Hardware upgrade

I know many of you won't understand/care about this, but the overall jist is that I'm working to make the site respond as fast as possible within a limited budget.

The hard drive that the database lives on isn't too terrible. It's a 7200 rpm UDMA5 drive, unfortunately the onboard ide controller in my aging motherboard supports a max UDMA2. Effectively, that means the drive's max theoretical data transfer rate is being cut by a third.

Since it's only $15, I've ordered a UDMA5-capable PCI IDE controller card. I'm not sure that, once installed, it will make a dramatic difference, but it's almost guaranteed to gain some increase in speed. Hopefully that will make SQL queries a bit snappier.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the chipset is supported by the 2.6 kernel.

I just realized that I've got a newer motherboard, with a better processor on it, sitting in my closet. I guess I'll be cancelling that order for the controller card, pronto.

Since this is the case, I'll be swapping the motherboard out sometime this evening. Expect some breif downtime.
