I've had a couple of people just simply request to join a hosted project and I've just accepted them. I usually do acceptances after a certain point so it's free-for-all until then though. I've gotten messages before, but I think it's really up to you what you do! I personally prefer a simple "hey can I join?" or just a request to join rather than a long message. But that's just me.
