The Rogue Glitch
Hi everybody! So..I recently started on digital art maybe a week or so ago and I need some help with shading on my character.

<p><a href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_07/image.jpg.ddd84e72c7afabe0978952c4936ea0f3.jpg" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="64801" src="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_07/image.jpg.ddd84e72c7afabe0978952c4936ea0f3.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p> This is my gemsona, Black Moonstone. He's named after his gem, not because he's black. It was an okay start for me, but I decided to do some revisions, see if I could make it a bit better.

<p><a href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_07/image.jpg.ec2c816639e02ae61e68836fc67af21a.jpg" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="64802" src="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_07/image.jpg.ec2c816639e02ae61e68836fc67af21a.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p> This is Black Moonstone, revised. His outfit has some modifications as well as and added background. I actually posed him after one of my favorite characters, who is irrelevant right now. His bottom arm on the right is bent, hence the two lines. His top arm is also bent, pretty sure you can all tell. As you can see, I have a long ways to go to make this perfect, but for those of oh who have digital experience, can you give me some advice for Black Moonstone revised?

I'm looking for shading advice in particular, but any other advice is greatly appreciated.

-Crota

Hi Son of Crota!

I'd like to point out that you have the right idea with the glows/highlights from the blue glow on your second drawing. However, with doing said glows, you need to keep in mind that glows will illuminate areas around, not just right by the glow. The illuminations also create shadows away from the glow point. in that particular work it seems as if you have multiple light sources, which can be tricky to pinpoint where and where not shadows and highlights should be. You want to acknowledge these light sources by drawing highlights nearby while also pointing shadows away. Like I said, it's a tricky concept to grasp, but it's something you will grow to learn as you study color theory and most importantly, practice. There's also some other things I'd recommend brushing up on, such as anatomy and general lineart. You're at a good start though and it's good to see what improvement you've made.. Happy drawing!
