Losing a parent was unlike anything else, and it seemed the three girls of Ashborough knew that better than most others. Katarina still relived the night she lost her mother in her nightmares nearly every night. She felt the heat of the flames on her skin, inhaled the bitter taste of smoke into her lungs, smelled the putrid stench of burning plastic and singed hair. She watched her house burn down over and over again, serving as some sort of reminder of what her magic had the potential to do. A few years back, Kat had created a rune to quell the nightmares, practically made it so she didn't have any dreams at all. At first, it was torture. Going to sleep and waking up with what seemed like nothing in between. She was constantly exhausted, and so she made a rune for that too. Something like a triple shot of espresso activated with a simple wave of her hand. Eventually, it all got easier. That is, until this jumble with magic acting up began. Now she was back to nightmares and restless nights.

Clover lost her mother after Harley had left, right around the time she and Kat became friends. Cancer was a bitch, and it always would be. Kat did her best to be there for her friend, but it brought up a lot of memories for her that she didn't quite know how to deal with. And now Harley was in the same boat. Unfortunately, her old friend didn't have the same magic to help her deal with it. At least, not that Kat knew of anyway. But then again, things could change in over a decade, couldn't they? Whatever the case, even though Harley had been gone for so long, Katarina still felt like they were old friends, they still shared that same bond over music and kindergarten playground scuffles that began all those years ago. She knew how it felt to lose a parent, and pretty much her entire family. She knew how it felt to be alone. So, she wanted to be there for her friend in her time of mourning, even if they hadn't spoken in nearly half of their lives.

Katarina took a step back as others went into console Harley, adjusting the bag across her body before slipping her hands into the front pockets of her black skinny jeans. Turquoise blue eyes slipped over to Elliot at his suggestion of Phill's and she nodded, knowing they could probably all use a drink to take the edge off. Especially Alek and Clover, who seemed to have an aura of bitterness practically radiating off of them. It was true, that nothing had moved in Ashborough in the ten years or so Harley had been gone. A few new places were open, and some had closed. But generally, the town had stayed the same. Some thought that to be boring, but Kat found it rather comforting. When life felt hectic, it was nice to know she had a handful of familiar places to go to clear her head. They took off towards the pub, and it wasn't long before they were sliding into their designated booth. The waitress came, taking the orders before leaving their table in silence, and Harley was quick to notice.

Monty's follow-up words caused Katarina to stifle a laugh behind her hand, glancing over at her clairvoyant friend. He had always been the shy type, but their conversations allowed them both to relax some. It was all platonic, but meaningful. The waitress returned with their drinks, and Kat pulled the glass of Long Island Iced Tea to her lips, taking a sip through the plastic straw. The bitter taste of the multitude of alcohols mixed with cola was a comfort spot for her, her favorite beverage. It was the type of drink that you order when you want to either take the edge of or forget the night altogether. Katarina savored the flavor for a moment, letting it calm the nerves that were struck from the town hall meeting. She wanted this whole 'uncontrollable magic' thing to be over just as bad as everyone else. But she didn't know how to fix it. At least the alcohol might take her mind off of it for a moment. "It's nice to have the old squad back together again," Kat said, trying to save Monty from himself. "Especially with everything in town seeming to go crazy."

With Clover's hand still in his, Aleksander was thankful his girlfriend kept the words he knew she wanted to say to herself. Sure, it was common knowledge that they were dating. Or that they had been together off-and-on since high school anyway. When they were "on" was usually anyone's guess, but their intertwined fingers were generally a good signal. But Harley had left far before Clover and Alek started their relationship, and so, unless she had been checking in with one of their old friends, she most likely wouldn't have known. The way she responded solidified that fact, her tone brusque as the personal trainer saw her eye his and Clover's hands. With her arms crossed over her chest, he could feel the tension building there, only worsening as she realized what that meant. She mouthed the words "I see," and Aleksander knew then that Harley had put the pieces together. He and Clover were an item, and the iciness in her gaze when their eyes met only fueled the fire in his veins.

Nevertheless, the redheaded man couldn't help but feel sorry for his old friend. Losing a parent couldn't be easy. Alek didn't necessarily know firsthand. It wasn't that his mother was dead, rather that she decided to disown him and send him and his father on their way. As far as he knew, she was still alive as was his sister. But he hadn't heard from either of them since the day he and his father left. Aleksander did have to grieve their loss, but not in the same way he knew some of the others had. Clover lost her mother to cancer, Katarina to a fire. Elliot's parents were never around, to begin with. Despite all that, however, Aleksander still had his father to rely on. Still had a parent that loved and cared about him, someone who understood the magic that flowed through his veins and helped him deal with it. When everything started going to shit, and he had to hesitate every time he needed to touch something, Aleksander went to his father for guidance. But even the older Strand was at a loss about the whole situation.

They began to walk towards Phill's, the pub their small group frequented when they needed to share a couple of drinks or a quick bite. So much so, that they practically had their own round booth in the back of the corner. Monty happily claimed it for them, and Alek slid in alongside his girlfriend. He ordered a pilsner from the waitress, letting the silence slide over the table. The shy brunette's comment about his girlfriend made Alek grin, despite the anger he was feeling. He knew about the relationship Clover and Monty shared, how he was some type of minion for her. As much as the redhead tried to talk her out of it, she refused. It wasn't hard to tell Monty had a bit of a crush, but he had never been all that worried about it. She was hard to handle, and as much as he cared about his buddy, he couldn't help but think Clover would eat him alive if she had the chance. Kat spoke up then, and Alek couldn't say he disagreed. Some part of him, deep down, was happy to see Harley. He just couldn't acknowledge that part.

Clover Lexington
Having Harley back brought a lot of memories. They all created a whirlpool of thoughts in Clover’s head and she was trying to make something of it. The two girls used to be great friends. So much so that in her vivid dreams and ideas, Harley was going to be Clo’s maid of honor when that day was going to come at some point in the future. Clover couldn’t imagine life without Harley in it until it happened. One day, the two were planning their friendship for hundred years ahead and the next one, Harley was gone, leaving Clover alone in the crowd. As far as Clo was concerned, this was not how friendships worked. The two were supposed to be friends until their hair turned gray and Harley simply vanished. It was a way too bitter pill for Clover to swallow.

Unaware of the relationship between her former best friend and her current boyfriend, Clover just squeezed Alek’s hand before anything went down and the look in Harley’s eyes couldn’t have been missed. Her eyes found the intertwined fingers and the face spoke without words. At least Elliot proved not to be absolutely worthless all the time because his idea to go to Phil’s was actually a good one and also very much welcome. It definitely seemed they all needed a drink or a few and Phil’s was the perfect place to go. In the course of the years, it became some kind of meeting point for the small group of friends where they hung out, had dinners or drinks. The Friends had Central Perk, How I Met Your Mother had MacLaren’s Pub and the Ashborough kids had Phil’s. It was almost poetic.

Walking in, Clover was hit with the familiar scent of the place and something was telling her there was not just one of them. Phil’s was the place which smelled to everyone differently and to Clover, it was old leather, oatmeal pancakes and strawberry milkshake. Their regular booth was empty and so they piled in. Clover ended up sitting between Monty and Alek and she leaned closer to the latter, resting her hand on his thigh. Her possessive nature was slowly showing, protruding through all those layers of her personality. And while to some it might have been just an innocence gesture, the fact that it was Clover caused that it packed so much more.

Silence fell on the table and it started to become awkward. The only time the group spoke was when they ordered drinks. Harley commented on it and once again, Clover had to bit her tongue way too hard not to comment on that. Seriously, she was outdoing herself there, give the girl a medal! Then Monty spoke, praising her appearance. The brunette flashed him a charming white smile before inspecting her blue velvety top, ripped jeans and black suede thigh-high boots. “Why thank you, Montgomery. It’s very nice of you to notice.” She sent him a wink and looked around the table, seeing some of them trying to contain their grins.

Soon, their drinks arrived and Clover took her dry martini, taking a tiny sip to taste it first. No matter how many times she ordered it, she always gave it a taste to see whether it was the true Bond drink or just some cheap wannabe. Well, she was British through and through. What Harley said and Kat confirmed had her thinking. It had been too long since they all were together. Was it even possible to mend the cracks and just get over it? Heaving a soft sigh, Clover took another sip before setting the glass down. “How long are you staying this time, love?” she spoke to Harley in a sweet tone, laced with the tiniest bit of spice. After all, she’d been burnt before, hadn’t she?

Elliot Prescott
Elliot Prescott was a lot of things. And not many of those things could be considered a positive description of his personality, sure, he was very much aware of that. But he was also a friend. That friend who was always by your side, he always supported you, offered a shoulder to cry on, was loyal to the bone whether you hung out every day or once a year. Once he became your friend, you knew it was friendship for life. And the same applied to the homecoming blonde who definitely seemed she needed a friend. Even despite Monty and Kat being genuinely glad to see her, the overall meeting seemed to be cold and slowly freezing.

Whatever Alek and Clover had going on in their heads, it was their issue. Elliot decided to focus on Harley and make sure the day only got better from here. He never knew his parents and until this day, the tattooed boy was convinced they were either some crazed hippies or a couple of druggies. One way or another, they were colossal assholes who abandoned a newborn, leaving him on the doorstep of an orphanage. Apparently, they were not able to take care of a teeny tiny baby and while the foster system was not the greatest, Elliot was definitely better off there than with his biological parents. Thanks to his experience, he never really got attached to anyone the way a child would to its parents. So finding out Harley’s mom died, he couldn’t even imagine how it felt and how much grief was hidden inside Harley. Still, he proposed a drink and the whole group agreed.

They walked to Phil’s together, claiming their usual booth. Elliot grabbed a place by Alek’s side and looked at everyone, one by one, examining their faces, trying to read the emotions. He needed to keep himself occupied under all circumstances otherwise, this whole place might soon turn into a scene from a horror movie. His powers were unstable and Elliot was becoming emotional. The combo was less than ideal and unless the boy wanted dead people to start coming back to life, he needed to focus on other things.

It was Monty, though, who provided the most perfect distraction in the end. His words towards Clover put a wide cheeky grin to Elliot’s lips and he had his reply ready within seconds. Monty was, of course, flustered and Clover answered him in her usual way, possibly making Monty blush even more. Their drinks arrived and Elliot’s pint of beer was immediately calling his name so without any further hesitation, he lifted the glass up, meeting his lips, and took a long pull, almost downing half of that stuff in one go. Just as Clover asked her question. Apparently, that was her idea of breaking the silence Harley had pointed out. Suppressing a groan, Elliot looked at Harley. “You know you don’t have to react to her provocations, right?” he mumbled, earning himself an icy look from the bitch. “Why don’t you tell us what you’ve been up to, blondie? We are dying to know. Or at least most of us are.” he looked at the girl, offering a reassuring smile.

harley jade.

Harley had never been the type to bite her tongue, and that hadn't changed in the years she'd been gone. Sure, it got her into trouble sometimes, but if she didn't display her blatant honesty, she wouldn't be Harley. The walk to Phil's was silent, and Harley had started to wonder if finding her friends had even been such a good idea. Sure, three of them were happy to see her. Kat, Elliot and Monty were as amazing as ever. But sometime during the years she'd been gone, Alek and Clover had apparently started dating and it was clear to Harley they were quite angry with her. But were they angry because she left? Because she didn't keep in touch? Or did it have something to do with jealousy?

Deciding not to linger on those thoughts, she brought up how silent the table was. Monty was the first to speak after that, and his cute babbling caused a small laugh to escape Harley. He was right, though, Clover did look amazing. She'd always been well put together, but the last few years had really caused her to grow into herself and she looked right proper. Yeah, with Alek hanging on her hand like the most perfect accessory. The snark in her own inner voice surprised her, because she and Alek had never been a thing. Maybe it was the fact that she and Alek had been friends since childhood and now they were practically strangers. It hurt Harley, just like Clover's icy words and tone hurt.

Monty hid his face in his hands, and Kat was the next to speak. Harley looked over at her, reaching for her Blue Motorcycle the bartender had brought to them. Sipping at the sweet drink full of different liquors, she tilted her head when she set her drink back down. "What do you mean, everything going crazy?" She asked, glancing around at the others. No one else seemed bothered by her words, but as far as Harley knew, Ashborough was one of the most boring towns out there. "If something is going crazy here, definitely fill me in. I need the tea." She drummed her fingers on her glass, but instead of someone answering her question, Clover asked how long she'd be sticking around.

The jab in her question was obvious, and Harley looked back over at her, the drumming of her fingers slowing. "I'm here to stay, actually." She admitted, the reason why flashing in her mind. Even though her public humiliation hadn't been on a nationwide scale, a simple search of her name would reveal the images that had gotten leaked of her online. Quickly shoving those thoughts aside, she looked over at Elliot when he asked what she'd been up to. "I can understand her anger." She told him, purposefully not looking at Clover as she said it. "I'd probably be angry too." Shrugging, she leaned forward to sip at her straw again. "I've just been traveling alot with my dad, really. Trying to get a career started in music." She left out why it failed, looking around at the others. "Tell me. Why are you all still here? I would have thought some of you would have been long gone by now."

Somehow Monty always seemed to be the one to embarrass himself, no matter what he tried to do or say. The compliment to Clover slipped out of his lips before he could stop it, and he immediately felt the warmth flood his face, especially when Harley laughed and the others grinned. Clover seemed to appreciate his compliment, as she turned to him and told him it was nice of him to notice. "Anytime." He mumbled, his head jerking up as he realized what he'd said. "I mean, not anytime-- Alek, I-- I'm not staring at your--" His voice died in his throat and he buried his face in his hands yet again, wishing a hole would open up under him and swallow him on the spot. As it was, though, no such thing happened and he was forced to live with himself.

When Kat said it was nice to have everyone back, Monty finally lifted his head and nodded. "I agree." He smiled at the waitress handed him his soda. Sticking his straw in, he sucked at it happily, though he nearly choked when Kat mentioned the things around town going crazy. Harley picked up on it and asked, but before Monty could open his mouth and stick his foot in it further, Clover asked-- in her icy princess tone-- how long Harley was going to stick around. Monty's head whipped in her direction, his eyes widening, but Harley took her comment in stride. Elliot earned himself an evil look from the Brit when he commented on her attitude to Harley, but he didn't seem bothered by it.

Then he asked what Harley had been up to, and Monty looked back at the girl as she answered the questions. Then she turned it back around on the others, and Monty shrugged, feeling his body relax some at the change in conversation. "Well, my parents are still here." Monty shrugged, slurping at his pop again. "Can't go anywhere. They wouldn't survive without me." He grinned, then realized his comments might have come off a little insensitive. "Sorry." He added, setting his drink back down on the table. Leaning forward, he looked around at the others, realizing that Kat was right. It was definitely nice to have the group together again, even if some were happier than others.

"Oh!" Monty exclaimed suddenly, straightening in his seat as he remembered something. Turning back to the gorgeous girl next to him, a slight grin appearing on his lips. "Remember those shoes you said you wanted, Clover?" He twisted some as he pulled his phone from his pocket, pushing a few buttons on it before he turned it towards her. "I found them. Super expensive, though, I don't know why you'd wanna pay that much for them-" He trailed off as he saw the look on her face, feeling that familiar warmth flood him. Not from embarrassment this time, but from a job well done. Why he'd been looking up shoes of all things, he had no idea, but Clover had asked and well, he wanted to find them for her.

The burning sensation of the mixture of alcohols slid down her throat as Katarina took another sip, savoring the warmth in her stomach that it set off. It was autumn, and beginning to cool off. So, there was nothing quite like the comforting feeling of a cocktail with friends at their regular spot. Even so, tension hung in the air like a dark cloud, so thick that she was fairly certain she could cut with a knife were it a tangible thing. Despite the alcohol on the table, it seemed like some were far less willing to take the edge off than others, and that meant awkward silence. Elliot and Clover were practically at each other's throats, though only with words, and it took everything thing in Kat not to pull the "We're all friends here" card. As much as she wanted to believe that they all truly were friends, she knew that some of them were only together because of relationships or the bond of the Circle.

Kat hadn't even realized what she had said until Harley brought it up again. "What do you mean, everything going crazy?" her returned friend said, glancing around. They had been dealing with the magic interference for what seemed like so long that Katarina didn't even stop to think about her words. She knew they were trying to keep things in house, the true reasons behind the strange phenomenons in town as secrets. So none of the others had even stopped to catch her words. "Oh," the brunette responded, backtracking a bit as she tried to come up with a story. She might as well tell Harley the truth, or most of it anyway while leaving out some important details. Harley would probably read about it in the newspaper or hear rumors through the mill or something soon anyway. "There's just been a lot of crazy shit happening around town. A ton of strange coincidences, increases in petty crime, things disappearing without a trace. They had a town hall meeting about it earlier tonight."

Katarina was one of the lucky ones in the group in that her magic was largely based on her creations. So, to curb her runes going awry, all she had to do was just not create any more. The main problem she ran into, however, was the runes she had already created. As much as she hated to destroy art, she burned or shredded as many as she could. But there were some that she couldn't break, either physically or fundamentally. Over the years, Kat had begun to build her runes into the town and the people around her. Given charms to some to help them with their struggles, or etched symbols into stone for protection of the town from outside forces. Hell, every ceramic pot she had ever made had a rune of unbreaking etch into the bottom. So, all were ticking time bombs waiting to shatter into a million pieces. Some of the others had more physical powers, like Alek trying not to transmute everything he touched or Clover not setting the entire town on fire with a snap of her fingers.

Pulling from her thoughts by her friend's words, Kat couldn't help her face from lighting up in excitement. "Staying for good? That's fantastic! Where are you staying? At the old house? It'll be so great to--" she began, but cut herself off when she realized she was rambling and probably speaking too fast for anyone to even understand her. "Sorry," the brunette said sheepishly, taking another sip from her drink as her cheeks flushed a light pink. "I'm just glad you're back." Harley's follow-up question was one that Kat could have predicted. After all, it was strange that they were still in town. She had always talked about going away to art school, and Alek wanted to go off to play college ball, maybe make it pro. But there they were, exactly where they had been over a decade before. She knew they had mostly stayed because of their shared magic and the Circle. But she had other reasons too and decided to focus more on those. "I wanted to stay with my family," Katarina responded with a shrug, referring both to her friends as well as the headstones in the town cemetery that marked her mother and grandmother's remains. It wasn't a complete lie, but it wasn't the entire truth either.

imagine dragons

whatever it takes

Aleksander let out a breath he hadn't realized he had been holding when the waitress returned, setting a lowball glass of amber liquid in front of him alongside Elliot's beer. While one arm was slung around the back of the booth behind Clover, the other hand reached out for the glass. But just before his fingertips brushed it, he paused. His brow furrowed as he began to concentrate, more on instinct than anything else now. Since the whole ordeal with uncontrollable magic began, it had become routine to make sure he was focused before touching anything. After a moment, Alek grabbed the glass and pulled it towards him, bringing it to his lips for a sip. The smoky amber liquid relaxed his muscles just a touch, and Alek sat the glass back on the table, barely gripping it. As an adult, bourbon was the drink his father and he shared whenever they were talking about something serious. At first, it was his injury and college, and then about his mom and sister, and most recently about the town magic. It was almost nostalgic in a way.

Alek felt like he was the middleman, stuck between his best friend and his girlfriend. He was fully aware they didn't like one another, and so he tried to keep things as civil between them as he possibly could. Which was hilarious, considering he was usually the hotheaded and rash one. His whole life, he had had a bit of a temper. Some might say it was because he was a natural-born leader or a perfectionist, and Alek didn't think they were entirely wrong. He liked things to be a certain way, preferred when his team followed his orders and didn't stray from the plan. When it came to being in charge of something, he had a 'my way or the highway' type of attitude, and usually came out on top because of it. As he got older, though, there were fewer and fewer situations where those instincts were necessarily needed. As a personal trainer, his job did include motivation and perfectionism. But he usually had to dilute it for his clients, not put on too much heat for fear that they'll burn out and stop training with him. That meant a loss of money, and potentially a bad reputation.

Aleksander glanced over at Kat as she mentioned the strange phenomenons happening around town, knowing some of them had been his doing. He wasn't necessarily proud of it, but it also wasn't something he could control. He shrugged it off, instead focusing his attention on Harley's follow-up question. "My dad's still here, coaches the high school football team now," he answered a bit nonchalantly, taking another sip from his glass. "And my girlfriend and friends too. Besides, after the injury, no college team would take me. So, stuck in Ashborough it is," Alek added with a dry chuckle. It had been years, but the football injury was still a sore spot for him. It hadn't really occurred to him yet that Harley had left before that happened, and probably had no idea. That single moment had practically crushed his dreams, and it still hurt to think about. But Aleksander hid that pain behind dry humor and jokes as ways to cope. At least Monty was around to lighten the mood, telling Clover about the shoes he found. A smirk curved the corners of his lips as Alek light-heartedly teased his brunette friend, "C'mon man, you can't give my girlfriend better gifts than me. You're making me look bad."

Clover Lexington
It was rather weird to be sitting around their usual table and talk like old friends. Although they were not exactly friends anymore. At least not all of them. Tension was everywhere and awkward lines were dropped, trying to keep some half-decent conversation flowing. The whole atmosphere was so thick one could literally cut it with a knife and Clover was honestly doing her best, trying her hardest, not to say anything that would put a crack into this whole fragile illusion of peace among friends. And with her, it was always hard because honestly, most of the time she had no idea why people were angry. For all she knew, she was only being honest with them. It was not her fault people were too touchy and couldn’t handle the harsh truth, right?

Her long fake nails drummed on the glass containing her drink. Her lips were slightly pursed after Harley spoke about her anger and how she herself would be angry and yada yada yada. But it was the blonde who left, Clover was still here. And so was everyone else. And maybe the young Brit would not feel this way, had the two girls not been such good friends before. Now, the brunette simply felt hurt. She lost her friend, her closest confidant, someone she could always count on. Harley left and Clover was left alone.

Hearing the question Harley had for everyone, Clover’s jaw tensed a little. Why was she still here, indeed? Did she even have an answer for that? Well, she did. The question was whether it was really true or just something she kept telling herself. As Alek mentioned her in his answer, Clo’s fingers gave his thigh a soft squeeze and she looked at him, smiling widely. “Obviously, I’d never leave my man. And since my no-good twin brother decided to run, it’s up to me to keep the Lexington name up and take over the family business once daddy decides to leave. That’s why I’m still here. I won’t allow my legacy to go up in flames.” she shrugged, only then realizing the hidden meaning in her words and how that could very well happen. Literally.

It was Monty’s comment which brought a bit better mood to the table. Him mentioning shoes made Clover’s head jerk up in his direction. She snatched the phone from his hand and used two fingers to zoom in. “You really did find them.” she breathed as her eyes sparkled with excitement. “Darling, these? These are not expensive at all. These are worth every penny.” she winked and leaned closer to place a soft kiss of thanks on Monty’s cheek. “You’re the best.” Alek added his comment which made Clover giggle and she leaned into him, tilting her head back to purr. “Well, he found them, you can buy them now. ‘Tis almost the season, you know.” she drawled in a sultry voice, kissing his jaw but with way more affection than the kiss on Monty’s cheek. It wasn’t like she couldn’t afford a pair of Louboutins on her own but if her boyfriend wanted to make her happy, who was she to stop him?

Elliot Prescott
It was possibly the very carefree nature that allowed Elliot not to be all flustered and nervous in a situation like this. His whole life, he got into enough weird moments and there were not many things that could surprise him now. And while he was kind of surprised by this amazing homecoming of one Harley Jade, to him it was just a cherry on top for the whole fair. The second he noticed her, he forgot about stalls, fair food and funky shit, he just wanted to go say hello to his wayward friend.

But as they sat around the table now, El was very much aware of the tension and animosity there. Mostly coming from the resident bitch by his best friend’s side though. He could totally strangle her with the chains dangling around her neck if Alek was not so smitten. Or whatever that relationship even was. Elliot was actually counting days until their next huge falling out, hoping it would be the final one. Meanwhile, he turned his gaze back at Harley, his lips forming his typical smirk. “You know, I for one am extremely excited to have you back. Could use a partner in crime while Alek here is busy with…eh, busy.” he ended his sentence, trying hard not to sound snarky.

Kat’s little statement was still lingering in the air and Elliot couldn’t stop thinking about it. Was it all really going to go to hell? Gee, he hoped not because he really had a good thing going here. After way too much time being on the unlucky side, he really wanted to finally enjoy that fun streak without any interruptions. At this point, he had it all. A job he loved, girls to warm his bed every night, friends he loved being around and this sick superpower which made him feel better about himself. Though it was a bit bugged at this point, he was sure there had to be a way to fix it somehow.

“See…I never left because where would I go? This place is my home, I have everything I need here. I’m no big city high life dude. This has been enough for years now so I guess, I can pull a few more. Plus, all the best people are here, am I right?” he grinned and Kat, resting his arm around her as they sat. “And now you’re here too so one more reason not to leave.” Situation on the other side of the table was looking a bit lighter but to Elliot, it seemed like Clover was making it all about her. Again. “Well, we’re doing shots. And I’m not taking no for an answer.” Elliot declared suddenly, standing up. And a few moments away, he was back with a tray full of colorful shots. “I have no idea what they all are, don’t ask, just drink. Cheerio!” he toasted and emptied one glass. “Welcome home, sweetcheeks.” he then winked at Harley, tossing another shot down his throat. Maybe it was even going to numb his magic as well. Or not and the town of Ashborough would experience the real night of the walking dead.

Not that Harley had never dealt with uncomfortable situations before, but this one seemed to take the cake. She loved each and every person at this table dearly, but only about half of them were happy to see her again. It really hurt Harley that Alek was so cold towards her, and she couldn't help but feel like it had something to do with his current relationship. Seriously, what the hell was that about? It definitely wasn't something Harley had seen coming. But it seemed that she had missed more than that since she'd been gone, and she had quite a lot to catch up on. When Kat answered her question about why she wanted to stay, Harley offered her a sympathetic smile. "I can understand that." She told her softly, her thoughts already moving on from Kat's comments about the happenings around town.

Alek spoke next, and it didn't escape Harley's notice that he put Clover in an entirely separate category. But something else caught her attention more. "Injury?" She tilted her head, leaning back in her seat to look at him. "What happened?" Her voice had softened, giving Monty a chance to jump in and show Clover some pair of shoes he'd found for her. Alek joked about how Monty was making him look bad, but Harley just scoffed as she sipped at her blue drink again. Clover mentioned something about the family legacy and Harley looked back at her, but again, something else caught her attention. "Your brother ran away?" She swirled her straw in her drink, glancing down at the table. "Man, I really did miss alot." Clover cared more about the shoes though, and as she looked over at Alek to say he could buy them as a present, Harley couldn't stop herself from commenting.

"Really? Can't afford the shoes yourself?" She knew she was being snarky, and no, it wasn't like she knew what Alek's financial situation was. But she knew Clover's; everyone did. It was around that time that Elliot threw in his two cents, and she threw a grateful smile his way when he said her being back was another reason not to leave. But then suddenly he was standing, announcing that they were doing shots, not giving anyone a chance to refuse before he left to go get them. He returned a few short minutes later and Harley stared at the colorful shots. "Alright. Fuck it. Could use something to make this less awkward." She reached for a purple shot, staring down into it for a second before she tossed it back, making a face afterwards. "Welcome home indeed." She shot back at Elliot, setting the shot glass back down on the tray.

Monty hated the tension at the table, and he especially hated that it was coming from Clover mostly. And Alek, too. It was like they were the bitchy tag team over there, touching and being sweet on each other while being dicks to everyone else at the table. But of course, Monty couldn't admit that he was slightly jealous as well, not just angry that they were being rude. That thought hadn't even crossed his mind, because in his mind, Clover was just a friend. That was it, and that was all she'd ever be. That's what he'd had to convince himself of, because if he hadn't, he would have gone crazy a long time ago. He brought up the shoes to try and break some of that tension, but also to distract from Kat's semi slip-up. She covered herself well, though, and it wasn't like the happenings around town were a secret. Just the magic part was a secret.

Clover was ecstatic that he found the shoes. She snatched the phone from him, zooming in to inspect them to ensure they were the right ones. But of course they were, Monty knew nothing about shoes but he could find just about anything on the web. She leaned in to thank him with a kiss on the cheek, and suddenly he regretted telling her about them here because what was that? His face burned and his eyes shot over to Alek, but he was distracted-- thank god-- by his girlfriend telling him he could buy them for her as a present. Harley shot a comment Clover's way, and Monty's eyes widened as he looked between the two, sending out a silent SOS to the others at the table. Elliot seemed to pick up on the vibe, because he suddenly announced shots and went to grab a tray full of them.

"Uh... no thanks." Monty slunk back into his seat more, reaching for his soda to sip at it while the others reached for one of the colorful shots. Some of them looked like juice, but Monty knew better than to make that mistake. Again. He kept his soda in both hands as he looked around, thinking back to the conversation so far. Clover had brought up her brother which of course made Monty think of his, but he wasn't going to bring either of them back up. It was a touchy subject even if Clover wanted to pretend that it wasn't, and Monty himself was still affected by his brother being presumed dead. The shots slowly began to disappear and Monty set his drink back on the table, leaning closer to inspect one closer to him. "Why is it yellow?" He asked, wrinkling his nose as he tilted his head this way and that. "It's not carbonated so I know it's not a Mountain Dew. What liquor is yellow?"

Though there were still some tensions, things seemed to be looking up. At least, until Clover mentioned her twin brother and his disappearance. Katarina was so caught off guard that she nearly choked as she took another sip from her Long Island Iced Tea. She hid a cough behind her hand, taking a moment to breathe and try to calm her racing heart. Before the brunette had gotten to know her sassy, upper-class friend, she had known her brother far better. To that day, Kat hadn't told Clover about what Arthur and she got into, what he had asked her to do, and the path that he seemed to be going down. In many ways, she felt guilty. After all, she didn't talk him out of it and instead helped him. For some reason, even after reading all the fairy tales and fantasy novels, watching all the movies, it had never really clicked in her mind that, if magic was real, so was the concept of dark magic. Sure, those stories paint pictures of villains using the less-than-savory types of magic, like hexes and blood magic, as evil. But Katarina had never believed those things to be true. At least, not until she saw what it was doing to Arthur, what it was trying to do to her too.

To that day, she had wondered what Arthur had done with the runes she created for him. Curiosity ate away at her, but never enough for her to try and recreate them herself. She had no idea if she would be able to come back from something like that again. Especially now that magic was running rampant around town. Thankfully, even though Harley asked about Clover's brother, the topic of conversation moved on, and Kat once again pushed those thoughts and feelings to the recesses of her mind. Some more snarky comments were thrown around the group, and Kat could tell that Monty was just as uncomfortable with the situation as she was. One of her major character flaws was her anxious nature, and that certainly translated over to times of conflict. The brunette just wanted their little group of friends back, but it seemed as though that ideal wasn't in reach. At least not in the current state of soberness. Elliot pulled her from her thoughts, slinging his arm around her shoulders as he too answered Harley's question. She returned his grin, feeling her mood instantly lighten as she rolled her eyes playfully. Almost as if he read her mind, Elliot shot up to retrieve a tray of shots, each with its own distinct hue.

Each time he shot what could be perceived as a flirtatious comment in Harley's direction, Kat could feel something like a small weight settling in her stomach. But, she ignored it, just like she did each time he told her about a new conquest. "Shots it is," the brunette cheered, grabbing a green shot and throwing it back. It was fruity, probably some sort of watermelon liqueur and, for the most part not terrible. She sat the glass rim down on the tray, letting out a light laugh as Monty inspected the yellow shot. "Come on, Monty, haven't you ever heard of limoncello before?" Katarina asked, winking at him before grabbing the shot and throwing it back like the first. Immediately, she was met with what tasted like straight rubbing alcohol and cringed. "Okay, definitely not limoncello," she said, shaking her head. Like the first, she returned the glass to her tray, chasing the gross shot with a large drink of her Long Island. So, maybe chasing liquor with more liquor wasn't the best idea. But some of her more interesting art pieces came from a less-than-sober mind, and best decisions too. Like the tattoo on her sternum peeking through the v-neckline of her blouse. "So, Harley, any plans, now that you're back in town?"

Aleksander had never been exactly "well-off" growing up, and certainly nowhere near the social and financial status that his girlfriend currently possessed. His father was well-versed in magic, yes. But he rarely if ever used that to his advantage. Hell, when Alek was injured, his father wanted him to live with it to teach him a lesson on the consequences of magic, thus forcing the redhead to find other methods of healing in Kat. Magic had pretty much been the reason for Nils Strand's downfall, losing him his home, his marriage, and one of his children. And, for a while, Aleksander found himself agreeing with the old man. High school coaches don't exactly make the big bucks, and so Alek had to pave his way through his job as a personal trainer. It didn't land him the bank account of a prominent CEO. But, it was enough to pay the bills as well as generally keep his girlfriend happy, at least during their "on" times, which, if he were being honest, were becoming less often and shorter as time went on.

The softness in Harley's tone caught his attention, and Alek turned his light brown gaze back to his brunette childhood friend. For a moment, the look of concern in her eyes brought him back to that time over a decade ago, and he felt the anger in his heart dissipate. His lips parted to explain, open up and tell her about one of the worst days in his life. But, Monty quickly hopped in before he could. Clover leaned into him, kissing his jaw in the affectionate way she had when she really wanted something. Alek glanced down at the phone screen, hiding his reaction of mild shock when he saw the price tag associated with those shoes. He had known from the beginning that Clo liked expensive things, knew fully what he was walking into. She could pay for them herself, sure. But, with their relationship on good terms, it was his duty to keep her happy. Besides, he had made extra tips that month and had a good chunk of money set aside in his savings account. It was for the gym business he eventually planned on opening. But, what was $800 if it meant his girlfriend was happy?

"Sure, I'll get them for you," Alek agreed, planting a kiss on the crown of her head. He knew that his friends might not get it. Their relationship wasn't exactly stable. Some might even call it toxic. But Alek was already in so deep, and he truly did care about Clover. Was it love? He wasn't so sure. But it was certainly some sort of close, positive feelings. Thankfully, Elliot cleared the air with a tray of shots, which was sure to loosen everyone up a bit. Aleksander reached for the red and bright orange ones, throwing them back before returning the glasses to their tray. The rainbow of liquor was quickly disappearing, and it was only a matter of time before inhibitions followed suit. The mini cocktails combined with the class of straight bourbon had certainly started to fog his mind a bit. So, when Katarina asked about Harley's plans, he had sort of forgotten about the angry grudge he had, at least for the time being. "Ricky Carpenter is throwing one of his riverside bonfire parties tonight. You could always come with us."

Despite everything that was happening, it looked like things were going rather well. At least now as they were having their drinks. Maybe not everyone was happy with Harley being back but they could at least keep it civil and not go into useless arguments which would only bring chaos and mayhem. Clover was sipping her little lady drink, curled up by Alek’s side. Their good phases were always amazing. All cuddly and sweet and they definitely looked like a magazine couple to set an example for everyone. The shoes were just another whim of the brunette beauty and she definitely didn’t need another pair of the expensive red-sole sandals but they were a limited edition and just so cute and adorable that she could already see them complete her vast collection perfectly. She even had a place for them in her closer at this point and Monty was the biggest sweetheart for finding them. Now she just needed to be quick and order them before they were sold out. She turned to Alek, half-joking he could get them for her but then he agreed which honestly surprised her a little. Then again, who was she to stop him from making her happy?

Though her happiness did not last long when Harley spoke up again. “Really? Can’t afford the shoes yourself?” she asked with a snark-filled voice which wiped the satisfied smile from Clover’s face. She straightened her back and looked at Harley, balling her fists. Fire in her veins started to burn a bit more and while the heiress knew she simply had to remain calm, her eyes glimmered with rage. “Nobody likes a sour bitch, sweetheart,” she spat at the blonde and squeezed her fists even more, leaving nail imprints in her palms. They hurt like a mother fucker since Clo wore fake nails but at this point, she didn’t care. It seemed like it got a bit darker outside and the door flew open, bringing in a strong wind that was definitely not blowing before. Only that sound of bells over the door ringing like insane brought Clover out of her trance and she started to breathe properly.

Elliot decided to make himself useful at least once in his miserable life and proposed the shots and when he returned with the rainbow on the tray, Clo reached for a pink shot which tasted like overly sweet strawberries. Deciding not to say anything so her powers would return to their half-dormant state, she just reached for Alek’s hand and hoped to find comfort in his touch for the rest of this little meeting. Kat asked about Harley’s plans and honestly, a small part of Clo was hoping the blonde would say she was leaving the next day. Yeah, nah, she wouldn’t be that lucky. And then Alek mentioned the bonfire, causing Clo’s head jerk towards him and then at Harley. “Oh yeah. Sure, come with is. We’ll be thrilled to have you,” she offered a nice wide smile that was everything but genuine. The girl was having the hardest time to overcome that gnawing feeling of betrayal and she just needed time.

Bringing the shots to the table seemed like an amazing idea. Especially after it seemed that the demented shoes conversation was becoming an unpleasant subject and something which Harley and Clover were slowly getting into an argument for. Moreover, suddenly the door of the bar flew open, bringing a flood of orange and red leaves together with a rather strong wind. El’s eyes flicked to the side and he watched the door for a while before noticing Clover’s hands under the table. Yeah, it was the perfect time for shots and he went for it, returning with the tray in a short moment. This was something that was either going to calm everything down or send it to hell and raise mayhem among people. Well, Elliot never claimed he was the sharpest tool in the shed. And he wanted to do shots so this was an opportunity like no other anyway.

They all drank some but Monty just took a yellow one and examined it, asking about what was in it. “I told you not to ask, little dude, just drink it.” Elliot laughed, reaching for a straight black shot. “I guarantee that most of the time, you don’t even wanna know,” he laughed, kicking that black shot in, making a face over its strong herbal taste, whatever it was. Though it was Kat who reached over and took the shot from Monty, introducing limoncello to him before she downed it. The grimace on her face spoke louder than her words even before she said it was definitely not the alcohol she thought it was. “You guys seriously can’t do shots,” he laughed, mostly just teasing them, trying to lighten the whole situation up so nobody manifested their powers by accident because of stressful pent-up atmosphere in the booth.

MVP she was, Kat also moved the conversation to something else, that being Harley’s plans now that she was back home. Alek added his two cents when he mentioned the bonfire Ricky Carpenter was throwing and Elliot immediately got excited. “Oh yeah, that! It’s gonna be a real rave, you gotta come!” he breathed, finishing his beer to chase all those shots. “He does it every year and those partis became legendary. You guys remember last year when Jerry got so wasted that he went to get some and lost his clothes?” he grinned. “Like he was supposed to meet a girl in the woods or whatever and his drunk ass told him it was a good idea to come prepared so he undressed on his way but she never came and he couldn’t find his shit.” Elliot’s eyes turned to Harley. “Dude was running around the riverside buck naked and asking for the girl but no one knew who she was so we all just assumed he got high on something and hallucinated but the guy is now a meme, I swear,” Elliot laughed. “But yeah, there’s normal stuff happening two, you really should come.”

Harely had been a little nervous about coming back here, knowing that she might not be well received. Kat, Monty and Elliot all seemed happy to see her, but it was a completely different story with Alek and Clover. Who were apparently dating now, which had shocked the hell out of Harley. It wasn't just their reception to her returning that hurt, or their attitudes towards her in general, but seeing Clover all over Alek was stirring a jealousy within Harley that she didn't quite understand. She tried to tell herself it was just because she and Alek used to be so close, which would make sense, but something was telling her there was more to it. Trying to ignore those feelings for now, she threw back a purple shot, ignoring Clover's insult. “Nobody likes a sour bitch, sweetheart,” Indeed.

Kat asked what Harley's plans were a few shots later, and Harley opened her mouth to respond but to her surprise, Alek was quicker. Harley's eyes shot to him when he brought up the bonfire, to which Clover added that they'd be happy to have her. Elliot started in on a story about Jerry, a guy that Harley wasn't sure if she remembered or not. But the story itself was hilarious, and despite the tension Harley found herself laughing as she reached for another shot, this one clear. She downed it and gasped, waving her hand in front of her face. "Oh, that was not vodka. Tequila." She gasped out, laughing again as she set the empty shot glass back on the tray. The shots had all but disappeared by now, so Harley rested her arms on the table and looked around at everyone who seemed to be in varying states of intoxication.

"Alright, count me in for the bonfire. When is it? Tonight?" She asked, one of her hands finding her drink and bringing it closer. She sipped on it, killing most of it before her lips let go of the straw and she leaned back in her seat. "I don't have much of anything else going on, really. It's just me now so at some point I'll probably have to find a job." Even if it was temporary, she needed some sort of income. She hadn't fully decided what she was going to do yet, whether she was going to stay in Ashborough or move on. She had a house here, but was it a home? Only time would tell. She was glad to see her friends again, but a small part of her felt as though she didn't belong, and that made her sad. She'd craved a home ever since she was young, and moving around with her dad didn't give her much of that.

The tension at the table was only growing, and maybe him bringing up the shoes hadn't been such a great idea. All Monty wanted was to change the subject, to take the attention off of the tension, but somehow it just made things worse. Clover made her baby voice at Alek, asking him to buy her the 800 dollar shoes, and Monty could only watch as Alek agreed to do so. Blowing out a sharp breath of surprise, Monty just tucked his phone back into his pocket, nearly choking when Harley made her comment about Clover not being able to afford them on her own. It was no secret the girl could afford the Taj Mahal if she wanted. She was clearly the richest at the table, even flaunted that at times whether it was with her clothing, her accessories, or even her words. Sometimes she wasn't even nice about it.

Not that that stopped the way Monty felt about her. Monty, stop it, you idiot! He felt his face flush at the direction his thoughts had gone, and he immediately felt the same wave of guilt wash over him when he remembered she was dating Alek. Sinking down into his seat, he grabbed a yellow shot to distract himself. He wasn't going to drink it, he just wanted to inspect it, asking what kind of liquor was yellow like this. Kat laughed and asked him if he'd ever heard of something called limoncello-- which, the answer to that was a resounding no-- and then she took the shot from his hands. He watched her drink it and couldn't suppress a grin when her face contorted. "And that is why I don't drink." He told her, even though they all knew that wasn't the main reason. The main reason was to keep his own magic in check, and also because he just wasn't a drinker.

The conversation moved on to Ricky Carpenter's bonfire, and Monty looked around. Even though socializing wasn't really his thing, he had no doubt that Elliot was probably going to make him go. "I gotta go home, you know, got some work I've gotta get done." He muttered, hoping that Elliot wouldn't really hear him as he was focused on telling the story about Jerry that everyone around town knew. He sank down further into his seat, pursing his lips slightly as mostly everyone laughed at Elliot's story. But was it the story, or Elliot's amazing storytelling that had them going? Probably both. Monty drummed his fingers on the table, glancing over at Clover. He'd noticed when the door to the bar flew open and the wind picked up, but everyone had done a pretty good job of pretending it was totally normal. "You okay?" He asked the girl softly, looking down at her hands and then back up to her face.

For as long as Katarina could remember, she had an interest in the arts. Not just pencil and paper or paint on a canvas, but also photography, music, fashion, literature. As a child, her mother would encourage her to explore those passions. She would save up any extra tips she got from working doubles at the diner to buy secondhand art supplies, disposable cameras, and, one time for Christmas, an old guitar from a garage sale that the local music shop fixed up in trade for baked goods. Her grandmother taught her to sew, helping her make most of her own clothes out of thrifted items. Despite her small family and meager upbringing, Katarina had a happy childhood and was able to follow her interests, wherever they led her. When she was about nine or ten years old, she delved into reading about art and its history. She found solace in the works of Robert Frost and Edgar Allen Poe, pieces by Monet, Van Gogh, and Picasso. She learned about the creations of ancient Greeks, Romans, and Vikings. She spent hours at the library hidden behind stacks of books until the librarian had to tell her to leave so they could close up. It might seem a little lonely. But as an introvert, Katarina loved it.

Though her home was tastefully designed with art she had picked up over the years, it wasn't her only output of art appreciation. Tattoos were her way of displaying her art in a permanent, close-to-the-heart setting. She designed a couple of her tattoos, and the others were designed by Elliot. All but one were inked into her skin by her friend as well. Kat had never tried the gun herself, though she wouldn't mind learning. For now, though, it wasn't her medium. The few things she had chosen to ink into her skin were important to her in one way or another. The first was a lightning bolt with floral inlay on her upper arm, a representation of the strength and gentleness of her mother. A collection of artist tools on her forearm depicted her love for her craft. For her, the sun and moon phases on her sternum illustrated the passage of time and how to live in the present. And finally, the runes down her forearm, a basic set of the major things she might need on a day-to-day basis. Runes for healing, growth, protection, defense, even ruins for earth, fire, water, light, dark, and other elements of nature. She hadn't had a chance to use them in a while and had considered adding more. But that would have to wait until after this magic fiasco had cleared up.

With the shots gone, Katarina returned her attention to her Long Island Iced Tea, taking another pull from the glass. At the mention of Ricky Carpenter's bonfire, a smile curved her lips in excitement. "Yes! He had to catch a ride home in the back of Ryan Marco's pick-up. Apparently, he had to sneak up to his apartment to avoid any of his neighbors. I don't think I'll ever be able to get that image out of my head. That was such a night," she commented, shuddering as she let out a light laugh. As self-conscious as she regularly was, those parties had always been fun for her. It was a time that she could people-watch and not care what others thought of her. Because, at the end of the night, they probably wouldn't remember it anyway. And, on top of that, the alcohol that came with those parties did its part to lighten her inhibitions. Just as the shots and cocktails seemed to be doing then. "It is tonight! Maybe we should finish up here and head that way! It's getting dark, which means that it should be starting soon. What do you all say?" Katarina threw back the rest of her long island, downing about a quarter of the glass in one go. "Shall we take this party elsewhere?"

After his injury, the lack of proper healing, and the loss of his scholarships, Aleksander wasn't exactly mentally sound for a little bit. Because of that, he had sworn off magic. But he had also lost his way a bit. He took to partying quite a bit, losing days with alcohol though he kept the drugs and particularly more dangerous habits at arm's length. By day, he was the personal trainer who had to go to physical therapy to get his strength back. And by night, he was a figurehead of local dives and social gatherings. For a while, he didn't realize how toxic it was, nor that it wasn't the only toxic thing in his life. Though, he still didn't quite understand that latter. But when a blackout went awry, and there was a mishap with his transfiguration powers, Alek realized that he had to get his act together. That was one of the reasons the whole magic-on-the-fritz thing was truly getting to him. He was a perfectionist, didn't enjoy when things were out of his control or failures in general. And every time he couldn't keep his magic in check, it was another chink in his armor, another reason he wasn't good enough. Maybe that was one of the reasons he had latched onto Clover despite their rocky relationship. For the moments they were together, she was supportive and stable in the face of uncertainty.

Ricky Carpenter's bonfires were known for being rather wild, despite the normal nature of their small, sleepy town. He usually threw a big one once a year, right alongside the river. In the fall, the water was generally fairly cold. Nevertheless, many drunk attendees would find themselves jumping in with just their undergarments or even nothing at all on, opting to later warm themselves next to the raging flames of the bonfire. Aleksander would know, he had been one of those himself a couple of times over the years. While fire, water, and alcohol weren't necessarily a good match, there hadn't been any mishaps yet. Though, given the state of magic in town, that year might be different. Nevertheless, Alek was rather excited about the party. The second he had invited Harley, he realized what he had said and bit down on the inside of his cheek. Deep down, it felt like they could just fall back into where they left off all those years ago. But the redheaded athlete was rash and hotheaded, meaning he held onto grudges. This one had cut particularly deep, and he couldn't help but think he would probably be holding onto it for a while.

But, the words had already been said and, despite Clover's annoyed comment, the others were more than excited to explain. Glancing between Elliot and Kat as they spoke, Alek let out a low chuckle and nodded. "And that doesn't even include the other shenanigans that happened that night. Keg stand relays, idiots trying to jump over the bonfire, the rope swing. I wouldn't be surprised if Ricky tried to make it bigger and even more ridiculous than last year," he said with a smirk. Harley seemed delighted with the idea and agreed to go. Whether that was a good thing had yet to be explained, at least to him. Kat was quick to down the rest of her drink, and Alek followed suit, checking his watch. "Yeah, it should be starting soon. We can't miss the inaugural lighting of the bonfire, after all." Turning his attention to Monty, the athlete couldn't help but feel a bit bad for his shy friend. But that didn't mean he could get out of the party. "C'mon, Monty. You've got to check it out. You ditched us the last couple of years, and I will not stand for it. You're coming, even if El and I have to carry you ourselves," Alek teased, still grinning. Pulling out his phone, he clicked through it a bit. "I'll order us a ride, so hurry up and finish your drinks!"

Clover Lexington

Havin Harley back was something Clover was not expecting to happen. At least not today. It was the spooky time, they were supposed to have fun, go to the bonfire and have drinks and anything people their age usually did. The day, or rather last few weeks if not months, were marked by the unnatural shift in magic and Clover was already having a lot of trouble keeping everything under the lid. Controlling elements was less than simple under normal circumstances. They were all around. Fire, water, air, earth. She could never not be around them. But now when everything was tearing off the chain and getting out of control even more, the last thing Clover need was a trigger for her emotions. Maybe Harley was not here to rile her up. Well, Harley definitely wasn’t here to do so and somewhere deep inside there was a tiny part of Clover which knew that. But her overall nature and mouth running faster than her brain sometimes, there were already things which could not be unsaid and thoughts which were eating at the brunette, poking her in all the wrong ways.

Clover’s head jerked back up when a soft tone of male voice reached her ears and she looked at Monty and a hint of concern in his eyes. For the briefest of moments, her own face softened, something that happened only very rarely. Out of all people, it was Monty who noticed? But the second Clo realized she was offering a slight peak on her weakness, she collected herself and put on her bulletproof smile. “Yes. Of course, I’am.” she answered and reached for one more shot, pouring it down her throat without even looking at what she was consuming. She was the queen, wasn’t she? No one was allowed to see her in less than her perfect shape. Clover would never allow it.

The bonfire was their next destination and only Monty seemed hesitant to go. Alek and Eliot both told him he had to go, tried to convince him and Clover smiled at him as well, placing a hand softly on his forearm. “Come on, Montgomery. Just have fun for one night. It won’t kill you, I promise.” she chimed, her accent protruding slightly more as she turned her voice into sweet mode. Alek was already taking care of their ride and so Clover reached for her drink, finishing it within seconds. She then stood up and fixed her hair, adding a little bit of fluff and air in the strands. “Shall we? We all could use a little party, or so it feels.” she added, stealing one more look at Harley. Why was she back? And why now?

Elliot was glad that the debate at the table was moved away from a very possible catfight. Not that he would not like to watch one, quite the contrary. But preferably with different fighters. Clover was a bitch and that was a straight face, she was a daughter of sneaky cunning cold businessman and only god knew what kind of lessons the old Lexington bestowed upon his only princess. Not that he did not believe Harley could defend herself. The girls used to be friends after all, shit didn’t need to get uglier than it already was. Back at the group home, Elliot saw enough fights and most of the time, he was the one on the ground, kicked and hit by the other kids. His arms got bigger and more muscular now and he packed a punch in him but before, he was this small scrawny kid and there was no chance for him to fight away several kids who were twice his size each.

The story of drunken Jerry seemed to bring a good deal of laughter around the table and even Harley laughed though Elliot was not sure if she knew the guy. But it did bring the good mood back so what did it matter anyway? Kat and Alek added their two cents to the story and for a moment, it felt like those good old times when they were kids, sitting at one table, laughing and slurping their beverages. Although back then, they babysat all kinds of milkshakes instead of alcohol. Elliot could still remember the smooth silky taste of his favorite blueberry milkshake topped with loads of shipped cream and three large balls of berries. As if it was yesterday.

The talk of bonfire was getting deeper and deeper and it was already clear they all were going. Well, all but one. Elliot looked at his nerdy friend and was about to protest when Alek beat him to it. And so the tattooed boy only clicked his tongue and pointed at Alek with his two-finger gun. “What he said, dude.” he confirmed and Clover pleaded as well. “Come on, let’s party for real this time!” he hollered and downed his beer and the remaining shot, jumping up almost immediately after. His hand found Kat’s and he tugged on her gently but enough to pull her up to her feet. Reaching for the blonde prodigal daughter of Ashborough, he did the same and softly nudged both girls towards the door, draping his arms around their shoulders. “Just stay by my side, ed, ladies? Best fun guaranteed.”

Getting invited to a bonfire hadn't been on Harley's to-do list, but it actually sounded like a pretty sweet deal. The night had approached quickly, and for a few moments at the table things had felt like normal. But there were little things here and there that were off, things that didn't feel like the old times. For example, Alek's snark towards her. Harley had come to expect snark from Clover, as she'd experienced it a few times back in the day. But Alek had never acted that way towards her, and experiencing it now hurt. Another example was the entwined hands of Alek and Clover. At least Kat, Monty and Elliot seemed happy to see her and were trying to make things as normal as possible, even if normal was the furthest thing from what was happening. Harley ached for those times back, but she knew they were gone. For good? Only time would tell.

Monty tried to weasel his way out of going to the bonfire, and Alek was quick to ensure that didn't happen. Clover and Elliot added their two cents while Alek ordered them a ride, and then everyone was finishing their drinks. Harley had nearly finished hers already, so she just lifted the glass to her lips to finish the rest, even bringing an ice cube into her mouth to munch on. "Come on. I'm so ready." She spoke through the chunks of ice as she slid out of the booth, Elliot draping an arm around her and Kat as he steered them towards the door. Leaning her head on his shoulder, she swallowed the rest of the ice that had melted to water, turning her head to look at him. "Thanks for the warm welcome home, guys." She told them, her voice soft as she lifted her head, leaning it forward some to make sure Kat knew she was talking to her, too.

It didn't take long for the ride to get there, and they all piled into the back, still riding the mostly good mood from the bar. They'd definitely upgraded from the milkshakes and sodas from back in the day, but the alcohol had definitely helped ease the tension some. Key word: some. The ride still held a touch of awkwardness throughout it, but Harley did her best not to focus on the happy (?) couple near her. Ricky Carpenter lived out on the edge of town on a pretty big plot of land, which definitely helped with his bonfires and regular parties. The car dropped them off and they all climbed out, Harley looking at the unfamiliar house before her. She hated that she'd basically missed growing up with her friends, because now she felt like a stranger as they headed to the woods where Ricky was standing on top of a large rock, announcing the lighting of the fire.

People started moving closer, watching in awe as he hit a long match and dropped it into the burn barrel. Harley had gotten moved closer to the burn barrel in the jostling of the crowd, and without warning, someone bumped into her and sent her flying towards the burn barrel just as the flames started to rise. A startled shriek left her lips and as though the fire reacted to her it suddenly stretched to the skies and tumbled over the sides of the barrel, licking the ground in a direct path to her. Harley could only watch with a horrified look in her eyes as the fire ate everything in its path. She braced herself as best she could for the fire to engulf her, snapping out of her trance enough to bury her face in her arms in the dirt. But to her surprise, the heat never came. Instead, she felt someone grabbing her arm, trying to help her off the ground.

Monty had always been a perceptive little shit, or at least, he'd been called that on more than one occasion. So he'd definitely noticed that Clover was feeling a little uncomfortable, and he saw the vulnerability in her eyes when she turned them onto him. Her expression softened, but only for a moment before she collected herself and her walls were back up. Letting out a soft sigh, the nerd nodded and glanced back at the rest of the table. He very much wished that Clover could be herself around him, and not the version of herself that she put up for others to see. But he knew that was just wishful thinking, that he was lucky he even got the fake version of her. Resisting the urge to sigh again, he tried to get out of going to the bonfire, knowing it was just going to be a bunch of drunken idiots trying to jump into the fire again.

Okay, over the fire, but still. It wasn't Monty's idea of a good time, never had been, which is why he'd managed to sneak out of the others the last few years. But apparently, this year he wasn't going to be as lucky. Alek spoke up first, then Elliot and even Clover. "Fiiiine." Monty muttered, glancing at Alek as he started to order them a ride. Monty debated on going to hide in the bathroom, but he knew one of the guys-- if not one of the girls-- would just come in and find him. So he headed outside with the others, making sure to clean up the table nicely before he left it, leaving a nice tip as well. The ride came pretty quickly and they piled in, and before long, they'd reached Ricky's property and were climbing right back out. Monty could already hear the shouts and howls coming from the trees, and he winced slightly as they got closer.

But if he thought that was going to be the worst of it, he was wrong. They'd arrived just in time for Ricky to hoist himself up onto his "king rock" as he called it, strike the long match and drop it into the burn barrel. People cheered as the flames shot up, licking the dried wood inside the barrel. The people in the crowd started moving around and suddenly he heard a shriek, one that sounded pretty familiar. His head whipped to the side, just in time to see Harley fall to the ground near the barrel. The flames responded to the magic within her, which Monty only knew because he held the same magic. He knew he wouldn't be the only one who noticed, either. It was hard not to notice the flames suddenly jump that much higher, and then start heaading directly for Harley as she lay there on the ground.

But just as she buried her head in the dirt, the illusion faded and the fire was back to normal. People stared in stunned silence before someone shouted something obscene to be funny, and people started laughing again. Ricky commented on the illusion as well, making some sort of dumb joke out of it, but Monty didn't hear his words as he practically dove to the ground next to Harley. Wrapping his fingers around her arm, he started to tug on her, trying to get her to stand. He sent a panicked look to his friends before looking back at the blonde, finally managing to get her off the ground and out of the dirt. People had already forgotten about what happened, and drinks were being passed around, and Monty actually considered taking one. For only a second, then the want passed. "Come on." He mumbled, pulling her away from the fire and towards the edge of the crowd. "You okay?"

In high school, Katarina was the type of person that made friends fairly easily. She was, and still is, bright and fun and an overall sweetheart. She didn't necessarily fit in one group or clique, finding she shared interests with many. From the art kids to the band geeks, the stoners and hipsters, to even the popular kids and jocks. She was the type of person that others were just sort of drawn to. Despite whatever she might be going through, Kat was always there to brighten the days of others and help them with whatever they might need. She kept her own issues fairly hidden behind a carefully crafted facade of happiness and cute disorganization. After all, who wants to hear about her issues when they were having some of their own? For these reasons, she was often invited to all the parties and get-togethers that her friends threw. Part of the time, she was the person to keep an eye on the others at parties, to make sure they didn't get into too much trouble. And other times, she was the life of the party.

With their alcoholic beverages pretty much finished off, the bill was paid and they were ready to go. Kat felt a hand slip into hers and looked over. Her eyes followed the tattooed skin and leather sleeve up to Elliot's face, finding excitement in his eyes. She grinned in response, letting him pull her to her feet from their usual booth. A warm, unknown feeling filled her heart for a moment. But it quickly disappeared as soon as he reached for Harley as well. Whatever that feeling was, the brunette decided to ignore it. She rolled her eyes playfully at Elliot's comment, leaning into his side ever so slightly. "You have to remember it for it to be the best fun, El. So no blackouts this time," she responded, reaching over to poke him on the cheek. Her eyes found Harley's, and Katarina offered her a softer, more sincere smile. "Of course, Harley. We're happy you're back."

The rune-maker was only slightly uncomfortable cramming into the back of a rideshare car. But, thankfully, the ride was short and they were quickly unloading from the car onto the chilled land that Ricky Carpenter called home. Katarina moved up the hill towards the fire pit area with ease, briefly stopping to smile and greet those that she knew either from around town or high school. At some point, a red plastic cup was slipping into her hand filled with some sort of cocktail. Sipping it, she found it tasted mostly likely tequila. Not her favorite, but it would do. When they finally reached the burn site, they found Ricky standing atop a rock, ready to drop the lit match into the barrel below. The flames almost immediately seemed to lick over the sides of the barrel and directly towards Harley, who had somehow tumbled towards the ground. Katarina felt her heart begin to race and immediately reached to activate one of the runes tattooed into her skin. But before she could, the fire disappeared and it was as if it never happened.

Katarina couldn't quite explain what she had seen. It was as if the fire had begun to act on its own. Clover was the expert in elemental magic. But she couldn't believe her friend would do something like that, even despite her qualms with Harley. Then again, magic had been running amok in town lately, and it was getting increasingly hard to control their powers, let alone the natural magic that ran through the Earth. Kat found Monty's panicked gaze in their direction, and she quickly found herself slipping through the crowd to find her friends. "Harley, are you alright?" the brunette questioned, turquoise blue eyes glancing over her friend as she searched for any sign of injury. Her free hand hovered over the runic symbols down her forearm. They glowed slightly golden in response to the beginnings of a magic request. To the untrained eye, it would just look like the reflection of firelight. Strangely enough, there were no injuries. It was almost as if that fire hadn't actually happened at all. Kat turned her attention to Monty, a questioning look in her eyes. What was going on?
