Shuffle jumped back as well before going back under the water to see if she could find some more. Whenever she did find more, she'd make sure to freeze them over.
Roy spoke up. "Hold on, Turac. Freezing your own lake is fine and all, but this is a warm, humid climate. A sudden large freeze could have serious side effects."
Shuffle looked over. "Then we just freeze where the corpse is."
"That...that would be fine, I suppose."
Emilia spoke up. "Why would they be idle instead of doing some task though? Hm...it could be a trap. Other people wouldn't see them under the water and just walk ahead. They wouldn't know they're surrounded by corpses until they all stand up."
Roy furrowed his brow. "So, we're dealing with a necromancer then. It must have been undead that Tanis didn't identify. No body heat for her to sense."
Despite Jalin's efforts, the bones did not react to his magic. It was the same kind of resistance as when Niudisa had told him to reanimate bodies she'd already raised. The bones were lying still, but someone else had them under their control already.
Tanis turned and headed back the way she came as they began looking around. Roy, Emilia, and Nidia chose to stay on Turac's back for the time being. They all fought from a distance, so there wasn't much reason to get down. Shuffle swam ahead to check out the corpse Jalin had mentioned, surfacing...
Roy spoke up. "Let's proceed with caution then. Whatever turned it into a corpse may still be around."
Tanis moved back a little as Shuffle let go to start snooping about in the water. "I'm not one for fighting, so I'll wish you luck here. Do visit me again if you're ever passing through. I...
"Mm, I suppose." Tanis soon came to a stop. "Here. It's past this point that I've been unable to find prey. I've also felt things moving, but I could never detect body heat."
"It has it's challenges. Having grown up here, I'm quite familiar with this area. I'd likely be rather lost if I strayed away."
Shuffle spoke up. "So, you have to hunt by sound and smell alone?"
"Almost. I can also detect body heat, which makes finding prey much easier."
Tanis hadn't quite set off yet, but rather she soon surfaced once more, with Shuffle holding on to her hips. "Is this one with you?"
Roy sighed. "Yes... Shuffle let go of her."
"Oh, it's fine. I enjoy the feel of a warm body against my own."
Shuffle looked up at Tanis. "She won't look at me."...
Tanis paused for a moment. "I suppose I could. I've rested here long enough for the time being. Perhaps I can find a wider path to avoid loosing too many trees." She smiled and stretched her arms and back before simply rolling off the branch, dropping into the water with a splash.
“Mm, I don’t think so. I have trouble tracking things without body heat, so I likely pass them without knowing. Hm... But since you mention it...” Tanis lifted herself up on her branch, turning her head and flicking her tongue to orientate herself before she pointed. I have recently noticed some...
Roy glanced at Sinach. "Then she might not know as much as we'd hoped..."
Tanis continued. "So, what brings you through the swamp? Most visitors have some reason for coming here."
"A mostly average one, I believe. Though have been called a naga before as well. It doesn't matter much to me." She turned her head as Turac leaned in, but her eyes remained unfocused.
"My name is Tanis. This is my territory, but I'm not territorial. I hunt the smaller creatures around here and let travelers pass through, so long as they don't attack me." As they approached, they could see that her eyes were clouded and gray, and she never actually looked at them.
"If I were hungry, I'd hunt something less dangerous. I don't need to see you to know you outsize and outnumber me."
Roy considered it for a moment. "Hm... If she is peaceable, she likely knows more about this swamp than we do."
Roy nodded. "Probably for the best..."
The woman called out to them. "You can come closer, if you're only passing through. I'll not fight unless I need to defend myself."
