The Confederacy, like it or not is more or less built into the culture of the South however. Destroying statues and censoring flags just because "they're offensive" is no real justification. For example, counter-protesters forcefully tore down a Confederate statue.

They claimed it was dedicated to "white supremacy" when really it was inscribed to the soldiers that died fighting for what they believed in. Which no was not entirely slavery and "hur dur white people iz best" but independence and state rights.
