform. Since she spends the majority of her time on duty, her wardrobe is quite limited. Her state of dress favors practically above all else. During the rare times when she is not on duty, Devana favors trousers over lengthy dresses and durable boots over heels.

As a highborn lady, she has a few dresses to her name but at this point in time they’ve been collecting dust. The only thing that stands out in her wardrobe are the orange daggers that she seems to collect.

H I S T O R Y
Dame Devana of House Acindius, the noble daughter of Casimir Acindius and Agata Acindius. She appeared amongst the trainee knights, a spectacle with a visage protected by gleaming porcelain. Her appearance was a surprise at the time, as the Acindius clan were known for their secretive ways and self-isolation. Not much was known about them, despite their matriarch’s time as a knight. Whispers and rumors surrounded the Acindius name. Those who would dare tread into their territory told frightening tales of figures deep in the woods coupled with the sounds of unnatural wails and laughter carried by the wind.

Her upbringing was vastly different from the nobles that occupied the Garin Duchy or so she had been told once entering the academy. Her customs and her culture were seen as odd by outsiders. As a girl Devana grew up on tales of her ancestors and the supposed madness that her bloodline was cursed with. She was taught to respect the land in which her family occupied, along with the strange and oftentimes dangerous creatures that dwelled there. Her days were spent in her family’s crypt, absorbing tales and knowledge most did not deem appropriate for young minds. In the eyes of the Acindius, knowledge was knowledge and there was no use in censoring it.

Her time as a trainee knight was categorized by her strange ways and penchant for violence. It was only natural that she earned a feared reputation amongst her trainee knights, said reputation followed her into adulthood. And even though she graduated at the top of her class, it came as a surprise when she was given the honor of protecting the Duchess of Garin. Devana had accepted her duty with a bow, her expression hidden behind her mask. (WIP)

    There is not much to tell with our dear friend Atticus as he is an open book, except when he isn't. Teetering on the edge of carelessness and devastation, he sways like the branches of a willow while grasping at a reality that isn't his.

    Intelligent

    Despite the boy's natural knack for tomfoolery and the ludicrous things he says, Atticus is harboring a broad expanse of knowledge. He is well-read (much to most people's surprise), and can contribute fluently to many conversations with a diplomatic nature. However, just because he has this skill, it does not mean he necessarily uses it to anyone's advantage. If anything, Atticus prefers to keep his scholarly ways to himself with the exception of offering off-topic and almost pointless little tidbits of information.

    Bold

    A born troublemaker and little devil, Atticus prefers to incite chaos whenever he's feeling particularly bored, taking on a natural boldness to handle whatever consequences may come his way. Other than that, the Arden native is able to push his way through situations with a breeze of confidence, even if it might be a facade. Despite Arden's trait of proudly showcasing their ups and down, Atticus has a sense of persistent yet well-hidden anxiety in his chest that he refuses to reveal to most anyone. He will fake it until he makes it without so much as a crack. His boldness truly comes to light in his mannerisms: saying some asinine things, being rambunctious, or drawing embarrassment to himself to help another escape a situation - mostly to help others more than himself. With the potential to calmly talk circles around others to get him out of trouble, he manages to float through life with a certain earned confidence, albeit, a cracked confidence at that.

    Curious

    A love for learning splits a skull overwhelmed with hiding wealth in knowledge. When opportunity presents itself for the Crown Duke to crack open the geodes of literature, he simply cannot refuse. Reading consumes his very soul away from prying eyes, words swallowing him whole when he allows. Books are not the only thing that hold his attention, a bit of rousing drama can pique his interest, head turning in the direction of raised voices as he takes his place among the flowers on the wall to capture precious secrets.

    Good-Natured

    Even against lofty expectations and a necessity to bait others into calamity, the man is kind-hearted with an even temperament. Slow to anger and without finding any joy in malice, Atticus is a hard one to ignite unless dealing with the face of injustice. Always willing to lend an ear and keeps his opinions to himself unless asked for advice, his judgements are rare and fleeting if ever present. Attributes like these make a rather trustworthy accomplice, a tender and gentle man in most circumstances!

    Impulsive

    As previously mentioned, the Crown Duke is slow to anger and often excels at keeping a level head. Except when he doesn't. Those rare instances when sensibility retires and emotions take over or when the joke goes a little too far, decision making finds itself flying out the window as Atticus is left to say or do asinine things. Even the best of us choose to be a fool, and sometimes contemplation itself brings him to the brink of hasty resolutions in lieu of having fun. Where quick thinking and boldness draws comfort in getting him out of situations, perhaps using reason in order to avoid getting in to situations should be considered.

    Insecure

    While the Crown Duke of Arden puts on a great face, underneath the cracking mask is someone who is nothing but a scared child. Younger than his sister Avileen, it would make sense that she would be the one expected to take charge of Arden once his father is no longer able, but that has not been the way of things for as long as Atticus has been alive. Intensive schooling and excessive trianing took over the years of his youth in order to prepare the boy for the responsibility that would one day be thrust upon him, though he has never once wanted the chance to prove himself. In the end, Atticus is left with a paralyzing fear that he cannot and will not live up to the expectations of his father, and his unraveling seams take shape as pretending that he has no understanding of how to be Head of House at all. If he can act like someone who is unable, perhaps everyone will finally leave him be, and in his time doing so, has begun to think of his own self as unable like the rest of them.

    Flirtatious

    Perhaps not a vice if one uses it well, this wouldn't be such an issue if Atticus didn't often find himself getting into trouble. A lover of the idea of love; he rejects it for himself in lieu of watching others form love matches. In his mind, love isn't for someone like him, and instead, he would rather toy around than to get too close to someone. Unwilling to get too close to anyone, Atticus settles for flings and situation-ships rather than the romance that his favorite poets write about. Some might view him as a womanizer no matter how open he tries to be with his partners, though he'd prefer the chase over connection.

    Unpredictable

    To tie in with another one of his less desirable traits, impulsiveness and unpredictability go hand in hand. One in the same, the two vices twist together in the man to create someone unstable in the balances of rationality. One has heard the phrase "never let them know your next move" and Atticus takes it to heart, more so in the years since realizing his position in the noble house. Flitting off on a whim, acting on impulse desires to escape from underneath his father - once he even climbed out of a window and broke his arm just to escape a ball.

    Guarded

    It is said that the people of Arden wear their hearts on their sleeve and their worries out for the world to see. Courage rallies where struggles lie in most of the hearts of the nobility, and honesty is the best policy. That is, for everyone except Atticus. Growing up within the public eye in a family that played a game of pick-and-choose with the trials that the world knew of, he quickly understood that showing weakness was not an option. Putting on a brave face and allowing people to only see the minor details proves more effective in keeping others at bay, a disconnect from tangible feelings.

    Oh, how weight unfolds and travels down slippery slopes at the softest push. How titles poison the water that once brought calm. The Crown Duke. Could there ever have been any other option? Most would rejoice at the prospect of being in line to hold power, but not Atticus.
