Drowning. I've had so many nightmares of sinking into the blue, unable to scream, slowly dying, no one knowing...It went away when I had surgery to combat my sleep apnea. Because it used to be, I'd stop breathing in the night...

whats a reason someone might fear the ocean more than something paranormal? Like slenderman or something.

drowning in general scares tf outta me, being pulled down by something, sharks. There is this one lake (not an ocean but still) named Devil's Lake in my state which has a legend that if you swim to the middle the devil will drag you down to hell. Someone did actually drown once by getting tangled in the seaweed.

shapeshifting sounds super scary... a mix of something paranormal+ the fear of drowning. I get you. I guess its just the fear on not being in your natural environment then?

being outside your natural environment and the unknown.. just like anything else. with the ocean i feel like there is a possibility for anything to be true or false.. since we just don't know..

I see... so that ambiguity of whether you're safe or in danger plays a big role too

but at the same time people looked at dense forests and jungles the same way.. perhaps it is a romanticized version to engage us as humans

I see how we can make the ocean threatening and scary.... but is there a way we can make it creepy? Just like a ghost or demon looks at you from your closet... how can one make a scenario where the fear of the ocean follows you even after you are safe at home?
