Those both could work. I suppose there is no single word or small phrase to describe what I enjoy. I will likely just have to explain where the line is for me where fun turns into being depressing, which is fine.

Perhaps 'mature' themes? I understand where you are coming from because I am the same way with my writing.

Hmm, I likely will have to still explain since some people may get confused, but I do like the word mature better than dark. I will likely end up using that instead from here on out... assuming I remember that the next time I make an interest check or contact someone.

How about "macabre" but not "depressing".

Ooo, not only does that word fit because the definition is " involvement with or depiction of death and injury" , but it is also just a cool word that I need to start using more.
