Ha-Joon is fairly normal in his body shape. He isn't buff by any means, but he is slim and well rounded in his strength. He has more of a runners build, being tall and trim. His body proportions have always been complimented on as his legs are longer than his torso, but not so much so that he looks awkward. But he definitely still dreams of a six-pack. It probably won't happen. He likes carbs too much.

Ha-Joon has his ears pierced on both sides. Something his mother would never agreed to, so he went with some friends and didn't tell her. It took her 2 seconds when she saw him the next time to notice. After she did, she didn't say anything except give him a disappointed look. He's considering a tattoo, mostly just to spite his mother.

Black and pin straight, Ha-Joon has pretty run of the mill hair. His hair is thick, and will hopefully stay that way (the boy would pay good money to never go bald). He's learned over the years that styling his hair up off of his forehead looks much more appealing. He wishes he could go back and explain that to middle school him.

Nothing out of the ordinary, Ha-Joon has dark brown, almost black colored eyes. Something that he noticed, just recently, is the fact that both of his parents have slight double eyelids, but he doesn't. Both of his siblings inherited that trait of theirs. Now, he understands why. The man he called father never deserved that title in the first place.

Living a life with anything he could ever dream of, Ha-Joon developed an expensive, yet comfortable look. Like designer jeans with a limited addition hoodie. He puts effort into his outfits, even if they don't appear that way. Also a fan of layers, it's hard to find him without a jacket of some sort on. He likes shoes, mostly tennis shoes, a lot. The boy has a whole section dedicated in his closet to them (he has more shoes than his sister if you can believe it). He is, of course, appropriate for the occasion. He can dress himself well for formal and business events. He enjoys to look a little extra spiffy every once and awhile, so there are days when he dresses a little more fancier than normal.

The first words that come to many people's minds when thinking of Ha-Joon is dedicated and focused. A very driven individual, he believes that anything he sets his mind to will get done. He is goal-motivated and is always working towards something new and more challenging. The boy is incredibly organized. His life was all planned out. Ha-Joon not only has a collection of shoes, but also a collection of rare books. He started getting into it when his great uncle passed away and they went through his estate. He found the old man's book collection and was amazed. In his room is a whole book shelf full of rare and unusual books, both fiction and nonfiction.

Ha-Joon recently is afraid of never finding who his real father is.
Uncertainty is high on his list of things that make him uncomfortable. When Ha-Joon doesn't have a plan of action or an idea of where he is going, he doesn't know what to do with himself and can become extra anxious and stressed.
History:

Ha-Joon's story starts way before he was born, with Yoo Hyung-Min, the brand new CEO of a successful upscale restaurant chain, and Lee So-Hyun, the daughter of a wealthy business man. His parents had only been dating close to a year when they got married due to So-Hyun becoming pregnant. There were worse things that becoming the wife of a millionaire, and the public eye would have shamed them for not tying the knot before the arrival of their son. The two had a good relationship, they loved each other (that's what they said anyway) at the time of their wedding. Rushing into marriage was probably their first mistake. Ho-Jin was a beautiful baby boy who was adored by his parents. Ha-Joon has been told that his mother hadn't been stiff since the beginning of time, that at one point she was normal and showed affection.

The family was hosting a huge event for the summer. An annual pool party for many of the neighbors, co-workers, and investors of the Yoo Family. So-Hyun had been making preparations all day long. She had just given the babysitter a break for the next hour for lunch. His mother hadn't even realized the sliding door was open when she turned to talk to a caterer that had just asked her a question. She never even heard a splash. So-Hyun realized too late that Ho-Jin wasn't within her line of sight. She found him floating in the pool, skin pale blue. He was gone before the ambulance even made it to their house.

It was after that tragedy that his parents drifted apart. Hyung-Min became extremely reserved, threw himself into his work, and drank due to grief. So-Hyun blamed herself, and believed that her husband's neglect meant that he agreed with her philosophy. It was a few months after the death of Ho-Jin that Ha-Joon's mother decided that she was tired of being alone. So-Hyun fell back into the arms of a man she once loved, someone who she had to give up a long time ago. Even if she no longer felt anything for him, she knew he did. It felt better to be loved than to love someone else. She was never caught, even when she found out she was pregnant by another man, Hyung-Min never knew about her affair. She covered her tracks well, making him believe that the baby was his. It wasn't because she loved Hyung-Min. She just knew that if she left him, or he left her, she'd have nothing left. He held all the money in the family, so rather than give up her material wealth, she gave up her affair.

Ha-Joon was born as a result. A happy glowing baby. A fresh start for the Yoo family. That was what Hyung-Min believed. His birth pulled his father from the dark space that he was in. His mother, on the other hand, only sunk deeper. They called it postpartum depression. So-Hyun knew that it was guilt. Ha-Joon was a constant reminder to his mother of what she had done. He spent the majority of his early life with the nanny. When his father was home, he was with him. Playing, watching him work, listening to his stories, and doing all the things that Appas do with their sons.

His brother came along when he was 4, and his sister when he was 6. He noticed an obvious difference between how his mother treated his younger siblings and how she treated him. She was never the warmest person, but as they grew if felt like his brother and sister's accomplishments meant more to her than his. Ha-Joon could obviously tell she favored them over him. It hurt. He wanted her praise. That was half the reason he started working so hard in school. The other half was the example of his father.

It was early in his life when Ha-Joon began to idolize his father. Everything he did, he wanted to do to. He wanted to be just like Hyung-Min when he grew up, and his father loved that. They had been extremely close his whole life. His mother's neglect pushed him even closer to the man he called Appa. The man had high expectations, but he never forced Ha-Joon to be interested in his company. He just naturally developed a want to carry on the Yoo family legacy.

So he worked hard. Ha-Joon has studied harder than almost anyone else. He made fantastic grades and was an exemplary student. Besides studying, he also really enjoyed playing basketball. His grades and athletic ability has opened up avenues for many exclusive universities. Planning on enrolling as a business student to further prepare himself to fully live up to his family name. He was set, everything perfectly in place for him to continue. So-Hyun, though, couldn't stand by and watch as her son took a position that he wasn't entitled to by birth. She couldn't let Hyung-Min make that mistake, so she finally confessed. Unable to say it out loud, his mother wrote a very long letter explaining everything to her husband. Ha-Joon didn't know at the time, all he knew was that his parents started fighting more frequently and never slept in the same room.

Ha-Joon had been asked by his father to grab something from his desk in his office. When he opened the drawer, he noticed the pages with his mother's handwriting. Curious, the boy began to read the letter. As he read, each word broke him a little more. He hadn't heard Hyung-Min's voice calling him to hurry up. He was too stunned in the moment to learn his whole life had been a lie. He was just blankly staring down at the page when the man he was raised to believe was his father walked in and asked what his problem was, only to stop half-way through his sentence. Ha-Joon had looked up with tears in his eyes to meet Hyung-Min's. "You're not my father?" He had asked, his voice shaky.

The man didn't say anything, but that was answer enough. Ha-Joon stormed past the man who had cared for him, shown him love and unconditional support. He pounded on his mother's door, demanding an answer to why she never told him. All So-Hyun ever told him was that she was afraid. He was so angry, disappointed, and hurt. He had never felt so unloved. That was no excuse. He deserved to know the truth about his biological father. He locked himself in his room for days. He didn't eat, he barley slept. Ha-Joon felt to isolated, so alone. The parent that he looked up to, was the closest to, and depended on, wasn't his parent at all.

He wondered about his actual father. Who was he? Did he know he existed? Did he care at all if he did? His mother wouldn't tell him no matter how many times he asked her to. Ha-Joon was determined to find out who this man was, and why he never came forward. The day he was told that he could no longer be the heir to the company further provoked him to anger. Ha-Joon was enraged. The mother that he had tried to hard to please now became the person he most despised. She took everything from him. She lied to him his whole life. It wasn't enough to cut himself off from her, he wanted her to feel hurt the way she had hurt him. Ha-Joon wants nothing more than to enact what he views as justice.

Yoo Hyung-Min
-'Father' (45)
Hyung-Min, despite being the owner of a multi-million dollar restaurant chain, was everything a father should be to his children. He was warm, loving, and supportive. Ha-Joon has wonderful memories of the two going fishing while staying at their beach house on Jeju island. Or when he flew in on the red eye to watch his basketball tournament. The man was everything he wanted to become, he is the reason he has such high ambitions. Hearing that Hyung-Min, the only person he had ever called Appa, wasn't his biological father broke his heart. To top it all off, Hyung-Min told Ha-Joon that he won't be the heir to the company because finding out the new CEO is the child of an affair is one way to loose half their investors. He can't help but feel betrayed by the person he looked up to.

Yoo So-Hyun
-Mother (46)
Ha-Joon and his mother have never quite been the closest. There was some part of him that always felt she never liked him all that much. No matter what he did to get her affection, all she did was look the other way. She was never much warmer to his other siblings, but she went from cold with his younger siblings to frigged with him. For a long time he wished they were closer. Now he wants nothing to do with the woman who lied to him his whole life. He blames her for the reason why he feels so alone right now. Ha-Joon is very irritable around his mother, and can't stand much time spent with her. Now he understands why his mother hated him all these years. He wasn't supposed to exist. Ha-Joon was the child she never wanted.

Yoo Ho-Jin
-Half-Brother (Deceased at age 3)
Ha-Joon never met his older brother. He died a year and a half before he was born. He wonders what he would have been like. His mother lost her son, he knows she still blames herself. He remembers the first time he asked about his older brother. It was the spring before he started school and he has come across a picture of the little boy in his parents room while playing in the closet. When he showed his mother the picture, she scolded him with tears in her eyes and told him to never mention him. It was later when he asked his father about the little boy in the picture that he was told the (age appropriate) tragedy. Ha-Joon knows that his brother's death is what drove his mother to cheat on his...on Hyung-Min. He still doesn't see that as a good enough reason to break such a bond.

Yoo Ho-Sung

Ho-Sung and Ha-Joon get along as well as a 18 and 14 year old can. His brother is a lot different than him. He's more quiet, but also a lot more emotional and artistic. Ho-Sung is quite the pianist. The two butt heads because they think so differently. His younger brother isn't exactly the academic that he is either. Ha-Joon knows that one day Ho-Sung will be asked to head the company that he had been working to run for, what feels like, his whole life. He's still much younger, but he can't help but feel jealous and upset. He doesn't deserve it, nor does he want it. It doesn't seem fair that everything he deserves is going to his little brother who can't even pass his middle school math class.

Yoo Hwa-Young

The only daughter in the family, Hwa-Young is a bit of a diva. Well. More than just a bit. Ha-Joon's younger sister gets everything she wants the moment she asks for it. It was cuter when she was younger, but now that she is a pre-teen, it's incredibly annoying. Her whining when thing don't go her way isn't cute or funny. Hwa-Young has her moments when she isn't a selfish spoiled brat, but for the most part Ha-Joon just ignores her. He prays for her soul that she grows up, preferably sooner rather than later. He has a tendency to scold her which gets him in trouble with his mother (who favors the youngest girl).

Having only just found out that Hyung-Min isn't his real father, Ha-Joon wonders about who he could possibly be. His mother refuses to tell him. She says it doesn't matter because Ha-Joon can't do anything about it anyways. If people found out about her infidelity it would ruin her, and their family's, reputation. He's decided that he doesn't care what his mother's wishes are, that he's going to find out who his father is no matter what. Ha-Joon has so many questions about him and the only way to answer them is to find him.

-Suspiciously Similar (17)
Hye-Bin and Ha-Joon have been neck and neck for the top position in school since middle school. The two were friends through friends, but during school they're rivals. The competition is all in good fun......for the most part. The pair often brag about having better test scores than the other, even if it's only by a percent. They like to one up each other all the time.

Beware if you ever get stuck in a group project with them. Both being control freaks who want to be in charge all the time, Ha-Joon and Hye-Bin seem to argue over just about every single tiny detail. They are incredibly similar, causing them to butt heads on a regular basis. Sometimes Ha-Joon will just pick a fight with her because he knows he can always get her to debate with him. Competition aside, the pair get along well because of their mutual respect for each other and their abilities. They may bicker like brother and sister, but at the end of the day they both see each other as equals.

Having her tell him about her parents was weird, since they really weren't all that close. Maybe their similar mindsets made her believe he could relate to her. Which he did. In almost a way too familiar way, since his own parents were dealing with infidelity. The affair that caused his birth. Ok. Maybe he was becoming some conspiracy theorist, or he was reading into things that didn't exsist (somewhat optimistic he'd found his answer), but Ha-Joon has a hunch that possibly their similarities are due to more than just parallel upbringings. Could it be that Hye-Bin is actually his half sister? Or is he just so desperate to find out about his biological father that he's jumping to conclusions? The only way to find out is to look into it.

Kim Ryeom
-A lost soul (17)
Being family friends made them aware of each other. Their mothers were always gossiping over the phone and played bridge with the exclusive club of ladies in the area. Those awkward playdates where the parents told them to get along even if they were practically opposites. Ryeom seemed like a nice kid, but Ha-Joon knew something was off when he got shipped off somewhere when they were little and again when they were older.

Tipped off that this didn't seem right, Ha-Joon became much more observant at those family dinners. He noticed, at first, some of the things that Mr and Mrs Kim would say. They tended to rub him the wrong way. After that he noticed something even more upsetting. The very obvious flinch whenever Ryeom's father raised his hand. It was so clear to him that he was terrified of the man.

Ha-Joon, being bold and ready for confrontation, asked him about it. He got the answer he was expecting. "everything is fine. Nothing is wrong." The same mantra he was taught by his own parents. But he couldn't just give up. He had to solve something. So, Ha-Joon gave Ryeom an open invitation to hang out with him after school. He just wants to keep him away from those demons for parents that he has.

Park So-Jun
-It's Complicated (17)
So-Jun was pretty much a fly on the wall to Ha-Joon for a long time. They didn't know each other, and he didn't particularly care about her family's new found money. Good for them he guessed. It wasn't until he drilled her in the face by complete accident at a basketball game. He felt so bad that he offered to take her out that evening for icecream or something like that. They hit it off really well. Ha-Joon could tell there was some form of chemistry between them.

Their reintroduction wasn't long after that. Inhyeon happened to bring her to a party that they were all at. The two again had a great time, especially with drinking involved. And somehow, between the atmosphere and the alcohol, they ended up waking up in bed together. No big deal right?

The following weeks they talked, flirted, tried dates, but....it just didn't fit. Both Ha-Joon and So-Jun agreed they were better off as friends, both personality and time wise. But just because they weren't compatible in some ways, didn't mean they weren't compatible in every aspect. Call them lazy, or stupid, but their mutual agreement to become one another's late night phone call was something made out of convenience. Between his two vendettas, finding his biological father, basketball, debate team, studying, and active social life, Ha-Joon doesnt have time for (or the emotional capability of) having a girlfriend. Y'know, it's fun. And plus, she lives right next door so it makes it super easy.

Now things feel a bit off. Ha-Joon is just about ready to call it quits and move on. But he doesn't want to make So-Jun upset, because he values her friendship more than sex. So for now, he'll keep things the way they are while he figures out what to do. Recently, he's felt awkward when they see each other at parties or at school. Plus, if people bring her up, he'll probably avoid the subject of their relationship, making the whole thing seem suspicious.

Bae In-Hyeon

If you asked 8 year old Ha-Joon about Inhyeon, it would be a VERY different story from now. Back in elementary school the two hated each other. Having even less of a filter and a bit of a mean streak, Ha-Joon would often tease the younger girl. One day, however, he took it too far and called her something that she apparently didn't like at all. Which ended up with her beating him on the playground.

From there the two were forced by their parents to spend time together in order to get along. Dinners with her kicking him under the table. Their playdates, with him smearing dirt all over her brand new outfit. They went on like that for a while.

Until one day they just...grew up. They saw their bickering as stupid and started talking like mature people. They got closer and closer and eventually, she became one of Ha-Joon's closest friends. When he saw how broken she was (and still is) over the betrayal of Hyuk, it boils his blood. Inhyeon may be feisty and loud, seemingly fine on the outside, but he worries about her because he knows she is far from fine. He thinks that getting revenge is the way to solve the pain that she's feeling.

Ha-Joon is somewhat aware that her parents have always liked him. Like a lot. But they don't even push for good grades, so what's there to worry about?

Seo Hyuk
-Traitor, the Ex-Best Friend (18)

Ha-Joon had known Hyuk almost as long as he knew the nanny that raised him. The two spent countless times together playing as young kids, often sneaking off and getting into trouble in their old neighbors huge gardens. They were like brothers. Ha-Joon never knew everything that went on in Hyuk's life, and Hyuk didn't know everything about Ha-Joon either. They had a mutual understanding that things weren't always ok and that they couldn't talk about it. But they would any way, in their unspoken ability to understand one another just by looks or a single word.

Now Ha-Joon wonders if any of it was real. Did Hyuk ever truly care about him? After he treated Inhyeon the way he did, how could he trust him? Everything he had told him could have been a lie. Which made him feel angry and incredibly hurt. With the recent sting of the lies coming to light about his parentage, it made that feeling of betrayal that much stronger. It's just as much about himself as it is about Inhyeon.

But no matter how much he says he does, he can't hate Hyuk. He loves him too much for that to ever be true.

Hye-Bin can be described as a strong and independent person who would achieve everything she sets her mind into it. A perfectionist at heart that wants to be at the top all the time trying to prove her worth, especially to her grandmother. The story of the Jang family starts when the arranged marriage of Jang Byung-Ho and Park Eun-Yeong was settled thank to their parents, mostly because at that time the hospital needed investment and Eun-Yeong's father would only agree to invest in the hospital if his daughter married the future heir of the hospital.

A marriage created just for the convenience of money and gaining something material didn't set up well for the young couple neither of them wanted to marry the other and had to give up the people they once loved. The marriage life of the newly married couple was cold and distant just showing up they were the perfect couple in front of everyone but never really talking to each other when they were alone.

But with a marriage where love didn't exist, it was just an only matter of time until they searched love in someone else, and when the opportunity came for Byung-Ho with a past love he let go because of his arranged marriage he decided to cheat on his wife not thinking and what could happen.

Even if the couple didn't love each other it was just a matter of time until they were pushed for their families to start having children, that's when Hye-Bin was born the first girl in the Jang family, the arrival of the future heir was a surprise for the Jang family who was used to having boys and be the one in charge of the hospital, this didn't settle well for the mother of Byung-Ho who never agreed on the marriage of her son with Eun-Yeong, this made the old lady to put more pressure on the new mother in order to make Hye-Bin someone worth of one day owning the family hospital.

While growing up her parents made sure that Hye-Bin was at the top of everything she did from sports, arts to school she was always excelling in her activities. She found a love for fencing and the violin at such a young age and that lead her to start attending competitions and winning them or be the star of her violin recitals without leaving aside her top grades.

At the age of six, her parents gave birth to her little sister in hopes of maybe bringing a boy to the family, while growing up the sisters were close but as Hye-Bin started becoming a teen the sisters became distant and the younger one started bickering and getting on the nerves of her older sister.

As Hye-Bin became a teenager she became more focused on her goal of becoming a doctor, she became the president of the student council and took part in all the activities she could to prove that she was better than the rest and to prove to her grandmother that she could excel in everything she wanted.

It wasn't until one night when Hye-Bin's parents thought both of their daughters were staying at their friend's house which only happened to be Hye-Jin while Hye-Bin stayed in the house she heard how her father who was drunk that night started arguing with Eun-Yeong and he admitted that he cheated on her along with the news that people were starting to spread the word that the hospital showed immoral behavior to their patients at the discovery of this Hye-Bin felt that her world was crumbling apart and the life she once thought perfect and that she had worked so far was falling apart and might not even exist.

Newborn to Toddler

The Kim had always prayed that this day would come. They had their fingers crossed as they waited to hear from the doctor if Ji-Eun would be giving birth to a boy or a girl. They had prayed for a boy, to continue their defined legacy and keep the family name and trade going strong. And if they had a girl… well… They would just have to keep on trying, wouldn’t they?

So, the day when Kim Ryeom came into the world, there were celebrations from Kim Ji-Eun and Jae-Bong, and all their employees. They were proud of their newborn son and told all those who would listen how he was going to continue with the family name and make everyone proud. They embraced him, but not for who he was, but for the potential he had in the future. He had the potential to uphold the family name, honour, and business. That is all his parents wanted and prayed for in life.

However, they seemed to struggle with the concept of having a newborn child and running a bank company. Even with all the extra help from their maids and nanny’s, it seemed as if Ryeom only wanted to be by his parents. Ji-Eun was pulling her hair out, trying to figure out how to balance her life. That’s when her Umma, Lee Byeol, came to visit to meet her first grandson. Ryeom took an instant liking to his Helmoni, and his parents were finally able to breathe and continue with work.

A wild, crazy idea came to his parent’s head; what if Helmoni took Ryeom and cared for him for us while we got through this rough patch? After some negotiations (heck, a contract was even created!), Ryeom was on his way to Busan with his Helmoni to start his life first stage of his life on a farm. Byeol thought it was only going to be a couple of months. However, a couple of months turned into years. And at the age of four, Ryeom was still living in Busan with his Helmoni.

Childhood to Pre-Teen

While living with his Helmoni, his parents would often visit once a month to see how everything was. Even then, they only stuck around for an hour or less. With the absence of his parents, and how stressed Helmoni was before they arrived, his parents felt more like his boss to him. He made sure to stay quiet and to only speak when asked questions. Ryeom hated those days when his parents would come for a visit.

When Ryeom was five years old, he woke up to find his Helmoni passed out in the kitchen. He tried to wake her up, but she was cold and unresponsive. After running to the closest neighbour’s house, he told the man who lived there what had happened and he came rushing to their aid. However, it was too late. Lee Byeol had died of a heart attack, and was laid to rest.

Ryeom was absolutely heartbroken, but there was no time to mourn. His parents came to collect him and would constantly tell him off for crying. They would imply their toxic masculinity views on him, saying that “only gay men and women cry” – drilling it into his brain that, apparently, these were bad things.

It wasn’t the only ‘bad thing’ that his parents continued to drill in. Moving back home and living with his parents again was a massive change. It seemed that everything he did was ‘bad’ and would often result in getting punished for doing so. He was often sent to his room with no supper or made to kneel on the ground with his arms high in the air until his parents told him he could go. His parents were slowly trying to morph into them: homophobic, racist, and entitled rich people. Something which his Helmoni had always raised him to not be.

It was the combination of all the stress and feeling unwanted and unloved that caused Ryeom to start binge eating. He felt like there was something missing inside of him, and quite often would pass it off as being hungry. And so, when his parents weren’t around, he would eat. And eat. And continue to eat. He ate because he felt like it was the thing that was going to fill in all the empty spots in his chest. It would fill all the emptiness that he felt throughout his days.

His parents were blind to it all until, one day, they noticed that his clothes were starting to become too small. At first, they just assumed it was because of a growth spurt. However, they soon realised that no growth spurt would do this as their son continued to gain weight. At the age of eight, they sent him to a weight loss clinic to lose the weight he had gained. After all, in their own words, “we can’t have a fat son”.

Ryeom stayed at the clinic for almost a full year before finally reaching a healthy BMI once more. By the age of eleven, the puberty monster was really starting to get Ryeom going and he began to ask a lot of questions. Why? was his favourite thing to ask when his parents would tell him not to do certain things. However, with the questioning brought something new. Something that he thought his parents would never do. Sure, they were harsh. Even emotionally abusive sometimes.

But his Appa had finally had enough; and they began to smack him across the face if he ever questioned them. After a couple of occasions, Ryeom finally learnt to just keep his mouth shut and to go along with whatever his parents told him to do.

Teenage

Things only seemed to get progressively worse as he grew older.

Ryeom wanted to do this own thing; he wanted to go on adventures and see the world. He wanted to write novels and create scripts, and branch out creatively. All these things he wanted to do, were apparently the polar opposite of the things that his parents wanted him to do. So, there were many fights. Many glasses were smashed against walls and open palms striking Ryeom’s cheek. His parents obviously had decided ‘well, if we can mentally influence him to following our ways, we plan on physically influencing him’.

As his parents continued their strange form of discipline, Ryeom grew petrified of his Appa – the man who gave out most of the punishments. In fact, he was so scared of the man that he intentionally went out of his way to either avoid him (which would sometimes result in him skipping meals), or to follow Aaron Burr’s famous lines in Hamilton: Smile more, talk less. He remained quiet around his Appa, and just kept a mask on. Slowly, but surely, it drove him back into binge eating.

Once again, his parents noticed the weight gain. At fifteen, his parents decided to bring Ryeom back to the weight loss clinic. After another year of attending the clinic, he was deemed with a healthy BMI, once again. His parents organised a personal trainer and he was brought onto a very strict diet. The last thing that they wanted was for their only son – their heir – to become “fat” again, right?

Ryeom has an ISTJ-T personality type; also known as the Logistician personality type. In all honesty, he feels as if his personality has been molded and shifted this way because of his parents. Social theorist Urie Bronfenbrenner came up with the ecological systems theory that states that a person’s personality and how they’re shaped during their childhood depends on their environment. Depending on the person’s immediate environment, connections, indirect environment, social and cultural values, and changes over time, will dictate how a person views their world and about themselves.

He often wonders what life would’ve been like had he grown up in a different ecological system, because he finds it hard to really connect with his own personality. There are traits in his personality he wishes he never had, or he could fully see his parents having high influence over. For example, when working towards a goal, he holds back none of his time and energy completing each task with accuracy and patience. He knows that the only reason he does this is because of the way his parents have taught him. If he didn’t go about this way, then he would get into trouble.

Like his personality types states, Ryeom doesn’t like to make many assumptions, preferring to analyse his surroundings upon arrival. When he says he’s going to get something done, he does it and will meet his obligations no matter the personal cost. Kim Jae-Bong – 42 – Appa

Jae-Bong is a businessman first, and a father second. He has always stressed how important his bank company is and has never doubted that in saying that could cause emotional turmoil for Ryeom. He wants his son to grow up to be a proper young man, and he is willing to do anything for it to happen. Even if it does mean keeping him on a short lead, or the occasional physical punishment to keep him in line.

Kim (Lee) Ji-Eun – 40 – Umma

Before meeting Jae-Bong, Ji-Eun had dreams of running the family farm with her Umma and Appa. Shortly after, however, her Appa died and she saw how the lack of finance had really burdened her family. Therefore, decided to branch out into something that would support not only herself but her family once she passed. She met Jae-Bong by chance, and it was a match made in heaven. Jae-Bong was already taking over his own father’s banking company, and so Ji-Eun decided to join the team. Shortly after, they fell in love and well, the rest is history I suppose.

While Ji-Eun might not show it, she does care for Ryeom. She has never been one to display her love through physical affection or words of affirmation, but rather from a distance. She’s proud of who her son is growing up to be and knows that it’s only through their strict routines and house rules that he’s turned out this way.

Lee Byeol – Deceased – Helmoni

Byeol was Ryeom’s best friend. She was more of a mother to him than Ji-Eun ever would be. She would give him night time cuddles before bedtime, sing in the kitchen while cooking, and would let him ride the tractors with her. All of his happy memories in his life all revolve around his Helmoni and on her farm with her. He was absolutely heartbroken the day that she died, and still hasn’t had the opportunity to properly grieve over it (considering his parents tell him that real men don’t cry).

coming into money hasn't really changed so-jun much. she's always been quite humble and selfless, and the sudden drastic change in her lifestyle hasn't affected her personality much. she remains the bubbly, energetic, open-minded girl she's always been, but like everyone, she certainly has her flaws.

for one, she's highly competitive. having excelled in her studies and piano playing as a child, so-jun believed she needed to be good at most things that she tried, and as a result, she can be a bit of a sore loser. while this is something she acknowledges and knows about herself, she likes to tell people that she at least doesn't like to brag about her accomplishments.

so-jun also isn't the most cautious person alive. she tends to act and say things without really thinking them through, even if she rarely means harm. when she does mean harm, her words can be biting and vicious, but that's a side of her that hardly comes to the surface. not much can anger so-jun because she's used to letting insults roll right off her back. she doesn't pick fights, but she'll definitely snap back if someone tries to pick one with her first.

the only time she does get angry is if someone does something to break her trust or if someone messes with her friends and family. so-jun is loyal — almost to a fault — and she certainly won't just sit down and watch if something bad is happening to the people close to her, whether they want her to do something about it not.

despite all this, it's hard to deny that so-jun is a friendly, fun-loving person. she tends to breathe life and energy into even the most dullest of situations, and while she can definitely enjoy a party, she's also had times when she prefers to be a homebody, just sitting alone in a cosy corner with a book and a hot cup of tea.

as a child, so-jun (often nicknamed juno by her father due to his love for roman mythology) led a very plain life. her parents survived, living from paycheque to paycheque which was somehow enough to cover most expenses in the household while ensuring that so-jun was well fed. though they didn't always have enough money, they tried to give her everything she wanted, but she wasn't a spoiled child and she didn't ask for much. from a young age she exhibited an exceptional skill with the piano, and she quickly became known as something of a prodigy among her peers and in the schools she attended. so-jun had always been musically inclined and so she entered competitions at a young age, hoping to help her parents with finances by winning prize money. that, along with her good grades, was what she hoped would get her to college in the future if her parents couldn't afford to send her.

things changed when so-jun turned fourteen and her father stumbled upon a new business opportunity. he previously was a construction worker, and when he was given a promotion, he learned that the company clearly had a lot hiding behind closed doors. happy to keep his mouth shut and play the part of a dedicated employee, so-jun's father quickly rose through the ranks, gaining control of the company at some point — and also gaining the responsibilities that came with it, which were less than legal. for the longest time, that very construction company has been a front for money laundering, and with these additional — but shady — benefits, it didn't take very long for more money to line the pockets of the park family.

so-jun and her mother and grandfather were intimated about the business dealings, and while her mother had no issue, the same could not be said for so-jun or her grandfather. they thought it was all too big a risk, and with their rapidly growing success, so-jun feared that someone was bound to ask questions.

and many people did. her father somehow always had the answers but he became a prominent face among the wealthy, and his 'rags to riches' story was one that fascinated others. behind closed doors, the family continues to lead their lives as simpletons, not splurging on much more than clothes and house necessities — once they moved to sky castle, that is. they also had more money to help with so-jun's grandfather's medical bills, since he was beginning to suffer from early onset dementia.

so-jun's parents are thrilled with their new, lavish lifestyle, and while she would admit that there were some perks, she honestly would rather keep her head down and not be associated with it all — it's hard enough for her to answer questions about her father and his business while knowing that most of what she says are blatant lies.

her main goal right now is to get good grades and get into juilliard on a scholarship so she can be as far away from all the shadiness as possible.

so-jun and her father were close, once upon a time. he'd always wanted a daughter and he was thrilled when, after him and his wife suffered two miscarriages, they finally had their miracle child. he doted on her, and spoiled her as much as she could despite not having much money. he sold a few of the more valuable things he inherited so he could buy her a piano like she wanted and so-jun has always been extremely grateful.

as of late though, with his new success, she's finding herself avoiding him from time to time. she's not overly fond of his side business, even if it means getting to live more lavishly in a house where the bathroom was easily bigger than her entire apartment in the past. so-jun doesn't want to hurt her father with her true feelings about his work so she feels like the only way to properly distance herself from all of it is to lay low. her father wants their family to climb even higher, but that couldn't be further from what so-jun truly wants.

much like with her father, so-jun tries to avoid her mother. the woman is extremely happy with their new position, and after getting a taste of the good life filled with money and luxury, it's hard to think about forfeiting it all and going back to what they once used to be. as much as she loves the new lifestyle she's been given, she also knows not to forget her roots, and she makes sure that everyone in the house still remembers where they came from instead of succumbing to the ideals of the rich and treating those less fortunate as if they were below them.

despite having these principles, so-jun can clearly see that her mother has changed because of all the money, and she knows she will only continue to change as long as all that money continues to line their pockets. so-jun loves her mother dearly, but it's frustrating to be around her when she brags about her family's accomplishments to the other elites, especially considering the family didn't get there through legal means.
park minho — grandfather
so-jun's 'halbi' is easily her closest friend right about now. he's always held a soft spot for his only grandchild and he's been around to look after her since her birth. he currently still resides with the family though he's going through a bit of a tough time because of the early onset dementia. it isn't too bad yet, but so-jun knows it'll only get worse with time, and that's something that terrifies her.

regardless, her grandfather is someone she always makes time for, and they sit together and play cards each evening without fail while she updates him on everything going on with school or friends — and even romantic interests — while she listens to him talk about his youth. even if she's heard the stories a hundred times before, she never gets tired of hearing him reminisce about the good old days.

honestly? inhyeon isn't the nicest girl you'll meet in your lifetime. she's probably the furthest from it, and knowing this bitter, sarcastic heiress, she was probably one of the kids who bullied you in high school. inhyeon's pleased to have a sharp tongue, but it's honourable that she's this honest while surrounded by a nest of snakes. trust her to always stand up for herself and her pride, even if it gets a little out of hand at times. she argues that most of her attacks aren't unfounded, and it was totally their fault for crossing her first; she's definitely more on the sensitive side, and growing up pampered and praised has made her ego somewhat fragile. despite her privilege in life, the many failures inhyeon has faced have left her with somewhat of a broken self-esteem, and the over-confidence she presents herself with seems to be nothing more than a facade. her turning up of her nose is a projection of her own insecurities, and with no one else to take it out on, you seem to have become the unfortunate scapegoat. but whatever, you probably deserved it for calling her ugly, or whatever. inhyeon's busy, and she doesn't have the time nor the energy to attack people who've done a perfectly good job at minding their own business. keep at it.

inhyeon's naturally very friendly and outgoing and has no shortage of friends, though she's basically joint at the hip with hye-bin. despite her very esteemed background, of all of her other rich neighbours, she's probably most likely to remember your name. you could even maybe have lunch with her, like, once, if you call her pretty. cheers! she's a sucker for compliments, and it's a wonder why despite hye-bin's harsh words, she still follows her around like a do-

anyways, inhyeon may be the petty, unforgiving, filled-with-resentment types, but she's also one to remember people who've done good things for her. she's rather loyal to the closest of her friends, willing to stick through thick and thin with them, and though she'd like to believe they'd be willing to do the same for her, the realities of their social circle point in the other direction. it's why her family's issues have still been kept hush-hush, even from ha-joon. she's no better than the lot of them, and if she's not able to stay on their level, they'd probably drop her at a moment's notice. but inhyeon would still really like to believe that the years she spent with them would mean a little more — call her optimistic, though it'd be closer to naivety. she grew up sheltered and being told that everyone would love her, and after [the two-faced]'s betrayal, she would still very much like to believe it, even if everything else says otherwise.

well, other than all that bullshit going on, inhyeon's creativity and artistry are the one thing she knows for a fact that she's good at. you'd have to give her that, at least, if you want to call every other aspect of her life fake. not just in art, inhyeon just tends to say "fuck it" with ideas and just goes crazy, which is why she's great to have at parties, even if the wicked smile she gets always means there's trouble around the corner. a little bit reckless, perhaps, but don't blame her for trying to enjoy her youth. you could just pay your way out of jail, anyways.

they say wealth lasts for three generations. it was a myth inhyeon didn't really even have to consider, honestly, with how established the company was when she was born. her grandfather was still in charge, but her father was set to inherit the manufacturing conglomerate in only a few years. it was an old chaebol family, one of the most recognised and respected, the type to made you say "there's no way that giant would fall."

from all narratives, inhyeon grew up very, very lucky. she was rich but also blessed with parents who would give the world for her. her fortune was set even before she was born, as she was the only child after several miscarriages. they expected big things from her, so much so that her mother proudly named her after the famed queen of joseon (she totally got that from watching a drama, but nevermind). she was showered with material gifts and an almost disgusting amount of praise for every single thing she did. inhyeon wasn't stupid but she was by no means a prodigy, but her parents made up for wherever she was lacking with their own protective, overzealous affection. a lot of it went to her head, and inhyeon grew up whole-heartedly believing she would be that princess her parents told her she would be.

her childhood days were spent around hye-bin, her first and closest friend. the two were very close as children, being the same age and family friends, and their former years were times where hye-bin wasn't quite as harsh and critical as she is now. they were like two peas in the pod, always in the same school, in the same class, though inhyeon would be lying if a bit of resentment didn't build up seeing hye-bin excel in everything she did while she just... didn't. she was average, maybe, at best, and her continued failures did nothing to motivate her to be more hard-working or more resilient. her parents had raised a flower, as delicate as she was fragile, and with every setback she faced, she grew increasingly frustrated, taking out of her anger on her parents all the while being starkly aware of how much of a disappointment she was. her only solace during those times was her art, and inhyeon decided to put her all into it; the one thing she thought she could win at. when she was noticed by a famous painter, inhyeon really thought she had succeeded.

inhyeon got herself involved with hyuk officially in the second year, and everything was fine until it wasn't. for the first time in her life, inhyeon had her heart broken and her trust completely shattered. hyuk had cheated on her, stained her reputation, and when she confronted him, had admitted to using her to get close to her family without a semblance of remorse. in return, inhyeon had stormed off in tears, but not without echoing words that had sounded eerily similar to what hyuk's mother had said to him during her breakdown, sending him into his own depressive spiral.

she would go dark for the next few days, but it seemed as if the encounter that left her reeling was only a catalyst for all the misfortunes to come. the conglomerate would see red numbers for the first time, struggling in an industry in the wake of economic recession and an industry that was being overtaken by foreign organisations. inhyeon wasn't even supposed to find out. it was a hushed conversation late one night that gave her a hard slap to the face, where she found out that not only had her artistry been acknowledged through her parents' connections, but they wouldn't be able to pay her way into university as they'd done before. inhyeon would make the decidedly worst decision of her life, calling up hyuk with tears streaming down her face, begging him to start over between sobs. he would respond with merciless cruelty, and the feminine voice that pined for his attention only broke inhyeon even more. he hung up without letting her getting much of a word in after, and inhyeon turned to ha-joon, crying into her ramyeon at 2am while he did his best to comfort her. the morning after, inhyeon would confess to her parents everything that had happened, then hugged her parents for the first time in 2 years. the coming weekend was spent repairing their relationship with them, and even amidst all the depressing events, inhyeon is at least beginning to appreciate her family's unconditional love and acceptance for her.

inhyeon says she's deadset on getting revenge on hyuk, but she'd be lying if she said she wasn't completely over him. even with ha-joon's help, she still falters everytime she sees him, and some twisted part of her is still hoping he'll come back to her, even if she's too aware that it's all wishful thinking. inhyeon just wants to be happy, and she's definitely not ready for the storm that's about to come.

her beloved childhood friend, she's been around the broken legacy for as long as she could remember. the two grew up together, and she claims she's undyingly loyal to the heiress, even if she doesn't always treat her the best. sure, there's a bit of pent-up resentment here and there, but she genuinely wishes to see her best friend succeed. that said, she hates being referred to as just one of her little puppies, and her aversion to manipulating the game changer is sure proof that she's of her own mind.

  Seo Jun-ho was the only son of the famous Seo family, a man with a future ahead of him that was as bright as futures get. Caitlyn Hsu was the precious daughter of a wealthy Taiwanese family, and a pageant queen with many titles. They met at an overseas charity event, and the ensuing romance was a beautiful, movie-esque one. A match made in heaven, one might call them, and the arrival of their baby boy just one year after their marriage only made them more perfect. They were an ideal family — even among the glitz and glitter of Seoul's wealthy elites, they shone.
  
  At least, that's the official story.
  
  Hyuk, who had to hear of this wonderful tale from his nanny rather than directly from his parents, felt like something was off. The cold, occasionally awkward silence between his parents that lasted as long as they weren't in view of others spoke volumes against the idea of any affection, much less intimacy, existing between them. His father always got home late. His mother never stayed up waiting for him. His mother got sick, often, affected by terrible migraines that rendered her bedridden for hours, sometimes days. His father never seemed to care.
  
  Hyuk was a clever child. He knew well enough that their public displays of happiness and adoration were all fake. For every effed up soul, there is a circumstance that made them that way, and this was just one of Hyuk's. His view of the world began to grow twisted at too young an age, as he watched the people he was supposed to idolize lie to the whole world without blinking an eye... and learnt from them.
  
  lie #2. nothing's wrong

  Women lingering around his father wasn't anything new, but at a certain point the plural became a singular. Lee Kyung-ae, she was called, an executive from another company that JHC was looking into working with. It shouldn't have been suspicious. She was a business partner, after all, and it was natural for them to be having private discussions. Yet, her presence made Hyuk deeply uncomfortable; every time that woman smiled at him, it never reached her hawk-like eyes.
  
  One day, he was coming back home from school. It was late, because he had club activities after classes, and he was already falling asleep in the car. But as they pulled into the driveway, another car left, and through its open window, Hyuk could vaguely make out the shape of Lee Kyung-ae. Suddenly, he was awake and alert. An ominous feeling grew heavier the closer he got to home.
  
  When he opened the entrance door, he saw a sight even worse than what he'd imagined. His father sat alone at the sofa, a long scratch across the man's face as if someone had tried to slash him with a knife, a suffocating tension surrounding him that could be felt all the way from where Hyuk stood. The paintings on the walls had been torn down. Their maids were cleaning up what looked like pieces of the ancient vase his mother treasured so much.
  
  Quietly, he passed the scene of disaster to check on his mother, only to find her staring soullessly at the mirror in his parent's bedroom. A glass was shattered here, too, sharp edges littered across the floor just beside where she sat. A bottle of sleeping pills were in her hands, already half empty. Her hands shook as she poured more out — one, two, three, four, more and more as if she intended to take them all. Alarmed, Hyuk rushed to her and tried to take the bottle away from her. Right then, with a strength that he had never once seen her show before, she pushed him to the floor.
  
  Don't touch me, she had screamed, don't act like you care. You're just like him. All of you are just despicable. Every single one. Why do you hate me? Why can't you just leave me alone?
  
  Hyuk remembers very clearly every single word she had thrown at him that day. Glass pierced his skin and blood ran down his arm, painting it crimson, but the only thing that could hurt him was that manic, accusing glint in her eyes as she glared at him. He remembers being frozen, staring up at the once-familiar figure of his mother, speechless. He remembers being pulled up and ushered away by someone or the other as she sobbed her heart out. He doesn't remember the rest of the day.
  
  The morning after, his mother was back to normal. She cheerily made breakfast for him and told him to be careful at school. Nobody ever talked about that night ever again. As if everything was fine. As if it was all just his own, heartbreaking nightmare. But Hyuk knew that his mother still took those pills every night like her life depended on them. He just never tried to stop her again.
  
  On November 18, three days before her son's fourteenth birthday, Caitlyn Seo overdosed on prescription drugs and left her painful world before the ambulance could even arrive. To protect the reputation of her family and JHC, her death was announced as being due to a sudden illness.
  
  "Be careful with what you tell others," his father warned him. They didn't want anyone to know the truth, after all.
  
  And, so, to anyone who asked, Hyuk only said, "It's alright, I'll be fine."
  
  lie #3. i don't hate you
  
  Hyuk spent the year after his mother's passing haunted by the event and trying desperately not to show it. In order to distract himself, he began to involve himself in things he never would have otherwise, with a crowd that his usual type of friends would abhor. Though he was never as nice as he showed himself, Hyuk had always truly been a fairly clean-cut sort. It was only during this period that he started to develop his wilder, hedonistic side.
  
  It was also during this period that his father began to put out hints of re-marriage. And who else would it be other than Lee Kyung-ae, the very cause of his mother's death? By the time the older Mr. Seo dragged him along to a meeting with the woman's two children from her previous marriage, Hyuk was certain that the news of his father's engagement was coming soon. Sure enough, it only took a month after that dinner for their wedding to be announced.
  
  If his mother's passing marked the end of Hyuk's innocence, then the intrusion of that woman into his home was surely the start of his villainy.
  
  In all aspects, Hyuk was nothing less than welcoming and polite to his new step-mother and step-siblings, something that garnered him much praise from observing adults. Kyung-ae was the same. Underneath all that sickly sweet pretense, though, it was clear that they regarded each other as an enemy. The woman had words as sharp as knives and constantly tried to push Hyuk into doing or saying things that would put him in a bad position with his father.
  
  While he usually managed to avoid the pitfalls set up for him, Hyuk never seemed to push back. Perhaps Kyung-ae thought this was natural. He was just a kid, after all. He was good at being cautious, and that, she might have assumed, was the limit to his cunning. She didn't realize that Hyuk didn't have his shot aimed at her, but someone else entirely.
  
  Between his two new siblings, the elder, Yong-ha, who was the same age as him, immediately got close to his new, seemingly warm brother. The younger was only four years old — something that made Hyuk more than a little suspicious of her parentage — and so didn't really matter to him.
  
  Yong-ha was an easy target. Within mere months, he had gathered enough trust from his so-called brother that the boy would probably have walked into lava if Hyuk told him it was cold... which honestly wasn't very far from what he really did; Hyuk introduced him to his... shadier group of friends. Yong-ha happily and quite excitedly walked into that trap, all the while agreeing to keep it a secret.
  
  That society was a place ideal for partying and letting go — if you had sufficient self-control. For idiots like Yong-ha with no idea what he was getting into, it was the perfect place to fall into a spiral of self-destruction. Hyuk's hands are clean, really. All he had to do was watch as Yong-ha became a drug addict and an overall embarrassment to the family, dragging himself closer and closer to the cliff called 'being disowned' despite Kyung-ae's struggles to stop it.
  
  Sometimes, that poor brother of his comes to him for help. The boy moans about the terror of their shared parents, and muses at how Hyuk is his least likely yet most staunch supporter. Hyuk smiles when he hears that; quite genuinely, because he finds it hilarious.
  
  lie #4. i don't hate myself
  
  By his late teens, Hyuk had become a very different person from before his mother's death. On the outside, it seemed like that change was for the better. Prince, they called him, a title that fit well with the image he had carefully built up for himself. His position as the heir to JHC had become pretty much untouchable despite his youth, and his position in society as an "idol" even more so.
  
  Behind the curtains, though, his persona was the complete opposite. Alcohol had become as natural a drink as water. Gambling was a personal favorite activity, especially because he was good at it. He'd become immune to extreme violence, so much so that he could laugh when he sees it. And, sex? Girls or guys, it didn't matter. If he wanted to do it, he did.
  
  Of course, it wasn't as if Hyuk had never been caught. He wasn't a god, no matter how good he was at false pretenses. But what did that matter when you have money? His father knew well enough that his son wasn't as squeaky clean as others claimed, and wasn't averse to closing one eye when Hyuk used resources to cover up his tracks.
  
  It would be a lie to say that keeping up that act wasn't tiring. It would be a lie to say that doing all that made him feel fulfilled or that he didn't sometimes think everything he was doing was pointless. It would be a lie to say that he felt a sense of belonging to anywhere or anyone, and that he didn't feel empty every time he woke up with someone new. It would be a lie to say that he didn't see himself quickly and inevitably becoming just like his father, and that he hated it, feared it. But Hyuk is a good liar, even against himself.

  They've never been close, but they aren't exactly estranged either. At best, their relationship can be described as mutual understanding. At worst, it's simply transaction-based. His father, for all his warmth and charm outside the door, is about as affectionate as a brick wall in private. Hyuk, on the other hand, resents his father for past events, but chooses not to show it in favor of staying on the chairman's good side.
  
  Caitlyn Seo (38) | Mother | Deceased
  It's difficult to explain Hyuk's feelings towards his mother in words. She wasn't the best parent, but she was a loving one. Her breakdown near the end of her life was painful to see, and it was something that made him feel helpless, lost & guilty. There are many emotions buried in his heart about her which he's never been able to say out, and she has sadly become a ghost that haunts him rather than a beautiful memory.
  
  Seo Kyung-Ae (40) | Step-Mother
  Kyung-ae is as much of a snake as Hyuk is, if not even more so. He sees her as a gold digger, and a major contributor to his mother's death. She sees him as an obstacle on her path to the top, and hates him for what she believes he did to her son. Needless to say, there is no good feelings between them, only animosity. If you were an outsider, though, you would never be able to tell, with Hyuk's impeccable manners and Kyung-ae's caring facade.
  
  Seo Yong-Ha (18) | Step-Brother
  From Yong-ha's perspective, they are close, and Hyuk is his only ally in a house where his mother constantly nags at him and his step-father wants to get rid of him. From an outsider's perspective, Yong-ha is a delinquent, the step-son drunk off his new family's wealth, while Hyuk is the way-too-nice soul that caters to his terrible brother. From Hyuk's perspective, Yong-ha is his victim, whom he lured and trapped inside a world of drug abuse and filthy excess. None of that will matter when Yong-ha inevitably gets kicked out of the family which, by Hyuk's calculations, will be soon.
  
  Seo Na-Mi (6) | Step-Sister (Half-Sister?)
  Hyuk may be messed up, but he isn't messed up enough to hate a literal toddler for being given birth to by the wrong mother. Na-mi is the only one in his house that he shows any genuine affection to. The girl completely adores him, and Hyuk returns the favor by doting on her. hwasun is what'd you'd call someone who never does things half way. she's a all or nothing type of gal and will stop at nothing to accomplish things she perceives as important. (namely, her grades, getting into law school and cementing her social status as one of the upper class). of course, that also means that all matters whom she deems "trivial" will be flat out ignored. (at least, until the consequences kick in). she's always been a fighter, having made the arduous journey from relative poverty to middle class, and eventually, considerable wealth alongside her father. growing up in such a manner has taught her to remain resilient in the face of adversity. her mantra is: struggle, conquer, rinse and repeat. no hesitations, falters and doubts. she's (quite possibly) seen it and done it all in the uphill battle she fought to win her current social standing, giving her confidence that is rooted in wisdom gained through overcoming strife. she's got a mother lode of grit, however, she's smart about choosing her battles and will never fight one she cannot win. she's competitive, ambitious and proud, but (as much as it wounds her to do so) the sensible side of her will force her to retreat from a definitive loss so she can live to fight another day. if life has taught her anything, it's that while the battlefield may be dominated be kings and queens, when the dust settles, the pawns come out to play. as such, hwasun has learned (perhaps the hard way) that strategy and patience will always trump brute retaliation.

hwasun is a rather cynical person, having trudged through quite a few bleak periods in her life so far. although she does her best to ignore it, there's a small, persistent and paranoid voice at the back of her head constantly questioning her every decision. it's the voice of her doubt. her insecurities. her vulnerability. for, buried deep beneath the mask of infallible confidence, is a scared little girl, forced to grow up to quickly due to the pressure of being thrust into a strange, isolated social setting. (the direct effect of losing a parent so young). she's built up her walls -- and she's built them high. soaring towers of sheer stubbornness keeps her emotional fortress from collapsing from the inside in, completed by an iron gate of forced emotional detachment and locked with a resolve to keep everyone at an arm's length. hwasun can come off as rather passive and quiet, preferring to keep to herself whenever possible. don't take take this as an admission of weakness though: she's vindictive when wronged and will never let go of a grudge. in other words, she's slow to anger, and much, much slower to forgive.

Backstory

ahn hwasun was born into a lower middle class family as the youngest of two. her father (ahn yong-hee) was a construction worker, while her mother (jung soo-min) worked minimum wage jobs to keep their family finances afloat. as a result, her parents were absent for quite a chunk of hwasun's childhood. her elder sister (ahn mi-rae) stepped up to fill the parental role and the two grew extremely close during her childhood. they were the quintessential "poor but happy" family, living in a rented one bedroom apartment on a sketchier side of the city. despite all this, if you told hwasun to close her eyes and picture her happiest memory, it would consist of her, her mother, her father and her elder sister squished around a tiny tea table in their living room, eating dinner, laughing and talking about how their day went. one of the rarer times where she felt like she was truly at peace.

of course, as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end.

when her mother, soo-min, fainted on her waitress shift, the family had thought she was simply exhausted from strain and just needed a few days of rest. unfortunately, that was not the case. a "few days" of rest turned into a few weeks, and a few weeks turned into a few months, all the while soo-min seemed to be getting frailer by the day. the family (and soo-min herself) was reluctant to go to the hospital, for fear that potential treatment costs would be too high. the final straw was when soo-min nearly suffocated from being unable to breathe. at the hospital, the family received soo-min's official diagnosis: acute myeloid leukemia. an aggressive type of blood cancer with an estimated prognosis of four to six months and a five year survival rate just under 30% for those under age 20. however, in soo-min's case, her delayed diagnosis and treatment meant she had two months at best. with their family's financial constraints, hwasun's mother saw little value in treatments that would only serve to prolong her suffering. ultimately choosing to forgo all treatment options, she said the hospital consignment form and was discharged the next day.

hwasun's mother passed away two weeks after mi-rae's sixteenth birthday. the impact of losing soo-min hit the family hard, but mi-rae was affected the most. with his wife gone, hwasun's father, yong-hee, started working two part-time jobs on top of his full-time hours as a construction worker. hwasun started throwing herself into her schoolwork. and mi-rae fell in with the wrong crowd. their family dynamic experienced a sort of metamorphosis, each them emotionally detaching themselves to deal with their grief in a different manner. ironically, when they needed each other's emotional support the most, the sisters drifted apart. mi-rae started coming home later, preferring the company of loud, noisy men and the buzz of alcohol at the club to the quiet, lonely dwelling that became their home.

there's a small, selfish part of hwasun that resents her sister for becoming the way she did. for failing to woman up and take on the responsibilities their mother left behind. with her father working double time, her sister out doing god knows what, hwasun was left to fend for herself at the tender age of twelve. she learned how to cook, taught herself the concepts on her homework, rode public transport to school, and most importantly, perfected the art of pretending that everything was fine.

life continued on like this until the year mi-rae (somehow) graduated from high school and announced that she was involved with a married man nearly twice her age, whom she claimed would leave his wife and marry her instead. alarmed, hwasun and her father tried to persuade mi-rae to leave the relationship, as there was no way a man with a wife and kids would pick his mistress over his family (and moreover) ruin his reputation. their reaction was met a burst of anger on mi-rae's end, questioning why her family couldn't just be happy for her, going on about how her "future husband" was rich and could thus provide her financial security and better accommodations than the "shithole they lived in." mi-rae ended up storming off, leaving hwasun and her father in a state of distress and worry. things escalated rather quickly when mi-rae failed to come home later in the evening and their calls couldn't get through. hwasun and her father spent the entire night desperately combing through the city for any trace of mi-rae, but to no avail.

they received the news the next morning. mi-rae had been seen, standing atop the railing of a perilously high bridge in the nicer part of the city. luckily, a passerby had called the police, who arrived in time to coax a hysterical mi-rae from the edge and usher her to the safety of the hospital. the police station had called to inform them of mi-rae's location, citing that she had had a mental breakdown, would need to be kept under suicide watch for at least a month and that she would need psychiatric help going forward. hwasun's elder sister was diagnosed with depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder, as a result of the trauma of a presumably abusive/toxic relationship and its sudden end. mi-rae's mental health, in truth, had began deteriorating after her mother's passing -- this was simply the final push that had driven her past her breaking point.

to say hwasun was outraged would be an understatement. driven by a one track mind, she wanted to sue her sister's former lover for predatory grooming and psychological damage. nevertheless, no matter how she pried or questioned, mi-rae refused to give up a name, stating that'd she'd much rather forget that chapter in her life and move on. hwasun was, of course, undeterred by this and continued digging, wringing every bit information she could from multiple sources. her desire to make this anonymous rich man pay for what he'd done to her sister was stronger than any guilt she harbors for going against her sister's wishes. her interest in building a viable case to take down the mystery man is one of the main factors that led her to her decision to become a lawyer.

with mi-rae in such an unstable mental state, yong-hee (hwasun's father) had to quit all his jobs to take care of her. this ultimately posed a significant problem: there was rent that needed to be paid. debts that needed to be settled. not to mention, psychiatric counselling did not come cheap. forced into a financial conundrum, yong-hee began distributing counterfeit construction materials to a list of small but loyal clients. his previous years as a construction worker had equipped him with an adequate knowledge of metal, particularly steel products made him a lofty salesman. he started small, selling nuts and bolts crafted from fake metals, as well as tampered cement mixtures. his business grew fast enough that he could soon afford to employ a few other workers, as well as rent out a warehouse as a workspace. it took another few years of hard work, but he eventually made enough money (to bribe off a few materials engineers and testers) and secured enough investors to go from a private owned/operated business to a key player in construction material distribution, sending multiple shipments to major building companies per day. it was at this point that yong-hee's company had made enough profit to slowly begin replacing the counterfeit construction materials they sold with genuine materials. currently, roughly 75% of the material coming through feris building materials inc. (company name) is genuine, with the other 25% helping being fake materials that yong-hee plans to replace within the next few years as he expands his business empire.

as hwasun enters her final year of high school, their family's nouveau riche status drew quite a bit of attention in the lower middle class neighborhood, ultimately prompting them to move to the area of sky castle, where (hopefully) a fresh start awaits. after all, it seems like the ahn family's luck is only just beginning to turn around.

ahn mi-rae | hwasun's elder sister. the two were extremely close in her childhood, as mi-rae was basically a second mother to hwasun. however, their mother's death changed the both of them in such a way where they are no longer as compatible with one another. while hwasun coped by building up emotional walls, mi-rae tried to escape her grief through drinking, drugs and one night stands. a small part of hwasun both resents her sister for falling apart in this way (and also fears that mi-rae is a reflection of what she could become if she let her walls down). after mi-rae's suicide attempt and subsequent string of mental health issues, she's been in and out of therapy and while the two are on civil terms, they don't speak much. nevertheless, hwasun still deeply cares of mi-rae and is determined to "avenge" her, so to speak.

jung soo-min | hwasun's mother. while soo-min was frequently away during her childhood, the two were initially closer than she was to her father. despite being bone-weary every time she came home, soo-min was always careful to set aside time for her two daughters. her death hit hwasun hard. in a way, it's something that she will never truly get over.
