I am so so so very sorry to hear that. It's never easy to lose a person, and especially when you have bad history with them.

If he was a good man, I don't care what you believe in or what anyone believes in, I feel like a good person's soul doesn't just die with us, and I believe he shall live on somewhere else where he can be at peace.

I know because I lost someone close to me who I despised because I was jealous of them, and I still feel them out there somewhere watching over my family and me.
