Very true, but near endless times of war would breed these tactics. They were used during the height of Rome as well.

This would be effective only if you have those units within your command. The cost is on both sides, and I assure you, from a US Military standpoint, scouts are ALWAYS employed. Security forces are always with a supply train as well. Otherwise, good aim for a tactic.
