It's a Dark Souls 2 reference. In the re-release (Scholar of the First Sin), a new type of NPC invader was added, the 'Forlorn', who had lore that referenced the fact that they had no reality to call their own, and as such invaded player's worlds in search for one. They had a unique set of armor and one of two weapons; either a unique greatsword or scythe.

Ah that's it. Of course it's Dark Souls, I'm pretty sure that game has such a multitude of things to reference that many of those potential references will fly over the heads of most Dark Souls players.
