PAST:
Abby Krause was a young woman in her mid-to-late twenties when she became pregnant with her first child, Gunner. She was at a party and became intoxicated—so much that she had sex with a complete stranger. The following morning, her friends told her what happened but Abby claimed she didn't recall any of it. In truth, she was unconscious, dragged into a secluded room, and was raped during that party.

Gunner was a by-product of it. Although the pregnancy was unwanted, Abby couldn't bring herself to have an abortion. Family and friends judged her immensely for this decision and thought the incident wasn't what she claimed at all because of it.

The man who committed the crime was never found or brought to justice. The only person who was supportive of Abby was her twin sister, Avery.

Gunner was cared for and loved dearly by his mother, despite the unfortunate circumstances. When he was two years old, his mother fell in love with a compassionate man named Jimmy Foxworth—a man who treated Gunner like his own son. In his young mind, he viewed him as his biological father. He didn't know the truth until later in life.

A marriage and three years later, Oliver was born and introduced into Gunner's life. It was as if his wish for a younger brother was answered. Even as a baby, Oliver seemed to follow him like his own shadow. They forged an inseparable bond so clear that people figured the two boys were best friends, not brothers. They were both.

Gunner was ten years old when a new girl down the street moved into the neighborhood. Her name was Rivka. He had never met anyone like her before; he was astounded by her individuality. Gunner and Oliver turned into a trio from her addition. With every shared note in class, every visit to each other's house, and every adventure, they became close friends.

As they grew up, Gunner slowly fell in love with Rivka. He became aware of these feelings and deemed it as such, but he did not tell her. Gunner feared it would only ruin their friendship—the very foundation of their bond. He hated the thought of losing her because of a mistake of that nature, so he kept his mouth shut.

After they graduated, Rivka was presented with a scholarship and given the opportunity to study abroad. With that chance, she could become a multilingual translator. So, she took the offer. Gunner desperately didn't want her to leave, but he knew it was her dream career and that they'd part ways eventually. Rivka would be traveling the world; what were the odds that she wouldn't fall in love with someone else during her time away? Gunner held his tongue and never got to tell her how he felt.

To this day, even though Gunner was accepted into WDU—his first choice university—he is still attached to the memories and the thought of Rivka.
