Why do people love tormenting their characters so much?

I don't know! I love my characters enough to want them to be happy in their "lives", but at the same time this makes me want to be mean to them even more!

because we're sadists because character development is fun

Character development is fun! But a lot of times, tbh, when people force emotional distress or some kind of tragedy onto their characters, it just comes off as dramatic and it makes me cringe in my opinion (Used to like crushing my OC's in the past and LOLOL IM SO ASHAMED)

That's why we like to be mean to our characters properly

i usually have something bad happen as a learning experience to a character or to make a conflict's stakes higher ://

I've gone as far as to murder every single one of the character's friends near the end of the story, and force him to stay alive after that.
