Mission 02: Homeward [One Man Army]

OOc- That was beautiful *wioes tear*. Im inclined to make that speech = passed charm test.

IC-

"I have just dispatched 200 soldiers to your location, lord Tarlocke! They should be there momentarily. I have six gun cutters almost in the air, but I need you to hold firm for a few minutes!"

After the people respond to your speech with a cheer, the enforcers on the wall hunker into position, and a few more climb up. Governor Sarthol appears at your side.

"I was afraid you had perished, milord," he greets you. "I am most relievedcto see you alive." Sarthol is wearing carapace armour. He has a Scourge pattern boltgun that has been recently fired. He grabs two passing Enforcers. "You heard Lord Tarlocke! Get these civilians armed and form a reserve corps! Go!"

Moments later the first squad of Enforcers begins to fire on the infected...

"It is good to see you alive and in good health, Governor Sarthol! I had feared that you were trapped in your palace, and that we would have to carve a way through the infected hordes to find you," Tarlocke replied. Though his face was masked by the helmet, his tone made it clear that he was quite relieved to see the governor. "The Rogue Trader's men will soon be with us - two hundred men and six gun cutters. Now excuse me, Governor, I must man the walls."

Tarlocke promptly turned to climb up onto the wall, so that he stood face to face with the brunt of the infected horde. He readied his flamer.
OOC - Good thing I recently got Cleanse and Purify, amirite?

The horde is much more vast than you had imagined, numbering hundreds of infected, a testament to the awful power of Grandfather Nurgle. A plague so virulent tjat those infected succumb almost immediately, and the only cure to be found in so rapid an infection was death.

Your jet of purifying promethium holds back the tide of infected, and the wave of infected thins and withers to nothing under the concentrated firing of the enforcers lasguns.

In the gap between waves you see a group of about twenty civilians escorted by six Enforcers make a run for the compound. Then you have the gut wrenchinh realization that they arent going to make it. The six enforcers draw into a firing line, preparing to sell their lives dearly and yell at the civilians to keep running.

Your mad dash is echoed by volleys of lasfire. You faintly hear Sarthol yelling out orders, directing fire at your target.

You arrive before the wave of infected, placing yourself in front of the Enforcers. The wave is about 10 meters away. You have time for one shot before they are on you.

OOC- The first 'wave' is a horde of 20 infected. After you take your shot (flamer, bolter, grenade, or whatever, roll initiative)

Tarlocke lifted his flamer and fired it. "Behind me!" he barked out at the Enforcers.

OOC- I jusr now figured out that you took Cleanse and Purify as an Elite Advance. Thats fine, just in the future check with me first.

Your flamer does 2d5+5 to a horde, so add another d5.

OOC - Oh! I thought I did! Damn, that's me being a bit distant-minded! Sorry.

Correction on the rolls:

[dice]1911[/dice]
Like so? And is that a Righteous Fury I see (rolling a 5 in 1d5+5)?

Initiative!

[dice]1912[/dice]

Because you arent applying damage (vs horde those are straight up kills) I dont believe righteous fury applies. If I find anything different I will give a damage bonus in a later round to compensate.

You act first, the horde currently numbers 9

Tarlocke primed his flamer for another torrent of flames, and squeezed the trigger. The weapon roared.

[dice]1923[/dice]
OOC - WELL, THAT'S A SHAME.
"Run!" Tarlocke bellowed to the Enforcers, whilst the flames swallowed the infected.

OOC- by my count your flamer is at 50%

IC-

You turn to follow, shepherding the humans along, and realize as you turn that another crowd of infected has come up behind you, more than twice the number you just roasted....

Roll initiative. Anything over a 12 total and you act first.

OOC - It's about time, to be fair.

Initiative!

[dice]1935[/dice]
Tarlocke turned about to face the new horde of infected, and fired the flamer once again.

[dice]1936[/dice]

OOC- would you mond doing a quick count of Tarlockes wounds remaining? I have my hands full until lunch and I neglected to write it down

OOC - Tarlocke has taken 7 damage, landing on 14 Wounds from the initial 21.

He has also spent 2/6 Fate points.

OOC- I think you mean fate points.

IC- The horde of infected swarms you. Behind you, you hear the civilians screaming, and the crack of lasguns as the enforcers fire on infected.

They swarm over you, bludgeoning and hitting, and in the midst of the horde you take 7 more points of damage (OOC- no dodge or parry vs horde).

Roll initiative. Over 12 total and you go first.

Initiative!

"Fall back!" Tarlocke told the guardsmen, and then promptly broke from the combat - following his own advice by retreating from the oncoming infected horde.

(Disengage + Half Move)

OOC- I should have been more clear. When I mentioned things going on behind you I meant to infer that you are surrounded. You can break and fall back, but the horde will catch up on their action.

OOC - My bad, I'll redo it.

IC -

Tarlocke fired his flamer once again, attempting to force back the oncoming horde. "Kharos, I need support!"

[dice]1950[/dice]

OOC- whilst technically you can;t use a Basic weapon while engaged in melee, I will let it slide this time because I'm about to end the mission.

IC- The horde seemed to multiply, pressing down on Tarlocke despite the constant promethium flame he burned into them. Somehow he had managed to keep the humans with him alive, but it wouldn't be for much longer. Cariss would fall under this infection, and he would be naught but a name on a wall of honour...

Then light broke over Tarlocke. And explosions. And heat.

Overhead was the glorious shape of a gun cutter, its side-slung heavy stubbers roaring on full auto as Kharos' men laid into the horde. The cutters other weapons, main weapons, discharged in blasts of light and warhead fury.

"Get the up!" Kharos was in one of the cutters. They had lowered ladders and ropes and his soldiers were pulling up civilians. Half a dozen cutters quickly scooped up the survivors, and you are pulled aboard Kharos.

"Apologies my lord, for the delay in getting here. We came quickly as we could. I've got 300 men protecting the Revenge, and two hundred on the way here. Another four hundred will be deployed within the hour. Once we drop off these survivors, the cutters will spread out and support other pockets of survivors..."

Eventually, the nightmare ended. Sarthol immediately began rebuilding and cleaning, numbering and identifying dead and missing.

OOC- if you have any closing remarks, now is the time. I will prepare the mission 3 briefing soon.

OOC - That was my bad, bad brainfart. The rule completely slipped my mind.

"You came as quickly as you could," Tarlocke agreed, slumping into an open seat. The space marine looked back out of the craft, watching the city zooming past him. "What matters is that we gave this city a fighting chance, Kharos. And it fought," he said. He was very ready to set a course for the Watch Fortress now.
