Yesterday, I walked into the gym/recreation center on my university campus... in a full ass Victorian ball gown— corset, hoop skirt, and all —and the people behind the desk at the entrance were so used to my nonsense that they didn’t even bat an eye.

If you're talking about corsets from before about the 1830s, "corset" is not the proper term. In the 16th century, women wore kirtles. A little later, they wore "a pair of bodies," which then evolved into "jumps" for women who needed a gentler wear, or "stays," for everyone else...
