Fantasy Tales of Verattia: Cease The Fires

Hello everyone, Reinhardt here with another quest log. However, this time, it won't be the usual sci-fi styled one, instead, it will be set in an original fantasy setting made by yours truly.

That being said, I present to you, the Tales of Verattia (Quest Log-modified)! Below are a number of stories in different locations with different characters and plots. Each of them have their own unique mechanic which will differentiate one from the other, as well as encourage the participants (you) to think carefully before voting.

Obviously, whichever story gets the highest number of votes in the poll will be the one used for this QL instance. The next post will be the initial post of the story that has been chosen. However, should this prove to be a great success, I will make a transition of this into a Hosted Project wherein the participants may vote for another story of ToV, once the current one has been finished.

And so, without further delay, here are the stories.

The Lion's Crest

In the once glorious lands of Ristafel, the War for The Throne rages on. The Desterrats have asserted their dominance throughout the lands, leaving only but a few unconquered or allied with them. The Renvalls, though at a disadvantage, continues to press onward and liberate whatever territory they can from the opposing side.

Who will win the Throne of Ristafel? The Desterrats, who have the upper hand, or the Renvalls, who never falter?

• In this story, you will play as Lidel Renvall, the firstborn of the head of the House Renvall, along with his allies and his troops. Together they are called The Pridesguard, an elite force seeking for The Renvalls' victory.

He Who Vanished

Cherieth has fallen deep into crisis. Darkness has enveloped the lands and fearsome monsters roam freely, spreading fear and bloodshed throughout Cherieth. With the Sage King gone, the people have began to lose hope. And without hope, the will to fight and live on diminishes as well.

Will Cherieth and its people meet their end soon? Or will the Sage King return and bring back peace and harmony to the lands?

• In this story, you will play as Flynn Austell, a man stripped of his nobility and exiled from his own home for his beliefs. After all, in a place where hope has already began to fade away, saying such nonsense as the Sage King can be found is considered insane.

Cease The Fires

The Empire of The Risen Phoenix tyrannically reigns over Yislone. The inhabitants, without any formal manner of fighting for their freedom, resort to rougher methods. Civil war ensues, even though the rule of the Empire is yet to reach a year. Various rebellions surface and get crushed by the seemingly unstoppable forces of the Empire, still, the people do not lose hope.

They will bring back the old glory of Yislone. They will rid their home from the tyranny of the Empire. No matter what the cost.

• In this story, you will play as different protagonists who are, one way or another, part of a rebellion against the Empire. Each protagonist will face a number of difficult obstacles, and have a certain goal that they must accomplish.

Grassea Pass
Year 614, Reign of the Phoenix Empire

Flames have scattered over the area, burning the grounds as the heat of the battle raged on.

To the south was an infamous resistance group, The Sapphire Brigade, desperately hanging on the fight, each member fighting down to very last.

To the north was the unstoppable army of The Phoenix Empire.  Led by Garkuk the Fierce, they pushed onward and ruthlessly struck down those in their way.

In between the two of these was a large stone bridge separating Ocherile from Caham, hovering above the flowing waters of the Lincoln River.

The battle for Grasse Pass continues, but the odds seem to have favored Garkuk and his troops. The Sapphire Brigade are being pushed back while their numbers are being trimmed, and more than half of the bridge is already under the control of the Empire's army.

Outnumbered and outmatched in power, The Sapphire Brigade is left with a bitter result awaiting for them in the future. And yet, hope does not leave their hearts. The vigor of their rebellion grows stronger every passing moment, despite the disadvantages piling up on them.

You are Lars Sorvhim, vice-captain of The Sapphire Brigade. You wore a leather vest atop at long-sleeved, silken tunic. A number of strap-like designs were on your outermost upper garment. On your waist was your sword, hanging onto your belt. Your lower garments were made of leather and reinforced with small pads of the same material. For footwear, you had toughened leather boots.

By your side are two men named Hembert and Arman. They are most loyal to you, and treat you as their greatest leader as well as friend. Both of them had a similar outfit like yours, but instead of a leather vest, Hembert had a chain mail, and Arman had a long, brown robe-like garment.

You drew your sword, as you followed the orders of  Sebastian Steinar, the captain of The Sapphire Brigade - to slowly retreat whilst sending as many of the Empire's dogs to their demise. Of course, given your stature, you slew them quite effectively, with the aid of your fellow Brigade members.

However, as you fall back, you saw an armored person get knocked down by a solider of the Empire. Something within you urges to rush to the person's aid, but with how the situation is, leaving the wounded behind is, without doubt, the best option.

You halt. Surprised, the two rush to you.

"What is wrong, Lars?", Arman said.

*You may include dialogue.*

[1] Ignore the person and continue retreat.
[2] Attempt to aid, and possibly, save the person from their demise.

1. If the guy's been knocked over and the soldier's right there, then the guy's fucked in about two or three seconds, depending on how long the soldier takes to execute the guy. I doubt we're close and fast enough to do anything about it. And if we are, then there'd not be any debate in it, because saving him would only take a couple of seconds. Ergo, we're not close enough to save him. So I opt to carry on and be pragmatic.

I feel bad not posting with awesome formatting, sullying this page. I don't even know how you did half or more of that, but damn that looks good.

2. He is armored, brave enough to fight in the first line, and noticeable enough to be different from the others - he seems important. And damn, we didn't join the rebellion to retreat. "We lose too many, and gain too little. Make sure that we retreat more quickly." Then take your sword, storm forward to help the man, and be the example of courage that this rebellion needs.

Taking the time out of saving this guy's ass to say all that is going to end up with him being dead before the end of the sentence, unless I'm vastly misinterpreting, here. He's knocked over, and in an armed fight, that's a swift game over. Especially if I'm picking up context clues correctly and he's not just on his back in the middle of a fight with someone, but he's also wounded. Additionally, Sebastian Steinar's giving the orders around here, and his orders are for a fighting retreat. 'Retreat more quickly' turns swiftly into a chaotic, devastating rout, anyway. Very frequently, the rout incurs more casualties than the battle itself. Retreat needs to be organised and orderly to be successful.

Of course, knowing my luck, you're going to be right, and that guy in armour is actually our link to the biggest supporter of the Sapphire Brigade or something, who we could have absolutely saved, indebted to us, and gotten out of there in one piece to be a badass. But I'm not going to let my paranoia and self-doubt beat me, here. Trying to save him is a fool's errand, and even if it works somehow, he's wounded, and I'm reasonably certain that wounded people aren't good for retreats.

I totally agree on your assessment - but for me, it's not about finding the optimal line, but the one I expect to be more promising story-wise.

I respect that. For me, it's a mix of both. The two aren't mutually exclusive, IMO. I'll be Lars' pragmatic side.

Where even are the four or five or so other people who voted on this? Did they vote in the poll then just go AWOL? If nobody posts to break the stalemate in the next day or something, I propose a compromise of us going with 2, but Lars not saying anything, or say something quick as he moves, like "I'm doing something stupid." or "I've got a conscience" or the like. I dunno exactly, I'm a little tired.

Give them time to response - seeing how the other quests worked out, I doubt that we'll only have the two of us. If needed, I'll tag the whole crew there and drag them over, would be a shame if they missed it :)

Both ways of voting are certainly not exclusive - @Reinhardtcan probably confirm that I infrequently end up with reasonable choices as well. For the other moments, it'll be good to have you around to keep my absurd votes in check.

Yeah, probably. Although I know that I'm currently in a quest where I think I'm the only player, besides another person who posts every so often. Unless you meant the other Reinhardt quests, in which case, yeah. I should actually go vote on those but eeeeeeeh I have a limited will to do things per day.

For the other moments, it'll be good to have you around to keep my absurd votes in check.

Likewise. You'll find I have a tendency to go full paranoia-mode quite frequently (I think), and overthink a lot of stuff (I also think. I'm not great or confident at self-analysis), so I think I'll need so keeping-in-check, too. Before I start making contingency plans for what happens if Steinar turns out to be an agent working with the Phoenix Empire who is rallying all the dissidents together into one place and then getting them wiped out by Imperial forces, to purge the most extreme resistance. Oh god, now I'm actually partially convincing myself that that's actually what this could be, despite that actually being a dumb-as-shit idea, because who creates an enemy to fight themselves, intentionally, no matter how under-control they have its leader?

Okay, I think I might be safe.

Grassea Pass
Year 614, Reign of the Phoenix Empire

"Hm.", you answer. "I'm going to regret this." Without any hesitation, you rushed as fast as you can to the side of the downed armored person.

"What?", Arman said in confusion. As you hurried off, the two followed you after a short delay.

Unfortunately, you don't arrive in time.  The  imperial solider had already  struck down his blade down the armored person's chest. Still, you don't stop in your tracks. You hoped that the person would still be alive, and your efforts won't be wasted.

The imperial soldier lifted his blade, and was ready to unleash the finishing blow to the armored person. Luckily, the downed brigade member saw you coming, and using the last of their strength, tripped the soldier  with a kick. And finally, you arrive, swinging your sword and ending the life of that wretched soldier.

You immediately knelt down to the side of the armored person, who suddenly grabbed your hand as you tried to remove their helm, and said with much difficulty, "C-Caham must be f-freed..."

"Caham? What?", you say in surprise.

"The Empire...is not...in.", the person said, as they coughed.

"The Empire is what?"

"...is not invincible.", the person continued. "F-find his weakness. F...ind t-the man. Find Na-" And just as they were about to finish the sentence, they had spent their last breath.

You bowed your head slightly. "May Crea grant you peace.", you  mutter under your breath. As the dead man's cold hand lost its grip, and slowly fall to the ground, you were caught by surprise with what was left at your hand.

A golden crest of Caham. One which is exclusively given to the nobles and the renowned citizens of Caham.

"What in Crea's name?!", you exclaim. However, before you could come up with anything about this, or even try to clear your mind and focus on the current situation, you heard a familiar voice shouting to you.

It was Hembert. You could not hear his voice that clearly due to the inescapable noise of the battlefield, but one thing was revealed when you read his mouth - He was saying watch out, and pointing to the sky.

Realizing that something was coming for you, and at a very fast speed, you turned you head towards the sky as you stood up quickly. And what you saw was something you were not prepared for.

It was a humongous fireball.

Sure, you could deflect arrows and some spears, but that one? You can't outrun it since you've wasted enough time talking to the dead man. Nor can you deflect it with your sword, it'd melt in mere seconds. You have no way of escaping the situation you've gotten yourself into.

Luckily, you have your two most loyal allies, who'd risk their lives for you.

Hello, everybody.

As you may have noticed, the choices are not numbered, but are labelled according to the character. This is because of a feature (in a system that we will be using) called as "Commands".

Now, what are "Commands"?

Commands are, essentially, a modified version of the standard choice/option voting system that QLs use. Like them, Commands will be voted upon by the participants, and whichever wins is the one to be done.

However, unlike choices/options, Commands are exclusive to each character in the story, and have no wrtie-in alternatives. Small-scaled details or alterations can be suggested, though.

Most allied characters in the story (including the current protagonist) will be subjected to this feature.

And that's all for now.

Oh, almost forgot. I'll be making an OOC thread for this QL, if you want. Also a collection of information on the current setting (aka Yislone), characters, and more.

Alright. That's that. For sure. No more additions.

For now, at least.

An OOC might be a good idea - that way, we don't make the thread unreadable with our comments.

As for the vote:

[Arman] Fight fire with - well, not with fire, but with magic, at least. This way, he might protect more than just us from the impact. Also, Hembert might otherwise be in the midst of the fireball instead.

Aye, this, pretty much. Not much more to add. I agree with everything here.

Grassea Pass
Year 614, Reign of the Phoenix Empire

As if fate had sided with you, Arman hastily cast a small magic barrier upon your location, just in time to save your life. However, the sheer power of the giant fireball's impact with the barrier caused an explosion, sending you and those caught within the explosion radius flying in various directions.

You have, involuntarily, went off the grid.

After a short moment, you wake up, and find yourself surrounded by leaves. You scanned your environment, and found nothing but more leaves, and a few branches. You assumed that you were lying on a tree's branch, and knowing your weight, it would soon break and fall, taking you with it.

So, you've decided to carefully move away from the somewhat thick branch that you are currently on top of. However, the moment you moved a inch, the branch had snapped from the tree and fell. Of course, you fell along with it.

Luckily, the fall was not that bad, and only left you with a lingering, yet  somewhat bearable, pain in your lower back. Now sitting on the ground near the tree's revealed roots, you took another look at your surroundings.

The forest itself seemed ordinary - there was grass and dirt almost everywhere, along with some fallen leaves. Humongous trees with strange plate-looking barks decorated the area, along with some small bushes and flowers that were scattered all around.

You grabbed onto the nearby tree's roots and pushed yourself upward. You groaned due to the pain caused by the action. As you finally got yourself standing, you realized something as your hand left the tree's roots earlier.

You were in Maculm Woods. A root with a smooth skin belong to a Maculm tree, a large tree that is heavily favored for its sturdy bark and its extremely useful roots. And Maculm trees are known to grow only in this forest.

Now that you know your location, the only thing left is getting out of here and heading back to Ocherile, where you are to reunite with the Sapphire Brigade, or what's left of it.

The only problem is, you don't have a compass, or even a map.

Maculm Woods
Year 614, Reign of the Phoenix Empire

You head to the west, struggling to find a path due to the amount of fallen leaves and scattered greenery. However, after a while of mindlessly walking to where you thought west was, you found a small downhill leading to a narrow path.

You walked down carefully, aiming not to slip on the ground and fall down, which would harm you even further. You had enough trouble as it is, you most certainly don't need another pain to carry while you try to leave this dense forest.

As you go down, you hear footsteps, and faint voices from afar. And as soon as you reached fair ground, you hid behind between a bush and a Maculm tree beside it. The sounds grew louder and louder every passing moment, until it remained at a certain point near your location, and at the narrow path. Curious, you sneak a peek through the tiny gaps within the bush. What you saw did not surprise you at all, but instead, forced you to take greater caution.

Two imperial soldiers stood there, chatting about something. You move an inch forward and lean a bit closer to get a clearer hearing and sight of what exactly it is they are talking about.

"Why do we even need to go and scout this forest path anyway?", one of them said, holding a shield with his left arm and a mace on his right. "Didn't we already take Grassea Pass?

"We lost the fight, surprisingly.", the other one said, who held a short sword with his left, and a lantern on his right.

"What? How? We outnumber them, and we had all the advantages.", the mace-wielding soldier asked.

"Apparently, the bridge broke when our mages began to barrage the fleeing resistance group with fireballs.", the other one replied. "That, and the resistance mages conjured a powerful water spell that drowned half of Sir Garkuk's troops."

"Man, that's screwed up. We caused our own loss.", the mace-wielder continued.

"Yeah. Now, let's continue with our duty. We wouldn't want to be subjected for Sir Garkuk's punishments.", the sword-wielder said.

"Agreed. That guy's scary as hell.", the other one replied.

The Sapphire Brigade won the fight? If this is true, then you'll need to reunite with them as quickly as you can. Captain Steiner will need your help and so will the others. If the resistance is to push forward, they will need to know of your recent discovery - about the so-called weakness of the Empire.

Still, you'll need to get out of this forest first. And to do that, you must follow a path out of here. The narrow path that lies before you is a good thing, but the fact that there are two scouts is a hindrance to your goal.

[1] It's time for a heroic attempt to make history - you don't become vice-captain if you can't fight, and these two clearly don't expect an attacker.

2. Don't see much of a gain from fighting them. Positions of leadership are more about tactics, strategy, and leadership abilities than they are about fighting people. Although the description of how we were fighting before, due to 'our stature', makes me think we probably could do this.

Also, what the fuck? What kind of explosion was that? Did we just get propelled to the middle of a forest or something? Some explosion, damn.

You decide to wait it out until the path is clear, so you can sneakily trace back the path they came from and hopefully, that would lead you to an exit.

After a while of pointless chitchat, the two scouts finally went on their way. Soon enough, they were out of sight.

You did not hesitate, immediately hopping out of the bush and stepping onto the path. To the east was the direction where they were headed, so it is only obvious that you go the other way. You turn to the west, making it your current north, then started to go onward.

The path was unexpectedly simple. It had a few amount of turns and curves, and it didn't branch out into more paths. It was just a narrow, single line leading to somewhere. But where exactly will it lead? Now that you think of it, if those two really are scouting, then what awaits you beyond the woods is most likely a camp of the Phoenix Empire. That won't turn out well, so you halt in your tracks.

If you go turn around and follow the path, it will lead you to a different exit. However, the two scouts will definitely meet you at some point and you will be forced to fight them. Two imperial soldiers are easier to fight compared to an entire camp of them. However, you still have not fully recovered yet. The pain in your back is still there, and it might cause you more than enough trouble to be defeated by merely two of these men.

But if things go accordingly, then you might just end up on the opposite side of the forest. And assuming that a camp is on one side, then on the other side must lead to Ocherile. Still, whether you arrive there safely or not is still unclear.

You could spend the night here, but you don't know if any danger other than the imperial troops lies hidden within the woods.

Ah, decisions. You were always having trouble with them, and that was partly why you were disowned by the Ashen Corps.

[2] If there's a camp, I want to take a look at it - shouldn't be too far, hopefully, and there's the chance to gather some valuable information. Also, getting caught while attacking an entire camp sounds way more epic than getting overwhelmed by two random scouts, even though the result will likely be the same.

As if you were not already in a bad situation, you decided to continue walking forward and head to the assumed camp. The distance between you and the two scouts from earlier grew every passing moment, and you did not even think twice. Besides, you might learn  a thing or two about the enemy. That is, if you don't get spotted immediately and get piled on by tons of imperial soldiers.

You walked for a short while, until inevitably, you had yourself revealed to another batch of scouts. Or maybe not. The soldiers this time seemed to be more battle-ready - they had their weapons drawn, and walked cautiously. Perhaps the two scouts should have returned by now, and these new soldiers were sent to investigate.

The moment they set sight upon you, you knew you can no longer turn back. It's do or die, now that you've been spotted. In your current state, this might prove to be a struggle, nevertheless, you must fight your way through this situation.

One of the soldiers, who wielded a long sword along with a medium-sized shield, pointed the edge of his blade towards you, and yelled, "It's a rebel! Get him!" His companion followed suit as they charged towards you.

You drew your sword. "Crea, guide me.", you muttered under your breath as you posed into a defensive stance. The time to fight, has finally arrived.

Hello everybody.

Now that we've entered combat, let me explain to you how it works.

If you take a look at the Info thread, you will see the profile of the current allied characters, along with the current protagonist/s. These profiles contain a number of various information about them, as well as their stats. Now, what are these stats for? They will depict how your combat goes.

Obviously, attack determines the power of your physical attacks & skills. Defense determines the strength of your defense against physical attacks. Magic determines the power of your magical skills & spells, whilst Resistance determines the strength of your defense against magic.

Your health, obviously, determines how much life you have. And when it runs out, you will be incapacitated and left at 1 life. During such time, when you run out of life once more, you will die. Don't worry, your allies will help you up. Once an incapacitated unit is helped up, they will regain 50% of their health, cut by half for every instance they get incapacitated in combat. Health regenerates only out of combat.

Your mana determines how much magical energy you have. You use this to cast spells, and when you run out, you won't be able to cast spells anymore, as well as get your resistance reduced by 25%. Mana, unlike health, regenerates in combat by 1% per turn, and far quicker when out of combat.

Now, combat will be done in turns & phases. Turns are the characters' actions, each character has a corresponding turn, and how fast they get their turn depends on a hidden stat. Phases, on the other hand, corresponds to the group of turns. A player phase will allow all the characters to do their turns, whilst an enemy phase grants the enemies their turns.

More will be expanded soon.

Question 1: We're vice-captain, experienced mercenary, and prepared to make history - clearly, we don't have a simple weapon like the average soldier. Instead, we're wielding our family sword, made of blackened steal - a bastard sword to go well with our stature, the familiy name engraved in the blade. Noone knows exactly why our grand grandfather, the old drunkyard, named it "Graceful Lilly", as it's written on the other side - the weapon is built for brutal strength rather than elegant maneuvers. But it has served us well thus far.

Question 2: The best offense is a good defen... - oh wait, that's not how it goes. CHARGE! Storm forward with a loud shout - "Get them!" - then throw yourself at them. We're wounded, and won't be able to win a long fight; better end it quickly.

That sword sounds alright. It was named ironically. I'd personally prefer a longsword (the real version, not the fantasy version. The fantasy version is actually an arming sword), but I can settle for a bastard sword.

I especially like the 'Get them!'. Make them think there might be others with us, if only briefly.

You charged towards them, shouting, "Get them!" And as if the goddess had answered your hidden prayers, the wind blew vigorously, causing the leaves and bushes around the area rustle.

The two soldiers, in turn, were surprised. The put their back against one another, each one facing the east, and the other to the opposite. Apparently, they thought you had some allies hiding around and waiting for the right moment to strike. They had forgotten to pay attention to you.

That was their biggest mistake. Despite your current state, you took very little time to reach them, and did not hesitate in striking them. With a swing of your sword, you struck down one of the two soldiers. Your blade ran from his left shoulder down to his lower waist, leaving no room for any retaliation. As the cut-down soldier fell to the ground, and into the depths of hell (most likely), you hopped backward, hoping to avoid getting hit by a counterattack, should the remaining soldier do so.

The remaining soldier, surprised once again, but by the death of his ally this time, stood there for a second. After that, he glared at you with such furious eyes, and his fists clenched. He raised his spear, and pointed its edge towards you, saying, "You bastard! I'll kill you!"

You took another step back, your sword raised, acting as a guard. Then, the soldier charged towards you. And as if your luck took a sudden turn, the pain in your back ringed once again, causing you to lose grip of your sword and drop it to the ground. But fate does not abandon you.

Hello again, lol.

Just some questions. I plan on using a combat log to show how much damage a character has dealt, if they dodged an attack, etc. Would you prefer it to be done here (in a spoiler, of course), or in a separate thread like the OOC and Info?

I will also keep track of the characters' stats as the QL goes on. It would be a small set of info (like BLANK stats in the upper right). Would you prefer it to be included in the combat logs, or in here?

2. This'll be good.

And I'd prefer you do it wherever is more convenient for you. If I have to choose, then putting it all in the spoiler would make for easy reference.
