Somara Daynil

Somara Daynil is a force sensitive Mirialan female who served the Jedi Order during the days of the Republic. At the age of 13, she was assigned to Jedi Master Luminara Unduli, following her fallen predecessor, Barris Offee. She was the commander the 41st elite corps alongside Luminara who was General of the legion.

Trained in both variations of form V, it allowed her to accurately deflect blaster bolts, as well as excel in lightsaber combat. Learning to use her opponents saber strikes against them, she was able to defeat many droids as well as luckily hold her own for quite some time in a battle with Count Dooku on Felucia. After a cocky engagement with the Count, she fought, and lost but was fortunately spared a demise when her Master came to her defense.

Learning that her tactics were sloppy, she trained nearly every day to improve her movements in combat. This training allowed her to best many of her fellow padawans on sparring matches, and eventually her own master.

After two years of this intense training, she (now 15) found herself at the battle of Kashyyyk alongside Luminara, as well Jedi Grand Master, Yoda. After the execution of order 66 given by Supreme Chancellor, Sheev Palpatine, the 41st elite corps turned on its leaders, forcing them to defend themselves against blaster bolts. With as many troopers shooting at them as there was, it was easy for her lightsaber tactics to fall in effectiveness.

“Master, there are too many of them!” The young girl exclaimed, and in that moment, Luminara made a decision. One that would sacrifice herself to give her padawan a chance to live. “Get to your star fighter! I’ll cover you.” Somara knew what this meant. She didn’t want to leave her Master. They had grown so close over such a short period of time. “But, Luminara-“

“Just go! Save yourself!”

With tear-stricken eyes, the padawan made a quick escape to her star fighter, and and a brief battle in the stars, she was out of the system via her hyperspace rings. Now in dead space, she shut off her engines and mourned the loss of her Master, and her friends among the 41st.

After an unknown amount of time spent by herself in the stars, Somara found herself picked up by a cargo freighter piloted by a lone Pantoran female by the name of E’lai (26). E’lai reluctantly took Somara under her wing, and granted her safety and a home on board her freighter.

Many years were spent in deep meditation for Somara. She strengthened her connection to the force, and unlocked abilities that were unknown to her before. These abilities were Buried Presence, to mask the use of the force in ones self, and pschometry, the power to sense force echos and the presence of the force in places or objects. With these newfound powers, Somara was able to escape the grasps of many Imperial Inquisitors who came searching for her. During these years, Somara had taught herself the art of dual wielding after she had crafted herself another lightsaber. After traveling to the Jedi Temple on Ilum, Somara retrieved another kyber crystal, fitting it in her second saber. With her form V techniques, this way of wielding was very helpful.

One night aboard E’lai’s freighter, an interruption of the Imperial news shown to be a hologram message of Senator Gall Trayvis. Trayvis enlightened the public that the Empire was holding Somara’s former Master in the Spire on Stygeon Prime. Relieved to find that her Master was still alive, Somara convinced E’lai to take her to Stygeon Prime. During this rescue mission, she encountered Jedi Kanan Jarrus, who she knew as Caleb Dume, and his Padawan Ezra Bridger.

Being old friends, Somara knew Kanan would not be a threat to her or her Master, and it was like ways the latter way. So, they put their plans together and stormed the Spire in search of Luminara. Somara was first into the cell, excited to see her Master alive after all these years, but finding herself heartbroken once more upon seeing that her Master was in fact dead. Luminara had been used as a pawn to lure the remaining Jedi to their deaths.

That night, she came face to face with the Grand Inquisitor, who had long thought Somara had fallen with the other Jedi. Not wanting the victory of killing her himself, he let her go, and he left that opportunity to none other than Barris Offee, who now served the Empire as an inquisitor.

After the attempted rescue on Stygeon Prime, Kanan asked Somara to take over his Padawans training, explaining that he was going to rescue Luminara for this reason. She refused him, telling the Jedi that it is his duty to train the boy. The force brought them together for a reason, and that he needed to believe he could do this, not only for himself and Ezra, but for his former Master, Depa Billaba. After this interaction, Kanan asked Somara if she and E’lai would like to join them in their fight against the Empire on Lothal, to which both of the women agreed. They found themselves honorary members of the Ghost crew.

After finding her Master dead, Somara developed a newfound hatred for the Empire, and the Sith it belonged to. Wanting to become more powerful, she tampered with the dark side and found herself balancing between it and the light. She wanted to use these powers for good, and to help take down the empire, but she knew that the dark side would cause her to grow selfish, so she backed away. During this time period of side balancing, Somara meditated with her kyber crystals, infusing them with the dark and the light, causing them to grow a purple hue. This was a surprise to her, only having seen this color of crystal in Master Windu’s lightsaber.

Somara eluded Barris for quite some time, but Finally came face to face with her fellow Mirialan on the planet of Lothal. Kanan insisted on helping Somara, but she refused, rather wanting to take down Barris on her own. After a lengthy battle, Somara bested Barris, and held the dying woman in her last moments. “I loved her too.” Were Barris’ last words before passing in Somara’s arms. Those words gave Somara peace in knowing that her Master’s old Padawan shared the same love for Luminara.

Finding affiliation with the Rebel alliance through the ghost crew, it was a surprise to find that Ahsoka Tano had been alive all this time as well. Somara did not know Ahsoka personally, but she knew of her through stories her Master had told and from seeing her around the temple when Somara was a youngling. Somara got along well with Ahsoka, finding mutual likings in their dual wielding and unique lightsaber colors as well as their times with Luminara. This caused the pair to grow close, and they fought side by side often.

After the death of Ahsoka on Malachor, Somara found it hard to keep fighting. She was tired of losing so many people, and she wanted away from it all. Though, after a convincing speech from Ezra, she decided to stay.

She fought with the Rebellion until they won the battle on Lothal, then she found her sense of purpose complete. She left the rebellion with E’lai, and was done with it for good this time, going back into hiding on Pantora.
