In a world parallel to ours, humans can and often do harness a type of soul magic that allows them to bond with familiars. These familiars start off as normal fauna of the land, but through time and contact with one specific human, their souls will start to mold to each other's, forming a sort of bond of friendship and understanding between them.

Once an official bond has been made between the human and familiar, several things are set in motion. First off, the familiar will be able to fully understand their human's speech and commands. While the human may not be able to understand their familiar's thoughts or speech patterns, they can understand the familiar's emotions, needs and wants. The familiar will also become subject to a slow but steady evolution, in which their body will start to mutate or adapt to the needs of their human, allowing the human to borrow certain skills and abilities. Furthermore, humans that form a deeper bond with their familiar can often perform a feat known as piloting in which they take temporary control of their familiar.

Familiars are a sign of social status. The more rare your familiar is, and the less you've mutated it, the more upper class you are. If one of the pair is killed, the other does not die. That does not mean familiars are disposable, however. Once one has permanently bonded with a familiar or human, they cannot bond with any other.

This is not the only form of soul magic humans can perform. All humans are usually capable of one of six general elements:

Water
Fire
Air
Earth
Nature
Light

These gifts are bestowed upon a child shortly after the child's birth, upon a ritual of the family taking the child to the shrine of a patron deity of one of these elements. The patron deity would then bestow the child with the power, directly tied to their soul, along with the power to find a familiar. As such, great clans have risen up under each patron deity's name, and currently hold power over this world in the form of long dynasties and kingdoms.

The plot would revolve around six normal human children from the real world, who would be brought into this parallel world and must find a way back home, all the while learning of their secret magical destinies and saving this parallel fantasy-like earth.

Haha, that wasn't intended

If any of you want to help out in developing this world so we can turn it into an rp, please do feel free. We need images, names, places, lore....
Actually, this sounds very interesting, like I said. I'd be honored! Whats the first thing you need?

Well, first and foremost we're going to need some clan lore for each of the six elements' major clans.

Hmm...

Ill try and not plagiarize Avatar too much.

Water: The most laid back clan of people. They are the most casual out of any of the clans, and their familiars (if any) are usually creatures of the sea. They almost never get in any big deals or fights, though they "mildly dislike" the Fire clan. They are the Eidons. They live on beaches.

Fire: The roughest of clans. Most of these people are natural-born warriors, and will fight someone for the simplest things. They hate every clan, but the Water Clan the most. They are the Sathes. They live in Pompeii-Like places/locations.

Air: The calmest clan. They will (almost) never be angry, or show any signs of distrust or negative emotions. They are usually seen with their eyes closed, and are very creative, though maybe a little, as they can go from reality to La La Land in a moments breathe. They are the Kuns. They live on villages raised by large towers.

Earth: Though they cannot move trees or vegetation, this clan never has any problem with the Nature Clan. In fact, with their determined and brave personality, they work together with the Nature clan to completely change the landscape. They are the Gurins. They live inside mountains and hills.

Nature: The closest allies of the Earth clan. They are the furthest evolved, and have very mild psychic powers, as well as their default plant kinesis. They are very open minded individuals, and some of the smartest, though pessimistic. Their personalities clash with the Light clan. They live in Treevillages. They are called the Sascens.

Light: The brightest clan. Their knowledge rivals the Nature clan, but unlike them they have a very bright sense of humor, and are VERY optimistic, though some are very dark at times. They are called the Pollen. They live in large, cool-controlled observatory.

Whats next?

Why not use obscure elemental type? Like metal (earth), heat (fire), sky (air), mist (water), poison (dark), illusion (neutral/null).

I don't know what equates light though.

Good ideas, but I'm looking more for a simplistic way of setting apart the clans, meaning defaulting to those simple elements for now. We'll probably throw in more later, like minor deities that don't have as much of an impact.

I was considering merging Earth and Nature into one branch under the Earth banner, but more like Earth as a planet rather than Earth as in rocks and dirt. So it'd also deal with the biosphere and the land under one's feet.
